News Ticker: Amy Winehouse, George Carlin and MTV Video Music Awards

6/23/08, 9:45 am EST

  • Amy Winehouse has been diagnosed with emphysema, the singer’s father confirms. Doctors have warned Winehouse that if she continues to smoke drugs, she’d not only lose her voice, but “it will kill her,” as only 70 percent of her lung capacity remains.

  • Comedian George Carlin died of heart failure yesterday in Los Angeles. He was 71. Over the course of his career, Carlin released 23 comedy albums, appeared on 14 HBO specials and won four Grammys for Best Spoken Word Comedy Album.
  • After a decade of bouncing around between New York, Miami and Las Vegas, the MTV Video Music Awards are returning to Los Angeles. This year’s award show will air September 7th from the Paramount Pictures lot in Hollywood. The host, artist appearances and nominees are expected to be announced soon.

Amy did it to herself. No sympathy.

I am about over the assholes who say all the vicious things about Amy Winehouse=
She is an
EXTREMELY TALENTED singer/songwriter and performer. I am also a singer/songwriter uitarist and performer. so i fo now what i m talking about= Back in Black is a masterpiece…
like many other great artsts of all genres.. she has a substance problem/issues she is trying to deal with.

the person who said if she was your sister or friend.. you`d feel different=was right.. drug addicition and its consequences are so tragic.. and unfortunately.. no one expects themselves to get hooked any time on anything..but it happens..drugs/booze/cigfrrett es/food/ work/exercize.. you name it all can be addictive but we dont sem to have the vitriol for anyone else quite like Amy now do we?

and yes in the old days I liked George Carlin. but he suffered from a heart issue years ago .. probably due to being a cocaine abuser.. if he had been around during the crack era.. he would have been doing that.I m sorry he has passed.. but i wont see him made into a int eiter.. his atheism.. always a personal choice = crossed over into vicious attacks on peoiple.. his comedy went from fresh , funny entertaining ,and very very clever=to mean spirited and judgemental it was difficult to watch that happen when i enjopyed him for so many years i hope he has a found ameasure of peace.. because in his last years .. he came across to me like a very angry man. may he rest in peace.

Well it’s nice to hear from perfect people like yourselves that have never had a rough time if it.
Amy

So much anger.

Hey Pete - 1935 called. It wants its film noir wannabe misogynist C-movie gangster dialogue back.

(Broad? Really?)

Pete | 6/23/2008, 5:45 pm EST

Sorry to say it, but to Hell with Amy Winehouse. This broad is an idiot. Crack? Really? Crack. Any time I see the crackheads on my block, they get no sympathy. Her dad is an asshole too.

Why? | 6/23/2008, 4:52 pm EST

Why does Amy Winehouse have any fans??

Yoki | 6/23/2008, 4:46 pm EST

Winehouse is such a talent, it’s sad to say it but it feels like we’re just counting down to her death at this point. At least Carlin was able to rise above his similar problems, but unfortunately I don’t think anyone is holding out that much hope for Amy.

The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I’m just not close enough to get the job done.

“George Carlin”

Reefer Dude | 6/23/2008, 4:27 pm EST

Jeez, Amy, c’mon. What’s up with the crack? Everybody knows that weed is the drug of choice. Schmoke schmoke schmoke da weed!

shaka zulu | 6/23/2008, 4:13 pm EST

Those who diss amy and say such cruel things have never listened to back to black. i would think that people on this site wouldn’t be so judgmental — especially about drugs. why all the hate?

Mike Vasquez | 6/23/2008, 2:41 pm EST

I agree, George Carlin was not only a comic mindfreak, but has way more talent and value than mainstream crackhouse. The only way I put this on the cover is if Amy uses this news as an example to change her life. George has all made us look at life different and most of all laugh about it. Amy is the poor example about mainstream sell outs and how they get caught up in the drug life. Plus its nice to see how MTV puts people like her on centerstage

Winehouse is a crackhead. Sucks to be her.

Moonie | 6/23/2008, 2:11 pm EST

It’s sad when a waste like Amy Winehouse gets top bill over a true comedy genius like George Carlin! Your magazine is worthless..

Nelson | 6/23/2008, 1:45 pm EST

Hah-ha, Amy Winehouse smokes crack and has emphysema.

stupid jake burns | 6/23/2008, 1:30 pm EST

Chemical dependancy is no laughing matter, If this were your child, mother, sister, or a dear loved one, I bet your stupid comment would change.

Jake Burns | 6/23/2008, 12:54 pm EST

Amy did this to herself. No sympathy.

Santa | 6/23/2008, 12:13 pm EST

RIP Amy Winehouse. She had such a promising career. She will be missed.

JD | 6/23/2008, 10:36 am EST

They’d better put George Carlin on the next cover.

Jughead | 6/23/2008, 10:21 am EST

May funny man George Carlin rest in peace. He smacked political correctness in the face, tackling the hypocrisy of the right and people of power. And being an admitted atheist, he taught us all how ludicrous it is to worship “the invisible man of the sky,” in a very funny, hilarious skit. In this day and age we need more comedians like George Carlin.
