Tom Petty Blows Through Hits and Deep Cuts at MSG

6/18/08, 11:55 am EST

Early on in Tom Petty’s sold-out Madison Square Garden gig last night he uttered words rarely heard at his shows: “You probably don’t know this next one.” The band then launched into the super obscure 1999 Europe-only B side “Sweet William.” The bluesy, organ-heavy number was a clear indication this wasn’t going to be the typical nothing-but-the-hits Petty show he’s done on recent tours. With no new album to support, Petty was free to drag out the gems.

This doesn’t mean he avoided his massive arsenal of hits. The show began with a 1-2-3-4-5 punch of “You Wreck Me,” “Last Dance With Mary Jane,” “I Won’t Back Down,” “Even The Losers” and “Free Fallin’.” Nearly anyone else would save a song like the latter — which is so tailor made for arenas even the beer guys and ushers were singing along — but Petty has such a huge stable of war horses he could bust it out early with no problem. Rarities soon followed, such as the Traveling Wilburys’ “End of the Line,” which featured a few Heartbreakers subbing in for Petty’s absent bandmates and the Full Moon Fever track “A Face in the Crowd.”

Opening act Steve Winwood — who last played the Garden a few months ago during his reunion shows with Eric Clapton — came out midway through Petty’s set and led the Heartbreakers on killer versions of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home” and the Spencer Davis Group’s “Gimme Some Loving,” which featured blazing organ work by Winwood. Around this point it became abundantly clear that the Heartbreakers are one of the greatest backing bands out there. Any song is immeasurably enhanced by their playing, particularly guitarist Mike Campbell and keyboardist Benmont Tench. It’s no wonder they get so much session work when Petty is off the road.

The night wrapped up with the hit parade of “Learning to Fly,” “Don’t Come Around Here No More,” “Refugee” and the inevitable encore of “American Girl.” He’s probably played that song at every concert for over 30 years, but he still does it with intense passion and it still can make an arena full of drunk middle-aged white people jump up and down like nothing short of “Born to Run.” For the past few years Petty’s insisted his days of long tours are coming to an end. Hopefully he’s bluffing.

The Atlanta show in July will be my 8th Tom Petty Show (1st was the Rock and Roll Caravan tour 1987 w/ Ga Satellites and Del Fuegos) He always puts on a great show and always has a KILLER opening band. I’d love to see WOMAN IN LOVE, HAVE LOVE WILL TRAVEL, WALLS, GREAT WIDE OPEN, L RAIN, ROOM AT THE TOP OF THE WORLD, JAMMIN ME - guess these will have to wait for the 2009 tour

whalespoon | 6/19/2008, 1:44 pm EST

My 13 and 11 year old sons think that Tom Petty/Heartbreakers are the best band ever–better than anyone their friends listen to. Saw them in Nashville a few years ago (they were awesome!) and got tickets to the Charlotte show next month–it’ll be the highlight of our summer.

Tommy | 6/19/2008, 12:47 pm EST

When the article was written the show was at the garden last night. Show 6/17/08 - Article 6/18/08.
_____PETTY ROCKS!!

ol'Denno | 6/19/2008, 12:02 pm EST

Gary = Canary

Wish I could have been there.

Nicole | 6/19/2008, 11:56 am EST

Too bad the show wasn’t at the Garden last night. I was there at THE PRUDENTIAL CENTER in Newark NJ!! You need to fix your headline! Anyway…Show was AWESOME! Thanks Tom!! :)

gary | 6/19/2008, 10:00 am EST

Saw Petty once a few years back and left halfway though. One of the most boring shows I’d ever been to. By the looks of this setlist things haven’t changed.

cwesleyg | 6/19/2008, 9:24 am EST

Went to see him at the second stop on this tour… Palace of Auburn Hills (Detroit Piston’s home) Took my 16 year old son. What a great show…. maybe the best concert I’ve ever been to… Winwood warmed us up great, and Tom and the band were just phenominal!

auramac | 6/18/2008, 8:17 pm EST

Pretty consistent from the very beginning on- could be the greatest working rock band out there, and Petty shows no sign of burnout. Personally, I’ve always preferred him to Springsteen, and his band was a great backup for Dylan. I once read he performed “Goldfinger” in concert. I’d love to hear (and see) that on YouTube or somewhere some day..

kcv | 6/18/2008, 6:08 pm EST

isn’t his MUDCRUTCH lp a new lp technically speaking?

MW | 6/18/2008, 5:19 pm EST

I saw Tom at Pittsburgh,PA and he was amazing! Tom you rock!

t | 6/18/2008, 4:55 pm EST

lots of hits missing from the set - don’t do me like that, you got lucky, the waiting, into the great wide open - but he’s done them all a million times. must have been a phenomenal show.

rfmitch67 | 6/18/2008, 4:21 pm EST

I love TP….but, I’m sorry, that set list sucks…with the exception of American Girl, Refugee and Even The Losers, virtually nothing for early stuff…way too much from FMF and Wildflowers….

Earlene Rose Wilbury | 6/18/2008, 2:41 pm EST

Tom Petty RULES! Everyone should go to one of his shows at least once in their lifetime…are ya listening, kids? We old folks already know!

Ms. L | 6/18/2008, 2:13 pm EST

Tom, I’ve never seen you in concert before. Thank you for making it the best rock concert I’ve ever seen. The acoustic vers of Learning to Fly was breathtaking!

zbassman | 6/18/2008, 2:11 pm EST

I’ve seen TP&HB twice and have tix for the show in San Antonio in August. The first time I saw TP I remember walking out saying to my friend “Just how many freaking hits does this guy have?”

TP can write some great songs and Mike C is one of the great under-rated guitarists around. Together TP&HB are just spectacular live. Right up there with Springsteen for best live shows ever.

Can’t wait until August!

ron | 6/18/2008, 1:48 pm EST

last night was my second time seeing them and they never fail to put on a mind blowing show. first with stevie nicks at bonnaroo and now with stevie winwood at msg. excellent.

redraiderdc | 6/18/2008, 1:44 pm EST

I saw them play outside of DC last summer. Stevie Nicks joined them for a few songs. The whole thing was intense and probably one of the greatest shows I’ve ever seen. He is true rock royalty.

Lauren | 6/18/2008, 1:44 pm EST

tom you put on one hell of a show-i officially turned 20 last night at your concert and it couldn’t have been a better birthday

ps-thanks for playin end of the line thats my fav travelin willburies song

Majed Tomeh | 6/18/2008, 1:40 pm EST

Few experiences, if any, will ever equal the energy and brilliance of Tom Petty and all the Heartbreakers this past Friday (June 13) in Boston. Out of this world. Stunning. From the first instant on the stage to the last. And the two Winwood songs were unbelievable. This band was completely in sync, down to the micro second.

The audience’s energy determines how perfectly and exquisitely an already-great band can perform.

Bayliss | 6/18/2008, 1:28 pm EST

TP is the real deal. And is in the Dylan leauge of brilliant.

Jessica | 6/18/2008, 1:23 pm EST

Dear Mr. Petty & The Heartbreakers, Looking forward to Omaha in July. Remember its my birthday, so be sure to stop by for some cake.
