Readers’ Rock List: Hidden Tracks

6/23/08, 3:00 pm EST

Last week, inspired by Coldplay’s Viva La Vida and its unlisted songs, we asked our readers for their favorite hidden tracks. Thanks to a printing mishap on the original pressings of London Calling, the Clash’s “Train in Vain (Stand by Me)” was voted Number One, slightly edging Beck’s “Diamond Bollocks” off Mutations:

1. The Clash – “Train in Vain (Stand by Me)” on London Calling
2. Beck – “Diamond Bollocks” on Mutations
3. Alanis Morissette – “Your House” on Jagged Little Pill
4. Nine Inch Nails – “Physical”/”Suck” on Broken
5. The Beatles – “Her Majesty” on Abbey Road
6. Nirvana – “Sappy” on No Alternative Compilation
7. Tool – “The Gaping Lotus Experience on Opiate
8. Stone Temple Pilots – “My Second Album” on Purple
9. Green Day – “All By Myself” on Dookie
10. Coldplay – “To Kingdom Come” on X&Y

“Endless, Nameless” - available on select copies of Nirvana’s Nevermind.

What about This Time Imperfect by AFI? That has to be my favorite hidded track ever.

And it’s new, but “C#nts are Still Running the World” from Jarvis Cocker’s new album ‘Jarvis’ was so good it was a single in England. The half hour pause before it starts after ‘Jarvis’’s last track is annoying on an iPod, though.

I was gonna say Erotrash Girl as well, also I Ride My Bike - the other hidden track on Kerosene Hat.

Terry’s Song on Springsteen’s Magic may be the best of the entire disc (and not listed on the cover)

Eurotrash Girl by Cracker has been overlooked…a gross oversight!

This probably doesn’t count, but my favorite one of these was October on the first U2 Greatest Hits album. There is a long break between the fadeout of All I Want is You and it scared the shit out of me the first time I heard it.

Yeah, pretty sure Her Majesty is not a hidden track.

2 of those songs are not hidden at all. Kingdom Come and Her Majesty are clearly labeled on the track list. Good choice on Sappy.
