Sick Video…Scaggs is the only good thing about RS these days…and MMJ are better than Pearl Jam.

Mike | 6/19/2008, 6:47 pm EST

What a shock. Someone on a message board dissing Pearl Jam. That’s a new one. It amazes me that they continue to be so polarizing. I have seen both bands live, and Pearl Jam blows MMJ out of the water. MMJ are a nice band, but Pearl Jam continue to hold the mantle of best rock band in the world, a title they have held for roughly 17 years. Outside of Arcade Fire, no one approaches their live shows. Read the reviews from Roo. Pearl Jam stole the show and turned casual fans into die hards.

a_horse | 6/19/2008, 6:49 pm EST

That’s a stupid statement. A good opinion but a stupid statement. MMJ are gonna be a great band for years to come but Pearl Jam is one of America’s greatest rock bands.

DC | 6/19/2008, 7:19 pm EST

“and MMJ are better than Pearl Jam.”

On Pearl Jams worst day, they still destroy MMJ.

Funky give me a break……

On the whole Pearl Jam are better musicians and Eddie Vedder has a much better voice.

suck on that

Overated | 6/19/2008, 9:17 pm EST

No, actually it’s an intelligent statement. It’s also shocking to see a dis on Pearl Jam (the most overated band ever!!!!!) on a message board for this magazine.

Vedder and Co. owe a lot to Layne Staley and Kurt Cobain passing on, Soundgarden breaking up, and Scott Weiland being in/out of rehab. All of the members and their respective bands of the same era have produced MUCH better music and have put on much better live performances back in the day. I know it’s hard for you delusional Vedder fans to take, but it’s the FUCKING TRUTH. DEAL WITH IT!!!!

Pearl Jam rank just above Candlebox and Screaming Trees from the glory days of Seattle, excluding STP, of course.

another trash talker | 6/20/2008, 3:05 am EST

in regards to overrateds comments on why pearl jam are as big as they are:

sure, nirvana were extremely influential, because kurt cobain couldnt play a fucking guitar to save his life, just like 75% of people who play guitar now, everyone needs hope ya know? i wont even touch alice in chains and soundgarden, since i love them, but soundgarden sounded pretty weak on down on the upside, the album had some great moments, but as a whole, the band was spiraling downward fast. alice in chains were always great, yet staley couldnt get a grip on himself. STP? they dont deserve to be in this conversation. they copied and borrowed from every fucking seattle band out, and caught a good wave. so why is pearl jam great? they had a kickass debut, continued to produce stellar albums even through the death of grunge, and they do what they fucking want.

mike | 6/20/2008, 5:36 am EST

I’ve seen Pearl Jam at the Garden and they were on fire. I saw them in Albany and MMJ blew them off the stage.

Raindog | 6/20/2008, 8:55 am EST

People, people…can’t we all just get along. Music affects everyone in different ways and it’s only natural that different people will like different bands. I like both Pearl Jam and MMJ, but I don’t try to compare them… just enjoy them!

Both are Great!! | 6/20/2008, 1:32 pm EST

I have seen PJ 9 times and MMJ 8 times so I have some knowledge on the subject.

MMJ and PJ are equal in the diversity in their music. MMJ may have a slight edge. PJ has a little more depth lyrically. MMJ shows are much more jammed based and PJ’s are much more crowd involved, sing-along types. Both are amazing and should not be compared.

If you like neighter, then you are a panty waste Kanye West or Justin Timberlake lover.

umm | 6/20/2008, 1:48 pm EST

a band that drew record crowds at lolla last year and bonnaroo this year are probably pretty good. And when considering they’ve done far less promotion then most bands of their (or any) era, it’s that much more meanigful. If they continued making records like Ten, everyone would hate them for selling records. Instead, they put music and their fans first which has oddly earned them similar ire in some quarters. Either way, they epitomize integrity. They’re a good band, it’s a shame if you can’t recognize that.

mookie | 6/20/2008, 1:56 pm EST

agree w/ the last 2 posts – especially raindog. arguing over musical preferences is about as usefull as a poopy-flavored lollipop.

