The Real “Chinese Democracy” May Have Leaked

6/18/08, 5:30 pm EST

As the inexorable march towards Chinese Democracy stomps along, the dangling carrots of periodic leaks and hints have made the decade-plus dry spell all the more tantalizing. But today’s latest batch of tunes — which are purported to be, finally, the real thing — really may signal the end of the wait. [UPDATE: Not shockingly, the site may already be down]. With all the curious “free Dr. Pepper” talk a few months back reeking sweetly of a publicity stunt to come, the timing doesn’t feel all that off for tunes to really start making it through the cracks.

Today’s leak features nine tracks, and besides the six which have already made the rounds (including a stunning version of “Madagascar,” complete with a chorus of Axls singing on top of each other), a trio of thus far unheard and unnamed songs offer further suggestions as to what may be around the corner. Axl’s howl is unmistakable, and one track features a porno-guitar wah-wah, hard-edged synths, flamenco guitar and delicate piano for what’s perhaps the most unique mish-mash of sounds in a GNR tune to date.

If it’s just another batch of demos, then they’re perhaps the most well-produced and complete demos in the history of the industry. And damn, they’re really pretty good.

Demos or the real thing?? Who knows.

Do people like it? Some do, some don’t. I fuckn’ love it.

Who’s playing on it? Probably Thal, Stinson and Finick. Forgive my spelling, I didn’t take the time to look it up.

Will it ever come out? Who knows. But I hope so.

Is it as good as old GNR? That’s a matter of opinion.

Is it better than a lot of the shit out there today? I fuckin’ think so.

Better than VR? I am liking it more. Seems experimental while VR stayed closer to the roots.

Is all of this a matter of opinion? Yep. So hate mine as I hate yours.

The Intl said there’s a Ted Nugent concert coming up in Detroit. I couldn’t care less about your Cat scratch fever. Scat scratch is what it is to me.

JP | 6/23/2008, 3:53 pm EST

these leaks are 10 times better than the crap out there today, these are still just demos from before 2006 as Bumblefoot stated on his web site…the finished product is going to be epic and amazing…congrats AXL

Roy79 | 6/23/2008, 2:36 pm EST

The leaks are awesome!!!! Can’t wait for Chinese Democracy to be released!!! Axl Rose is 1 talented sun of a gun!!!!!!!

Josh | 6/23/2008, 10:57 am EST

Hey Axl, Queensryche called they want their music back.

If the leaks are any indication this is going to be the hindenberg of album releases. It will be the musical equlivilent of Ishtar. Where’s the bluesy sound? Oh yeah- it went out the door with Izzy and Slash.

GNR era gone | 6/23/2008, 12:13 am EST

The GNR era is gone. Axl’s traveling band of constantly rotating musicians is just an attempt to try to make some money. ALso, A real artist would not wait 14+ years to create an album. It just doesn’t take that long. If his heart was in it, he would’ve been in the studio everyday writing and recording and then having an album that he could be proud of but he can’t keep anybody in the gnr lineup. ALl he has is the name but he has turned the name GNR into a joke. The original GNR era was the best and can’t be beat. I heard the new songs out of curiosity and it took him 14 years to come up with these average rock songs? Cmon man, why don’t you just reunite the original band (if the others are willing) and make some real music or try a solo record? Put something out already so you can try to salvage some form of dignity as well as a fanbase!

ct | 6/22/2008, 12:17 pm EST

The fact of the matter is that Chinese Democracy will be a brilliant record. It is by far the best collection of aggressive music to come out in 15 years! This new music can only be described as complex, articulate, thoughtful, passionate, eclectic and emotional. Great art is created in the ability to express the truth, the truth as the artist see it. Give this new music a chance. At the very least, this collection of music is the result of an artist toiling in the studio and wrestling with demons for almost two decades. The labor of an artist trying to exorsize the music he hears in his head. “This album has been an unbearably long and incomprehensible journey, a bad dream where one wakes up only to find they are still in the nightmare.” That in itself makes this music at the very least interesting, if not brilliant.

boolannn | 6/22/2008, 10:30 am EST

They’re definitely weird in parts, lots of synth intro’s and drum machines. It’s not what you expect, but when they kick in, they’re all pretty good. It’s nto that the synth stuff is bad either, it’s just unexpected and it throws you off.

