Yes Cancel Anniversary Tour After Singer’s Respiratory Failure

6/5/08, 9:15 am EST

Prog-rock kings Yes have been forced to cancel their entire 40th anniversary summer tour because vocalist Jon Anderson has health problems. Last month, Anderson was taken to the hospital with an asthma attack. Doctors then diagnosed the vocalist with acute respiratory failure and recommended he rest for at least six months. “In the wake of my recent respiratory attack, doctors have advised me to spend the coming months resting and recovering,” Anderson said. “I’d like everyone know how deeply disappointed I am by this turn of events.” No rescheduled dates have been announced. Also, the live album documenting the tour has obviously been scrapped.

Been a Yes fan for over 25 years. I have been captured by thier musicianship and colorful lyrics since The Tales of the Typographic tour. I felt then that Jon was an exceptional spiritual man and his ability to translate his gift to an audience was extrodinary.
I would like to thank Jon for his genuine commitment to his Yes fans. And would like to express my sincern concern for his current health problems. I saw Jon in concert in March. I myself have been feeling down due to personal life changes in health. I would like to tell Jon you will be fine. In March Jon kindly took the time to talk to me. Giving me simple encouraging words. Changes. With changes, other changes come. It is the majesty of life. All children of light pray for you. And our life guides nerver really abandon us. In this way we stay connected. With a little more insight and a greater sense of the forces and mystery of life itself. Hoping that the lightnesss of being will guide you through this challening time.

Joanna

To say that one guitarist is the second best only comes from the polls in guitar magazines, that’s stupidity at its best. Every guitar player has his merits and cannot be compared to any one else’s.

Yo -anyone who goes to these concerts is a LOSER!!!
This group is finished!-

Yes music is methaphisic and unique , from 70’s never listened other bands to upgrade their works. But just listened bands to inspiring or copy.

Everyone needs to let JON rest for awhile, withot any stress. I am in the medical profession, and can tell you that “Respiratory Attacks”, are a serious thing. Without proper rest, and proper Meds, this can lead to a fatal pnemmonia, so let’s all let JON be. I would be glad to consult woth his Medical Team if needed.

Tony from UK | 10/25/2008, 1:32 pm EST

To Biker Bill and Jerry, what’s that got to do with it. This wasn’t an article about who do you think is best, the Who or Yes, if you don’t like ‘em don’t go. Thousands will!! Good luck to Jon in getting better, there’s no one like you as far as Yes fans are concerned. From a Yes Fan of 35 years!! (not my age!!!)

Biker Bill | 10/19/2008, 12:33 am EST

Forget about the YES mess, The WHO are on tour!, now that’s a real band!

Jerry | 10/19/2008, 12:31 am EST

I think most rock fans have had enough of YES, you would be better served by spending the money on the new WHO tour, and get a eal lead singer by the name of Roger Daltrey

Rick Edwards, Louisville | 10/16/2008, 6:50 pm EST

I’ve seen YES 13 times. Like another poster, I too saw ASIA in Indy, this Summer. I saw Steve Howe 3 times two Summers ago. (Twice from the front row.) I had tickets for 3 summer shows that just got canceled.
I’ve seen YES with a replacement for Howe. I’ve seen YES with a replacement for Wakeman. I’ve seen YES with a replacement for Anderson. And, I’ve seen YES with a replacement for White.
I’ve seen YES “in the round”. I’ve seen YES do all acoustic sets! I have tics for 4 upcoming shows, Columbus, Cincy, Louisville, and Nashville.
I’ve played guitar for over 40 years. No one replaces John Anderson. But, I’m still delirious about the upcoming shows. The thing I’m most happy about, is that my daughter is going to the Louisville show with me.
Thank you God for blessing my life with music, and YES.
Peace everyone. Say hello to me at the shows. I’ll have a smile on my face from ear to ear!

cs | 10/12/2008, 10:16 pm EST

i bought yes tickets for the nov 5 concert at massey hall. i didn’t know til my friend told me that jon wouldn’t be singing. i am a bit disappointed because he is so much a part of the sound of yes. but i will go regardless, i’m a huge fan. hope you will entertain us all again soooon, jon. take care.

