Iron Maiden Go “Back in Time” in NYC: A Full Report, By the Numbers

6/16/08, 1:38 pm EST

Relying exclusively on 20-year-old tunes would typically be the sign of a band throwing in the towel, but Iron Maiden’s Somewhere Back in Time tour is more like a band chewing up its own history and spitting it out for two solid hours. As a sort of make-up for the last tour, when the band played its latest slow jamz-laden album, A Matter of Life and Death, in its entirety, last night’s show at New York’s Madison Square Garden was all Eighties, all the time (fine, one song from 1992). The band sprinted out like a bunch of teenagers to open with a searing “Aces High,” and frontman/band pilot Bruce Dickinson nailed every note with his storied air raid siren voice sounding no worse for the wear. Below, a scientific statistical roundup of the evening’s festivities:

“Scream for me, New York City” entreaties: 13
Cheapest T-shirt: $35
Percentage of the audience ignoring the PCU “don’t be that guy” rule and wearing an Iron Maiden shirt: >30%
Band members also breaking the rule: 2
Onstage soccer games during technical delays: 1
Combined ages of band members: 310
Appearances by Eddie, the band’s 20-foot-tall zombie/mummy/cyborg mascot: 2
Instances of Spinal Tap-style gunning down of the audience with guitars: 3
Minimum amount of minutes Bruce Dickinson spent talking: 15
Better closing songs besides “Hallowed Be Thy Name”: 0
The number of the beast: 666

56.000 people in Gothenburg can’t be wrong :) Been a fan since 82 and damn, this show has more energy than anyone I saw back in the 80’s…

Brought my eldest dagughter (14) with me to teach her that theres more to music than rap (she loved it!) and next time I take the rest of the family as well!!!

UP THE IRONS!

Finn Maiden | 7/20/2008, 2:52 pm EST

Maiden was here in Finland. F****ing great. 45000 people was screaming. Awesome. One of greatest band in world’s history - now and ever.

RichardK | 7/7/2008, 8:43 am EST

Maiden…please come to SOUTH AFRICA!

charlottetheharlot | 7/5/2008, 5:10 pm EST

The MSG show was so kick ass, Hammerstein was a lot of fun the last few tours, as its so small and the band really feels like they’re right on top of you. MSG however is a whole different energy. Transylvania opening sounded great. The greatest band on earth. Up em baby….way up

deathbymoshpit666 | 7/4/2008, 11:40 pm EST

saw them for the first time in my life in concord, and I can honestly say that I will never miss another maiden show, no matter what it takes. the sheer, almost inhuman flawlessness of the band’s playing and the fact that bruce hit every note left me in awe. the best song of the set was no doubt fear of the dark; the connection between the band and the couple thousand people in the audience singing along made it a larger-than-life experience, a true example of the immortality of maiden’s music. it’s a feeling that I won’t forget in the many years to come, if ever.

Mike & Traci | 7/3/2008, 3:58 pm EST

We traveled from Greenville, SC to Houston, TX to see them and were so impressed we bought tickets for MSG in New York. My only regret is not going to the show in New Jersey. I’ve been a fan sense 1983 and this was the first time I have ever seen them live. I will never miss another tour even if I have to travel to Europe.

Lucio | 7/1/2008, 6:01 am EST

Thanks Maiden.
Italy - Gods of Metal,June 27 2008

AMAZING!

Cheers from Italy

Michael D | 6/30/2008, 10:42 am EST

I paid too much for my tickets and LOVE EVERY minute of the San Antonio show!!! Fan since 82′ and it never fails to get better…sure is great to see Maiden live and better sounding than ever!!!! The hair on the back of my neck stood up for the whole show…..WOW
UP THE IRONS!!!!

It was amazing - twice! | 6/26/2008, 1:44 am EST

I had moderate expectations for the Concord, CA gig and Maiden blew me away. It was like being a young teenager all over again!!! The guy bemoaning the absence of a Bay Area gig should have headed to the East Bay!
I had to do it again and I was in the pit area for the Madison Square Garden gig. I had not been there for a Maiden gig since 7th Son…

Thanks Maiden, this tour was an awesome treat. My first time was at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, many, many years ago.

jim | 6/21/2008, 9:32 pm EST

i saw maiden at pnc as well as camden..let me say i been a maiden fan since 82..these were the best 2 concerts i ever saw seeing maiden 4 times now and flying from florida to jersey was well worth it..next tour as bruce said at pnc will be backed by a new maiden album..i will fly up again if that what it takes..these guys are truly a class a act..up the irons…

SanFranciscoFan | 6/21/2008, 12:09 am EST

Why in the world cant we get some maiden in the bay area… Iron Maiden - you have SO MANY fans here!!!!

