Comment of the Week

6/20/08, 4:55 pm EST

Nothing got your keyboards buzzing like Kanye West’s controversial 4:30 a.m. Bonnaroo set this week. Here are the three best reader commentaries:

“Hendrix played at 6 a.m. at Woodstock. Since when did all you rockers have a bedtime? Staying up all night to watch the seminal rap artist of the age play a sunrise set is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I’m sure some lame hippies were selling uppers. Learn how to live. Barcelona’s Sonar Fest — the world’s premier avant music fest — doesn’t even get going until 3am!” — Ray LeMoine

“What’s the worst thing about this whole issue? Many of us missed amazing shows because we believed that Kanye was going to do something we had never seen before. Hello, the Flaming Lips last year at Bonnaroo had a glowing SPACESHIP, and the lasers and lights were out of this world. Kanye’s show was just okay. Considering that most people took the candy about an hour before he was SET to come on, most of the people there were coming DOWN by the time he was coming ON… and since it was suppossed to be ‘GLOW IN THE DARK’… it was RUINED by the fact that the SUN came up after what, his fourth song? Really? Bonnaroo? It’s becoming to mainstream and commercial, and all about money… Expect them to either crumble next year or go back to their roots. Either way, unless the lineup is amazing, I won’t be paying for a ticket.” — Luxxe

“So, Phil Lesh, who is 68 and prostate cancer and hepatitis C survivor had to cut the setbreak out of his show and play three hours straight for this? And he got up the next day and played a ninety minute acoustic set? They should rename Kanye’s ’space opera’ Blows In the Dark…” — IV

Ray LeMoine clearly wasn’t one of the people who had to sit and wait in the cold several hours for Kayne to come out.

Boo frickity who! You didn’t have to, you wanted to. Plus, its been record high temperatures on the west coast all f*cking week, so I would KILL to freeze in the cold AND get to see Kanye again.

Everybody needs to stop complaining…worse things have happened to their lives.

This person Luxxe must not have gone to the same festival as me. Kanye’s show was incredibly entertaining. I was slightly disappointed by the length and the fact that I missed other amazing music (ike a surprise late-night Galactic set with Chalie 2na) while waiting; but all in all the performance was spectacular. I’m surprised by the negativity. Bonnaroo was better this year than ever. I’ve been there for 6 years straight. This festival is about music first and money second. This is obvious to 99% people who go.

he is (unmetionable) at anytime.

Kayne SUCKS | 6/21/2008, 3:11 pm EST

Look, Kayne is maybe one of the most untalented, worthless, pieces of crap masquerading as an “artist” ever. He should have been booed by the Bonnaroo crowd whether he was late or not.

Does Ray LeMoine has the balls to compare Jimi Hendrix with Kanye West. If he does, then he needs to cut them off. Stupid idiot.

Kanye west’s show was basically a lamer version of the flaming lips UFO show that they have been touring for several years. The biggest tragedy that occured at the Kanye west show at bonnaroo wasn’t the fact that we had to wait more than an hour and a half for him to come on, it wasn’t the fact that his show wasn’t worth watching, and it wasn’t because people missed other good shows to see him. It was a tragedy because so many people have this idea of who kanye west is and the pompous asshole that he comes across as but were still willing to give him a chance at bonnaroo this year with me being one of those people. People really don’t want artists who try as hard as Kanye West to fail but it is completely different when a performer lets you down. Kanye was given a golden opportunity to showcase his talents, instead he blew his chance to make thousands of new fans by not just focusing on the music which is what bonnaroo is really about.

p.s. I was hoping that kanye would actually use glow in the dark objects on stage instead of it feeling just like a weird music video.

I was mostly pissed that I skipped Phil Lesh and Sigur Ros to get a good view for Kanye…so it was the loss of other great sets more than the delay of Kanye coming on.

How can Kaine West go any where near authentic musicians? He is a complete joke, and rap/hip hop is the weakest form of human expression to date. Rap is like taking a dump: Anybody can do it; it’s all about the same, no matter who does it; and it always stinks….
