Report: AC/DC To Go Wal-Mart Only

6/9/08, 9:10 am EST

AC/DC have left music stores across the country thunderstruck as the Australian band’s new album, due out in the fall, will be released exclusively through Wal-Mart, the Wall Street Journal reports. The still-untitled, Brendan O’Brien-produced album will be the group’s first since 2000’s Stiff Upper Lip. AC/DC join a club currently occupied by Garth Brooks, Journey and the Eagles as artists who have made their albums exclusively available for purchase via the retail giant (in theory, at least.)

Sorry, but this is one of the most sell-outish, unartistic thing I’ve ever seen from a band.

Absolutely disgraceful.

stupid AC/DC | 6/9/2008, 10:47 am EST

gotta agree with Adam,,,,,,what a stupid move. Unfortunately though, WalMart has its fans,,,,,,come on folks, this is a bad, bad idea.

Anonymous | 6/9/2008, 1:09 pm EST

wow remember when people just listened to music and didnt cry and complain all the time? (dont reference most of the above comments) AC/DC = Great!

Kbilly | 6/9/2008, 1:18 pm EST

As if AC/DC doesn’t have enough money they need to sign an exclusive distribution agreement with Walmart? Who even cares, these guys haven’t been relevant in years. Worst drummer in history by the way.

KALI from Portugal | 6/9/2008, 1:33 pm EST

Fuck wallmart and fuck AC/DC

Bon Scott just turned over in his grave……

Zachra | 6/9/2008, 1:45 pm EST

Man, we sell a shit ton of AC/DC here at the store and I’ve been fielding questions about the new album for like 2 years now. I knew it would suck, but this is an entirely different level of suck on top of that.

Hardcore ole timer | 6/9/2008, 1:49 pm EST

this ain’t nothing, remember when Dylan went electric…talk about stuff hitting the fan…..the times they are a changing

bob | 6/9/2008, 2:14 pm EST

Well that one more reason to download it

bob | 6/9/2008, 2:14 pm EST

Well thats one more reason to download it

Kbilly | 6/9/2008, 2:27 pm EST

I hardly think comparing Dylan playing an electric guitar can be compared to only selling your cd at a superstore giant, but to each his own i suppose

Smoky | 6/9/2008, 3:00 pm EST

This agreement is nothing but a dirty deed done dirt cheap. And the consumer will be left shook all night long when they won’t be able to find a Wal-Mart store nearby. Hopefully other artists and bands don’t follow suit because this will just bring both the consumer and music industry on a path to the highway to hell.

mrthompson | 6/9/2008, 3:16 pm EST

No matter. I’ll pick it up used from the local record shop.

“Bon Scott just turned over in his grave……”, and threw up in disgust.

Taco Man | 6/9/2008, 4:04 pm EST

I like Wal-Mart because they offer obese, smelly, people on welfare a fine place to shop.

Chris | 6/9/2008, 5:14 pm EST

Here is what I don’t understand… everyone on here keeps making comments about wanting to burn the album for free , or downloading it. Why can’t AC/DC and Walmart make a living at what they do ? You young douches get paid for your jobs correct ? Or do you work for free ?

Jungleland | 6/9/2008, 5:48 pm EST

…oh, and blame the CRIMINAL record distribution system for this kinda thing happening. It’s such a raw deal for artisits and labels that they HAVE to go another way to make money.

G-Man | 6/9/2008, 5:52 pm EST

Wal-Mart is the worst kind of American criminal and AC/DC is teaming with them? What a load. I’ll pick it up used at the local store.

al | 6/9/2008, 6:12 pm EST

how will people not in the US of A get this album exactly?

Tino | 6/9/2008, 6:46 pm EST

The Eagles I can see since most country fans go to Wal-Mart, but AC/DC… masters of RAWK? WTF?

Josh | 6/9/2008, 9:53 pm EST

SELLOUT!!!!!!! Walmart is EVIL!!! They have cheap prices, but they are EVIL!!! I guess I’ll have to illegally download it.

