Kid Rock Lashes Out Against iTunes, Endorses Illegal Downloading

6/18/08, 3:53 pm EST

In an interesting interview with the BBC, Kid Rock explained why most of his music isn’t available on iTunes. “The internet was an opportunity for everyone to be treated fairly, for the consumer to get a fair price, for the artist to be paid fairly, for the record companies to make some money,” Rock said. “[But iTunes is] an old system, where iTunes takes the money, the record company takes the money, and they don’t give it to the artists.” Rock went on to explain that he doesn’t mind people downloading his albums illegally as long as they buy tickets to his concerts. “I was telling kids: download it illegally, I don’t care. I want you to hear my music so I can play live. But I think they should steal everything. You know how much money the oil companies have? If you need some gas, just go fill your tank off and drive off, they’re not going to miss it.” Rock added, though, that he doesn’t participate in that philosophy. “I don’t steal things. I’m rich.”

Really Kid Rock, really? I mean even if he WAS being sarcastic…. you can’t joke about kids stealing music because they will do it regardless of humor. I don’t care how HE makes money but if he says its ok then the artists that DO rely on selling their CDs are going to be hurting. I don’t care about weather or not his music is good or not, it must be nice to have that much money that he doesn’t need to care about the music being sold, from his recent single it seems that its only purpose WAS to make money by taking chords and rifts from other songs but I cant complain I sort of like it. Probably because it DOES remind me of Sweet home Alabama and such. But seriously, don’t encourage kids to steal.
Also I support itunes in their single song tracks because sometimes the entire album is just filler crap that no one wants to hear anyways. Thats how its always been. Artists make one hit wonders and you are stuck with a CD you’ll never listen to except that ONE song. This new system I is forcing musicians to make GOOD music. If the albums not worth buying then you don’t have to, why should you? I still usually buy the CD anyways as a personal decision but I like knowing the choice is there.

I never really paid much attention to Kid Rock’s music until a few months ago. Then out of curiousity I went to his concert. What I found is that besides realy enjoying his music, his performance topped the charts. For me, his performance, energy and attention to his audience outweighed any other concert I’ve been to. And I’ve been to a few from Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, R.E.M, U2, 3 Doors Down, Staind, Pink, etc. All these performers were great but, for me, Kid Rock was the best. I have since purchased all of his music. Some pieces were exploratory and the rest is right on. And to say that he ’steals’, what are you talking about? There are lots of artists who remake other artists music and some do it better than others. But maybe you need to listen to the stuff that isn’t being played - some of those pieces are awesome, but they didn’t get the airtime. With what has been played lately, I hope that we will finally start to hear his original pieces.

Oh, and ditto to ‘Kyle Orton’s Beard’ comment from 6/19/08!!

Jealous | 10/7/2008, 4:15 pm EST

What makes me jealous is that he makes millions and has so little talent. He worked hard to get where he is, but talent? Not a heck of a lot. A poor guitar player, mediocre rapper and horrible singer.

JB | 9/16/2008, 12:56 pm EST

I don’t care if he’s talented or not, rich or not, famous or not, greasy or not, white-trash or not, an “artist” or not. It really doesn’t matter if he’s any of those things… or not. What matters is that his opinion on this entire subject, is stupid. Steal everything!?!?! Yeah- that’s good to know because I was planning on stealing his songs, his money, his motorcycles and a bunch of other things that belong to him. And from what I just read, he should be perfectly okay with me doing that. Only in America.

chris | 9/2/2008, 11:00 pm EST

all of you that think kid rock is a moron are just jelous that he his making millions because he has talent

Brandi Masters | 8/20/2008, 11:32 pm EST

People steal his “music” to listen to it. HE steals other music and repackages it to make money.

cave bot | 8/20/2008, 10:02 pm EST

Kid Rock is a flash in the pan.
His own stupidity will be his undoing in the long run and history will remember him not as a great musical artist, but rather as a business man that carefully put together riffs and cords to make songs that generate the most income, as opposed to artists that put their soul into their work and let the chips fall where they may.

Joe Folk | 7/30/2008, 2:29 pm EST

Steal the music
forget the record labels
forget Apple
Live life

Su | 6/26/2008, 1:20 am EST

I can’t believe people actually take this so serious. The whole point is that you wouldn’t work a 40 hr work week and not expect a check. It’s the same for Kid Rock or any other artist. They work hard for that money. I would love to see you people who have are so narrow minded work for 2 wks for free. Let see how that works out for you. Loosen up. Go steal a beer and relax.