John | 6/22/2008, 4:58 am EST

Ray yo must be smokin crack, these new songs are kick ass Go listen to them Guns N’ Roses wanna-be’s like Velvet Revolver (oh that’s right, they broke up) point is, hard rock/heavy metal music today SUCKS (which is bands that came out around 2000-2008, only thing that was gooda bout 2002 & MTV at that time was Guns N’ Roses was on the Video Music Awards that year

MTV sold out and started to suck as a network after they canceled Headbanger’s Ball (With Riki Rachman 1987-1995)(not that fuckin crap on MTV2,they called Headbanger’s Ball now)& Beavis and Butthead was taken off the air

Ray L | 6/21/2008, 11:16 pm EST

If these demos are any indication of what the album will sound like, I won’t mind waiting another dozen years before I hear them again. What a load of crap!!!

benny | 6/21/2008, 10:22 pm EST

Rolling Stone: Get Guns N’ Roses on the cover of your magazine. I guarantee you call up Axl’s manager and offer a cover-story and the album will fall out from their hands.

heartoflothian: I agree, but “Better” has an incredible hook man and these are just demos and Slash has lost his touch. I loved the guy back when but most of his VR stuff was recycled and mediocre. Lost the passion.

The Rocker of all Rockers | 6/21/2008, 5:53 pm EST

Chris: Good call.

Hellbillysatan: I think that spent is kidding (or at least I hope so).

Dottingis: First, listen to the demos. Then, comment.

Chris | 6/21/2008, 5:35 pm EST

These songs sound more cleaned up than the last set of GNR ‘demos’ that were leaked. I am happy to a hear that a version of ‘Rhiad and the Bedouins’ is finally out there as a studio version. The track labeled ‘Song #2′, which is most likely ‘Prostitute’, is excellent. It’s where GNR left off following UYI. I’ve always loved ‘Better’ and ‘IRS’. These tracks sound better in these new versions. It’ll take me some time to get into ‘If the World’ but I appreciate the fusion that Rose is attempting to create stylistically.

I love GNRs epic ballads and look forward to hearing more tracks like ‘Madagascar’ and ‘Prostitute’(?)

Now, if Azoff/Gould can just get this thing out there. Hell, they should put all of the finished material out there at one time (rumored to be multiple albums worth). Axl will just have to keep his fragile ego together and bear in mind that there will always be people out there that don’t like his music regardless of however many times he chooses to re-edit/re-master his demos.

heartoflothian | 6/21/2008, 4:38 pm EST

I always thought Axl had all the talent when it came to lyrics and I believe he was behind the melodicism of G’N'R songs. Slash was the guitar god who came up with the amazing riffs. Axl was Jagger and Slash was Richards. I think thats why the Velvet Revolver Albums had great guitar riffs and solos, they were missing what is commonly called “the Hook” and als the beautiful melodicism of the original G’N'R. I’m not just talking about the ballads, even their heaviest and hardest rockng songs had a melodicism that made them stand out from all their contemporary hard rock/metal bands. I am 38 and fairly new to the internet and I dont know what websites to visit in order to access these songs. If someone who knows could address a comment on this topic to me, maybe we cold set up a way for you to send me the info. I suppose since no one has provided it in their comments, Rolling Stone must not allow it. But I would appreciate any help.

GN’R por siempre!

me | 6/21/2008, 1:22 pm EST

These leaks are all from 2002-2006, Ron Thal is not even on them and neither is Richard Fortus. They are just rough cuts of the songs and not even mastered. People can bash Axl all they want and say how these songs suck but its funny look at all the major sites picking up the story and a ton of radio stations are already playing the leaks. What other band gets their leaks played on the radio? NONE cept Guns n roses. If the world could be a huge radio hit and not on just rock stations. The fact is that was a radio head song or cold play people would be praising it, but since its guns n roses they expect AFD II which if they were real gnr fans would know Axl wanted to bury AFD back in 1989. Get out of the 80s and understand Axl wanted to progress and that he has

dottingis | 6/21/2008, 1:45 am EST

G ‘n’ R used to play balls out rock ‘n’ roll. What does Axl play these days? Your description of it definitely makes the music sound pretty fruity.

Sally. B | 6/21/2008, 12:41 am EST

Wow!!.. Songs sound great!!! Was a bit sceptical at first but after hearing them I cant wait for the album to be released!!!!!.

