George Michael Feels the “Freedom” at First U.S. Tour Opener in 17 Years

6/18/08, 2:09 pm EST

George Michael began his first North American tour in 17 years on Tuesday at the San Diego Sports Arena, standing onstage just as we last saw him: stylishly unshaven, in black suit and shades, swaying his hips while singing to ecstatic fans (from 1996’s “Fastlove”), “Got to get up to get down!”

The show was heavy with anxious, funky riffs and smoove R&B pop, and without special effects beyond a trio of massive, curving video screens that unfolded across the stage like a tongue toward his crowd. They sparkled with cascading blue-and-red stars for the opening acoustic guitar riff and Michael wailing: “So here I am!” from “Waiting (Reprise).” For the next two hours (plus a 20-minute intermission), Michael performed hits and new songs from his just-released retrospective album, Twenty-Five.

Among the new songs was “Feeling Good,” which began as a soulful a cappella lament before shifting into a brassy rumble as the big screens behind him filled up with images of Dita Von Tease stripping down to her glittery pasties as she stepped into a giant champagne glass. Most fans were on their feet the entire concert, and Michael thanked those “people whose knowledge of me doesn’t end with ‘Faith.’ You are the people I’m playing for.” (For everyone else, “Faith” baby-tees were on sale for $40 in the lobby.)

His current 25 LIVE Tour across the U.S. follows 80 shows across Europe. His band could be seen stacked on three levels of scaffolding between the video screens, all dressed in elegant black. On either side of the stage, Michael had matching sets of backup singers: each one with a bald dude, a thin woman singer and one zaftig shouter, all singing harmonies drenched in gospel and modern soul, everyone in balance. It was feng shui live. And all of them stood behind him during “Father Figure,” singing and snapping their fingers to the heartbreak beat.

The British singer seemed especially happy to be back in California. “I saw a couple of ladies getting married on TV yesterday,” he said, referring to the first day of the state granting legal marriages to gays and lesbians. “It’s about fucking time.”

Michael sang of golddiggers on “Everything She Wants,” and turned dreamy and romantic on “A Different Corner.” He showed old video footage during Wham!’s excited “I’m Your Man” and slowed down for a jazzy take on “Roxanne” by the Police. He was most animated at the very end, as he closed with the still-stirring “Freedom,” his hands raised high, testifying like an evangelist for self-determination. Then he was on his knees, giving the “I’m not worthy” bow several times towards his fans. His crowd roared back, still dancing to the music, suggesting that maybe he was.

Truly a great concert – the energy was as high and the music was great. The only negative I would have would be the venue – it has awful acoustics and the sound reverberated a lot for the first half of the show. Why artist still play at the Sports Arena is beyond me – maybe they have never sat in the audience to actual try and listen to a show. Other than that no regrets – might even try and catch him in LA :)

What a great concert! The excitement was through the roof. George sang better than ever. For the true fans(like me) whom have stuck with him, hearing him sing all those great songs and not just his hits was pure bliss. Way to go! My only regret was not sitting closer to the stage and not having heard him sing “Praying for Time.”

saw him in Dublin three times – just amazing!

What an incredible concert!! I was blown away by the pure enthusiasm of the crown. I was so happy to see this concert after waiting so long for it to happen. I sat in the first row, and it was like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. Fantastic!!

Great concert- lots of fun – on our feet practically the whole time. His voice is true and he gave it his all. I am not crazy about the venue – Sports Arena and agree with one about the acoustics. But I thought he did a great job -

I liked him in wammo. He rocks, just like us cool fans. I love you all.

George Michael is truly a guilty pleasure. I’m a little embarrassed to admit it, but I really enjoy his concerts. An awesome two hours.

AMAZING show!! George rocked San Diego!
Does anyone have the set list from the show last night?

