Pete Wentz’s “FNMTV” Premieres With Snoop Dogg, Awkwardness

6/16/08, 4:40 pm EST

In an attempt to revive the music video, Pete Wentz has created FNMTV, a bizarre combination of the VMAs, TRL and sadly deceased Making the Video that features the premieres of new clips. Friday night’s debut seemed like more of a celebration of awkwardness than the art of lip synching and cheesy acting, though.

Exhibit A: Wentz’s repeated references to his wife and (impending) kid lead Snoop to suck on a plastic nipple; the audience disses Snoop’s video … while he’s still standing there being interviewed.

Exhibit B: Strange, seizure-inducing lights herald each premiere; the crowd deems blink-182 more important than the Who; Wentz makes the painful mistake of going off-script to interview the Ting-Tings.

he blows and so does his show.

I think the show is awesome.
Pete has done some wonderful things and this is something fun that he enjoys doing and everyone who disagrees should just leave him alone. He’s a great guy just trying to make a living in this world. I have to say that Pete is awesome and he should keep his head held high. Keep up the great work!

Seriously. WTF is wrong with America when the BASSIST of what is essentially a boy band can get away with putting together a show like this? The guy has the easiest job in a “rock” band that plays some of the most poppy, nontechnical drivel and has somehow convinced the world that he is a talented, smart, and important individual. Learning how to play bass is as hard as wiping your ass.

I really think this review was unfair. The show was exciting and fun. I love Pete Wentz, he’s sweet and vulnerable but still amazingly cool. It’s great he’s happy to be a husband and expectant dad, which are values that too much of America has lost.

Pete Wentz is falling victim to the presumption that he can get away with anything. Hell, he probably can. It’s true that this show was a fucking terrible idea, but people eat terrible ideas up. I love that the idea behind this show is that people will watch it because it’s hosted by someone with inherent, undisputed credibility… and why? I have no idea. People call this guy a mogul, but he’s just another self absorbed shill who never tires of his own image or genius.

I’ve posted this thought before. If you are a musice network who wants to play music videos and live performances, just play them. You don’t need a special show to do that. That why this show was destined to bomb before it aired.

I agree with Jeremy, this show could be really good, but only if they get rid of the audience. However, the idea of having people rate the videos online is a good one, but with blink182 scoring higher than The Who, it makes one wonder if only teenybops were watching. The audience skewed the whole show in a really weird, non-music direction. Keep the show, though; just change it.

Blink 182? Who?

Mario Sadler | 6/17/2008, 2:33 am EST

honestly, it was the premiere of the show. im pretty sure it’ll get better as it goes on. don’t be let down by the first airing of the show and let all hopes down about it. it’s got potential.

Truth, did you actually watch the show? Because the Northern Downpour performance was not even shown on air. It was not what I was expecting, but if it continues to develop then I think the show could work.

Truth | 6/16/2008, 11:59 pm EST

Pete wentz forgot to read his lines cause he was too busy inventing eyeliner for babies. The guy is such a tool and the show fucking sucked. At least panic played northern downpour a ACTUAL good song by them.

it was really rough around the edges, the crowd (mainly pre-teen adolescent girls hollering for pete every 5 minutes) is really annoying. i got to hand it to pete for trying but so far this show is a bust.

i think the show would be better if you take out the entire audience, and just have pete with the artists and maybe keep the skybox stuff.

i couldnt watch more than 5 minutes, it was TERRIBLE. he couldnt even read off his script properly.
jesus

I caught a repeat showing of the program today. Leave it to MTV to royally mess up a simple concept of showing music videos and live performances.

Lisa | 6/16/2008, 6:44 pm EST

It doesn’t matter what he gets his hands on, it’s all shit in the end and this show is no exception. It was a never ending hour of boredom having me thank god I Tivo-ed it so I could watch it all in a still painful 10 minutes. Please, for everyone’s sake, cancel this sad excuse of a show attempting to “bring back” music videos on MTV.

TZA | 6/16/2008, 5:17 pm EST

Pete, sweetie, I love you, but dump the tart and try to wow us next week with something better.