swany | 6/20/2008, 2:24 pm EST

Hoooold the phone, MIKE, I’m as big a pearl jam fan as anyone, they were my first favorite to go along with the smashing pumpkins in the early 90’s among others, but the flaming lips have the best live shows ive ever seen. dave matthews band is no slouch either in terms of quality of sounds. just an opinion.. I love MMJ as well, actually saw both them and PJ at lolla last year. great time. pearl jam was the best.

klace | 6/20/2008, 3:09 pm EST

If you are knocking pearl jam than u haven’t seen them live. The greatest rock n roll show on earth. And to be a douchebag like others above my pj tally is 23 and mmj 6. Both great bands but Pearl Jam rules!

Cory | 6/20/2008, 11:24 pm EST

I’ve seen Pearl Jam twice. Both of which have been preceded by My Morning Jacket. In both cases, MMJ totally eclipsed Pearl Jam. Their sound is fresh and vibrant, whereas Pearl Jam just sound like they are trying to crank our their greatest hits. And Eddie’s attempt at making “politcal” statements at their shows are weak. I wish I could feel more for Pearl Jam’s music. I just don’t care anymore. My Morning Jacket just seems to be more passionate now. Times change. It’s just how it goes.

bigmikeosley | 6/21/2008, 1:44 am EST

Not better or worse, just different. I am happy to say I watch the full 8 hours (Pearl Jam and My Morning Jacket)at bonnaroo. I didn’t come to see either of the bands. I was there for Levon Helm, Vampire Weekend, Robert Randolph, BB King, Willie Nelson, and Phil Lesh. I thought Pearl Jam was just going to be like on the radio but they came out of left field with some spectacular stuff. A little political but good. Now for MMJ, they sort of changed my life. I was amazed with how diverse their music was. From playing James Brown to Motely Crue, and the collection of songs that they wrote were something else. Can they just split the gold like Jimmy McElroy and Chazz Michael Michaels. MMJ being Michaels of coarse!!!

Arch Stanton | 6/21/2008, 4:17 am EST

Why do these people insist on commenting about music when they have such complete ignorance regarding it. If only Vedder would have vacated the music scene in 1992 or whenever his last decent music came out we wouldnt have to be listening to Pearl Jams lame attempts at sounding even remotely influential now. At least Cobains catalog of tunes stands tall and if he had lived would have removed himself from the sellout standings that Vedder so desperatly craves. Twenty years from now Pearl Jam will be compared to Maroon 5. Long Live Cobain. Plain and simple.

bill | 6/21/2008, 4:47 am EST

I don’t understand the appeal with My Morning Jacket. To me they’re as stupid as their name. (i’m not legitimizing them with an acronym). I saw them at Bonnaroo in ‘03 and was not impressed. They’re boring and lack direction. The’re studio stuff is even worse.

Anonymous | 6/21/2008, 6:04 am EST

everyone loves talking shit on Pearl Jam…..comparing them to nirvana and stuff…..they sound NothinG alike. Pearl Jam has the whole surfer influence from vedder, and the retarded hair metal/hendrix/stadium rock vibe from everyone else, and nirvana is an angry, depressed, confused, talented man creating music as salve for his inner wounds…..and MMJ is tight but they tend to go overboard in different ways is all; and i find it annoyingly hilarious how much rolling stone is starting to push them. RS will do anything to get behind a band before they get big, but they never will because their writers don’t have the right ear–they’re like the guys in high school that got way into the bands that everyone else worked hard to find out about, and then they tell everyone how much they like them so that they look cool………

Tucker | 6/21/2008, 9:56 am EST

MMJ and Pearl Jam are both great bands on the scene today. I know PJ can be polarizing, simply because they’ve been around a long time, but both bands are tremendous live. Ask most rock fans, i think they’ll agree.

You’ve also got to throw in the Flaming Lips (who’s better than Wayne Coyne and gang) and Wilco as great great live acts on the scene today (i guess in terms of bigger name acts).

