good for them, i am glad that they are on the verge of breaking that record.

talk about beating “the leak game…”

unohowinourgay | 6/6/2008, 3:20 pm EST

I don’t get Coldplay. Its depressing whiny music, but Radiohead does a better job at that.

ROCKSTAR 70 | 6/6/2008, 3:24 pm EST

I can’t figure out who is worse coldplay or Radiohead!!

joy division | 6/6/2008, 3:47 pm EST

you stole our font for that rush to the head or whatever album it’s called
keep it up with the lifestyle music

Zack | 6/6/2008, 4:06 pm EST

Just got done listening to it. It sure does sound a lot like early Radiohead.

Patrick | 6/6/2008, 4:42 pm EST

Nothing better than seeing someone pretend to forget the name of a platinum album to talk smack and look cool…

Me | 6/6/2008, 5:00 pm EST

I’ve heard the album via the leak and can say it’s a great one. Eno took them to a new level. I’m glad they’re making good music again after X & Y, which was boring.

What? | 6/6/2008, 6:13 pm EST

Are you people serious? Coldplay SUCKS!!!!!!! Radiohead are on a whole other planet compared to Coldplay… the new album is a continuation of the downward spiral they have been on after A Rush Of Blood… Seriously I think RS needs to listen to music and not promote it like they do with Coldplay, its obviously shit… I just call em like I hear em folks sorry…

blah blah blah | 6/6/2008, 6:30 pm EST

“a polished turd…” is what this album is…

no new sounds, no ground breaking lyrics….Strawberry Swing…WTF?!!!!

Tarjay | 6/6/2008, 6:50 pm EST

Love it–cool, textured, a definite expansion beyond what they’ve done before. I do miss the lyrics however that Chris used to write during Parachutes or AROBTTH, like “Bones sinking like stones” and “I wanna live in a wooden house–makin’ new friends would be easy”. They were more obscure and open to interpretation. Now they are little to catch-phrase.

Radiohead and Coldplay both suck,my not so favorite leak album (I hate it).

Coldplay is a Myth

raspberry beret | 6/7/2008, 12:27 am EST

Strawberry swing is probably my favorite song on the album. Coldplay are best when they do simple songs that just involves them pouring their heart out (ie. Everything’s Not Lost). I think this album, while definitely not their best (lets leave that for Rush of Blood) has really saves its heaviest punches for the final tracks. 4/5 stars

i’m a diehard Radiohead fan, but always want to say that i greatly respect Coldplay. Yes, their sounds CAN be similar, but Coldplay does have a brain of their own. I don’t think of them as copying radiohead tools or anything of the sort. i respect their work. i like what i’ve heard of Viva so far as well.

hmmm really.... | 6/7/2008, 11:03 am EST

Lost is the only somewhat good song on the album… It’s a little bit of a dissapointment, you’d expect more from Coldplay.

HanoverJ | 6/7/2008, 11:26 am EST

Last night I streamed this new album while me and my kids played chutes and ladders. It was a real hoot. These Coldplays can sure rock.

skerk | 6/7/2008, 1:14 pm EST

friggin brilliant.

Lifeplay | 6/7/2008, 2:23 pm EST

This new album is great! It certainly contains a darker yet vibrant tone than their previous albums. So far i am in love with “42,” “Lost,” “Strawberry Swing,” and “Viva La Vida.” Its ironic that people express that they dislike Coldplay and have the “time” to listen to their music!

jreed | 6/7/2008, 3:04 pm EST

I think this is one of the last great albums that any of us will ever hear. I mean it is essentially a concept album talking about the journey of life and death. And regardless of what any of you say, it’s genius. After hearing the album in it’s entirety, I can’t listen to any of the songs by themselves. I have to hear the whole thing. By the way, those who say Coldplay is over rated, I could say the same for Radiohead.

schumf1 | 6/7/2008, 3:12 pm EST

Love this album. It’s very refreshing after the clunker X & Y. I’m a huge Radiohead fan, and I definately don’t hear much of their influence anymore. It’s good to see Coldplay evolving and exploring their own sound.

anywayshigh | 6/7/2008, 3:13 pm EST

We played some of the new tunes at our annual church picnic yesterday. I love their music, it’s so wholesome and sweet-natured. It’s the only band I let my children listen to because I know we won’t hear any potty talk.

Regen Risk | 6/7/2008, 3:15 pm EST

After playing viva velveeta on the radio yesterday the dj said “this sounds like late 1980’s Moody Blues.” Ouch.

An excellent album! Currently listening to it for the second time off a web site that’s streaming it. Better than X&Y. 4 stars easily!

