Coldplay’s “Viva” Posts Big First Day Sales

6/19/08, 9:05 am EST

Could Chris Martin be joining Lil Wayne in saving the music industry? One week after Weezy’s Tha Carter III sold 423,000 in its first day of sales on its way to a platinum debut, Coldplay’s Viva La Vida posted similarly big numbers Tuesday, selling 316,000 copies. Viva is expected to usurp TC3 as the SoundScan king next week on its way to expected sales in the 700-750,000 range. If Coldplay can hit that number, it will be the first time since 2005 that albums with sales over 700,000 topped the charts in consecutive weeks. 50 Cent’s The Massacre single-handedly last conquered that feat. Coldplay’s last album, X&Y, sold 737,000 in its debut week in 2005. Coldplay’s big Tuesday is the third-best since SoundScan launched their Building Chart last year, with only Kanye West and Lil Wayne faring better. Viva La Vida also broke the record for most iTunes downloads in a single day, previously held by Jack Johnson. Marketing, Marketing! X&Y was weak and this album has been Marketed everywhere. MTV wouldn’t stop letting you know it was out.

Coldplay is good but not that good. Oasis’ last album was better than X&Y but Coldplay are the media darlings and they are marketed everywhere. Go to the Myspace hompage and it’s the first thing you see.

Enough already……..not even in the top 10 of albums so far this year.

Ohh & yes I have heard it.

The only thing ever worth mentioning about Oasis is that they’re overrated hacks who will never be the Beatles no matter how hard they try. They aren’t deep, they aren’t talented, they aren’t gods. Get over it, Britain, Oasis are nothing.

And K, Oasis tunes are in every stupid telecom and business commercial made since the 90s, so that fucks your marketing argument.

For the record, I’m not a Coldplay fanatic. I just want to see the Oasis idolizing on the message boards end.

Hey everybody – stop hating on Coldplay already. These guys are YOUNG, it’s their fourth album for heaven’s sake. They never termed themselves to be Led Zeppelin or Radiohead or U2. They just write good pop tunes and that’s why precisely the Beatles are so revered today.

Their first album was stunning, the second one was good, and X&Y- well I liked that one too. Songs like ‘Trouble’, ‘Shiver’, ‘Yellow’, ‘Clocks’, ‘Speed of Sound’ are almost modern classics. It is just that it is very ‘in’ to diss Coldplay. Had U2 or one of those emo bands come out with something like Viva la Vida, the world would be head over heals over them.

It is heartening to see the record buying (/downloading) public agree with me, even if snobbish critics don’t.

I think that it is worth the hype. It’s a great whole album, now that I’ve had a chance to listen a few times. Top 10 albums so far?

I would say probably so.

I think Viva la Vida is a nice change of pace for Coldplay. As much as I enjoyed the other three albums, the whole piano-pop thing was starting to get old. It’s in my top ten of the year, along with Tha Carter III, Consolers of the Lonely, and Weezer’s Red Album.

In my opinion, a few of their songs: “Strawberry Swing,” “Lost?,” “Violet Hill,” and “Viva La Vida,” are instant hits. Some people may beg to differ, but that’s alright.
I love how the falsetto singing isn’t so important anymore (not that I hated it), and in it’s place, a more wholesome voice comes in to take the stage.
The way the violins were used in “Viva La Vida,” and “Strawberry Swing,” reminded me of how awesome they always were.
Coldplay’s fourth album is pretty good. I’m definitely optimistic about this album selling 700k+.

Viva La Musica!

Viva La Coldplay!

With the music industry ailing in Web 2.0, Coldplay is the new harmonic elixir. The release of their latest CD, Viva La Vida, highlights the importance of integrating free content with new product distribution. The band strategically allowed fans to sample new songs on their website and then provided radio stations with the entire album. This all happened before the CD was released for purchase. What? Give away your product before the release date? This idea may even cause Ms. Jackson to have a wardrobe malfunction.

However instead of being exposed, Coldplay sold over 300,000 Units on its release date and even surpassed Jack Johnson’s record on Itunes for most songs downloaded in a single day. You mean people are willing to pay for content, after it is provided for free? I’m sorry, Ms. Jackson, but times have changed.

Coldplay’s distribution model highlights the importance of creating buzz via free content. The band spent no money allowing fans to sample songs on their website, which consequentially created brand ambassadors. Coldplay became the honey and we were the bees, creating buzz.

If Coldplay’s momentum continues, the band will have the biggest record for the music industry in years. Viva La Coldplay! Viva La Musica! Viva La Revolution!

The band is moving to the next phase of their career. It’s good to change things up once in awhile otherwise your art becomes stale. And stale this is not. On the contrary, “Viva La Vida” is a refreshing listen. The band was not affraid to experiment. Brian eno really brought out the best of the band. Can’t wait to see them in concert. Viva la coldplay!!!
