Van Halen Reunion Tour Grosses $93 Million

6/5/08, 2:47 pm EST

It was a tumultuous ride that few expected would last, but the vanhalenVan Halen sorta-reunion tour came to a close June 2nd in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In the end, the tour grossed $93 million and played to nearly a million fans over the course of 74 shows. In retrospect, it wasn’t the ego or antics of David Lee Roth but Eddie Van Halen’s pre-jaunt rehab stay and March health issues that nearly submarined the tour. The shows marked the first time that Roth fronted the band in 23 years (though without bass player Michael Anthony, the original lineup remains estranged since 1985), and VH’s handlers say it was the most successful tour of the long-running group’s career.

Where's the Love, Man | 6/24/2009, 2:24 pm EST

What are VH thinking now? Set ‘em up and knock ‘em down again. now that Valerie’s not around to nag, hit the road with Diamond Dave and make it happen. There are fans from Maine to Alaska that will fill the seats, and we need the rich history of un-pussified rock and roll. Please strap it on again, invite the A-Dog (who, by thw way, gives Van Halen their distinctive sound with his awesome background vocals - don’t kid yourself; he’s an integral part of the magic mix), and hit the road man. We’ll be here to share the love and line everyone’s pockets. We miss you.

Sure it would have been great to see the 4 original band members… but I can’t remember another concert that I sang EVERY SONG from start to finish and knew ALL THE WORDS!!! Greatest show ever! The crowd at MSG was insane… EVERYONE knew the words. Made the night that much more legendary. It was great to hear the soundtrack of my youth… LIVE!!!

Like it or lump it, the band is the bomb WITHOUT Mike. None you of you non fan dinks were crying when we did without DAVE for 20 years. I for one don’t care. Dave is back and the band is awesome once more!!

Dirty Duck DeFino | 7/24/2008, 11:00 am EST

Enough of the michael anthony crap already. He chose his path with sammy and now the other half is selling 20-50 tickets a show :/
ANYWAY! Saw the MIGHTY VH WITH ROTH back in november abd it was stellar! The energy was off the hook and the setlist was very impressive. I had one of the BEST times of my life that night…one of the BEST concerts i’ve ever seen…period! The boys are back and THANK YOU WOLFIE for making it happen! LONG LIVE CLASSIC VAN HALEN!
Sammy who? ;)

RATSALADE | 7/14/2008, 7:28 am EST

Mike has to come back… Wolfie did a great job, but if your able go original (YOU HAVE TO) The fans deserve it. After all, I didn’t get to pay 3/4 of my ticket price when I saw them in Hershey, Pa.

Mike… dis Sammy and come make some real $$$

#1 fan of all time (don’t question it) J.Stump

I took my 9 year old son to his first concert on May 9th and we saw a great show in Atlantic City, New Jersey. After the first set a stage hand gave my son a guitar pic and confirmed it was from Eddy Van Halen! He was thrilled and he still has the pic and we are going to frame it with the pair of tickets! JD FROM TINTON FALLS, NEW JERSEY

Props to Wolfie !!! Halfway thru the first song, all doubt was long gone. The young kid was holding it down from start to end. Great Job, Great Show in Washington D.C. !!! How about that summer/fall tour ???

That’s my 6TH Van Halen concert I attended since 1978.

Dr. Ralph | 6/8/2008, 7:32 pm EST

Why all this Wolfgang hate? If it wasn’t for Wolfie, Ed would still be a strung out has been… his son is the only reason they are back and every last one of you should kiss his ax.

GasMan | 6/8/2008, 12:06 am EST

I totally agree that all stellar bands without the original members are a shadow of once was, close but no cigar. It is OK for Big Daddie Ed to throw Wolfie a bone, but to continue with him as an official band member … Not! Michael or any original member of any band should continue to be a member until they choose to retire or die whichever comes first. I also agree that David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar are both the right fit for Van Halen, they just bring something a little different to the band. Keep On Rockin’

Jabe | 6/7/2008, 8:22 pm EST

I have to agree that without Michael Anthony, this tour does’nt have the bang it would have.Remember, we’re not talking about Cinderella, Warrant,or Huey Lewis, where the original line-up would not matter. Only the most killer bands of all time is when it REALLY matters. On top of how aggravating it already is, all the members are ALIVE.Look at all the great bands that are doomed forever for this opportunity:LED ZEPPELIN,THE WHO,QUEEN,and THE DOORS.

Who cares about Michael Anthony? He probably is, and should be, happy that he’s not selling used cars or something.

van halen can lick my balls

unreal | 6/6/2008, 2:47 pm EST

Van Halen is definitely in the Top 3 Rock Bands of ALL TIME,…( along with Led Zeppelin and AC/DC), I don’t care if it’s Sammy or Diamond Dave.Long live these Legends of Rock! I am looking forward to their next Road trip!

Mr. Poopypants | 6/6/2008, 11:48 am EST

Who knew the fat kid in the band was actually that good? Looks like he has a bright musical career ahead of him.

Jeff | 6/6/2008, 12:15 am EST

How about actually singing your backup vocals, Ed and Wolfie?

Backing tracks are for Britney Spears and Disturbed. NOT Van Halen.

Re: Robert

“Van Halen without Michael Anthony is not Van Halen. And if you don’t get that, then you don’t get what made Van Halen mighty”

No offense man, i think michael anthony contributed greatly to the band as well. However, Eddie’s guitar mastery is what made the band mighty. Of course their were other elements and people to make the group work but eddie was/is really the driving force of the band.

Big Mike | 6/5/2008, 10:14 pm EST

I saw these guys back in Dec. and they were fantastic. I’m really looking forward to a new record!

Robert | 6/5/2008, 9:39 pm EST

Van Halen without Michael Anthony is not Van Halen. And if you don’t get that, then you don’t get what made Van Halen mighty.

Big Deal

I had a great time | 6/5/2008, 7:19 pm EST

i saw the 5th show of their tour and they were a great, me and my 2 friends were 15 feet from the stage and i will never forget it.

break | 6/5/2008, 7:10 pm EST

“cmon dave give me a break.”
One break coming up…

Stellar | 6/5/2008, 5:38 pm EST

I saw them live and they were stellar. 22 songs. 3 solos (even wolfie got one) over two hours-the crowd including myself were singing along to every song and getting all revved up. DLR still has the humor and the showmanship. Eddie’s still got the unrivaled guitar skill that has made him a legend. Alex van halen still plays that hot for teacher intro like it’s 1984. And while i was disapointed that michael anthony was not in the lineup for the reunion, wolfie surprised me by playing really well. I hope the rest of the fans who attended one of their concerts this year had the same experience. Van Halen is the greatest rock band in my book. Maybe the next step would be a reunion album but if not this is a fitting close to the van halen legacy.
