Lou Reed Does Not Care About Dow Jones

6/6/08, 5:04 pm EST

Journalists with the task of interviewing Lou Reed learned a valuable lesson today: Don’t ask Reed about financial matters. The former Velvet Underground singer was discussing his new Sirius radio show New York Shuffle with New York magazine when the journalist asked Reed, perhaps jokingly, about his stock options at the satellite radio station. Reed then launched into an expletive-laden tirade (highlight: “I’m here telling you the truth about music and you want to know if I have stock in the fucking radio?”) against the writer, Andrew M. Goldstein, before abruptly ending the interview.

Lou, if you want to do “freeform radio,” you don’t have to go to a big corporate satellite radio station, you could just head down to Jersey City and get a show on WFMU.org, THEY are the real freeform radio station. Run by volunteers and listener support, totally independent of commercial entities, WFMU.ORG is in a class by itself, and has a rich history of WONDERFUL RADIO. Apparently the reporter who asked you about whether you own a piece of satellite radio stock hit a nerve, “what did I do to deserve that! Whaaa!”

Sounds like you are protesting a bit too much. At least admit you are getting paid a HUGE amount for doing the radio schtick. Besides, WFMU has more listeners than sirius, AND FMU listeners are more serious music fans.

I was around when Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground made their big splash. They defined avant-garde for my crowd, which declared them brilliant. Imagine my shock a few years later when I heard an interview with him on the radio, and interview I eagerly anticipated. He was vapid. There was no there there.

Apparently there still isn’t.

As much as I love Lou, sometimes he does strike me as an ornery old cuss. I only wish he could take all of his rage and focus it into a sequel to ‘New York.’ I think it’s high time for him to re-explore our nation’s cultural zeitgeist starting from his own hometown. I want to hear what Lou has to say about the post-9/11 post-Bush world in which we live.

Remember that Honda (?) scooter ad he did in the 80s to the tune of Walk on the Wild Side? Mr. gritty New York integrity. Wonder how much he got for that.