Arch Stanton | 6/21/2008, 12:43 pm EST

Anonymous. Keep it that way. Comparin Pearl Jam to Nirvana just isnt going to happen. As far as Cobain being refered to as depressed and such in his writing. Thats called his perceptivness of his generation. Cobain has and is the single greatest songwriter, musician of all time. Vedder, the former high school most likely to succeed vote getter is a representative of all things wrong while trying to maintain that poser wanna be whatever. When Vedder speaks most of us tune out and know whole heartedly that if not for Kurt he would probably be selling junk bonds on Wall Street chasing glory and attention that way.

To the poster below me | 6/21/2008, 1:02 pm EST

“Cobain has and is the single greatest songwriter, musician of all time.”

That is completely idiotic for so many different reasons on so many levels. To suggest Cobain was a better musician than Bach; Hendrix; Charlie Christian, etc… is too ridiculous to even be considered.
People like you are the same people who said the world is flat & we’re the center of the universe, with a smug – knowing smile on your face.
Some Nirvana fans are still very bitter that Nirvana & Kurt are long gone – whereas Pearl Jam & Eddie Vedder continue to get more popular & legendary with time. ‘Into The Wild’ was probably the most critically acclaimed thing Eddie has done yet.
I believe that a lot of Nirvana fans are worried/ intimidated that Pearl Jam may be more admired nowadays, if not more popular.

To the poster below me "Arch" | 6/21/2008, 1:04 pm EST

Also – it’s completely idiotic that you would use Eddie being voted the most likely to succeed as some kind of insult – it shows the frame of mind you have in your own life – as if being a failure is cool. If someone is voted most likely to succeed, that is something to be proud of – it’s something to be respected & looked upon… That takes a lot of hard work. For you to try to use a good thing like that as an insult really just makes you look like a failure with very low standards & expectations… And no, that isn’t “cool” Arch boy

First the quote,

“Vedder, the former high school most likely to succeed vote getter is a representative of all things wrong while trying to maintain that poser wanna be whatever. When Vedder speaks most of us tune out and know whole heartedly that if not for Kurt he would probably be selling junk bonds on Wall Street chasing glory and attention that way. ”

It is so sad that you think Eddie being voted most likely to succeed in high school is embarrassing & an insult. It shows what a failure you are in your life kid… For someone to be voted the most likely to succeed – they must be a hard worker… Right? And you think that’s something to look down upon or be embarrassed by? To be a hard worker? That’s why you’re a loser Arch – you have a weak heart & mind.

Also, you said when Eddie spoke, most people tuned out… That’s why Pearl Jam sold more albums than Nirvana then, right?
You poor sap, you’re pitiful.

superhappyfunbrett | 6/21/2008, 1:09 pm EST

i liked pearl jam before they overdosed on their classic rock influences. (as a huge neil young/doors/who fan, PJ’s albums from No Code on ward, the guitars, can feel like their being sampled rather than played.) eddie vedder is the only reason i can still stomach them anymore – he’s a true lover of music, with a sincerity that is still there. but the lack of originality in the band’s music has worn them down into completely depending upon their live act. it’s great to see them still around, but they are far from relevant anymore. (they have the honor of being one of the first nostalgic acts of their generation.) MMJ is amazing, but they may have peaked with the near perfect Z. (Evil Urges feels so desperate to make waves that it loses out on the quality of songwriting.) as far as kurt cobain goes… i wish he had had a chance to make a song with an oboe in it.

In comparing Pearl Jam to MMJ. | 6/21/2008, 1:19 pm EST

‘Evil Urges’ is the fifth album from MMJ… Pearl Jam has eight. Go back to Pearl Jam’s fifth album, “Yield”, & tell me that isn’t a more fun & youthful album than Evil Urges… It is.
If you’re gonna compare them, do it album by album… Let’s see how great MMJ is by the time they make their 8th – I doubt it’ll hold up as well as Pearl Jam’s eighth.
Evil Urges is excellent, by the way.

Cobain.. Best songwriter ever? | 6/21/2008, 1:43 pm EST

What?

