I can understand that some folks aren’t into The Mars Volta’s music but that doesn’t mean Omar isn’t talented just because they aren’t your taste. You won’t catch me rocking out to Van Halen ever (please gag me) but I can recognize that he is a talented and influential guitar player/musician. Maybe some of you can at least look at it that way. P.s. I’ve seen everyone from Pink Floyd to Smashing Pumpkins to The Mars Volta perform live (all excellent shows) but I’ll say The Mars Volta show was the absolute most amazing amazing AMAZING concerts ever. I was so pleased, I was speechless and drove home (2 hours) with a smile permanently pasted on my face.

JordanCatalano | 7/17/2008, 9:25 pm EST

Am I seriously the first person to mention JEFF BECK?!?!?!

Say it isn’t so.

That dude should TOTALLY be in this discussion…

EVH?????!!!! | 7/6/2008, 2:17 pm EST

Ok why is EVH worshipped as the speed god? And Kirk hammet’s time is over most mediocore metel players are as good as him. I like him better EVH alot though. If rollingstone is going to do something like this and have a couple metal guitar gods; they should have put Yngwie Malmsteen and Michael Angelo Batio. Both Hammit and Van Halen skills combined; do not equel up one of these guys overall skill and creativness. If they are going to put someone from just the 80’s heavy metel era they should’ve put Dave Murrey or Adrian smith. Iron Maiden blows Metalica away in every categorie.

Anouther thing i must mention; is why is John Mayer on the cover? He is’nt that great of a player. Yes i have watched him go all out and solo, and I’m yet to be impressed by him. he’s just a franchised out name and because he plays guitar people think he’s amazing.

Mike | 6/15/2008, 10:37 am EST

Mayer = God

exrollingstonereader | 6/11/2008, 9:46 am EST

Omar? Seriously? Rolling Stone has finally proven that their ability to truly discern between good and great has been erradicated! As a muscian, it has to be insulting to people like Eddie Van Halen, B.B. King, and jimmy Page to know that they are in being put in the same group with the pseudo-genius behind The Mars Volta! I am cancelling my subscription!

GOD | 6/9/2008, 1:52 pm EST

If you are talking about uniqueness, creativity, overall talent, and song writing Eddie Van Halen is in kindergarden and Jimi Hendrix is a doctor of quantum physics.

Thaddevs | 6/9/2008, 9:05 am EST

Hendix is great, but if you are talking about uniqueness, creativity, overall talent, and song writing, Ed Van Halen blows everybody away. And If you want to argue the whole Hendrix died too soon thing, then you have to mention Randy Rhodes; he is def. in the top five…

Terry | 6/9/2008, 8:57 am EST

Why is John Mayer on the cover?

Moe | 6/8/2008, 8:23 pm EST

I agree with Mike. You put John Mayer instead of John Frusciante!!! What a joke!!!

ludwighitter | 6/8/2008, 4:28 pm EST

those of you hating on omar have no idea what you are talking about. shut your mouth and listen to deloused in the comatorium or frances the mute, and you will soon feel very stupid for thinking omar doesn’t belong on that cover.

GOD | 6/8/2008, 1:58 pm EST

I know he couldn’t be there for the cover due to death, but for all you people who think EVH is the king of the guitar, you are crazy. To date there has never been another guitar player that can hang with Jimi Hendrix. You know it to be true.

Omar who????? | 6/8/2008, 9:14 am EST

All great picks to be on there, and yes, there could have been so many more. But this is about the 100 greatest guitar songs of all time. Omar isn’t fit to hold any of these guys’ jocks. Every single guy on there (with maybe the exception of Mayer becasue he is a little young) is a guitar God. Who the F is Omar?? Throw him out and you have an amazing cover. For me, he just runins it. Its about the same as having me on there!

Haley | 6/8/2008, 2:30 am EST

OMAR! Yes! Bought it today!

Lostincali | 6/8/2008, 12:43 am EST

Anyone heard of Steve Morse?

Larman | 6/7/2008, 1:10 pm EST

Hey People, what about Steve Vai, He can surley hang in their with that bunch. I would love to see him and EVH in Dueling Guitars Video…

da judge | 6/6/2008, 9:37 pm EST

where is Peter Frampton?

black strat lover | 6/6/2008, 9:20 pm EST

LOVE LOVE LOVE the way Mayer makes love to the guitar when he plays…

YUMMY!!

Rael Floyd | 6/6/2008, 8:13 pm EST

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez is finally getting recognition…But Why is Kirk Hammet on the cover he’s overrated. why isn’t steve howe , david gilmour, alex lifeson or pete townshend on the cover?

reneewright4 | 6/6/2008, 4:15 pm EST

B.B.!!! I was so excited to see real musicians on the cover of rolling stone….too often lately its all politics and bubble gum, but if this is supposed to be great guitarists, i am confused about omar’s being among them….peeee uuuuuuu!

Burris | 6/5/2008, 9:25 pm EST

King Edward! No one is in Eddie Van Halen’s league. He is the surely THE guitar god.

Katie | 6/5/2008, 8:23 pm EST

Pagey is super cute with white hair, but he really should step away from the mullet!!!

Tommy76 | 6/5/2008, 4:37 pm EST

Contrary to popular belief, Leo Fender could not and did not play the guitar. He sure could design em though!