Aaron | 6/23/2008, 12:03 am EST

I think it is sad when Artists try to punish or lip-lash (using sarcasm in Kids case) their fans. You know, this is the year 2008… we were supposed to have flying cars and robot maids. Instead we got iPods and GPS, Internet and Roomba Vacuums. — These artists need to come to grips with the times we live in, the Digital Age. Instead of trying to punish or degrade your fans, or encourage young people to steal (I know he was being sarcastic, still there are some people out there that might not or might think its cool to steal), they need to get their contracts right with the Record Companies. Forget about making money off your albums.. that is for the distribution moguls (iTunes, Atlantic Records, etc) … in this age, the Artist makes money through promotion and performance: Promotions for soft drinks, guitars and musical devices, electronics companies, websites, movies, openings and premiers for new eateries, theaters, stadiums and boutiques, clothing lines, appearances, merchandise, photo shoots, interviews, hosting events, creating music for tv / movies / commercials / companies, reality tv, putting their name and selling almost anything and everything from life insurance to Samsung TVs… AND MOST IMPORTANTLY BY PERFORMING LIVE AT CONCERT!! — Digital music is not going away, its only going to get more popular, especially as it becomes available / affordable in more countries. Holding out only affects the Artist now, not the fan. But stop giving Bullshit excuses. I like Kid Rock, but its pretty insulting to his fans who actually use their brains.

brighteyed | 6/20/2008, 4:20 pm EST

he steals samples to make shit ass music that i have to hear every two hours on satellite radio…NOW THAT SUCKS….turn the station pleaaassseee

JRq | 6/19/2008, 2:44 pm EST

I think it’s awesome that at least a few artists are standing up against ITunes. There has been bootlegs and sharing of music since the invention of the cassette tape and tape recorders. Remember when you were a kid and you taped off the radio? The only difference is now I can copy a complete song without hearing the dj talk over the first 30 seconds of it. And I really wish someone would have the nads to ask Metallica how they can be against sharing music since they only got a record deal by fans bootlegging and sharing their first album ‘No Life Til Leather’.

Barb | 6/19/2008, 1:02 pm EST

Just because you don’t like his music doesn’t mean he’s “white trash”, “moron”, “egotistical”, etc. It just means you have no grasp of the music culture. It’s an art form, do you play in a band, do you make money doing it, do you really know your music? Probably not, most people who bash anyone, including Kid Rock, are either jealous in their own mind, or listen to sappy one hit wonder musicians who can keep creating something that nobody wants to listen to (i.e. Backstreet Boys, Nsync, Brittany Spears).

I listen to everything from heavy metal to Billie Holiday. I don’t like some stuff out there, but I don’t hate on it either. It’s just not my taste. But to crack the whip on someone who is just using their freedom of speech is ludicrous. Step back and take a look at your comments and realize that some people don’t agree with what you’re saying. Same goes for Kid Rock. He’s just making a statement that corporate America is out of control, and America revolves around the dollar.

As for the Oil companies, why are they making record profits? Because some stock joker in Wall Street decides that we need to up the price, all due to them having a ‘feeling’ the market is going south.

Tommy T | 6/19/2008, 12:39 pm EST

Kid Rock is an excellent musician. Do not hate. Which other relatively new artist out there can jam with Skynyrd and Cheryl Crow and Aerosmith and Run DMC and do a hell of a good job at it!– NO ONE!

B-Man | 6/19/2008, 12:10 pm EST

Who the hell is paying for Kid Rock music anyways?

Dude | 6/19/2008, 11:57 am EST

Try stealing a copy of Rolling Stone.

oldpunk | 6/19/2008, 11:26 am EST

ANARCHY NOW - Up with the proletariat!!! Let’s not pay for anything while we are at it. It sounds so good on paper or on a bumper sticker.

Quote of the year: “I don’t steal things. I’m rich.”

That is the most egotistical and corporate elitist thing I’ve ever heard. You know why your rich, because working stiffs like me and millions like me earn our livings in the background of pricks like you and corporate America. We are the ones who lose if people just decide to start ripping one another off.

Jablowme | 6/19/2008, 9:53 am EST

He plays all the studio instruments on his albums- those of you saying he’s not tallented- he can do more than 99% of artists out there. FYI

Todd | 6/19/2008, 8:34 am EST

Kid is right! Artists make money on live shows these days. The engineers and everyone else lose when albums are illegally downloaded, but most of them steal music too.

