Atlantic Records Sues Stone Temple Pilots’ Weiland, Kretz

6/13/08, 9:10 am EST

They may have just reunited, but two members of the Stone Temple Pilots are already facing a lawsuit from Atlantic Records. The label alleges that frontman Scott Weiland and drummer Eric Kretz are trying to prematurely end their contract and stop touring unless Atlantic makes significant changes to their old deal. Now that STP has voiced their intention to record another album, Atlantic wants in, as well as the two other albums the band owes the label. Dean and Robert DeLeo were not named in the suit, as Atlantic dropped them in 2003 so they could pursue other projects.

In a statement released this morning, the band says, “Stone Temple Pilots were deeply disappointed to see that Atlantic filed a surprise lawsuit against two members of the legendary band STP when they were in the middle of what were believed to be cordial and positive discussions about STP returning to the studio to make a new album after five years. Despite the allegations in the complaint, the band never threatened anything more than remaining away from the studio until equitable terms could be arranged. The precipitous filing of this action is yet another example of the difficulties facing artists in the new music environment, as relationships between artists and their labels fall further and further apart.

Eric and Scott have not yet been served and hope that Atlantic will allow cooler heads to prevail, and have the courtesy of shelving this action to permit negotiations to continue in a positive spirit rather than under a dark cloud of hostility. Should everyone operate in good faith, STP are certain that a new album from the band will be available soon. Should Atlantic instead pursue this scorched earth policy towards the band, the ultimate victims will be STP’s fans, who will never be able to enjoy a new album from the group.”

is there ever a day when trouble doesnt follow scott weiland

lee | 6/13/2008, 11:52 am EST

this has nothing to do with scott weiland. this is atlantic records all the way. reread the article friend, atlantic is suing two members of stp, scott and eric becuase they ow the lable 2 more STP albums even though scott and eric is trying to renegociate a deal with them. for anyone that has been a longtime STP fan knows that all of STP’s albums have been released through Atlantic Records. These guys have been with them since day one and if they want to renegociate a deal I think they’ve earned it and the label should do everything in there power to work with the band and not against them. This lawsuit is stupid and shouldn’t even be taking place. If this can’t be resolved STP may want to consider going to another label and perhaps adopting a new name if neccesary to avoid any further lawsuits until this storm has passed. Who’s Atlantic gonna put n they hit list next? Led Zepplin???

R n' R | 6/13/2008, 12:07 pm EST

haha…did they just call themselves ‘legendary’? Looks like Weiland is trying to write another ‘I’m so great’ response to something.

Don’t sign the contract if you can’t be a big boy and honor it. And no new album from the group? I will miss another Shangri-la-di-not so good album. The fans go for your old hits, not your new ones fellas. That being said, maybe the DeLeo brothers will come up with some really cool stuff again that Weiland won’t ruin with his ego.

le gendary? hahahahahahahahahaha. please.

F-off R n’R. Shangri-La-Dee-Da is a great album.

When a band earns a reputation the are entitled to renegotiate… Especially when the outcome is lucrative for all. The DeLeo brothers certainly are going to ask for a bit more. Why not make it even across the board? The label
knows that the market will buy the “STP” logo… If the band were to record, even a great album, by any other name… It wouldn’t be so marketable.

Swingline | 6/13/2008, 1:51 pm EST

Maybe it was a bad choice of words, like instead of “legendary” they could have said “forgettable”.

Luv2Rok | 6/13/2008, 5:01 pm EST

Legendary ? I don’t think so, get real. Weiland is a drugged out loser. He signed a contract so now he needs to follow through. No new album ??? So fu*&ing what !!!… P.S. Lee, don’t ever mention STP in the same breath as Zeppelin, you show a serious lack of knowledge when it comes to music. Weiland coudn’t hold Zeppeins used condoms.

-hey Luv2Rok if you have a problem what what i said you have the right to make an argument but don’t bash the person for speaking there mind. i’ve been a musician for 15 years and have been a cd collector aof all types of music for almost 20 and i just call em how i see em. its funny not once have i read a post where someone also recongizes that atlantic is being really petty with this lawsuit because that’s exactly what this lawsuit is…petty! it seems like this lawsuit is being done in some type of spite, and its just downright wrong. if scott and eric is willing to try and renegociate a new deal with them then i don’t see why this lawsuit should even countine. its almost as if atlantic doesn’t care if STP cuts a new album with them or not and just wants to get a quick buck. i made the zeeplin refence because you know man, zeeplin may have had a contract with atlantic for x amount of records and since john bonhan died the band decided to part ways. now all these years later they reformed, even if it was for one concert they still reformed,so are they next on atlantic’s hit list or any other band that has a similar situation such as STP? bottom line like STP or hate them one thing is for certain…we could use them right about now as todays mainstream music is mostly all about pop and not enough rock.

sorry for the double post, that was accident. hope they delete that

Can I read one story about STP without this debate about whether they merit news or not? Bottom line is, regardless of your feelings about them, they are popular and they are news worthy. Why does everyone feel the need to debate the band’s self worth rather than the issue of the article? But since everyone else is throwing their two cents in, I might as well also. Just because STP may not have the musical significance of Led Zeppelin doesnt mean they are worthless, have any of these people that mock STP heard their cover of “Dancing Days” or anything that may not be on the radio? Anything like the brilliance of “Atlanta” or “Hello, It’s Late”? Most likely not, because those songs are progressions past the first record and people simply can’t look at an artist’s work before judging them. (Because that would be just!) It also doesnt hurt that Weiland and co. have been turning out some of the purest rock in the last decade or so weither it be with Slash and Duff or the Deleo brothers and if Atlantic wants a piece of that pie they will have to ask nicely, I agree with the artist’s sentiment that this is the reason we have the record industry in the trouble its in now.

STPFAN | 6/14/2008, 12:32 am EST

Just another pathetic attempt by a dying record company to keep their hand in everything. Let’s hope this all ends well.

OC77 | 6/14/2008, 7:08 pm EST

And they wonder why people just download the music for free now. Fans are tired of this crap. But STP is a proven seller with a fan base a record company can exploit. A new album isn’t and a tour isn’t enough for them. They want to over expose and squeeze the orange as dry as possible. I just saw STP in Chicago and the show rocked. But I don’t need a new album, tour , new packaged greatest hits, a rareites disc, live album, dvd, a covers disc, and a tribute disc. An album and a tour is fine. Note to record company: Stop Fucking Exploiting Us and your Artists.

Florida Mike | 6/14/2008, 8:52 pm EST

Record companies have, over the decades, tried to make us believe that they are all important to the success of the music artist. They were the gatekeeper of all opportunities in recording by their own design. Now with the help of the computer age and the Internet, Artists are more in control in recording and distribution of their property. Atlantic has to show us one more time that record companies are evil by nature and must need a stake driven through it’s heart.

dr. Caldingstein | 6/15/2008, 10:49 am EST

Love this band but Scott really could give a fuck about his fans. He’s a diva and there’s no chance of them finishing another cd together any time soon.

dr. Caldingstein | 6/15/2008, 11:01 am EST

If they DO come out with new stuff, Weiland better be “inspired” because I’m not listenin’ to “Shagri La Vol. 2″ That shit sounded like a Chris Daughtry and Vince Neil collaboration.

Heard it before | 6/15/2008, 12:19 pm EST

I like STP. I love 90’s rock music and I would love all my favorite bands from 92 – 97 to make new music. But, why is STP the one we have to hear about every damn day!! RS has been talking about this soap opera for way too long. Why can’t we hear about other bands still touring and making music that still play Rock n Roll?? I.E. Oasis. A much more interesting story.
