Girl Talk Unleashes Pay What You Want Album “Feed the Animals”

6/19/08, 10:40 am EST

Mash-up guru Girl Talk’snew album Feed the Animals is now up for download on the Illegal Art Website. Like Radiohead’s In Rainbows, Feed the Animals will be available for whatever sum listeners deem worthy, even if they want to pay nothing. Girl Talk does have some incentives if you do choose to pay, however: $5 gets you FLAC files and a seamless mix of the album, while $10 gets you that and a physical copy of Feed when they become available. If you choose to download the album, you’re met with a series of options of why you opted not to pay, making you confront your own guilt. The album itself seems more focused and less jittery than Girl Talk’s previous album Night Ripper. Lil Wayne, Lil Jon, Avril Lavigne, Rod Stewart, Blackstreet, Procol Harum, Ace of Base, Kanye West, the Band and that song from Dawson’s Creek all get dropped in, and that’s just the first three tracks.

anyone hear anything about a 2009 album?

You can listen to the album streaming live in Myspace, so its preety naiive to argue that one chooses not to pay simply because some part of the cd is not suited to ones liking. They know what the cds gonna sound like, and if its something even remotely close to being worth paying for (and it truly is) the least that a person should do is to have the decency to pay for it. I planned on jacking it, but the guilt beat me to it. Its also there for 5 effing bucks, cheap people are so pathetic.

Hmmm, I just downloaded it for free because the simple act of filling out credit card forms was too much of a hassle. Is that bad?

i agree, this is for people who love music. night ripper was for people who like hype and surprizes.

this album is the most classic - refined - less juvenile

The “confront your own guilt” aspect” is a waste of time. Most people anymore have no guilt about not paying for an album being offered for free (if the consumer opts not to pay for it). Die-hards will pay for anything by a band they like so much, and casual music connoisseurs just want to check out an act they may never have heard of without tying themselves down to paying much, if anything, for something they might not like.

“Guilt” is irrelevant. There’s no guilt about not wanting to pay cash hand over fist for something you might not like. That’s the way of the music biz anymore—buying a CD to get more filler than meat still won’t fly.

Its not as good as Night Ripper. The transitions in parts are weak. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve listened to it about 5 times today, but if you’ve seen him live and looked at all the youtube videos then there aren’t many suprises. What ev, i liked the nasty glitch shit best, so my opinion probably represents the minority.

it took a few plays to grow on me, and it’s not as “OHSHITTHATJUSTHAPPENED” as Night Ripper (he meant it when he said less quick-cuts) but it’s a much more solid mix. more perfect-feel-good-hit-of-the-s ummer than non-stop-party-jam.

Yah, its pretty much amazing.

After one listen I’ve already decided its in my top ten albums of 2008 so far.

Just downloaded it this morning and love it. It’s even better than Night Ripper. Great job GT.