Kyle Orton's Beard | 6/19/2008, 8:30 am EST

You know, I don’t listen to Kid Rock because I am not into his music. But the music elitists here who often walk around deriding anyone who listens to a popular band as ‘a sell-out’ ought to step back and accept that what Kid Rock is saying here agrees with the premise for their own remarks on music: screw the big companies and take what you can take.

If you can’t see that, take your esoteric music t-shirts, you’re arrogant, self-righteous music fascism and retire to your room. There, you can listen to that ‘band no one knows and doesn’t get the respect they deserve’ in peace without irritating the rest of us.

Uhh.... | 6/19/2008, 6:40 am EST

Kid Rock, you’re an idiot. Tired of being ripped off? Screw the labels, put it on iTunes yourself. You’ll get 30 cents per song sold. Not hard to figure out.

World Peace | 6/19/2008, 2:34 am EST

Kid is just trying to create publicity so he can sell more albums because he’s a terrible musician.

Shakespeare | 6/19/2008, 2:18 am EST

HIS NAME IS KID ROCK! I AGREE 100 PERCENT, THE MUSICANS MAKE $$ OFF OF TOURS, NOT RECORDS ANYMORE!

auramac | 6/19/2008, 2:18 am EST

Sure- “stick it to the man” by stealing any music you like. iTunes is a lot more fair than the record companies- but CD sales are down more than digital sales have increased because people still steal music more than they buy. And Kid Rock wants you to spend more bucks to see him than buy his own crap. What’s wrong with this picture?…

The Intl | 6/19/2008, 1:54 am EST

Why would anyone buy anything on itunes anyway? Haven’t you heard of music blog sites? I burn on the average 10 new CDs every week. I remix ‘em to my liking, and use itunes for nothing more than copying them onto my ipod! Why is this even an issue?

Dudeness | 6/18/2008, 11:15 pm EST

This is coming from a MORON that gets into brawls at the Waffle House. Corporate Trash. Don’t even steal his music…not even worth free.

brock vond | 6/18/2008, 10:59 pm EST

hmmmmmm ….

I agree with Kid Rock. iTunes is a rip off for artists. for every track you download, the artist recieves less than 10 cents …. thats right … 10 cents. Full albums, less than a dollar.

Live music is where most artists make their cash nowdays, but even concert tickets are getting expensive.

Its sad, the the only person making money anymore is “the man”.

Might as well stick it to them …

Turnbo | 6/18/2008, 10:58 pm EST

I would never even think about stealing this joker’s music. Thats when you know music is really bad, when someone won’t even dare to illegally download it. Also, itunes is not an old system you corporate white trash greaseball.

amp | 6/18/2008, 10:28 pm EST

hey, um kid rock: not paying at the pump doesnt hurt oil companies, it hurts the small business owners that make almost no money on the gas. if you are going to keep the analogy going, at least say “go ahead and steal gas as long as you go ahed and buy some cool ranch doritos and red bull from inside the store

auramac | 6/18/2008, 8:21 pm EST

Being “down to earth” does not exclude one from being a moron. And Kid Rock not only sucks as a musician, he is also a moron. Double-digit IQ at most…

Human | 6/18/2008, 7:52 pm EST

Why bash him? Hes down to earth, who do you look up to Ms. Spears? I’d rather my kids enjoy a down to earth guy, then listen to a druggie whore…… He speaks the truth, unlike some others in the business.

album | 6/18/2008, 7:27 pm EST

To be honest for most (not all) artist the majority of the work to create a sucessful album is actually done by people other than the artist. What creates the sales for most mainstream music is combination of expensive studio gear, highly paid producers, big marketing pushes, talented backing musicians, placement on the hottest WB shows, ect…Yet artists like Kid Rock continue to feel offended that studios and sales outlets continue to get the bulk of record sales monies. Trust me Kid, the number of currently starving musicians in the world with more talent then you is much greater then you think. You are a creation of the studio system so forgive us if we take your comments on studio profits with a grain of salt.

Moneyshot | 6/18/2008, 7:24 pm EST

What did this guy do to make himself “famous” apart for being the poster boy for white trash, really ? his music if you can call it that is rubbish, he banged Pammie but so has most of the population with greasy hair and tattoos.
So much good music out not being reported were this muppet gets more than his fair share.

rocco | 6/18/2008, 7:06 pm EST

Why even print such stupidity? Come on RS, you can do better than this.

Music Guy | 6/18/2008, 6:16 pm EST

Kid Rock is a moron. A rich moron, but a moron nonetheless.