Hellbillysatan | 6/21/2008, 12:35 am EST

Hahahahaaaa… Rebbecca F, you have won the biggest f*#%wit award for 2008. If you come on here to read bout lil Wayne then why post a comment and why bother reading this?…. GUNS N’ ROSES KICK ASS SONGS SOUND AWESOME.

Joe | 6/20/2008, 9:01 pm EST

“Bumblefoot and Buckethead” Best Reality Show Ever

Once Steven Adler gets out of celeb rehab, we all know what’s coming…..Stone Temple Pilots could not even think of turning down the money they were offering for a reunion; can you imagine what they will give GNR? A small country? Either way, I am all over Chinese Democracy based on what I have heard so far. Axl still knows how to bring it, regardless of his myriad of issues

Fozzie Bear | 6/20/2008, 1:38 pm EST

Hey “The Intl”, go pull your substandard pud to Franz Ferdinand, The Tings Tings, and Panic! at the Disco while we check out some riveting tracks from a idiot savant named Axl Rose and his revolving door of musicians. WOCKA WOCKA WOCKA!!!

JP | 6/20/2008, 12:36 pm EST

Bumblefoot confirmed on his board “Old Demos”, like I guessed yesterday. No one has a clue what songs will make it, my guess is these last 2 won’t. Yes, Axl has been all over the board since 94. From Industrial to Jazz, so when it’s finally released it should be very interesting to see what made the cut. I just hope we all are young enough to still hear buy then.

Steve | 6/20/2008, 12:17 pm EST

Na, na, na, na, na, na,..not better

ted | 6/20/2008, 11:49 am EST

The songs are much different than what Guns n Roses were back in the late 80’s and early 90’s but i really do like all the new material so far and these are only demos. So many different styles. In every song there is so much going on.

Ray | 6/20/2008, 3:35 am EST

Interesting Note.About a year ago,Rolling Stone’s Joe Levy (I believe his name is) gave readers the opportunity to ask whatever questions they liked.Well, mine was whether or not Axl could/would appear again on the cover to Rolling Stone. His anwser was something like “That would be nice.Talked to him at the ‘06 Vma’s,still waitin for CD”.Sooo … Seriously … Rolling Stone,if you can put Chris Martin,Chris Rock and The Hillz on your cover, for the love of God … Get Axl back for a cover story! The topic is obviously a hot one.Take advantage of the buzz. Both of you.

Ray | 6/20/2008, 3:27 am EST

Props to Rolling Stone for (again) taking the time to take a “real” listen to this latest batch of leaks.Back when “Better” and the rest first leaked,Brian Hiatt loved them.A while later,Rob Sheffield tore them apart, critisizing both “TWAT” and the title track. So here we are again.I just hope that if Rolling Stone rates these songs in their next “Download Now” section, they give them the same amount of love shown here.

Song #2 is a true gem … right up there with Madagascar,The Blues and Better. This already sounds like an amazing, clearly -epic album.

The Intl | 6/20/2008, 2:40 am EST

I cannot believe anyone cares about this asshole anymore. Hey all you testosterone-fueled guys: there’s a Ted Nugent concert comin up in detroit soon!! YEEEE-HAWW!!!

Dean | 6/20/2008, 2:31 am EST

Whatever versions of the tracks that leaked are, they sound really good.Looking forward to buying it whenever it comes out.I think it is a winner.

Hunter Hawkins | 6/20/2008, 12:16 am EST

If you do a search on Opera for Chinese Democracy Torrent it is the first result… took about 20 minutes to downlaod all 9 tracks. They are VERY GOOD!!! Better sounding and fleshed out than the last batch of “leaks”.
Robin Finck needs to get out of NIN for the fall and GNR need to tour and release this album.

Greg D | 6/19/2008, 11:45 pm EST

Unquestionably some of the best music I’ve heard in years, especially ‘Madagascar.’ Listening to the demo’s yesterday, I was brought back to the last time I felt so enthralled listening to music…when the ‘Use Your Illusion’ records came out. Axl is a timeless talent!

Josh | 6/19/2008, 11:27 pm EST

Yeah, much more refined but definitely still a demo. If they sound too refined for demos, well, whaddya think they spent the $13 mil on, braids? I doubt there will be any stock Pro Tools drum tracks on the final version.

