Pearl Jam Showcase Rarities, Politics, Dylan and Who Covers at Bonnaroo

6/15/08, 1:05 pm EST

While most bands used Bonnaroo as a platform to play hits, Pearl Jam used their Saturday night closing set to unleash some rarities. Around 10:15 p.m., the band strolled onto the stage and kicked off with “Hard to Imagine,” a gorgeous ballad that the band has only played a few dozen times since 1992. Later on, they turned out jams like “W.M.A,” and monster covers of the Who’s “Love Reign O’er Me” and Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower.”

Vedder — who earlier had joined Jack Johnson on a duet of the beach bum’s jam “Constellations” — got political at points during Pearl Jam’s set. Before the band performed “Gone,” Vedder spoke critically about the conspicuous rise in gas prices since George Bush took over the White House. And later, he urged the crowd to get out and vote (presumably for Barack Obama) in the November election. “A song cannot change the world,” he declared. “But this many people can change the world. How do we know? It is stitched into the fabric of our flag and it is welded into our constitution that we have the right and the responsibility to make change.” Of course, portions of the crowd were upset by Vedder’s proclamations — Bonnaroo, after all, is located in Tennessee, the heart of Bush Country. One dude even shouted, “You’re a dipshit,” before storming off the grounds.

But Vedder’s political statements didn’t get in the way of their awesome set, which also featured tunes like “Black,” “Why Go,” “Even Flow” and “Corduroy.” During a cover of Victoria Williams’ haunting ballad “Crazy Mary” — which includes the lyrics “Take a bottle/ drink it down/ pass it around” — Vedder hopped off the stage to share his bottle of red wine with kids in the front row. The highlight of the band’s set was “Betterman,” during which the crowd ignited lighters and shouted along to the words, drowning out the band. Vedder seemed visibly touched by the sight, saying, “That’s fucking beautiful, man!”

Motley Crue sucks monkey balls. they were no talent assclowns when they were in their prime, now they’re just pathetic.

if you were only there | 6/20/2008, 2:09 am EST

all of you guys are blowing this WAY the heck out of proportion! you have no fricken clue what this festival is about and what it stands for! almost every performer there used there set as a politcal stage.. did you hear chris rock?!?! this is byfar the most liberal event i have EVER been to! there may have been one person in the whole crowd who called him a dipshit… but you look at the other 50,000 people that were in that crowd… they were cheering and calling bush a dipshit…. dont bash someone for having an opinion and saying it on stage… and deffinately dont make the people at bonnaroo sound like a bunch of conservatives because that is far from what they are… if pearl jam can use it to their advantage… let them!! if you think its wrong… start a fucking band, go onstage, say your bush bullshit and you tell me how many people stay and watch your set without walking away calling you a dipshit…

BushLeaguer | 6/19/2008, 8:07 pm EST

First off, his comments werent so bad, so stop your bitching. If you dont agree, fine, but dont cry about it like little girls neither, the next song is only a few songs away, light a frickin joint or something. Is it so wrong for a person to use their popularity as a platform to do what they think is right? If I were a celebrity who had audiences of thousands of people, I would hope that I too, would try to express my concerns over the shape of things today. He didnt go overboard, just a few comments here and there that took the backseat to the awesome set that blew Bonnaroo away this year. Cant say I’ll be back next year, for the people at this festival are quite ignorant, every moron wanders around wearing fucking tiedye shirts yelling “Bonnaroo!” to which the other apes reply the same. Stop taking drugs, and get a fucking job….oh, and leave Eddie Vedder alone, he didnt do anything to you, exept rock your dreadlocked dingleberries!

next time you dont agree with something, be an adult and walk away, dont cry, dont bitch, just head back to your tent light a joint , eat your granola and go to sleep

