New Kids on the Block Are Back, With More Boy Bands on the Way

6/4/08, 11:20 am EST

With album sales bottoming out and the music industry at a crossroads, some labels are starting to turn to a familiar model to try to get the numbers back up. Inspired by the return of New Kids on the Block and the success of High School Musical, labels will be tapping back into the boy band market, an area that has been dead silent since the breakup of ‘NSYNC. Click below for more on the new generation of boy bands, including how this new crop of dudes will operate differently from the collectives of the Backstreet era.

The NKOTB reunion is a testament to dedication (both from fans and the group), long-lasting talent, production, collaboration and incredible appreciation for what these guys did in their hay-day. And for what they have done again almost 20 yrs later !!!

Unbelievable accomplishment.

I hated these guys back in the day. But now as a grown man I see that these guys started a new style of music still being copied today. 70 million records sold! 1 billion in sale’s in five years, thats pretty good. On top of that they say its the biggest come back in music. No other band gets the same attention from critic and haters. I heard the CD and its O.K. (B-)

THE BLOCK ARE BACK!! Thats good enough for me, forget the others.

I agree 100%!!! I have seen Varsity Fanclun dance, they’re incredible and it helps that Ryan Tedder from One Republic wrote songs on their album. I see those kids hitting the jackpot

kenny | 6/6/2008, 7:07 pm EST

I think Varsity Fanclub will be the next Nsync, check out their youtube performance, those kids can dance their asses off, geez

We don’t need any more boy bands! The first and best boy , New Kids On The Block are back!! That is enough for everyone. No other boy band would be able to come back after 15 years and be welcomed the way they are. I am so happy that they are back!!

You deleted my comment because I criticized RS for helping push boy bands NOT because it was off-topic.

i dont have much to say about this accept that i didn’t like boybands when i supposed to and i can’t see myself likeing them now…ew

I don’t hope for a new wave of boy bands…but welcome the return of New Kids on the Block! Their music was fun and the members who have released solo music (3 of the 5) have become even stronger singers/songwriters since their split. I can’t wait to see what else they have in store for their new album.

NKOTB Fan | 6/5/2008, 8:15 pm EST

I am thrilled that they are back! Their new songs are great and I for one will shell out the cash to see them in concert.

Lacey | 6/5/2008, 7:48 pm EST

Personally I think they’re geniuses to wait until their fans were late 30s-early 40s to do a reunion. Now all the fans all are re-living their youth no matter what the co$t. cha-ching!
NKOTB still look a hell of lot better than most guys their age.

This will not work. The teenagers who are the audience for this have been downloading free music since they were 12. They don’t have a credit card, so they don’t use i-tunes to buy music. They also don’t have $75 for tickets for these reunion tours. Maybe they will sell some posters and a lunchbox, but I think this shows how screwed up this industry has become.

Of course the REASON the industry is dying is because they went for the quick dollar in the late 1990’s with the fluff-pop instead of investing in artists that would have a lasting impact (and a catalog that would continue to sell)

Remember, in the late 1990’s a label would DROP an artist for not selling 100,000 units of their last CD. Many of those artists have become successful on their own

Maybe All 4 One and New Edition can make a comeback. I’d rather see aging and established boybands than any new crappy cookie cutter boybands that will only be flavours of the month. At least the New Kids are original.

Tyles | 6/4/2008, 11:06 pm EST

So… it’s come to this… *sigh*

Jake Works | 6/4/2008, 4:03 pm EST

I’m not sure whether or not exuberance, dread, or glee is in line right now.

Gwen | 6/4/2008, 2:29 pm EST

I’m afraid Swingline, that I have to agree with you. Not only Tokyo Hotel fits into that category but mcr and fallout boy as well. But even though I am a teenager, I turn the vollume off everytime I see those bands.

Swingline | 6/4/2008, 2:04 pm EST

Denton,

The answer to your question is absolutely yes. Look at this Tokio Hotel group with the German Anime wannabe as the lead singer. Comments come flying in all over the place about this band, and the same people would be there if these guys were doing synchronized dancing over a club beat.
Pop music is more about the shiny box on the outside than what’s underneath.
The teenagers they’re marketing to just want to belong to the hot fad, even if it’s tone-def frogs belching in unison over a kazoo. If it has shiny colors and a good marketing scheme, that’s usually enough to make some money off of.

Zach | 6/4/2008, 1:48 pm EST

So are New Kids on the Block going to change their name to [insert punchline]?

Denton | 6/4/2008, 1:10 pm EST

Are there that many mentally retarded people in this country to financially support another wave of boy bands?

I’m not calling names…I honestly cannot imagine any other group of people other than the mentally disabled who might actually listen to, and enjoy, this horrible music.

Professor Ding Dong | 6/4/2008, 11:57 am EST

All right! This is just what the music industry needs and that’s a reemergence of boy bands! Excellent. Album sales are now going to sky rocket and this will most definitely create a positive impact on rock and roll! Yeeeahh aaiiighht!