Cobain was a gifted songwriter – no question. However his songwriting talent pales in comparison to the likes of Bob Dylan; John Lennon & Neil Young.

Eddie Vedder is also a better songwriter than Kurt Cobain.

lukin | 6/21/2008, 2:04 pm EST

all i have to say is this- if you say you don’t prefer pearl jam’s music, that’s fine. but to say “they suck” or they rip off the seattle sound? that just shows YOU DON’T KNOW SHIT ABOUT MUSIC! i’m sure 99% of rolling stone’s employees would agree, whether they’re fans of pj or not. why are you even on this site?

lukin | 6/21/2008, 2:27 pm EST

this is for arch stanton- i guess we’ll see if pj is compared to maroon5 twenty years from now (my money’s on not), but it’s clear that you’re comparable with maroon5 now!

Kentucky Thunder | 6/21/2008, 4:41 pm EST

Evil Urges is a huge disappointment. I’m almost embarrassed for Jim James and Co. For those of you discovering MMJ 8 years too late – start with At Dawn and work your way fwd.

As for best big name live acts – Radiohead, My Morning Jacket, Arcade Fire

Arch Stanton | 6/21/2008, 9:10 pm EST

I did write my entire post with the same “smug” look on my face that i have now on my face. As far as Vedder receiving “most likely” it figures you consider that an achievement. Not sure your upbringing but those who garnered that in my time and or any of our times were the real losers. I have achieved a certain amount of success in my own life but continue to live without comprimising and following others. Into The Wild was a Sean Penn classic with a bland Vedder composed pile of nothing. If i would have known the likes of persons like yourself would have commented on my post, i would have backed off completly. It leaves my smug expression torn with dissappointment that even today persons such as yourself make our society boring and lead by tools easily lead by the likes of vedder and his talentless efforts. Its quite sad in fact. Smug now removed.

Rewards Arch got in school | 6/21/2008, 10:23 pm EST

Least likely to succeed
Most likely to failure
The dumbest person in the school
The one least likely to get laid
the worst taste in music
the worst opinions on anything

Rewards Eddie got in school?
Most likely to succeed
- Eddie wins.

“Into The Wild was a Sean Penn classic with a bland Vedder composed pile of nothing. If i would have known the likes of persons like yourself would have commented on my post, i would have backed off completly.”

One of the main things that made Into The Wild a classic was the WILDLY POPULAR soundtrack to the movie, thanks to Eddie Vedder.
Of course you would’ve backed off completely if you knew people such as us would’ve responded to your posts, because we’re much smarter than you & you’re scared by that.

Arch Stanton | 6/22/2008, 3:57 pm EST

Thanks for the below message. My over sized ego needed it. In all my deep pockets of despair i vow to however never concede that Vedder is nothing more than an even par songwtiter. Ive seen Pearl Jam on numerous occasions…the most memorable here at The Cow Palace in 91 with Nirvana and the Chili Peppers for the benfit concert that paved the road for Kurt to solifify his post as the spokeperson of our generation, and they were decent. But proclaiming Vedder as a great songwriter is absurd. I hear he is a decent surfer. Not sure if Lennon or any other talents were surfers. Kind of makes me wonder.

Duncan Hines | 6/22/2008, 5:51 pm EST

Pearl Jam and My Morning Jacket toured together 2 years ago. Does anyone remember that? Also, no band – not even Metallica – NO BAND has a more devoted group of haters than Pearl Jam. They still kick all kinds of ass though (Pearl Jam, that is. Not the haters.)

Jon G. | 6/23/2008, 1:43 pm EST

This board is reaffirming to me: I have nothing against Vedder or Pearl Jam, but songwriting was never their strength. It is absolutely true that RS has had a love affair with the band, at the expense of better tunesmiths like STP. That was one of two glaring errors the mag has made: Dissing STP, and a little British group named Led Zeppelin.