Jess | 6/19/2008, 2:55 pm EST

Vedder is the man!! I don’t think it would of mattered what the hell he said on stage, if he said my mom was fat, I probably would’ve agreed and kept on dancing! That was the first time I’ve seen pearl jam live and it was well worth the wait. And I agree with Eddie, the crowd’s reaction to betterman was fuckin awesome!!!
Birdscrue-your a sheep, just like all other good lil bushies!

i miss eddie vedder | 6/19/2008, 8:50 am EST

wow.. it is so funny to me how one person’s opinion can upset this many people. eddie was only trying to start a fire in us. it is important that we get together and change the way the world is.. no matter what side you agree with. for all you bushies out there.. i am happy to say that you can’t be so naive to think that some of our nations problems are not his fault. don’t be in denial… eddie is just sick of the way things are right now and it is ok for him to talk about it.. he spoke for like 2 sec. compared to the rest of the concert… i am very much a liberal and believe that what eddie did is right… when else are there that many people in one place at one time? the wall that you put up when people speak about their political opinion is just the problem that we have in the country… there are not enough open mined people to just listen to another person and not get upset.. eddie is a rock god and he put on one of the most amazing shows at bonnaroo and that i have ever seen.. let the man speak, really it’s ok! I LOVE YOU EDDIE!!!!

Stevo | 6/19/2008, 7:22 am EST

Pearl Jam are the greatest rock band of all time.

vedder for president, angelina jolie vice pres.bono the UN secretary. The world will be at peace…..

ticklemynausea | 6/18/2008, 4:56 pm EST

I’ve loved Pearl Jam since the first time I’ve heard Eddie’s voice. I may not always share his view of the world but I do respect his opinion enough not to get up and leave during a show or to try and boo him off the stage. He does have one very good point though, it’s up to us to shape tomorrow. So, stop whining about what you think is right or wrong and go out there and do something about it!

conor | 6/18/2008, 1:57 pm EST

i was about 10 people back from the stage in the center of the pit, this was by far one of the best shows ive ever seen!

jamily | 6/18/2008, 11:55 am EST

i have to agree with the folks who say that you know what you are getting with pj… maybe some people who are in the dark don’t know… but 99% of rock fans know they are a liberal band… and they are open about their opinions… it’s just the way they operate… if you disagree and are able to stomach some of the between song banter… you will be in for the best live act still touring on stage… if not… you will walk away and salvage your pride… either way… you shouldn’t blame pj because their opinions and habits would give you no reason to expect a show completely devoid of politics

hide in hiding | 6/18/2008, 2:43 am EST

pearl jam perlu dijadikan contoh teladan untuk semua generasi akan datang!!! teruskan usaha murnimu, PJ

Rockstar70 | 6/17/2008, 3:20 pm EST

Maybe Eddie Vedder can become a Corn farmer to offset the high vegetable prices!!!

Rockstar70 | 6/17/2008, 3:19 pm EST

John Q | 6/17/2008, 2:12 pm EST

Looks like they edited and deleted some of my comment earlier.

My cousin covers Pearl Jam I said and he is one of the singers up to be the new lead singer of Velvet Revolver. He has some epic vocal cords check him out for yourself

go to you tube and search for : Brian Phyll Miller

Get some support behind this guy so he can add an amazing chapter to Rock and Roll history.

birdscrue | 6/17/2008, 2:02 pm EST

Anyone who think’s Bush is the reason for high gas prices, needs an education, it’s called supply and demand in a global economy. And by the way, you could to be profiting from high gas prices if you had INVESTED in oil companies. And not just Bitch!
Eddie shut up and sing, then go get an education!

teachermamma | 6/17/2008, 12:49 pm EST

What’s up with you guys? Where’s the love? We don’t need to be wishin someone we don’t agree with would kill himself. It’s alright to have your own opinion. I live in TN, am a liberal, but listen to Bill O’Reilley, Dave Ramsey and Phil Valentine on talk radio just to be in the know about the conservative side. I don’t hate the other side. If you must, kill them with kindness, they may hear you.

