All hail MMJ, the new Kings of American Rock n’ Roll. Though Evil Urges is not the masterpiece that some critics claim it to be (It’s their third best album), it is sound of a band stretching out and taking on a new shape. Think Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (again, not Wilco’s best (Summerteeth) despite the ubiquitous critical acclaim. Think Kid A. Think Achtung Baby (ok, that is U2’s best). MMJ emerged on the scene as a whiskey-soaked swamp monster, all reverb and dueling guitars. They’re power has only grown as Jim James’ continues to channel Prince, Neil Young, the Heartbreakers, Wilco and whoever else he’s sees fit into the greatest thing to happen to rock n’ roll since Radiohead.