Ed the Head | 6/20/2008, 10:13 pm EST

I have been a fan of Iron Maiden for over 20 years ( and none of them have been wasted years). I saw them in Toronto and at MSG. I took my 6 year old and 14 year old girls to the MSG show. My 6 year old was headbanging and she loved the show. My 14 year old (though she isn’t much into Maiden) also enjoyed the show and even bought a shirt. As true entertainers Iron Maiden entertained the crowd during the sound mishap. Even without sound Iron Maiden kicks ass. Even after the show, Nicko came out of MSG looking for his ride (upset it wasn’t there) he still stop and said aye mate when I said hi to him.
Up the Irons

the trooper | 6/20/2008, 6:15 pm EST

Come to Minneapolis/St Paul…PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!

Mid Life Crisis | 6/20/2008, 1:12 pm EST

Went to the show at MSG and I was absolutely amazed!! What a show, 2 hours of high energy. It was the first time I ever saw them and hopefully it won’t be the last. I saw Heaven and Hell twice this past year and I thought nothing could top them, but now I am not too sure. And yes at age 44 I bought a t-shirt!

bigger-than-elvis | 6/20/2008, 6:27 am EST

being a maideneer for the past 24 odd years, this time i’ll take my dad to the assen-gig in holland, summin diff’rent innit?? seeing the reviews here he’ll go in 63 years old and he’ll come out 63 years young… daddy, scream for me!!!

Paul Kocabay | 6/18/2008, 5:24 pm EST

Saw them at MSG on last sunday and I really hope they repeat this tour again. Like an idiot I missed the beginning of the show assuming that they would start @ 9 PM

frzell | 6/18/2008, 1:39 pm EST

Saw them last night in Camden NJ. The third time in my life, though the first time since 1985. Just an incredible show, only tech problem was they couldn’t shut the flood lights off the stage before the encore, and Bruce just was hysterical handling the situation with great humor, just hit CTRL+ALT+DEL!

Also took my two sons age 13 and 12, they were in awe.

Thanks to a band who knows how to please people who plunk down money to see them.

Dougster | 6/18/2008, 1:17 pm EST

having got time off for NJ and NY late Wed. Booked flights/hotel/tckts(from IM fans. The NJ gig was out of this world(thunder storm too)IM were having a blast. NY, never heard NY crowd so loud before, best songs over the week-end(NJ-Iron Maiden;NY-Rime of the ancient Mariner never heard this so good)
Overall £1,500(in total) well spent

Eddie's Lil' Bro | 6/18/2008, 12:17 am EST

Saw them in 1986 and just saw them again Thursday at Blossom Music Center in Ohio and it was as enjoyable as ever! They might never make it, but I personally believe they are Rock Hall-worthy.

MAIDEN! | 6/17/2008, 11:47 pm EST

Saw them here in Australia! Went twice and hanging for them to hit our shores again!

Maiden-Kansas | 6/17/2008, 10:28 pm EST

Wow. The person responsible for this article is as profoundly complete an imbecile as I have ever read. He knows nothing about music, Maiden, or writing. Any time I see words mispelled on purpose, I feel sick to my stomach. Many metal fans are rather well educated and should be offended by this tripe. Does this person realize who inspired “Spinal Tap.” Adrian Smith is always referencing that movie when interviewed and holding one of his Les Pauls. Again, wow. Anyone who is questioning a the experience that is a Maiden show, please don’t use this fodder as suggestion. Yikes!

Adam Lewis | 6/17/2008, 9:13 pm EST

The Greatest Show on Earth!!!!!I’m in show business and do about 250 shows a year in / out of Manhattan.
I’ve been a MAIDEN fan since ‘83 and no one can hold a candle to these guys . A true class act. I love them for all their hard work and money they put right back into their performances. THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH !!!!!

Katie LiNY | 6/17/2008, 4:57 pm EST

OMGGGG BEST SHOW EVER! had the most awesome time and the band really had a good sense of humor, kept their cool, and really pulled off keeping the crowd happy during the sound loss delay (we couldnt be mad at them even if we wanted to)lol anyways rating the show from a scale of 1-10 i give it a 666!!!

Katie L | 6/17/2008, 4:52 pm EST

OMGGGG BEST SHOW EVER!

MaidenFanatic | 6/17/2008, 12:32 pm EST

I saw them at the Garden. WHAT A SHOW!! I still don’t understand how one band can be so damn AMAZING!! If I could I would go to every single concert they play in a heartbeat.