Moonie | 6/17/2008, 12:16 pm EST

Hey Hoss, I don’t care about your political affiliation, and I care even less about Eddie’s. Yes the world is in a troubled state, but that is why one goes to a concert,to get away from everything. I don’t care who is on stage, just do your job and entertain. If I want to go to a political rally I will. Eddie needs to relax!

Chester Copperpot | 6/16/2008, 11:42 pm EST

Calling Tennessee the “heart of Bush country” is ignorant.

roo attendee | 6/16/2008, 11:17 pm EST

pearl jam rocked and eddies comments about gas prices. when was the last time he bought gas too get too work? How much has gas prices risen since Pelosi- Reid took control of congress?

Rockstar70 | 6/16/2008, 11:08 pm EST

Just because I don’t want to hear Eddie Vedder cry about what he thinks is wrong with the world doesn’t mean I have my “head up my ass”. I’m just sick of his soapbox semons when I come to hear music.
Believe me Mr. Vedder is not hurting or wanting for anything in this world. Pearl Jam crapped on all the fans by refusing to tour extensively because of Ticketmaster a few years back. And what did they change……NOTHING! Eddie has a voice just like all of us and he should use it where we all will in November at the voting booth until then don’t give us politics when we want Music!!

roo attendee | 6/16/2008, 11:06 pm EST

P.J. rocked, as far as eddies comment on gas prices- How much has gas gone up since Pelosi-Reid took over congress? We are ibn this mess because of the legislative branch, not the excutive branch.

PJ LOVER | 6/16/2008, 8:26 pm EST

Let’s get this straight…. Bonnaroo was not just a Pearl Jam concert, so there was quite a range of musical tastes, and attitude’s towards music and musicians in attendance, so naturally not everyone is going to agree with Ed. And, like Ed, everyone who has posted here has a right to their opinion and to voice it using any means neccesary. He just happens to be a very influential person who has a huge forum, and has earned every urge to speak out about what he knows. And he makes sure he speaks the fact’s along with his opinion’s.
But to say things like “Go see Motley Crue instead and have some fun,” and “Shut up and sing you wanker,” well that just makes you sad and pathetic. You’re probably one of the loser’s who shit on the Dixie Chicks for having an opinion. Fact is, the world needs change or were all going to pay dearly for the mistakes Bush has made and continues to make. Ed’s just trying to make that happen. And I for one encourage and applaud him, and will do everything in my power to help him. So if you want to continue thinking musicians have no right to speak there opinion’s on politics and are here purely for your entertainment, that’s your right. I just have no idea how you pull off typing your witty comments with your head jammed so far up your ass.
Oh yeah and I was there on Saturday night and IT WAS FUCKING AMAZING!!!! 23RD SHOW AND THE BEST ONE YET!!!! PEARL JAM RULE ALL!!!!

Bushleaguer | 6/16/2008, 8:03 pm EST

PJ wrote Bushleaguer 8 years ago. Listen to it or if your not into the cool grove read the lyrics. Say’s it all! Un sew your eyelids!

yes | 6/16/2008, 7:42 pm EST

if you can’t handle political opinions then don’t fuckin go to the shows. everyone knows ed is liberal. what better time to strike a point then in the presence of 50 000 people. no wonder this world is going to shit with idiots like that still denying the truth.

Rockstar70 | 6/16/2008, 4:21 pm EST

Eddie Vedder doesn’t shower to save water for the whales!!!

stormingoffdude | 6/16/2008, 3:06 pm EST

i went to the freaking bathroom, i didnt storm off…geez..Vedder says something stupid about gas prices, i yell my dipsh*t comment, which i wish i hadnt, and it seems to be a topic of conversation. the show was amazing, talk about the music you dipsh*ts

PJFanWithMyOwnPolitics | 6/16/2008, 2:46 pm EST

proudofpearljam, when you write “Don’t go to the shows if you are that offended. Instead, go to a nascar race where you will feel more at home.” you’re a perfect example of the type of elitism that will be the Dems’ undoing in November.

