Metallica Bring Metal Thunder and Heavy Pyro to Bonnaroo

6/14/08, 10:07 am EST

Throughout Metallica’s two-hour headlining set at Bonnaroo on Friday night, singer James Hetfield kept teasing that the band would be playing new songs from their just-finished album, at one point saying: “If you want, we’ll just play some old stuff. But what if I said “No!” Alas, the crowd would have to settle for the band’s metal classics, and one of the heaviest Bonnaroo sets ever. (There were some hints that would be the case: The band had played only old songs at the warm-up show the night before in nearby Nashville, Tennessee at the very small Basement club.)

Metallica absolutely killed with a set heavy on classics like “Master of Puppets,” “Nothing Else Matters” and “The Unforgiven” as well as some deep cuts like the Misfits cover “Last Caress/Green Hell” (from the Garage Days EP). Metallica wrapped things up with massive, ear-shattering pyrotechnics during the one-two punch of the set closer: “One” and “Enter Sandman.” As for anything related to the new album - aside from a pocket of fans shouting “Play new songs!” - Lars Ulrich offered only this just before leaving the stage: “We’ll be back in October with a brand new record and a tour. Thank you!”

Metallica_is_crap | 10/25/2008, 2:21 pm EST

These geezers need to give up the angry-expression photo sessions, hang up their guitars and fade away.
Forget for a minute that every member of this band is a total clown as well as a total jerk (putting it very lightly there).
Their music is awful, been irrelevant for more than a decade now.
When I was a kid, I thought the Master of Puppets CD was cool because I was retarded but watching these douchebags grow old on mtv was pretty sad.

Why do you morons insist on supporting these selfish, washed up, ugly old hack?
Lars and jim don’t give two squirts about you or about playing good music.

Message to Metallica haters: Get yourselves a life please and I really really mean it. Your critics stink and aren’t important at all, cause deep down inside your rotten souls Metallica is the best. If it wasnt for Metallica the world would fall apart. METALLICA are gods and kings of Metal forever.

Pedro | 6/22/2008, 10:13 am EST

This is to ALL Metallica haters: you are all sad, you dont know what you are talking about, haven’t you got anything better to say rather than saying the same old thing over and over again? Get yourselves a life! Listen to Metallica, it’ll bring you all your good life’s back, No matter what you all say Metallica will NEVER die. Metallica will always be the best full stop. You all say that Metallica sucks but it’s the opposite. Metallica haters suck, bow down to the kings of metal:METALLICA

metallica matters and always will matter. they are legendary and their performance kicked a**

Robbaroo | 6/19/2008, 11:35 pm EST

I’m not sure if the author of this article was actually at Bonnaroo because he clearly got it wrong. What really happened was a pathetic attempt by a has-been band to try and prove to themselves that they can still rock. Hetfield’s comments were said out of frustration with the crowd’s indifference to their performance. Most of the crowd didn’t really care if they quit or not. Honestly, the whole thing felt awkward to me. Good thing Conrad West made it so Metallica doesn’t go down as the worst mainstage act at Roo ‘08.

jack | 6/19/2008, 8:03 pm EST

Metallica is the best heavy metal band there is and ever will be, and the’re even better live, its the best live show i have ever seen hands down……you just can’t hate.

tha GENERAL | 6/17/2008, 6:00 pm EST

METALLICA earned their status as METAL GODS. Marilyn Manson is a POSER!!!!!!!

what have they | 6/17/2008, 3:11 pm EST

done in the last 10 years? There hairband rock is gone. Now there is Emo(I hate personally) and Indie Folk music. Metallica was once great but that was when people wore stone wash jean jackets with their patch and patches of Tesla and Winger on it as well.

Cherrydoom | 6/17/2008, 1:14 pm EST

metallica is still the best metal band today no one comes close to being as good as these guys hopefully their new cd will be great they deserve to have a really good album for all they have done

Metallica hater hater | 6/17/2008, 1:12 pm EST

How can you call Metallica has-beens? A better comparison is the Rolling Stones, circa 1990, when they hadn’t put out a compelling album for several years. These guys have made some of the most legendary and influential tracks of their generation, and they still matter. Tons of people still come out to see them because the music endures. (That said, “St. Anger” did kinda suck. That is all.)

JaugerNUT | 6/17/2008, 11:54 am EST

Metallica is the only band that matters and the only band that ever mattered. Their lyrics are deep, come from the heart and soul, and thoroughly document the ruthless and painful struggle for spiritual improvement (too bad few people see that). Their records continue to be above and beyond what everyone else is doing and I’m sure that “Death Magnetic” will follow in the same path. Say what you want haters, but there is NOBODY that does it better than these guys, and NOBODY that sounds as powerful live as they do!

Past their prime | 6/17/2008, 10:19 am EST

yeah this album will not matter……..their era is gone and they are has beens.

Grant | 6/17/2008, 1:45 am EST

I haven’t enjoyed new Metallica in about 15 years or so. Hopefully that will all change this fall.

Brian Gallagher | 6/17/2008, 1:36 am EST

These guys are the BTO of the 00`s

Metallica Fan Forever | 6/16/2008, 11:48 pm EST

[beavis & butthead mode]

huh huh metallica sucks huh huh

[/beavis & butthead mode]

That’s what Metallica critics sound like at this point. You’ve been saying the same thing for over 12 years and the band is still bigger than ever. If you don’t like them, fine, but you seem to have some sort of fetish for them which is why you choose a Metallica thread out of the millions of threads on the web to post on.

Why would you be post on this thread if you weren’t a Metallica fan? Really, why are you here?

sanitarium | 6/15/2008, 11:51 am EST