Matthew Parrish | 6/7/2008, 4:05 pm EST

Every time Coldplay provokes my interest with an engaging single only to bore me out of my mind with a lackluster album. Why must they infinitely torture me????? All the Eno tricks in the world can’t save a non-song such as “Lost.”

WOW | 6/7/2008, 4:34 pm EST

THIS ALBUM IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!
AWESOME!!!!!! !!

tjinsa | 6/7/2008, 5:13 pm EST

YAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWN.

BrunoPuntzJones | 6/7/2008, 6:49 pm EST

If you ever needed proof that Coldplay was Radiohead-lite, here it is. Way to jump on the Yorke bandwagon, Martin, you douchebag.

CurTis | 6/7/2008, 9:43 pm EST

Way better than X&Y, the leak was a GOOD one becuz i would’ve been too scared to buy it thinkin it might be sh1t, now i know it’s not sh1t so if i get around to it, i’ll buy it sooner or later. until then i’ll still listen to the leaked version along with their early stuff like “Rush of Blood to the Head” & “Parachutes”…& “Brothers & Sisters”…early classic material which is in bits and pieces on this new album. atleast it’s there!!

Bob | 6/7/2008, 11:23 pm EST

I’ve only digested three tracks, “Lost!” “Strawberry Swing” and “Lovers in Japan”, but I must say I’m favorably impressed.

They’ve grown a lot, there’s a lot of experimentation and new stuff going on. This is a big change for a band that recycled ‘Clocks’ as ‘Speed of Sound.’ Hopefully the other tracks hold up…

sticker14 | 6/7/2008, 11:39 pm EST

Will someone please explain how Coldplay sounds like Radiohead?

Andre.. | 6/7/2008, 11:51 pm EST

mmm.. i’m totally getting a hard u2 vibe here, but i like it.. so far i like death and all his friends most of all the songs..

Razornine | 6/7/2008, 11:55 pm EST

Coldplay sound like Coldplay, a fruity brit-pop band that appeals to 12-year-old girls and stay-at-home moms.

Jonathan | 6/8/2008, 12:12 am EST

the ’stay satisfied’ return loop on “yes” is brilliant.

There are new sounds, particularly more raw percussion & heavier guitar riffs, all over the place.

i. love. it. all.

Music...It Made Me | 6/8/2008, 12:21 am EST

Coldplay is classic. The “Cool Guys” may thing that Coldplay is a weak band because of their mellow sound but they are definately one of the greatest bands out there and one of the most original might i add.

Nelson | 6/8/2008, 12:44 am EST

Just because review sites like pitchfork dont usually bestow good ratings to anything other than radiohead (save for Beirut and Vampire Weekend) doesn;t make them good. Its excellent music that does. Radiohead makes kick ass music. Coldplay has just dropped an album with a single that, to quote a friend as she describes music, makes me want to have feelings. This is a different outlook. Get used to it pessimistic fucks of yore. Accept come songs, dont continuously blast coldplay with the same old tired argument that your mom likes coldplay or the rest of the tired fading battle tunes.

One note on making fun of coldplay, however, is that the fact that liking coldplay makes you gay, as noted by Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen, is a stroke of fucking genius.

a daft punk | 6/8/2008, 12:44 am EST

it’s good, I like and respect Coldplay, am a huge fan of Rush of Blood to the Head, amazing album, but at the same time I hear all their music I just think Radiohead and u2 have done all of these things before…”life in technicolor” for example=U2, nothing wrong with it, just an observation and an opinion, overall, good album.

bryan | 6/8/2008, 12:56 am EST

I have always been a huge fan. I enjoyed x and y but this album defiantly proves how amazing coldplay really is and exceeds my expecations

Thomas | 6/8/2008, 7:17 am EST

What is it with all this “… sound like this and that”. It’s music, for god’s sake. You like it – listen to it. You don’t like it – listen to something else. I guess it’s the “pop” thing. If it sounds good and you can’t stop singing along or tapping your foot – it must be bad! Come on! I haven’t really heard any of the new Coldplay – but I’m sure both my feet will be tapping when I do.
PS. If you can’t figure out what to listen to why don’t you try out “Bright Eyes”.

19 Ten | 6/8/2008, 9:23 am EST

Coldplay sucks because they are unoriginal, boring, whiny, write terrible lyrics, and put you to sleep. I love how people keep saying this new album is such a drastic change in direction when in fact it sounds like everything else they’ve already done. Colplay fans apparently don’t expect much from their band, “Oh, listen they used a different drum sound, that’s innovative.” I’ve never seen a band coast so far on pure hype. I’ve heard the new album and it doesn’t deserve success. It’s going to come and go and be forgotten and the small band of Colplay fanatics will shrivel up and disappear.

