A Supreme Hour In Five Sentences: Bronx spitfire Rece Steele narrowly defeated her new best-bud, the spunky Russo-Brooklynite Byata, in the ultimate battle for Miss Rap Supreme. For their final test, the girls had to write an original song to be performed with L.A.’s coulda-been Dap-Tones, Breakestra. Byata came a little granola, telling a backpacker-friendly story about the path to her hip-hop greatness. Celebrity judge Missy Elliott asked fellow judge Mona Scott (an industry vet) if she could even remember the hook and eventually came up blank. The usually fierce Rece Steele didn’t disappoint, running around the stage and coming so hard that even challenger Byata was singing along — eventually taking the $100,000, the title of Miss Rap Supreme, a week of MySpace hits and, most importantly, the honor of being serenaded by Kool Keith!
Not-So-Supreme Beef: Before the final battle, the show kicked off with three remaining femcees — Rece, Byata and Atlanta story-spinner Ms. Cherry — doing the inevitable parking-lot battle to narrow down the two finalists: “Get personal. Name names. Call people out. Don’t go soft.” But since resident beefmaster general Chiba left the house last week, it was as friendly as a celebrity roast. Ultimately RS fave Ms. Cherry was sent packing for setting up good punchlines (even taking a swipe at the actual failed rap career of Rece Steele’s mom, L.A. Star) but not knocking them down.
Supreme Cameos!: VH1 could get Missy to show up, but not our White Rapper Show fave Persia? The inestimable Roxanne Shante was on hand to help the girls ruin their new friendships with a little battle rap advice. Then Will.I.Am showed up to give some songwriting tips that, thankfully, did not involve the girls saying things like “lady lumps.” Byata spit a tune she had in her pocket for Mr. I.Am and he was dutifully impressed, so maybe next summer he’ll have another song for us to love for a week and then pray all year to escape.
