U2 Add Rarities, Live Tracks and B-Sides to Reissues

6/3/08, 5:10 pm EST

The reissues of U2’s first three albums — Boy, October and War — will each contain discs full of rarities and live performances as well as B-sides from the era. Boy will be accompanied by three unreleased songs “Speed of Life,” “Cartoon World” and “Saturday Night,” along with a different mix of “I Will Follow.” Live performances from the Hammersmith Palais and the Paradise Theater in Boston will join October, while War will feature the unreleased track “Angels Too Tied to the Ground” and a bunch of remixes of “New Years Day” and “Two Hearts Beat as One.” All three deluxe editions will be out on July 22nd.

U2 are great. I just listened to the October bonus disc and it totally kicks. The live cuts and BBC radio cuts are strong. It reminds me of why I like U2. Like R.E.M., they started out as enthusiastic novices and have continued to grow artistically. At the same time, they haven’t forgotten their roots. So they were a little unsure on October. Big deal. It was only their second album. Actually, musically, it is pretty good. The band was tight. The Edge really came into his own as a guitarist here. It’s just the band didn’t have many proper songs to hang all this great music on at the time. Fire, Gloria and Tomorrow are great. Also, the bonus non-L.P. single A Celebration is a nice inclusion. It’s hard to find for most fans.

As for releasing bonus tracks because they are out of ideas. That’s bogus. Almost every good band in the rock era has had remastered versions of its albums released, often with bonus tracks. U2 is hardly the first band to do that. The Stones’ catalog has been through several rereleases and upgrades. Get off the high horse.

Also, the moron who wrote that about the Clash ripping off the Ramones obviously hasn’t listened to either band much. The two had completely different musical approaches. They shared a punk, DIY attitude (and not-so-secret ambitions to succeed)but the Ramones drew inspiration mostly from ’60s pop/rock, while the Clash had its roots more in the garage/bar band scene and Brit rockers like Kinks/Small Faces/Stones. If the Clash drew inspiration from the Ramones it was more from their spirit than sound.

The clash ripped off The Ramones like every other copycat Brit punk wannabe.

Hello I am 8 years old and I be in 3rd grade. I like U2 and they be better than Coldplay. My band is better than your band. Hah hah. Whatever U2 put out it be good no matter what. I don’t know what they mean by remix, but if it done by U2, then it gotta be good. If you listen to the Coldplay than you stink. ;-)

Music Guy | 6/4/2008, 1:54 pm EST

So U2 wants to do reissues. A lot of bands do reissues. Some of us are actually looking forward to them. No one says you have to buy them or like the band.

And what’s wrong with liking Coldplay anyway? Listen to who you want, but why down others for liking someone? What is this grade school?

Kim | 6/4/2008, 1:42 pm EST

U2 totally ROCK! People who don’t like them have no ear for great music. I, like their millions of fans all over the world, hope and pray that they NEVER go away. Their re-issues are way better than most “new” music coming out now.

Ramone | 6/4/2008, 10:25 am EST

Cecil,,,,,I dont think you could find a single “kid” who likes Coldplay, let alone “most” of them.

Roger | 6/4/2008, 8:50 am EST

So, No unforgettable Fire Re-issue?

“Why is there all this hatred toward U2?” In a word–jealousy. They can actually PLAY their instruments, compose great songs and perform them with power and intensity. What other band, except perhaps the Stones, could pull off a concert movie like “U2-3D?”

Cecil Jacobson | 6/4/2008, 6:30 am EST

I think it’s great. Too bad most kids will think “now the old guys are trying to sound like Coldplay”

ken | 6/3/2008, 9:44 pm EST

why is there all this hatred towards U2, i can think of many other bands more deserving of all this negativity! they do take too long between lp’s, but that could be said about a lot of people these days…

Dan | 6/3/2008, 8:20 pm EST

At this point, U2 have pretty much run out of new ideas. So they re-release everything possible to fill the 4 to 6 year gap between new CD releases.Ever since 1993`s Zooropa,U2 releases a new CD once every 4 years, this time it`s going to take them more than 4 years.

kj | 6/3/2008, 8:00 pm EST

u2 blows me…….im sick of everybody worshiping this band that has been talentless since the eighties……..they are crap hole…………?

JohnnyD | 6/3/2008, 7:13 pm EST

They should just re-record October all together. Do it live in the studio, track for track. Can’t sound any worse then the original…

Dave | 6/3/2008, 6:48 pm EST

Presumably because they are still one of the biggest groups in the world, sell bazillions of records, and have substantive content in their compositions? Of course, I can’t vouch for “Uno, dos, tres, catorce” but still….

Buck Fush | 6/3/2008, 6:47 pm EST

It’s way overdue.

Matt Bross | 6/3/2008, 6:07 pm EST

Big Deal, why won’t these guys just go away