Frank L | 6/8/2008, 11:24 am EST

Hey Nelson, You better hope your heroes Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen never say coldplay sucks because then by your logic you would be forced to agree with them. That’s right folks, Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen, two pillars of astonishing intelligence and genius. WWSAPD What Would Seth And Paul Do.

Measure Up 2 | 6/8/2008, 11:26 am EST

Yeah, liking Coldplay doesn’t mean you’re gay. It just means your in touch with your feminine side. Nothing wrong with that.

sunzhu | 6/8/2008, 11:38 am EST

GOOD! GOOD! GOOD!

awful band | 6/8/2008, 12:45 pm EST

watered down crappy rock

Christiaan33 | 6/8/2008, 1:06 pm EST

this is shit.
i’m outside of the freaking united states of asses and i can’t listen to their new album?

way to go coldplay.

yep | 6/8/2008, 1:35 pm EST

It’s awesome. Fuck all the cynical viewpoints; every Coldplay album has melodies that put a smile on your face. Who cares if they sound “similar” (I don’t think so, but a lot of you out there think otherwise), they have to be the only band I can recall that tries really hard, sometimes too hard, to give goosebumps, and I have to respect that. Some bands are lazy at this, but Coldplay certainly is not one of them.

Can’t wait for the 17th. Already pre-ordered.

Steve | 6/8/2008, 3:42 pm EST

Coldplay is a great band! End of story! Nothing more to say! Except wait for the hate backlash to reverse any day now and all those that say “their watered down crap” to start changing their tune. Come on off down from you pedestals and remove your Nickleback tour shirts and burn them along with your Blink 182 ticket stubs. Wankers!

i still dont like rh | 6/8/2008, 7:43 pm EST

coldplay youve done it again excellent album and now youre much bigger in the usa i dont remember a uk band with a top 5 hot 100(may be the beatles).

schzzrf | 6/8/2008, 9:39 pm EST

Love it. Great job fellas.

Orlando | 6/8/2008, 11:28 pm EST

I haven’t listened to the new album, but Rush of Blood is their best so far. The other albums have too much filler.

Caiden | 6/8/2008, 11:37 pm EST

Cold plays new song “Viva la Vida” sends shivers down my spine..its that good, and whoever says Coldplay is watered down and unoriginal obviously lack the ability to recognize good music and awsome lyrics

Dissapointed with new stuff | 6/9/2008, 3:28 am EST

Coldplay’s first 3 albums may have been repetitive but they had great melodies, Martin’s trademark falsetto and big, bombastic hooks. This new stuff is just a big jumbled mess. Call me sentimental, but give me any tracks off “Parachutes”, “Rush of Blood to the Head” or “X&Y” over this over-reaching disaster.

jon | 6/9/2008, 10:24 am EST

so which song is this album’s re-written Clocks?

seriously, when will this band slither back to where it came from?

emily. | 6/9/2008, 11:01 am EST

great album. die-hard coldplay fans will notice a huge difference in the band’s direction but i still don’t think they ventured as far as they said they would.

Martin | 6/9/2008, 11:52 am EST

Wow! What an incredibly boring album. Not worth the money at all.

Coldpuke | 6/9/2008, 1:00 pm EST

I LOVE this band,,,,,they are THE BEST BAND IN THE WHLE WORLD. Not really, but it seems that unless you say something of the sort, RS will delete your post. Why, RS. Why have a posting board, only to cull it of “offensive” opinion? Honestly, these guys are exactly what is wrong with music these days. If Air Supply mixed up with Dave Matthews, maybe add in a little Panic at the Disco, and this is what you would get. Horr-a-ble.

Fozzie Bear | 6/9/2008, 2:46 pm EST

Just makes me long for the new U2 record. “Life in Technicolor”=”Where the Streets have No Name” “Cemeteries in London”=”Acrobat” etc etc. I love Coldplay but its almost pointless to review their record without starting it by saying “this great U2 knockoff”…. In “Violet Hill” he took the “banks became cathedrals” line directly from “The Playboy Mansion” on U2’s POP. I do like the new record, though.

4.5/5 stars | 6/9/2008, 3:29 pm EST

i notice the presence of brian eno in this album people dont forget that brian eno was the principal inffluence in the u2 sound, awesome album btw.