Jordan | 6/9/2008, 10:00 pm EST

I don’t know that Wal Mart is “evil,” per se, but it’s certainly very un-Rock n Roll.

PH Jim | 6/9/2008, 10:35 pm EST

Chris,

As for “the young douches,” its not about them. As for AC/DC, they’re not making a killing off of a deal like this, either. Let’s remember, bands don’t get much beyond 10% of the album sales take. This is a good deal for Wal-Mart and the record company. AC/DC will make their money touring.

However, as long as bands are willing to promote this way, “the easy way out,” they are holding the evolution of music back. The additional avenues that have opened up are advantageous to all. Do everyone a favor and find alternative methods of distribution. Bands will eventually finds that they can make money off of their album AND tour sales instead of being raked over by record labels.

Moose | 6/10/2008, 1:11 am EST

Dilemmas, dilemmas… I truly hate Wal-Mart and I truly love Angus and Co… Don’t want to burn it illegally. Tower Records went the way of the Do-Do. Damn, I guess I’m going to Wal-Mart. I don’t think $$$ is an issue for AC/DC. I bet it’s their new producer/marketer.

SVUF | 6/10/2008, 12:33 pm EST

Wow! Are We stereotyping!! Only country music fans to go Wal-mart? Also, why is everyone knocking Wal-mart and record companies? Don’t they have families to support especially those people who are employed by the above mentioned are on the lower half of the corporate totem pole!?! People…stop thinking of yourselves and being selfish!! If you don’t like Wal-mart then don’t go there to shop that’s all. Yes, you have a right to your own opinion, but places like Wal-mart and these record companies have to earn money too. Look at it this way: how would any of you like it if people complain about the company you work for and as a result, close shop because everyone was boycotting it? I know I would not enjoy being unemployeed especially it is very difficult in getting a job these days. Becareful…when the shoe is on the other foot…

SVUF | 6/10/2008, 12:41 pm EST

Oh yea…if bands like AC/DC only get 10% of the take in selling albums, wouldn’t they take action to do something about it? I mean…what are their business managers for? I know if it was my band only getting 10% of the profits for any thing I produce/sell, I would sure take action to change it. So…it seems AC/DC isn’t complaining, so why are most of you?

jeffrey gusek | 6/10/2008, 2:54 pm EST

“Goin to da Wal-Mart ta pick up da new Ay-She-Dee-Sheeeeee!”

jonah | 6/10/2008, 3:20 pm EST

Want to know why Wal-Mart is evil? Try living in a small town and watching the economy sink because this mega-store puts all of the mom & pop stores out of business, selling cheap crap to people who, ironically, suddenly can’t afford to buy quality goods any more because Wal-Mart sent them to the unemployment line. So what can they do? They get a job at Wal-Mart where they recieve substandard wages and benefits. I personally like AC/DC, but I have no idea why they would want to support Wal-Mart in any way.

cwesleyg | 6/10/2008, 3:34 pm EST

I’ve heard that Walmart censors music sold at their stores. This could prevent me from buying it until it gets released otherwise.

It will be released in other countries by other methods. Tower brought in another country’s release on the Eagles last album. Wal-mart does have a history of shady dealings… price fixing, employee mistreatment, they are the largets importer of Chinese goods in North America (negative in my book)… I don’t shop there much, cuz they are not the good citizens they preach being. They kill competition and thus harm locally grown businesses.

But I will probably buy a copy AC/DC’s new release there. Angus and the boys fucking rock! And I must have it! I’ll see about geting it in Winsor Ontario before I buy at Wally World though.

i was raped at wal-mart!!! | 6/10/2008, 3:42 pm EST

The next big thing in selling out will be The Eagles changing their name to “The Wal-Marts”. Angus Young will perform AC/DC’s entire next tour wearing a Wal-Mart greeters smock.

sonny | 6/10/2008, 4:40 pm EST

AC/DC are washed up anyway. Maybe this is their last chance to cash in.

Sad

Kevrock | 6/11/2008, 12:13 am EST

Give AC/DC a break. Their best album (Yes that was the format back in 1980) get screwed royally from record companies from those contracts. They are not the only ones either so good for them!

