Weekend Rock List: Hidden Tracks

6/20/08, 2:15 pm EST

As Coldplay fans may have noticed, the band’s new Viva La Vida contains not one, but two unlisted tracks. To pay homage to the secret song, a victim of the MP3 era, this week’s Rock List is dedicated to hidden tracks. Whether they’re left off the track list, tucked away on an album’s pregap or buffered by 10 minutes of silence after the last song, let us know your favorites and on Monday we’ll reveal the Readers’ List. Here’s our picks:

• Nirvana – “Endless, Nameless” on Nevermind
• Dr. Dre – “Bitches Ain’t Shit” on The Chronic
• Bruce Springsteen – “Terry’s Song” on Magic
• Blur – “Me, White Noise” on Think Tank
• Coldplay – “To Kingdom Come” on X&Y

A few more staff faves from the Nineties — a decade that was all about the hidden track — are after the jump.

• Pearl Jam - “Master Slave” on Ten
• Cracker - “Eurotrash Girl” on Kerosene Hat
• Dave Matthews Band - “#34″ on Under the Table and Dreaming
• Alanis Morissette - “Your House” on Jagged Little Pill
• Green Day - “All By Myself” on Dookie

Yeah, Endless Nameless was only available on the first issue of Nevermind. I think on the newer releases it’s back on there.

I’d like to mention the hidden track on Tool’s Undertow. That totally caught me off guard when crickets starting chirping loudly. I didn’t know where it was coming from.

K.A.G.e | 6/23/2008, 2:45 pm EST

I don’t know the names but the two tracks at the end of Damien Rice’s “O” and the fake hidden track at the end of “9″

Coldplay Tracks | 6/23/2008, 2:36 pm EST

The tracks arent really all that hidden if you go to wikipedia it says that they are the ones after yes and i think 42, its not like the traditional hidden tracks at end of album after minutes of silence

Hidden Coldplay tracks? | 6/23/2008, 12:07 pm EST

There are two hidden tracks on the new Coldplay album? The copy I bought doesn’t have any hidden tracks? Is it not on all copies? Do you have to buy it at a certain retailer?

pvd5019 | 6/23/2008, 10:07 am EST

Is this Nirvana song only on older pressed cd’s? Because I got my copy probably 6 or 7 years ago and I couldn’t think of the hidden track on it. I just put it on and something in the way closes the cd for me.

Endless, Nameless, for sure

Dave | 6/22/2008, 1:14 pm EST

John Hiatt’s “Mile High” from Walk On is one of his best songs ever. That’s says alot from this master songwriter.

Counting Crows “Chelsea” is a nice change with piano & sax off their live 1st live CD disc 1

…but “Train In Vain” is my #1

Chris | 6/22/2008, 12:00 pm EST

“To Kingdom Come” off of Coldplay’s X&Y. My favourite Coldplay song ever.

Scott (MetalMartyr.com) | 6/22/2008, 8:29 am EST

There is Danzig’s Mother ‘93 recored on track 93 on Thrall Demonsweat Live. After the last track you have to go through until you hit track 93 to hear the version of Mother re-recorded in 1993 from Danzig 1. They also did something similar on Danzig 4

manny | 6/21/2008, 9:58 pm EST

how about pearl jam’s secret songs, the weird type-writer in binaural, and the excellent gypsy-like instrumental in yield? (my favorite)

Devinoch | 6/21/2008, 9:29 pm EST

The X-Files: Songs in the Key of X — it’s pre-gap, so it’s track 0 (i.e. go to track one and time-scroll back like 15 minutes) and there’s two there. The Dirty Three’s version of the X-Files theme is, hands down, the best version of that music ever.

jmbo jones | 6/21/2008, 7:30 pm EST

there is also the hidden track at the start of unkle’s psyence fiction album that is like a history of music, all the great songs mixed together. good listen.

boi | 6/21/2008, 6:42 pm EST

BECK-DIAMOND BOLLOCKS

big jumpsuit | 6/21/2008, 6:40 pm EST

I agree with other people here. BECK’S “DIAMOND BOLLOCKS” is one of the best hidden tracks ever, and unlike nothing he’s ever recorded. Pure wickedness made sound.

Mike | 6/21/2008, 4:37 pm EST

“Pay the Man” from The Offspring’s Americana is a nice hidden track. It has that swirling Mid-Eastern rhythm that the band has unfortunately kept out of their last two albums - new release included.

poughkeepsiejohn | 6/21/2008, 4:11 pm EST

I’m a big fan of The Byrds and their CD re-issues have some surprising hidden tracks. The most surprising is from their 1967 album, “The Notorious Byrd Brothers”. It’s not that great a record. But at the end of the LP, there is almost ten minutes of dialogue between Roger McGuinn and the rest of the band, mostly drummer Mike Clarke. The heated banter shows just how bad things were in the band; shortly after the album came out, Clarke left and so did David Crosby. It’s one of those “fly on the wall” moments that you hear about but you never thought you’d hear for yourself.

Melomania | 6/21/2008, 3:53 pm EST

Tom in Vegas- All the original recordings of “Abbey Road” did not have “Her Majesty” on the track list. It was accidentally left on the master tapes, and was added to the the list later. So it was definitely hidden at the beginning…the Beatles didn’t even know it was there!

joep | 6/21/2008, 3:28 pm EST

what about “the second album” on the end of Stone Temple Pilot’s purple?

softie hotpants | 6/21/2008, 2:24 pm EST

i think the first hidden track ever is possibly the sgt. pepper’s inner groove! i’m buying myself a beer for that one!

ben | 6/21/2008, 2:15 pm EST

campaign button by fionn regan

Ryan Wunn | 6/21/2008, 1:51 pm EST

My Chemical Romance has a hidden track at the end of THE BLACK PARADE that’s pretty good.