Joe | 6/9/2008, 4:36 pm EST

Eno caught lightning with Achtung Baby; every member of U2 at that time was charged up to the max, “ready for what’s next” so to speak…….I dont get that same sense with this record, although Eno’s ethereal fingerprints from “Unforgettable Fire” are all over Vida. I’ve been listening to it constantly at work since the stream became available.

tod | 6/9/2008, 4:51 pm EST

awesome album

Joe | 6/9/2008, 10:22 pm EST

Compared to Journey’s album “Revelations”, Viva la Vida is earthshakingly groundbreaking.

Kay | 6/10/2008, 3:58 pm EST

The new album is great! It certainly contains a darker yet vibrant tone than their previous albums. So far i am in love with “42,” “Lost,” cemeteries of London, Death and all his friends, Violet Hill and “Viva La Vida.” Its ironic that people express that they dislike Coldplay and have the “time” to listen to their music!

Victor | 6/10/2008, 11:28 pm EST

The album is good, not great. Still not clicking for me as every other previous album did since the first time i listened to it.

Too bad you’re not coming to mexico this tour, Sigur Ròs has taken your spot in my heart as best band ever.

ted | 6/11/2008, 5:36 pm EST

amazing album coldplay

Fred | 6/12/2008, 12:44 am EST

Coldplay is going down. That album is slow, sad and depressing. Sorry, I like the other ones but after Violet Hill, I don’t really catch others song so far but I do find ‘42′ and ‘Vida la vida loca’ might catch me later. If you’re a girl or a man trying be sweet over the summer I recommend the latest from Jack Johnson cause it’s happier over the summer.

dsong | 6/12/2008, 5:51 am EST

coldplay have discovered strings! arent they clever. I think if they were going to ‘go orchestral’ they could have used them a bit more colourfully, more change in harmony and texture. I enjoy listening to the album, and there are a few great tracks. But there a lot of cases where i feel there’s 3 minutes of the same thing (as if to make sure we remember the tune, or allow for future-tour-sing-alongs) before something interesting happens. Strawberry swing is the perfect example of this.
I also agree with the previous comment that they are very U2.
Some of the lyrics are great though on Vida la Viva, Lost and Violet hill.

Also- from starting out with the ‘intro track’ to give the impression the album might be a cohesive work of art, there seems to be little order of the tracks, or sense of progression, rather randomly placed.

You think they might have been able to resist the football chorus esque- Embrace style chorus on the last track. that annoys me.

this sucks!! | 6/12/2008, 12:43 pm EST

Loved all their stuff so far. But this…this is crap. It sounds like Idie myspace rock. There are a million bands on myspace that do this exact same garbage! I couldn’t even listen to the whole thing I was so depressed. radiohead make whiny rock but their good at it. That is what I expect from Radiohead but not from Coldplay. How are they going to pull these songs off live? If they can do that well when I see them live then I’ll re-think this album. But until then well I’ll be waiting for U2’s album in October. i know Brian Eno helped in that one. Hopefully he saved his good material for them. :)

me | 6/12/2008, 1:54 pm EST

I loved coldplay I have seen them live 6 times ut the VIVA LA VIDA album really sucks, it is depressing, boring and messy

4/5 | 6/12/2008, 7:24 pm EST

the same people keep on posting hahaha such a losers. awesome album btw.

Cheese | 6/12/2008, 7:48 pm EST

Absolute rubbish. Comparing it to Radiohead just doesn’t make sense. Maybe to the million other pop-rock bands out there who are into producing meaningless cheese.

What a disappointing album.

jr claghapper | 6/12/2008, 8:23 pm EST

I dig it times squared. It is a shot of Coldplay with an side of Eno.

You got to remember that Eno was bashed for Are We Not Men? We Are Devo!

Imagine the world without that album. I can’t do it.
U2 isn’t the only group to be changed by Brian.
Think of “My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts”
David Byrne & Brian Eno single handedly changed my entire outlook on music. It no longer was just 3 or 4 dudes in a garage with guitars to me after that.
I agree with the earlier comment that for the summer a killer offering is for sure.

Rain by Joe Jackson

Place Between Places by Lili Haydn

and the best for last!
Sigur Rós
Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust

I still haven’t been able to put down Andrew Bird’s Armchair Apocrypha from last year.

I see similarities in all these which means to me that the eclectics have it and the garage bands of the past.
Well that was the past now wasn’t it!

Craigus1980 | 6/12/2008, 8:25 pm EST

FINALLY!!! The dark and interesting album Coldplay have been promising since “Parachutes”…

Yes, it’s a definite departure from “rush of blood to the head” and “X&Y” but on both of those albums it always felt like they were restraining themselves, holding back and not letting their personalities shine through. On Viva la Vida we get a glimpse at what Martin and the band are actually capable of… A cohesive concept album with solid melodies, dark undertones and stories that nearly drown you in the depths of despair and brokenness before rushing you to the surface allowing you to take in huge lung-fulls of air!

