The jury in the R. Kelly trial is now deliberating the singer’s fate, as closing arguments concluded yesterday. The prosecution opted to show the jury the video they’ll be watching constantly during their deliberations: The supposed sex tape starring Kelly and a then-underaged girl. The prosecution also painted Kelly as a sexual deviant who walks around with a duffle bag filled with tapes of his conquests. The defense countered with a bunch of name-calling, labeling witnesses as “extortionists” and “liars,” saying that finding Kelly guilty meant calling the girl “a whore” because of the apparent money exchange on the tape and even going as far as claiming that the prosecution’s star witness — alleged third partner in the threesome Lisa Van Patten — was “Satan.” As with all celebrity trials, it’s hard to gage what the jury will decide. The evidence is obviously stacked against Kelly: the sex tape looks like it was filmed in a distinct place in Kelly’s home, witnesses have said that it’s Kelly and the girl on the video and even Van Patten, who claims she is on the video, says the duo are on the tape. The defense is pulling at straws with their insistence that the tape doesn’t star Kelly, and then there’s the whole missing mole theory, even though the prosecution found the mole on the video. However, relatives of the girl who is supposed to be in the video have said they could not identify her, and all it takes is one juror to doubt the prosecution’s case. Keep checking back to Rock Daily as we anxiously we await the outcome of this trial.
