Plant & Krauss Cap Bonnaroo With Rootsy Set of Duets, Led Zep Tune

6/16/08, 8:45 am EST

While most folks left Bonnaroo on Sunday, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss drew one of the festival’s biggest audiences for a high-energy set that included mateiral from their debut collaboration Raising Sand. Plant kicked things off sans Krauss, running through tunes like “Rich Woman” with his backing band, which featured roots-rock legend T Bone Burnett. Plant also treated Zep fans to a rip-roaring rendition of the classic “Black Dog,” shrieking and tossing his microphone in the air. Once Krauss joined him onstage, things got progressively more country-fied, with Krauss adding masterful fiddle lines to eerie tunes like “Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us.” The crowd was delighted, as was Plant. “Welcome to our little world,” he said. “It’s a great pleasure to bring this gift. It’s been a wonderful time for you and me.”

I left early too.. I was hoping Plant was going to jump on stage with at least one other band during the festival. Not the case!

this the best calloboration. Really rich and full of soul. Jimmy Page should move on as well. I admire Plant for knowing that this something great and stick to his guns. There was no act worthy enough for him to jump onstage with so good thing he did not–it would’ve cheap and pointless. keep it genuine

Shrieking? Heavy and rip-roaring? Were you at the show? It was toned-down and mellow…Plant held back and it fit in with the rest of the songs from the duo. Next time, pay attention.

I totally agree the eerie tone of alison’s voice and fiddle captivated the crowd and truly held her own with the genius, robert plant

Jeff- were YOU at the show?? Robert plant may have toned down his voice for a couple slow ballady songs but he ripped it…black dog exhibited his ability to still get the crowd up and showed off his insane vocals…it was mellow yes no one said it was hard but it was definitely a combo of rock and roll and country so next time YOU pay attention jeff

That show really took my breath away. Loved their duet. Given how much you liked their show Jaffe, what was your highlight? Love to hear it from a veteran.

For me, the Plant-Krauss set took the cake for the entire festival. Their best moments combined roots, BG, and blues with all of the melodrama of a Twin Peaks episode. Its four days since the show and I can still hear echoes of “Black Dog”.

I agree with Jeff – What show were you at????

Yes Black Dog was certainly one highlight of the show. But “rip-roaring” and “shrieking”, it was NOT. In fact, it was Plant’s restraint, (especially knowing what he’s capable of), that fueled my burning desire. Like RooRoo it’s still echoing in my head. I tried to quench my yearning for BlackDog this afternoon by pulling out LedZepIV but, alas, it no longer satisfies.

Robert/Alison,
Please tell me you will be releasing another album, a live one perchance, including BlackDog! :>)

I do have to say that the Plant-Krauss show was in my opinion, the highlight of Bonnaroo. Saw alot of great bands and artist’s, but this show WAS the Best…..
