Bo Diddley Dead at Age 79

6/2/08, 12:08 pm EST

Bo Diddley, one of the founding fathers of rock and roll, died today in his home in Archer, Florida, where he had lived for 20 years. The cause was heart failure, according to a spokesperson. Diddley performed live until May 2007, when he suffered a stroke; three months later, in August, he also suffered a heart attack. The spokesperson said that he was surrounded by family and friends when he died. Public and private services are scheduled for this weekend.

In the summer of 2005, Rolling Stone writer Neil Strauss caught up with Diddley for the magazine’s last major feature on him, the award-winning “Indestructible Beat of Bo Diddley.”

Bo Diddley’s an Angel now. I loved his music from the first time I heard it back in ‘63 in England during the blues and rhythmn and blues explosion - thanks to the Rolling Stones who loved him too. Rest in peace Bo, you’ve earned it and thanks for your life and your music, what a great legacy. Keep the faith, guys, play his music and rock on….

laura hutzler | 6/6/2008, 5:30 pm EST

Why woould anybody be glad that this muscial great is dead? Thank goodness we shall have his recordings to preserve his memory. He was a musical master, and I am sad that he is gone.

lindalu , Tampa | 6/5/2008, 3:39 pm EST

Bo Diddley- visited his “farm” in florida, around 24 years ago. Our radio station was trying to get him to play for us. He invited us into his home, talked with us, took us in the barn-music building- where his daughter was practicing. We were in the room for awhile, his daughter yells
“diddley daddy isn’t the same without you daddy” get your guitar!
At that point he opened his case, brought out his guitar and played with her. We brought him to our station in 1985- picked him up in a 1956 limo…he was on a high. as were we….the greatest guitar player ever—what a musician, what a man!!- RIP Bo - lindalu

Comedy Killer | 6/5/2008, 9:04 am EST

the word “Tinkerbell” is offensive?

Gimme a break. You guys need to lighten the hell up!

But it’s totally fine to say that they’re glad that someone’s dead.

People priorities . . . I just don’t know.

jwiseman | 6/3/2008, 1:10 pm EST

Pressure is on - Bo BETTER be your next cover, RS, your credibility is at stake. One of the founders has fallen.Do your job and honor him appropriately if you’re still a rock and roll magazine.

mollyblades | 6/3/2008, 11:53 am EST

The real King of Rock n Roll ain’t no white boy, but he is, alas, no longer with us. Rest always in the bosom of the Goddess, and in our memories, Mr. Diddly, Sir. You are missed . . . .

One hell of a giant in rock ‘n’ roll. He was a true genius and a very kind person, too. I met him about 10 years ago when he came through town, and he was a friendly, gracious gentleman. Definitely one of the best that ever was. You will missed. God bless you, Bo Diddley.

ORIGINATOR | 6/2/2008, 3:27 pm EST

Bo was The Originator.

He was the daddy to all of the music I revere.

Godspeed and rest well. You’ve earned it.

Give us a shout from the great beyond.

Other Brother Darryl | 6/2/2008, 2:15 pm EST

He is/was THE founder of Rock N Roll.
And he (like so many artists)was not appreciated nearly enough in his lifetime. I’m so sad for that.

jim | 6/2/2008, 2:00 pm EST

I saw Bo perform in the 1950’s in a segregated Armory in Johnson City, Tennessee. There were only a hand full of white folks in the audience, mostly teenagers, including myself. He brought the house down. I always thought he was one of the GREATS. RIP my man, you have made your mark on this good earth.

Mike Collins | 6/2/2008, 1:59 pm EST

Do realize how much rock and roll would never have happened if it wasn’t for Bo?
To this day, no first hearing of a song has blown me away like the first time I heard “Roadrunner.”
God rest his soul.

Margaret Tobelman | 6/2/2008, 1:03 pm EST

a sad day indeed. i saw Bo numerous times, but the best was on New Year’s eve 1990 at the bottom line in NYC. it was the night i told my best friends that i was pregnant with my oldest son. Bo and i had a bit of back and forth during one of his many wonderful stories. i misunderstood him when he said his name and i yelled out “Ellis” and he came back at me with “what’d you think, my mama named me Bo?!!!” i am going to miss him. diddly diddly diddly daddy!!! he was the best!

Deep Purple Fan | 6/2/2008, 12:33 pm EST

I recall Deep Purple covering Bo in the early seventies in concert. The influence on hard rock can not be over stated.Alfred Bastard knows his beat.

THE ORG | 6/2/2008, 12:31 pm EST

We have lost an American treasure,a great just a few steps behind the likes of Elvis and Frank Sinatra and several steps ahead of most,YES even BB King as good as the man is still paled in Bo’s company.

Alfred_Bastard | 6/2/2008, 12:26 pm EST

RIP kind Sir! A HUGE influence on hard rock and my beloved Heavy Metal!

Hails from the ORG!