As for Wal-Mart…You want to save money when you shop right? Have sense people…Savings is savings. What other company is not ‘evil’…that’s the rub…they are all so deal with it.

All I hope is the ‘CD’ Rocks!

Willie | 6/11/2008, 2:56 am EST

To Kevrock…

In a big city that thrives on competition, there may not be a problem. But in a small town like mine, Wal-Mart isn’t about “savings”. It’s about undercutting other stores in the region, closing them down one by one until there is no competition left, then leaving the region high and dry once the economy is dead, leaving hundreds of families broke and jobless in the process.

Not evil in the least.

Walmart Records? | 6/11/2008, 5:19 am EST

Neat-o! So now I can use my food stamps to buy cigarettes, bullets, AND the new AC/DC album! Thank you Wal-Mart!
I am so inspired by this Wal-Mart exclusive deal, that I have decided to do a few things exclusively at Wal-Mart myself. For instance, now I will only use their bathrooms to shave in the morning. I will never shoplift from another store, and from now on I steal only Wal-Mart shopping carts. It’s what AC/DC would want!

wrecksracer | 6/11/2008, 12:07 pm EST

this makes me want to puke, and then choke to death on my own vomit….

Unsung_heroeS | 6/11/2008, 2:29 pm EST

So, Wal-mart hired some senior citizens who happen to rock really hard. C’mon, the guys were the first really great metal band, but they’re getting old along with the Eagles. I love both bands, but what better place for the old bastards than Wal-mart. Plus, it’s true, record stores are scarce. Hope foreign people don’t have to go to walmart.com to get the cd.

Unsung_heroeS | 6/11/2008, 2:32 pm EST

Wal-mart? Damn! I was gonna steal it from K-Mart. Oh, well.

Chris | 6/11/2008, 2:50 pm EST

Why not let the music stores sell the CD as well.

DissApointedFan | 6/13/2008, 1:20 am EST

Well they wont be getting my money….Can’t believe they chose walmart the worst retailer in the US!

Anonymous | 6/13/2008, 10:05 pm EST

I will buy the album. Been waiting on it for quite a while. I’m sure it will be good. Anyone heard Brian Johnsons three new songs on youtube? They are great.

Jima | 6/14/2008, 12:50 am EST

wow, my fav. band of all time has just changed from ac/dc to metallica!!!!!!!!!

How ironic that i find out about this on friday the 13th

Mark | 7/4/2008, 10:52 am EST

After reading all of the opinions here, even as a fan, I’m surprised that many assume this was all done to ’screw’ the general public. While I realize many of the reasons that Wal-Mart is frowned upon, is it not true that, in general, they do offer lower prices than most other retailers, even on CD’S?? Plus, the overwhelming majority of money a band makes is directly from touring. At least this band doesn’t tour without having a recording to promote, unlike many ‘classic rock’ bands, who just tour with no new material. I think the record company had much influence on the decision anyway.

wallylover | 9/7/2008, 6:16 pm EST

I now love Wal-Mart.

Frank Zito | 9/11/2008, 11:06 pm EST

Never been in a Walmart, never will. They came into our town, brought all their own out-of-town contractors and managers, have sucked the cash out of the local economy and given nothing back. Guess this is one AC-DC disc I won’t own.

acdc is good always | 9/16/2008, 9:40 pm EST

its not walmart fault you guys went to shop there

Dexter Mandrake | 9/19/2008, 1:37 pm EST

I have always loved AC/DC, but why o’ why did they decide to release their new album at Wal-Mart exclusively? Do they not realize or care that Wal-Mart is a corporate nightmare that rapes the American landscape and pulverizes small buinesses across our land? I’m realistic; I know they are a hard-working rock band who want financial gain from their efforts … but certainly they would have done just as well without having to sink to this low.