Love the new tracks, though. My faith is temporarily renewed

Jro | 6/19/2008, 11:19 pm EST

Why don’t you suckas looking for it just look any of the most popular bittorrent websites. Also, can anyone name the cast of players on the tracks?

**UPDATE** | 6/19/2008, 10:54 pm EST

GNR guitarist bumblefoot has confirmed that these are OLD DEMOS!!

mullethead | 6/19/2008, 10:08 pm EST

Listen to this, then listen to Velvet Revolver. Anyone who doesn’t realize that Axl is 10 times more creative and driven than Slash is either deaf or in complete denial

DeadHorse | 6/19/2008, 9:34 pm EST

This is not a hoax….these are the most polished sounding works yet. I have finally realized the full potential of title track “Chinese Democracy”. This will be worth the wait, if we see it within the next 12 months…

These are old demos | 6/19/2008, 9:07 pm EST

GUNS N’ ROSES IS BACK, ONLY THAT IS THE IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!

Johnny B. | 6/19/2008, 5:25 pm EST

Consider that any good work of art takes time. Axl is a perfectionist and has a vision. He had to rebuild an entire band and find the right chemistry. Of course it took years! Whenever its finally released, it will be as close as it can be to his intent. After hearing these new tracks, I cant imagine the original lineup playing them, but this is the NEW GNR and I’ll be first in line at the record store. Remember them? Listen to The Blues. masterpiece.

Ali | 6/19/2008, 4:59 pm EST

I don’t think song number 2 is “Prostitute”. “Prostitute” is supposed to have an aggressive rhythm guitar part.

Ali

Song number 2 is believed to be titled Prostitute.

Listen closely to the last verse Axl says “Prostitute myself”

greg | 6/19/2008, 1:43 pm EST

Sounds great

Joel | 6/19/2008, 1:28 pm EST

Axl F*ckin’ Rules! Songs are amazing!!!

benny | 6/19/2008, 12:39 pm EST

Great sounding demos, not perfect. These are obviously old, but very high-quality, so don’t go making final judgments just yet everyone.

I really like “If The World” and the “Message” song even though they’re in a rough form.

Madagascar/There Was A Time/The Blues are incredible songs and if you can’t see that you’re probably stuck in 1987.

Again these are older demos, don’t make final judgments. Hopefully the record company can give Axl what he wants and make the album happen.

Good stuff New Lineup, seeing you in 2006 make me a believer.

Jonh | 6/19/2008, 11:57 am EST

Not finished, not off album, not mastered. Newer demos, that’s it. RS should be more careful about what they say is ‘off the record’. Yeah, great songs, but the 02 demos that leaked a couple years ago are..well, about the same.

“This I Love” (maybe)

[intro]
It seemed like forever and a day,
If my intentions are misunderstood,
please be kind, I’ve done all I should.
I won’t ask of you what I would not do.
Ooooh I saw the damage in you,
my fortunate one, the ending of you.

Why would they tell me to please… in my face…
When all of the reasons they don’t ask all over themselves to give way [?]

It’s not a question of whether my heart is true.
Seemed like I had to pull through.
Look for a new beginning, on you.
Ooooh I, I got a message for you oooo
Open away it’s when I’ve got you through [?]
Give what you have, what you might loose.

What would you say if I told you that I’m to blame?
And what would you do if I had to deny your name?
Where would you go if I told you I loved you, and then walked away.
Oooh ya.
Who should I tell if not for the ones that you could not say.
Oooh now.

I told you where’d I’d find you,
If no one doubts you, you should be careful with other’s [something]
Now they surround you,
All that it amounts to is love that you [something] for fortune and fame.

[guitar]

If my affects are misunderstood,
and you decide I’m up to no good,
don’t ask me to enjoy them just for you.

Ask yourself: what I would do to bring you down, myself
To live with fortune and shame.
Oooh ya.
You should have turned to the hearts of the ones, but you would not stay [?]
I told you where’d I’d find you,
all it amounts to is love that you [something] for fortune and fame.

[guitar, effects…outro.]

listened to them all… they are awesome… There’s obviously more tracks on the album (i highly doubt Axl would make Chinese Democracy 9 songs!), but already, I’d rank it just below Appetite For Destruction and above Use Your Illusion II. (way better than UYI I and Lies).

Blake | 6/18/2008, 5:49 pm EST

I cant get the website to come up, but I have heard demos of the song Better. I think that if its not over produced, it could be the best GnR song EVER
