Oscars Change “Original Song” Rules

6/20/08, 9:04 am EST

In an effort to prevent a single musical from monopolizing the Original Song field at the Oscars, the Academy has changed the rules of the category. While movies can submit any number of songs they want, starting with the 2009 Oscars, only two songs can be nominated per film. The move comes after two consecutive years in which a musical received nods for three songs in the category, Enchanted in 2008 and Dreamgirls in 2007. In both cases, however, dominating with three nominated songs ultimately proved to a curse, as Once’s “Falling Slowly” won this year’s Oscar and Melissa Etheridge took the prize in 2007 for An Inconvenient Truth’s “I Need To Wake Up.” In addition, the Academy will allow DVDs of musical numbers to be sent to members of the voting committee who are unable to attend screenings. Had this new rule gone into effect last year, it’s possible Eddie Vedder would have received a nomination for his Golden Globe-winning work on Into the Wild’s soundtrack.

I forgot, the oscars are a creation of the devil, he really sucks, kind of a Motley Crue or any Glam kind of sucking. Sorry for disappearing during the 80’s, I was partying with Hendrix and the rookie Lennon.

God | 6/23/2008, 12:23 pm EST

Sorry, but Eddie isn’t god, cos I am God. He’s a semigod, just like his brothers Neil Young, and Chris Cornell, and of course Gossard, Ament, Mcready and Cameron.
The ones who said that PJ sucks are going straight to hell, no a chance for them here above.

Hey Craigster! We’re talking Oscars here, not Grammys!

bob | 6/22/2008, 4:53 pm EST

Eddie Vedder has got to be one of the pompus, stuck up asses ever. Furthermore pearl jam sucks.

Eddie Vedder sucks

Does an academy award make any Into the Wild soundtrack song sound better? For those who love these songs, let’s keep it to ourselves. Pearl Jam and Ed Vedder will always keep us assured of what’s next.

Craig | 6/21/2008, 12:03 am EST

Shows how irrelevant the Grammy’s have become when it comes to judging music. Leaving Eddie Vedder out was just about as bad as Mick Jagger and Dave Stewart being left out a few years back for Old Habits Die Hard. Year after year it seems the Golden Globes gets it right and the Grammy’s don’t.

Tricky Dick:

Read the book, listen to the lyrics of the soundtrack, and educate yourself. Each song was in perfect accompaniment with each scene. The symbiosis of music and film is far beyond your comprehension.

Rise was the best song on ITW, it should’ve taken the oscar. but luckily ed and pearl jam are above such foolish and unimportant awards

__________

I agree completely. “Rise” was unbelievably great, and anyone who causes me to believe that a ukulele song is great IS a musical genius.

Gabi Hoopasteak | 6/20/2008, 3:59 pm EST

Tricky Dick is a dick.

Eddie Vedder wasn’t robbed — his songs were like sleeping pills in that movie.

Jonny Greenwood wasn’t robbed — he simply stole from Bartok and Penderecki, who are REAL COMPOSERS.

Jenner | 6/20/2008, 2:05 pm EST

I’m sure Eddie lost about a minute of sleep over this. He’s aware of what matters… and silly statue doesn’t.

PEARL JAM!!!!!!!! :)

Eric Con Queso | 6/20/2008, 1:22 pm EST

Don’t worry fellas, Eddie Vedder will be ok without his Oscar. I’m sure he could care less and hasn’t thought about it in months.

Jules | 6/20/2008, 12:58 pm EST

Vedder is the best!!!!
I love the soundtrak of “Into the wild” and all the Pearl Jam’s songs

Joker77 | 6/20/2008, 12:48 pm EST

Vedder’s album was the best put out all year. Regardless of how many songs from a musical can be nominated, good taste should prevail. As usual with the oscars it didn’t. The rule won’t change anything.

bowieno | 6/20/2008, 12:46 pm EST

The Oscer’s is the worse masturbation ceremony ever. How can be ever to be a progressive nation with thess beat off contests? Sick! be careful of who you cantonize and worshipping mortals who make more money you ever will. Advertise Advertise!

Jungleland | 6/20/2008, 12:37 pm EST

Didn’t know Jonny Greenwood did the There Will Be Blood score. I just saw the movie last night and thought the music was fantastic

David | 6/20/2008, 11:09 am EST

Maybe now the Academy will wise up and also change the rules regarding the Best Original Score category. Jonny Greenwood was robbed last year when his score for “There Will be Blood” was disqualified due to his use of pre-existing music in the movie. This was despite the fact that nearly the entire score, and expecially the particularly gripping parts of the score, were of his own composition! It’s a pretty stupid rule. As if you can’t take pre-existing music and do something new with it!

Eddie Vedder is god, and he doesn’t need an award to prove to the world what a genius he is!

grace6697 | 6/20/2008, 10:42 am EST

ed vedder was robbed.