Truly an amazing concert! My only complaint is that I was not in the front row!

can’t wait for the MSG shows! this tour is long overdue

This is my third concert of George Michael and he did not disappoint. I saw him in Paris in 2006 and the difference in setlist and visuals is striking — both shows were excellent, but being an American, I did really appreciate the more retrospective feel of the show and the revamped visuals. It was an amazing experience and i can’t wait to see him again in Chicago this July. FOR THIS STILL SITTING ON THE FENCE, GO SEE THIS CONCERT WHILE YOU CAN.

Saw him at the HP in San Jose last night and, even though I’m by no means the world’s biggest GM fan, it was an awesome show. The guy knows how to bring it and the crowd was going nuts for most of the two-part set. Definitely go if you get the chance.

This show was amazing. George proved why he has endured for so many years – he is a fantastic showman. His voice sounded incredible, it was great set list, which had the crowd dancing and involed the entire time. This concert is so much fun. If you get the chance to see this show go – you won’t be disappointed.

Wow…It was like a giant party with everyone dancing & singing. Ive seen him about 4 other times and hes is as good as ever! Sexy, humble, gracious and seems to have gotten better with time! Go see him if you can!

On Tuesday morning my wife Adriana and myself flew from Mexico City to San Diego to enjoy one of the best performances in our lives with a George Michael in the best moment of his life. He’s also a great dancer. We got two seats in front of the stage but far enough to enjoy from a perspective the light show behind him crowned by the helicopter which was absurdly great. We were touched by the several-minutes standing ovation and George’s expressions of gratitude on this knees.

I saw George in concert back in November at Earl’s Court (London) and it was the concert of a lifetime. I was one meager San Diegan amongst a throng of George’s countrymen and I enjoyed him as much as everyone else that glorious Thursday night. I regret not being back in SD to see him kick off his North America tour but am so happy to know how well he was received. Love you George from the American in Middlesex.

Wow! It’s nice to hear positive comments about the shows. Im living in the Midwest where not many people around these parts are to intrested in his music. But I am!! I will be at the Chicago show in July.

Noviana | 6/23/2008, 12:23 pm EST

Still in cloud nine from the Vegas concert last Saturday. A truly magnificent artist. Cutting-edge technology show and pure professional production, the perfect way to deliver those wonderful music and lyrics (great sound engineering). It all comes down to….”What a voice!” Thank you George for a great 25 years!
PS: A beautiful and gracious man in person as well(thanks for the kiss, George!).

Marsay | 6/27/2008, 12:32 pm EST

I am so glad to read the positive comments! I have tickets to the Seattle show on July 2 and I am SOOOOO excited! Having been a fan for over 20 years and having never seen a concert, this truly is a dream come true.

I’m a Brit but was lucky enough to catch him in San Diego. It was so magical to hear him sing live for the first time. Great showman, as I knew he would be. Will remember my night in San Diego for the rest of my life.

rosscoe | 7/11/2008, 7:42 pm EST

Saw the show in Chicago on the 9th — the best concert I’ve been to in a long, long time. GM was in perfect voice, clearly enjoying himself and the audience was clearly enjoying him. And the “Freedom” finale? Man… that is a moment I will remember the rest of my life. Rousing, joyous… I still get chills thinking about it!

Brittany | 7/14/2008, 5:15 pm EST

I still can’t stop thinking about how amazing the Vegas show was. At 21, I wasn’t able to around for much of George’s heyday back in the 80s, but it honestly didn’t matter. I’ve been a fan for a long time, due mostly in part to my mom being such a big fan. It didn’t matter that I didn’t know all of the words or even all of the songs that he sang at the concert – it was PHENOMENAL! The best part was that after 25 years in the business he has the understanding to know that what his fans want is just him singing. There wasn’t a lot of flashy production or bells or whistles…many of the songs it just started with him singing without any music at all. It was great – probably the best concert I’ve ever been to!

Illydiva | 7/27/2008, 10:55 am EST

Saw the show in Philly last night. Awesome!! I would’ve liked to hear more of his Wham stuff (if only a medley), but that is my lone complaint. George did not disappoint. He is as sexy, cocky and irreverant as ever and what an amazing voice….still!