Seen Yes 1st at JFK-Philly,1976, then 78,79,80,82,84,89,90,92,95,99, 2000,2002,2004, probably seen the good old boys i almost every variation of YES or ABWH, solo work tours and constantly listen to all of the guys work. ANderson and Wakeman have soooo much material outside of the band YES and Yes itself just puts it all together for so many, we all need another tour, even if it is called the retirement tour. We do not care we just need it with the classic lineup. No subs or sound a-likes
& Get in touch with Peter Gabriel’s Production company… Oh that tour would be awesome!Get well Jon!

Rick M. | 6/15/2008, 5:44 pm EST

Take care of it, Jon. You’ve brought joy and understanding of the esoteric to millions of people. Your life’s work has been good work. If you must stop, stop! If you can continue, do it! But now, just take care of it.
Peace and love!

Dan O'Brien | 6/15/2008, 1:04 pm EST

Get well soon Jon and follow doctors orders!

Ranyart | 6/14/2008, 4:15 pm EST

Yes once released a song called “The Ancient”. I wondered what it was about - now I think it’s about Yes!
Just kidding - they are one of the great bands who were dissed by RS because they liked to play a lot of notes. I’d think RS would love them as Jon Anderson is very anti-Republican

Jon is the roxxor! | 6/14/2008, 3:40 pm EST

Get well soon Jon! Mellow out and groove with nature this summer. The world needs you and your music so badly right now, so take care of yourself. I love ya, you know it.

Yesfan37 | 6/13/2008, 7:42 pm EST

Take care of yourself Jon, Us YESheads will be here when you are ready to shine once again!
Best wishes always!

Mark B | 6/13/2008, 6:11 pm EST

Hey TooleMan - Where did you hear about Anderson’s bankruptcy? Can you point me to a website that has a story on this? It’s hard to believe a rock star of Jon’s stature would ever have to take such extreme measures! I mean Yes had to have made millions and millions over the span of their careers, right?

TheTooleMan | 6/13/2008, 11:57 am EST

Part of the reason for Jon’s ill health may be the overly-long Yes tour of 2002-2004. I imagine that these guys, now all middle-age-plus, need the bucks to pay for health care for other infirmities. Jon, for one, broke his back several years ago, causing another tour to be delayed. He also declared bankruptcy; one of the leading reasons why people go bankrupt is they are unable to pay their exorbitant medical bills. Considering our health care and insurance system in the US, he may need to stay on the road until he drops dead, just to stay ahead of his creditors. (What a sad commentary on our society!)

Here’s to Jon and his quick recovery.

Magickalworld | 6/11/2008, 9:32 pm EST

Jon, Sending you lots of love and healing from Buffalo, NY. We love what you play Olias!! Love and Laughter cures anything!! :-)

Rael Floyd | 6/11/2008, 7:41 pm EST

Jon get well soon….I’m a big fan of YES….I saw ASIA like 2 months ago it was great but YES does it better…Oh for u Prog-rock haters go home and listen to ur dumb rock like MCR and fall out boy

DaveyO | 6/10/2008, 12:19 pm EST

Kinda’ goes back to the old saying “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all”. Non Yes fans shouldn’t even be posting comments here. Good luck Jon. Hope to see you and the boys back out on the road very soon!

Johnny Tronny | 6/9/2008, 12:46 pm EST

Well…get well Johnny!
Jake probably saw the Drama tour, which wasn’t bad, but not good at all. Kurt’s Corpse sounds like a Nirvana head…good luck to him. I like Nirvana, but only in small doses, I get bored very easily by them…that’s why I like bands like Yes…way more colorful and interesting…but I do not like most prog such as Dream Theater. Prog can also be uninspired and dull.

ahh well,I turned 40 this year on the 6th and was given tickets to see them in hershey park, guess it was not ta be, been a huge yes fan most of my life and I hope to see them play again, GET WELL SOON JON!!!!

Chris Squire | 6/8/2008, 8:21 am EST

Jake Burns & Kurt’s Corpse - I guess you are too musically shallow to appreciate great bands like Yes.Why don’t you just lock yourself in a room with your AC/DC records and keep your negative comments in there with you!