Timmer | 6/21/2008, 12:55 pm EST

Soul Asylum’s “Fearless Leader” off of The Silver Lining. Who can not love a song that starts “Jesus was a hippy.”

RTickle | 6/21/2008, 11:05 am EST

Unholy Smoke | 6/21/2008, 9:09 am EST

Songs For The Deaf also has a pre-track 1 nugget, called The Real Song For The Deaf. Hidden tracks at the start and the end - pure genius.

Same thing on A Place In The Sun byt Lit, they have a little instrumental jam if you rewind from the start.

hotslutoftheday | 6/21/2008, 4:23 am EST

Ok Who Here remembers the “NO ALTERNATIVE’ compilation that came out way back in 93 to raise funds for Aids organizations all over North America?? Well there’s a Hidden track on is called “Verse Chorus Verse” by NIRVANA- its my All time FAV hidden track!!!

Three Flights Down by Yellowcard off “Lights And Sounds”

S-P | 6/21/2008, 3:12 am EST

There’s a hidden track on “Opiate,” Tool’s first disc….I don’t know what it’s called (I’m sure someone will help me out), but it’s god damn hilarious. Maynard sings about taking different drugs and freaking out (pretending he’s a fire engine and pissing everywhere, making love to a pillow, and so on) and the chorus just has him yelling “Satan” over and over…..anyone know the title?

Tom in Vegas | 6/21/2008, 12:55 am EST

The Clash - Train In Vain, the story goes that the song was supposed to be a free flexi disc in New Musical Express magazine, then when the record company heard it, said it was too good to be a giveaway, so they stuck it at the end of London Calling, but the labels and covers had been printed already. A lot of copies had a sticker put on especially after the song charted.
Oh and people, Her Majesty by thr Beatles IS on the cover, do you know what hidden track means?????

JoJo | 6/21/2008, 12:22 am EST

The pre-gap track by the Czars on “Ugly people vs.”!!!

Anonymous | 6/21/2008, 12:18 am EST

my favorite is the hidden track on pearl jam’s Yield. very satisfying

I don’t think Her Majesty is technically a hidden track since it is listed on Abbey Road’s tracklisting. But it is still great, nonetheless.

How about Blue Flashing Light from Travis - The Man Who? Great track. Or even better, Sailing Away from their latest album The Boy With No Name. Awesome song!

Mike | 6/20/2008, 11:43 pm EST

Atmosphere - “Say Shhh” gets my vote for best of all time!

Also:

Her Majesty’s a pretty nice girl
But she doesn’t have a lot to say
Her Majesty’s a pretty nice girl
But she changes from day to day
I wanna tell her that I love her
But I gotta have a belly full of wine
Her Majesty’s a pretty nice girl
Someday I’m gonna make her mine
Oh yeah
Someday I’m gonna maker her mine

Kenneth | 6/20/2008, 7:43 pm EST

RTickle - There were TWO X-Files Cds issued simultaneously. Which Cd are you referring to that has that track? Please Specify. Thanks!

Anonymous | 6/20/2008, 4:35 pm EST

let me remind you all that Disgustipated IS on the Undertow tracklist, and therefor, NOT a hidden track.

NIN’s version of Suck gets my vote, and let me say that it is a shame that Endless Nameless has been left off of current pressings of Nevermind.

thiago | 6/20/2008, 4:26 pm EST

your house, alanis morissette (jagged little pill)

Jim | 6/20/2008, 4:14 pm EST

I would agree with the hidden track on Beck’s Mutations. Probably my favorite beck song actually

dan | 6/20/2008, 3:49 pm EST

Oddjob | 6/20/2008, 3:48 pm EST

They Might Be Giants- Token Back to Brooklyn on Factory Showroom (BEFORE track 1- you had to rewind to hear it!!!)

chris | 6/20/2008, 3:33 pm EST

“Diamond Bullocks” off of Mutations by Beck. May just be my favorite Beck song and sounds NOTHING like anything on that album or any other Beck record.

colplay - “life is for living”

Chuck Smith | 6/20/2008, 2:55 pm EST

Coheed and Cambria’s “2113″ from IKSSE3 really foreshadows the band’s full deluge into prog on Good Apollo. Great hidden track.

U2’s “Best of 1980-1990″ segues from “All I want is You” (listed)into “October” (unlisted)

One of my favorite Christmas songs was a hidden track on Everclear’s “So Much for the Afterglow” — Hating you For Christmas.

jp | 6/20/2008, 2:41 pm EST

Beck - hidden track on Mutations

Paul McCartney - hidden track on Chaos and Creation in the Backyard

RTickle | 6/20/2008, 2:36 pm EST

I remember the X-Files CD had a track that was BEFORE the cd started…I think the liner notes said something like “Nick Cave would like to remind you that ‘0′ is also a number”..
I recall it didn’t work on all the CD players. Ya had to let the CD read “track 1″ and then hit the back button.
Remember also a few double-grooved records that would play one of 2 intro-tracks depending on where exactly one put the needle down.
And of course the British pressings of Sgt. Pepper had nonsense in the run-off groove and if you had a non-automatic turntable it would spin on and on until you laughed yer ass off.

Mysterious Mose | 6/20/2008, 2:25 pm EST

The hidden track on Stone Temple Pilots’ Purple is fantastically great.

“This song sounds a lot like Johnny Mathis — for Mathis lovers!”