It’s sure to divide (fans especially), but for me, I was giving Coldplay one last chance to find a place in my heart (and my iTunes collection!) and they came through… Viva la Vida!

JAmes Girouard | 6/13/2008, 8:33 pm EST

I can’t believe how fucking bad Coldplay’s new album is

They write depressing music I used to enjoy

But this Experimental Mess of a album

is the worst thing to come out of the music industry for years…

They sound EXACTLY like U2 disgusting UNORIGINAL and track 7 Sounds like

U2 thn Radiohead Paraniod Andriod Esque then back to U2 with Springsteen

Im A Musician and I am soo Dissappointed in this Effort… The only track I sorda like it thier Title track since it’s thier style hah
But thats the only really best Produced song
the Rest sound Live an Horrible

They need to seriosuly quit making music
or stop copying very good respected artists
They pulled a Paris Hilton when she put out her piece of crap that copied Gwen Stefani

Good God I Don’t see how hard is it to be
original….It is funny cuz they had a style
Depressing Good Rock Music
but Now they’ve done themselves in

and probably will get some REAL Negeitive Feedback Those critics are harsh

James

The Truth Hurts | 6/13/2008, 9:22 pm EST

1/5 Stars This Album is Horrible

It copies U2, Radiohead and even touches on Springsteen

Good Lord can’t Musicians be Original???

Also….

They had a sound and a unique sound

but now…..

Let us just kick that to the trash

Coldplay officially sucks

Chit-Chatty | 6/13/2008, 11:54 pm EST

ok everyone i generally like coldplay,u2,radiohead,and all kinds of other music in range from musicals to….heavy metal! So if you like the music you like it if you don’t you don’t.honestly i think that song viva la vida is very beautifully written. Its metaphoric and much like peotry.Generally tha album is good. Music is music like it or don’t…shit happens get over it.

whatamess | 6/15/2008, 7:24 am EST

really really really disappointed……………… ..
im really sorry coldplay but you fukd up this one. try again in 3 years time?

Tim | 6/19/2008, 11:10 am EST

You get what you get these days

Ktina | 6/19/2008, 12:53 pm EST

This cd is a bit of a disappointment, but it’s growing on me. Definitely different from the rest of their stuff, but that’s not bad. If there’s one constant thing, it’s change. Coldplay remains the greatest band of our time, in my opinion. They are brilliant.

Lisa | 6/22/2008, 11:24 am EST

i found it overly-religious.

absolute garbage | 6/22/2008, 11:53 pm EST

ive been a fan up until this album. absolute laugh fest at how they’re trying to be deep, intelligent or true musicians. Dont waste your money on this one, or any coldplay album in the future for that matter. True musicians will know this is garbage, and morons will be impressed.

Always a Fan | 6/26/2008, 11:37 pm EST

The second I pushed play for Coldplay’s album, I was hooked. I believe this album is amazing however, I wish there were at least two more songs. I love how the songs flow into one another and are intertwined.
Coldplay is a genius and when as any musician been completely original? Aren’t we all influenced by those we admire? Whatever they were trying to create, they did very well and even if you are disappointed with their album, you shouldn’t expect them to put out the same thing every time. Everyone needs to branch out, take a risk and that is why I love Coldplay. They took a risk and I absolutely love it!

I can tell it’s every song has been well thought out. So, take it for what it is worth.

polly | 12/9/2008, 5:20 pm EST

well if the song was coppied then why dont they show the lyrics to any one and i cant find the song lyrics so if this song really exists then why dont they let any one see then to prove it

polly | 12/9/2008, 5:23 pm EST

i cant find the lyrics to this song tht the rolling stones say tht coldplay coppied. then why dont they show the lyrics to anyone to prove it cuz tht wood clear thing up for alot of ppl!!! so u mite wanna take tht into concideration… thank u for ur time lol

hahahahah | 4/4/2009, 4:44 am EST

You alla say they suck bla bla bla bla bla, they have made millions it will still make, so the base thing is to just totaly ignore them.

Yes I believe they have copied and have not been innovative at all t this album (I still like old songs they have)

Nickster | 9/20/2009, 11:26 am EST

I just saw Coldplay in concert last night in London and while I loved the old stuff, the new album is very scrambled and I was bored in places while Chris was belting it out. In my opinion bands tend to get too experimental and pretentious when they get big rather than sticking too their pure roots.