I love the band, and tolerate the grandstanding. I don’t need Ed to tell me how to see the world, though.

tall rickie vandenbush | 6/16/2008, 2:03 pm EST

pearl jam is great, still, and eddie can say whatever he wants to say. no one is forcing you to agree. just block it out for 5 seconds and wait till the next song starts..

i’d talk more, but i really have to go take a dump now. peace everyone.

ThedDudelovesPJ | 6/16/2008, 1:41 pm EST

John Q-You said this,

“Why is Pearl Jam trying to accomplish by getting political. They are just trying to tap into the hate George Bush train to gain popularity.”

John Q-You’re a moron.

do you think if i brought a kid to the front row… and he drank from Ed’s bottle… that I could have Ed arrested?

Vedderfan | 6/16/2008, 1:28 pm EST

BEST BAND IN THE LAND. These guys set the pace and there is barely anyone keeping up. Eddie has been consistently outspoken as a liberal voice since he hit the big time. Love him or ignore him, he has every right to say whatever he wants. He’s living the dream, and we all wish we were him. A dude stormed off the grounds of at Bonnaroo because Eddie said something about Bush? Ladies and gentleman we have a new “world’s biggest douchebag!” All Hail the omnipotent Pearl Jam!

CMax | 6/16/2008, 12:35 pm EST

JohnQ, PJ spoke out against Bush WAY before hating Bush was mainstream. They just didn’t make the news like the Dixie Chicks!

Hoss | 6/16/2008, 12:15 pm EST

Hey Moonie, you wanker, PJ are exercising one of their rights. It’s called the 1st Amendment. I know you probably haven’t heard of it because your Daddy Bill O Reilly didn’t tell you about it.

And for those of you saying that Eddie shouldn’t be singing “Crown of Thorns” because he’s not Andrew Wood, think about your logic. So he shouldn’t be singing “All along the watch tower” because he’s not Bob Dylan? That makes no sense. Jeff and Stone wrote a great song and its only fitting that Vedder would be comfortable singing it so people can hear it. Eddie sings covers because he has a lot of respect for those artist who’s songs he sings. He exposes a lot of people to other people’s work who they might not hear otherwise. Plus, he usually sings the songs better than the original artist.

down with Motley Crue! | 6/16/2008, 11:25 am EST

Eddie Vedder ain’t no Danny Diablo!!

I’ll bet Eddie Vedder eats tree bark to help conserve the corn crops!!!

Joker77 | 6/16/2008, 11:03 am EST

PJ rocks. Part of seeing them is the political side of eddie. Some of us prefer good, well written songs, preformed at a high level, a good time, and the ability to think in our bands, If you don’t want that go see a lame band like Motly Crue.

rockstar70isanasshat | 6/16/2008, 10:03 am EST

PJ play Crown of Thorns once in awhile and its awesome. I’m gonna say better than Woods version.

awesome band! | 6/16/2008, 9:29 am EST

pearl jam has spoken politically long before bush was in office, its nothing new. also, they don’t need to depend on political beliefs to boost their popularity. it isn’t a coincidence that they have been one of the top touring bands of the past fifteen years. keep it up boys!

proudofpearljam | 6/16/2008, 9:08 am EST

More people should voice their opinions politically. I have been to multiple Pearl Jam shows and he never goes on long, extended rants, it is usually quite brief. If more musicians, athletes, etc. stood up for their beliefs (both political and international) then maybe the world would be a better place. Despite their egos you have to commend people like Vedder and Bono. People would have to be living under a rock to not know Pearl Jam’s perspective on the state of this country. Don’t go to the shows if you are that offended. Instead, go to a nascar race where you will feel more at home. People who look up to Bush, despite the fact that he has driven this country into the ground, must have been dropped on their heads multiple times as children. Keep it up Pearl Jam!!

moonie | 6/16/2008, 7:41 am EST

Lay off the politics and sing you wanker!

great band | 6/16/2008, 6:50 am EST

Stone and Jeff were both members of Mother Love Bone and after Andrew Wood died they formed Pearl Jam. Vedder and Wood both are great singers with differing styles, Eddie Vedder by no means ruins Crown of Thorns.