Rock Music Rules | 6/23/2008, 5:23 pm EST

Cobains a dead door knob. He killed himself years ago. Nirvana fans hate the fact Vedder sings with Cobain’s ideals on a regular basis and Pearl Jam is being considered one of the greatest bands of all time. I know it hurts your boy off’d himself because Nirvana was breaking up but deal with it boys. Cobain is now a rotted corpse. Vedder plays MSG tonight. The world is as it should be.

Grunge Girl | 6/23/2008, 5:32 pm EST

I agree that Pearl Jam is the best of the bunch from the 90’s bands. STP and Nirvana are over rated. Nirvana became popular after Mr. Cobain shot himself, but that happens all the time when the young die. I think Soundgarden and AIC were also damn good bands. Pearl Jam is more credible in the music circles than Nirvana plain and simple. Neil Young Mick Jagger and Robert Plant are proof to that. They all love PJ and Vedder and have sung with him many times. Mr. Cobain was a jealous man who was addictted to drugs and then killed himself. I just wish his fans would listen to Nirvana’s 30 songs and keep quiet, enjoy them. He wrote them for you, and all you do, is track down articles about Pearl Jam and post things about them. Think about it, your guy is dead, no new music for 15 years and Pearl Jam is headlining Bonnaroo. Funny if you think about it, aint it. Hey track down the article about the DC concert last night and post about it, hahaha.

cotton | 6/23/2008, 7:07 pm EST

are you serious grunge girl? nirvana didn’t become popular until after Cobain killed himself? really? do you actually believe that? Because Nevermind knocked Michael Jackson off the charts and became a number one hit. Nirvana was huge after Nevermind was released and has continued success (last year or the year before Cobain made 50 million dollars from Nirvana sales and merchandise). Nowhere in your entire paragraph did you say something sensible. “Think about it your guy is dead, no new music for 15 years and Pearl Jam is headlining bonaroo.” If your trying to argue that Pearl Jam is much better than Nirvana, go ahead but make some sense or don’t post.

on a side note, Pearl Jam is my favorite band, and I just saw them in DC. They put on a great live show.

Neil | 7/1/2008, 8:47 pm EST

I was at Bonnaroo and saw MMJ and Pearl Jam perform. Pearl Jam was transcendent, MMJ was like magic! They are different bands and both will rock your face off live. Why the big deal about who is better? And where did Nirvana come in? Bonnaroo was great in itself because it was about people who love music being together because the music they love was being played live all over the place, all day and night! I never saw any arguments of fights. I would also say that Against Me! put on an uplifting, politically charged show that rivaled the best of this year’s sets. I’ll leave it at that because my dog needs to take a crap. I’m gonna print off these comments below and recycle-reuse them for poop pick up! If you weren’t there you don’t know what you are talking about.

BigMikeOsley | 7/1/2008, 9:39 pm EST

If Kurt Cobain was still alive Nirvana would be headlining Bonnaroo along with Pearl Jam. Get over yourselves people! Enjoy more music, your life might be better……..That is why My Morning Jacket is so appealing to me. Each of their Cd’s seems to get better. Of coarse I am into classic R&B and Soul music. Them covering songs like Get Down On It, Cold Sweat, and Call Tyrone really made the concert something special. Mainstream music has lost its soul!

Monwel | 7/2/2008, 9:15 pm EST

Sweet video, looks like they were passin’ something before the turned the cameras on… I love MMJ, they’re fantastic live and all their records are fantastic, they are always pushing their music forward to new places. Pearl Jam is fantastic. They’ve stood the test of time, they’ve got a nice catalog of songs. And for everyone going back and forth about who’s better, its just music folks. Nothing more, nothing less. Too many people try to make music more important than it should. And too many people think they know what everyone else should be listening to. Just love music for what it is. Music.

Chris | 12/2/2008, 10:07 pm EST

Mike looks so shocked when MMJ mentioned how Pearl Jam changed them! Hahaha! That was the best part of it. The look of shock on his face!

Neal | 12/17/2008, 5:12 am EST

Why keep comparing music as “better” or “worse”?

It’s so fuggin ridiculous.

Seems such a waste.

It’s ART.

dig it or move on right??
