On the Charts: Disturbed Proves “Indestructible,” Grabs Top Spot

6/11/08, 11:40 am EST

The Big News: Not playing their new songs live ended up being a good form of promotion for Disturbed as the nü-metal outfit stormed to the top spot as their Indestructible sold 254,000 copies in its debut week. Also indestructible was the NOW series’ 28th volume, selling 185,000 to take second in a debut-heavy week on the charts. Last week’s king Usher and his Here I Stand dropped to three, while Weezer and their red-colored eponymous album bowed at fourth with 127,000 copies sold. Rounding out the top five was Journey and their YouTube-recruited singer with Revelation.

Debuts: Perhaps aided by her strange attempt at viral promotion, Ashanti’s Declaration took the six spot. Jewel’s foray into country music, Perfectly Clear, entered at eight, the not-Radiohead-approved Best Of collection came in at 18 (single disc) and 81 (double disc), Gavin Rossdale’s solo Wanderlust entered at 32 and critical darlings Fleet Foxes debuted at 83 with their self-titled disc.

Last Week’s Heroes: The chart’s upper echelon was completely trampled by all the debuts, as only three of last week’s top ten remained. Like its decrease in ticket sales at movie theatres, the Sex and the City soundtrack dropped from two to seven. 3 Doors Down tumbled from three to nine and the four divas who were chained to the top ten — Leona Lewis, Duffy, Mariah Carey and Madonna — occupied 11-14 in that order. Next week looks to belong to Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III, as the much-anticipated album sold 4,000 street date violating copies to debut at 167 and will likely hit number one next week with as many as 800,000 copies sold.

Well really it is fair (albeit pretentious) to say that truly beautiful intelligent music is far too demanding for the masses who elect what will and will not be number one.

The best records of the year (coming from someone who likes a challenge) are Opeth’s new opus “Watershed” (at least a thousand times more vicious, emotional, beautiful, intelligent, and artistic than anything disturbed will probably ever do - even though I actually rate disturbed as “good” in “nu metal” terms [dumbed-down metal]) and Meshuggah’s “ObZen”

I look forward to the new Metallica record in September, as I’ve heard people who have listened to it (obviously journalists and such) claim it is their best effort since the 80s - and, of course, Metallica put out genuinely intelligent music back then!

So to sum up what I’m trying to say - everyone of course has an opinion, but the most beautiful of music will never be successful because it is (quite simply) NOT SIMPLE. And ‘not simple’ is too much for 75% of us.

regarding the Revelation album…I LOVE the new songs, they have that sense of sophistication and maturity that you can really feel and hear when you listen to them closely!!! JRNY made the songs contemporary and relevant to the times…the lyrics and emotions evoke feelings and issues that are universal…thus, any generation can easily identify with the message of the songs!!! The sound mixing is spectacular and Pineda’s recording voice is sooo soothing to listen to even with the rockers, that you can not help but listen to the songs over and over again!!! This album is a masterpiece, the new songs have all the potential to become classics, someday!!! I particularly LIKE Turn Down The World Tonight, What it Takes to Win, What I Needed, and Where Did I Lose Your Love!!!

Disturbed needs to vary their sound a bit. Take a cue from Tool or Green Day. Im happy that they were successful. Their unwillingness to change is going to shorten their life span

Don’t care for Disturbed, but it’s the Usher slipping that I’m ecstatic about! :)

I’m a fan of rock music, but Disturbed’s new album is just so bland. 10,000 fists was much better, more interesting and varied. Indestructible is just a wall of noise

yeah you’re right. lil’ wayne’s music is much less corny. oh wait no it isn’t. usher is an amazing musician. oh wait he isn’t. God bless hard rock/metal at the top of the charts.

Autofail | 6/11/2008, 4:47 pm EST

Disturbed creates some of the worst music I’ve ever had the displeasure of hearing.

T | 6/11/2008, 1:59 pm EST

All Disturbed’s music is just corny and the same. There are a lot of dumb people out there buying cheese rock.

Morgan | 6/11/2008, 1:25 pm EST

Im very happy for disturbed……They get slammed by the media alot for the typical nu-metal complaints…

But anyone that has listend to their cd “believe” knows they craft intelligent-emotionally powerful rock.

I believe this is their 3rd number one cd as well…

props to them !