No no no no no no no. | 6/16/2008, 2:28 am EST

If by “Why would they play “Crown of Thorns” that was a Mother Love Bone” song and Eddie Vedder is no Andrew Wood!!” you mean Eddie Vedder is capable of writing coherent lyrics, singing them with a consistency that suggests he knows the melody instead of making it up off the cuff and he shows up to the concert sober enough to perform a solid show, then you’re right. The nineties ended a long time ago. All the junkies are dead now, so can we please stop worshiping unrealized potential now?

I don’t know what anyone is surprised about. PJ have been voicing their political views since well before most of the people posting on this page were born.

John Q | 6/16/2008, 1:52 am EST

Why is Pearl Jam trying to accomplish by getting political. They are just trying to tap into the hate George Bush train to gain popularity.

Anonymous | 6/15/2008, 11:20 pm EST

i was there, it was amazing. that show was fucking solid.

and, despite it being ‘bush country’ which is bullshit i live in tn and everyone i know hates his guts, the crowd was applauding the political statements thrown out by vedder for the most part.

better man and better half were amazing. so was alive.

rockstar70 | 6/15/2008, 10:34 pm EST

Why would they play “Crown of Thorns” that was a Mother Love Bone” song and Ediie Vedder is no Andrew Wood!!

rockstar70 | 6/15/2008, 10:30 pm EST

Screw PEARL JAM music should not be poltical. Go see MOTLEY CRUE this summer and have some fun!!!!

Addison | 6/15/2008, 8:28 pm EST

Mcfisto, i feel your pain. If only they could’ve played black or crown of thorns…

thedude | 6/15/2008, 7:42 pm EST

Surforia- why do you think he was a redneck? maybe eddie actually did say something completely nonsensical and that dude was simply pointing out his ridiculousness. i have a feeling the “redneck” dude might not have left but stuck around to catch an epic show from a band he started following before long before they were famous

Me | 6/15/2008, 7:09 pm EST

Honestly, can RollingStone go a whole article without mentioning Barack Obama? Seriously although Eddie himself may vote for Obama, I believe that he was urging people to use their voices and vote…not supporting a specific candidate…jeeze RS needs to get their head out of their newfound political asses.

PJ Rules | 6/15/2008, 6:50 pm EST

Eddie (and the band) was awesome last nite.

Lynyrd, have I gotalilstory4u | 6/15/2008, 4:46 pm EST

Hey, I’m a republican but Vedder, Springsteen, Keenan and those guys should keep saying anything they wish. I will not call them names, although I may or may not boo their political comments. Their music is too important not to take in. Without any artist’s assistance, I jumped off the Bush bandwagon BEFORE his second term. I’m driving three hours to see Pearl Jam 6/16 (fifth time), see you in section 115.

surforia | 6/15/2008, 4:12 pm EST

that redneck that walked out early is clearly the “dipshit.” he should do all of us a favor and kill himself. Peal Jam is epic. Can’t believe they opened with “Hart to Imagine;” that is sick!!!

ryan | 6/15/2008, 3:57 pm EST

why hasn’t rolling stone said anything about 1 jam band…

McFisto | 6/15/2008, 2:50 pm EST

Man I’m still angry they didn’t play Black when they came down to West Palm Beach last Wednesday!!!

place to be | 6/15/2008, 2:36 pm EST

man, that’s the place to be at a pearl jam show! Good for eddie that he’s still expressing his views wether people like it or not and the show sounds like it was perfect. Gonna check them out when they’re on tour near me. Pearl Jam, yeaaaaaaaaah!!!!!!!!!!!!