Wes | 6/7/2008, 8:07 pm EST

Jon-Get well soon! When you’re hurtin’, we’re hurtin’. Love,Your millions of dedicated fans.
Jake - terribly sorry you didn’t enjoy the “cocert”. You’re obviously not a true Yes fan…

aTickle | 6/6/2008, 6:27 pm EST

Silly Vain Umbilical Freak:

HE has a sense of humor far beyond what any of you whom profess to understand HIM can even wrap your kooky scary judgemental brains around.
GOD make Jon better or I’ll pee in your Cheerios. Ah-Frickin-Men!

Twin Built | 6/6/2008, 10:45 am EST

Why these guys thought they could dither around for 3 years between tours to wait for the creative stars to align is anyone’s guess. That doesn’t seem like a luxury you can afford at age 60.

SVUF | 6/6/2008, 10:23 am EST

Re: Moonshine
May I ask what kind of prayer was that? Also, you do not need to say profane words to HIM! Never tempt or anger The Good Lord Himself! A simple prayer to Jon Anderson would do! Anyway, get well Jon!! May The Good Lord bless you with the strength to come back with Yes to tour!!

thomsen | 6/6/2008, 1:24 am EST

I saw YES in Omaha, August 1984. Unforgettable.

JD | 6/5/2008, 5:36 pm EST

Saw em in the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and they were always good. Get healthy, Jon, and get out there for the 41st

Yes-A-Wish Tickle | 6/5/2008, 3:40 pm EST

Jon- well, Buster, we’re certainly getting older, eh?

It was amazing there was even a 40th Anniversary considered.

If you find yourself at the Gates of Delirium, send a Instant Karma to me, initial it with Love and Care, yourself.

Did we really count to one hundred?

Peace…you guys are some of the best EVER…. music made.

Brett | 6/5/2008, 3:11 pm EST

Saw Jon a few weeks ago playing with the School of Rock All-Stars…amazing show. Get well Jon…and let’s get YES in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!!!

Moonshine | 6/5/2008, 2:06 pm EST

Hello God, we want you to bless Jon Anderson and help him on the road to recovery. I know you’re really with that China Quake and Iraq war and rampant poverty and homelessness throughout the world, but you need to bless Jon Anderson so he can go back on tour dammit! What kind of God are you?

Jon | 6/5/2008, 1:35 pm EST

Saw Yes in 2000 at Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium; Flawless. Anderson sang as if he were in his 20s. Get well, Jon.

rfmitch67 | 6/5/2008, 1:34 pm EST

One of the GREATEST bands of all time….and Steve Howe is the best living guitar player. Period.
Get Well, Jon!!!!

Jon G. | 6/5/2008, 1:33 pm EST

Saw them in `00 in Denver, and they were flawless. Anderson’s voice is a freak of nature. Get well, Jon, and God bless.

Kurt's Corpse | 6/5/2008, 1:14 pm EST

one of the all-time worst bands in history.

bowieno | 6/5/2008, 1:10 pm EST

get well Jon! You are a good soul brother! Rest Easy. Yes MSG 2004 at the end of And You & I. Best Live Event I ever witnessed! Such positive power!

jeff | 6/5/2008, 12:28 pm EST

disappointing, i was looking forward to that show! hope jon feels better and i hope they use the time to write an album already!

MikeZ. | 6/5/2008, 12:15 pm EST

Get well Jon,a LOT of us care about you.

Pork Chop | 6/5/2008, 12:11 pm EST

I guess this means that the Yes tour is now a No tour.

Brien Comerford | 6/5/2008, 11:46 am EST

Yes guitarist Steve Howe is arguably the second greatest guitarist in music. He supremely masters electric, acoustic and pedal steel guitars. Jeff Beck happens to be the world’s greatest guitarist, especially, live in concert.

Josh | 6/5/2008, 11:21 am EST

Jon Anderson wasn’t in the band around 1980…that would have been the Drama tour with Trevor Horn singing. Get well, Jon! And hopefully TicketMaster will make the refund process painless (haha).

Rusty | 6/5/2008, 10:50 am EST

I saw them in the late 1980s and enjoyed it. These guys are some seriously good musicians.

Jake Burns | 6/5/2008, 10:04 am EST

concerts

Jake Burns | 6/5/2008, 10:04 am EST

Of my 300 cocerts, Yes in Champaign, Illinois (about 1980) was easily the worst. Take a few more years off boys!