Screw Walmart | 9/22/2008, 8:29 pm EST

Screw Wal mart, Steal the CD and buy a ticket if you wanna support the band.

yogi | 10/14/2008, 6:35 am EST

Maybe walmart are for ACDC more honest than the record industry. Many great artists have been RIPPED OFF by the music industry already and so have ACDC apparently. In many ways the record industry is a lot WORSE that walmart is supposed to be. Also locals in small towns rip locals off in my experience, so you critics don’t be so naive.

Amy | 10/15/2008, 6:38 pm EST

I work for WalMart, I don’t love it but I make $14.82 per hour and have over $12,000 in profit sharing and 401k… what do you losers have??? Trust me, ac\dc is making alot of money from this deal and thats what is important. so, buy the cd at WalMart and just enjoy the damn music!

barron | 10/25/2008, 10:35 am EST

The thing about a new AC/DC album – good or bad, it WILL sell…a lot…maybe a million, maybe three million…maybe a lot more…in any event, whatever their intentions, (lower price, convenience – either on their part or the consumers’ – or just the fact that the walmart would basically make the biggest distributor in the country), i personally think this was a bad move…there are a lot of people who would actually rather spend a couple of bucks more at a record store than at the music section of walmart…and the record stores really could have used those sales…maybe the band didn’t think of this, or maybe they didn’t care…i don’t know…but personally, i think they should have given the stores the option, at least…and make no mistake, it was the band’s decision in the end…management would have had input, but the buck stops with the band…oh, and at 85 bucks a ticket (not counting fees), well…..

drdan | 10/26/2008, 10:11 am EST

NEWSFLASH… BUY IT ON ACDC’S WEBSITE FOR THE SAME PRICE AS WAL-MART…THEN SQUEAL ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE…CD ROMPS AND STOMPS…

Rori | 10/27/2008, 2:09 pm EST

This is totally lame. I mean who would not look forward to new AC/DC? But Walmart? Ugh. C’mon.

M | 10/27/2008, 6:35 pm EST

So whats next, AC/DC changes their name to AC-DC?

Angus and the boys rock!
Wal-Mart sucks!

Henry A | 11/19/2008, 1:30 am EST

The most important issue, and the reason I won’t buy ANY music at Walmart is that Walmart only sells EDITED (clean up lyrics) versions of albums. So, this means that AC/DC wrote and produced this album to fit the moral restrictions of WallMart. By the way I notice they now call their censored music “amended” instead of “edited”

Art | 11/20/2008, 7:47 pm EST

I applaud AC/DC for wanting to be a good old’ traditional rock n’ roll band and sell whole albums through a retailer rather than sell one MP3 through iTunes or whoever. Perhaps Wal-Mart was the only retailer who would agree to the way AC/DC wanted to sell their music and at the low price they wanted to sell it. Did you ever think of that before you bash Wal-Mart?
Maybe you should question WHY there isn’t anymore music stores besides used CD stores. Remember them? The stores that sold nothing but new CDs, tapes and LPs?

dan | 12/28/2008, 10:21 am EST

Ac-dc are a corporate scam!!!!!

keepnitreal | 8/12/2009, 9:37 pm EST

wow!! i just got through reading the plugs that are in here. regarding AC/DC chosing Wal-Mart for the cd.. must say they smart for chosing a company that strives for excellence. so basically if you trashing the desicion just shows you truely not a fan to not support them. comments regarding WM.. I find it so funny how everybody talks how they are so negative towards a town. may i add they offer up too 350 jobs for one store and offer great benefits? due to whats going on in the economy 350 extra job opportunities not a bad idea. also I may add you know other smaller store owners can buy there products for cheaper with WM than they can from the actual vendor?? so ending basically if you trash talking AC/DC and Wal-Mart try to make better statements that are actually true before you start plugging on here.

rb3 | 11/12/2009, 7:34 pm EST

For all you ignoramus pricks downing AC/DC for going with wal-mart to promote a record you need to worry about something more important. Name on band who would not be considerd sellouts based on the standards you pose to have and I will shit a golden egg for each of you whiney bastards! The bottom line is they are a great band who has had a great long career and it will continue wether you dumb asses want it to or not!