UP THE IRONSS!!

maidenobsessed | 6/17/2008, 10:49 am EST

OMG!.
totally random comment i know.
But i cant wait for the 5th of July.
Maiden are playing in London.
And omg i cant wait
17 days :P
SO EXCITED =P
UP THE IRONS!!

From Rachhh (:

Scott | 6/17/2008, 10:29 am EST

Saw them at the Art Center the night before and at the Garden - both shows were fantastic. Too bad the dickhead that wrote this review was listening to a Weezer CD on his iPod instead of enjoying the greatest metal band ever. What a tool.

Wrathchild | 6/17/2008, 10:17 am EST

I saw them 3 times this tour — Los Angeles twice (Forum and Irvine Meadows) as well as PNC.

Every show delievered — yes, even seeing the same show 3 times, I would go back again for more!

They put more energy in their show than anyone else out there. My favorite part is having their FANS come onstage to “help them out” with the chorus on one of the songs!

Almost no other band would do this even once…let alone every night on the tour!

Up the Irons!

stuntborg | 6/17/2008, 9:33 am EST

A triumph. Truly grand opera for our times. The lads handled the 10 minute delay very well, clowning around and booting around a football on stage.

Maiden4Life | 6/17/2008, 7:39 am EST

Saw Maiden this year in Toronto and they are at the top of there game. The best live metal band in the world and don’t you forget that!

UP THE IRONS!!!!!!!

Silly Cornelius | 6/17/2008, 7:32 am EST

I have seen many, many bands perform live in venues big and small over the last 20 years of my life (U2, Pearl Jam, Bjork, Pink Floyd, The Decemberists, Metallica, Van Halen, My Morning Jacket, Tool, Ben Harper, Hot Lava Monster, Slayer, Phish, etc).

There is no better live band than Iron Maiden. My wife and I will see them on every tour they do until they call it quits. Always money well spent and always an absolute pleasure to see these guys work their magic.

Wow | 6/16/2008, 11:54 pm EST

Actually, it’s not where the picture was taken, but Bruce was wearing the same pants, and the roofline looked the same (sort of). However, the championship banners kind of give the garden away.

My bad.

Wow | 6/16/2008, 11:51 pm EST

Saw maiden for the first time in Blossom (near Cleveland, OH), which is also where the picture was taken… unbelievable. Totally blown away, stagecraft on par with U2 and the musicianship was incredible. Lots of the Guitar Hero generation was there as well, and plenty of fathers and sons. I highly recommend shelling out the bucks for these guys, they reminded me of just how good a show can be.

AngelMaiden | 6/16/2008, 10:08 pm EST

I was there and they kicked major ass!!! Iron Maiden is the best live show and you RS must recognize that. They simply rule and after 25 years are playing better than ever. Every Maiden fan knows that. UP THE IRONS!!!

WalkinDude | 6/16/2008, 9:14 pm EST

Well, after reading this short article, I’m looking forward to the show this Friday up here in Mansfield, MA. Maiden Rules!!

Rooney | 6/16/2008, 6:28 pm EST

Iron Maiden were ON at MSG. Regarding the Maiden shirts in the crowd, I don’t think any band has ever sold more t-shirts than Maiden. Forget all the shirts sold last night…I saw people wearing 2 or 3 old concert shirts as a way to prove how old school they were.

b. breeg | 6/16/2008, 6:06 pm EST

Nice article. I went and saw the Mighty Maiden in Seattle and it was the best show I’ve seen in years. They have more energy than any band out there and sound AMAZING. Not to mention the sold out crowd ranging from 15-70 years old. Maiden is the best metal band ever and still the best show in metal.

TC | 6/16/2008, 5:33 pm EST

I only went to see the soccer game.

Swingline | 6/16/2008, 5:08 pm EST

I know it’s too early in the week to be hallucinating, but did RS pull another comment?
I just said I saw them with Anthrax in Irvine and loved it, que es esto?
If you’re gonna get that critical, tell “Mr. Slow Jamz Laden” that wrote this article to write a review next time instead of a ripping off a Mastercard commercial. This concert was far more interesting than this guy quoting his favorite line from PCU.

amazed | 6/16/2008, 4:41 pm EST

saw Iron Maiden in Concord, CA. hadn’t seen them since 1990 when the old school metal years ended. I walked into the show 41 years old and walked out 41 years young! The band easily showed the kids at the show how it’s really done, with true talent. Any young metal guitarist at the show must have walked out thinking ‘how can a band play that tight’. Maiden is playing bigger shows now then they did almost 20 years ago. More power to them!

mr roboto | 6/16/2008, 2:16 pm EST

Put them in the iron maiden

Iron Maiden? Excellent!