Jay Mini | 6/5/2008, 3:29 pm EST

What happened to Joe Satriani or Ted Nugent?
I mean Satchs’ songs are all instrumental and
the guy is a wizard.

New York Doll | 6/5/2008, 9:03 am EST

Roscoe P co Train from the Dukes of Hazard taught Eddie Van Halen everything he knows!!!!!!!!!
Roscoe and Boss Hogg sat that boy down and shoed him finger tapping when they were tappin’ daisy duke.
So EAT YOUR HEART OUT EDDIE MR. GUITAR GOLD VAN HALEN.
LONG LIVE #1 GUITAR MASTER
ROSCOE P. CO TRAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Theres a lady whos sure
All that glitters is gold
And shes buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and shes buying a stairway to heaven.

Theres a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook
Theres a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it makes me wonder.

Theres a feeling I get
When I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who standing looking.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.

And its whispered that soon
If we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn
For those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter.

If theres a bustle in your hedgerow
Dont be alarmed now,
Its just a spring clean for the may queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
Theres still time to change the road youre on.
And it makes me wonder.

Your head is humming and it wont go
In case you dont know,
The pipers calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow,
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How evrything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.

Eddie Van Halen | 6/4/2008, 10:02 am EST

I Like Things With Things

turdsandwich | 6/4/2008, 9:54 am EST

alright where is pete townsend he is way better then omar and kirk hammet damn

Sean | 6/3/2008, 5:29 pm EST

why is jimmy page rocking a mullet?

tomscott | 6/3/2008, 4:45 pm EST

wow amazing, omar is starting to get recognition. hes truly doing something new, and kirk hammet is overrated even if at one point was WAS one of the best shredders. any metalcore guitarist is just as good as him. metallica’s times are over

GMoney | 6/3/2008, 2:35 pm EST

Where is Fozzy Bear

Jgord88 | 6/3/2008, 1:52 pm EST

So happy that Omar on this. I hate seeing these lists because they are so typical and doesn’t really mean anything at all. If anyone isn’t familiar with Omar’s work then you should check out some of The Mars Volta’s stuff. Then you will see why he can hold his own playing guitar and composing.

Tank | 6/2/2008, 8:12 pm EST

Eddie Van Halen is the Lord of the Strings. In the words of Billy Gibbons when asked who were the five best players he ever saw or heard he said, “Eddie Van Halen would be numbers one through five and then the rest of the list would open up.” (This coming from the guy who was Hendrix favorite player.)No one touches Eddie.

Davey Boy | 6/2/2008, 4:53 pm EST

I am with you on Eddie Van Halen. He is truly a man among boys in the guitar kingdom. It is nice to see he is in good health again. He stll wears the crown well.
(R.I.P. Bo Didley)

Clifford | 6/2/2008, 4:41 pm EST

EDDIE VAN HALEN is the greatest ever!

Dougie | 6/2/2008, 4:37 pm EST

It was very nice to see the greatest Rock guitar player of all time get his just due -
EDDIE VAN HALEN!
Where would Rock guitar be without his contributions? Eruption should have been number two but this list was certainly better, and alot more realistic, than the top 100 guitar players of all time list RS did.

Devil | 6/2/2008, 3:42 pm EST

Eddie Van Halen is not good. He is the anti-good, a throw-back to 1979, barf.

Dave M | 6/2/2008, 1:00 pm EST

There a lot of great players. I really do not think there is a ‘’greatest'’ so called guitar player. People ask my opinion & that is what I tell them.

Tim Todd | 6/2/2008, 12:33 pm EST

After reading what all you people think, What about Sammy Haggar? What about Joe Satriani? What about Gary Hoey? AND HOW ON GODS GREAT EARTH COULD SRV COME IN AT 54 & 66? Most avid guitar players would agree SRV has to be in the top 25 EASY!. Everyone knows the man is gone but his legend will always live on! RS please keep up the great work.

Hoss | 6/2/2008, 12:29 pm EST

Microtone | 6/2/2008, 2:01 am EST

Yes where is John Frusciante?!

leafvongola | 6/1/2008, 9:29 pm EST

By the way, some of the guitarists mentioned in comments couldn’t be here for good reasons. The fantastic John F. is trying to relax after the last Chilis tour, and Muddy Waters is dead dread in sacramento.

leafvongola | 6/1/2008, 9:20 pm EST

Jack White should have been on here, he has been doing some of the best work in his career, but don’t you ever make fun of Omar!!!!

Long Live Rock | 6/1/2008, 3:53 pm EST

ACE is good, don’t get me wrong…he is an act….not one of the greatest of all time…I like KISS and respect them. But he should not be mentioned with these guys.

Long Live Rock | 6/1/2008, 3:50 pm EST

What about Pete Townshend….I would say a little better overall than Clapton…maybe a little more than Page. One of the best Guitar Players/all around musically inclined people of all time.

The list could go on and on…They got the two greats…buddy guy and BB

AZ | 6/1/2008, 3:49 pm EST

Exactly, where’s JACK WHITE?! Apparently he’s no Omar Garcia Parra Lopez.

mEEE | 6/1/2008, 2:08 pm EST

Where’s Jack White?

GG | 6/1/2008, 10:54 am EST

Eddie V is the King

KV | 6/1/2008, 10:30 am EST

Many worthy guitarists…many…but Clapton, Page, Frehley, SRV…wow…so many could of been used…but let’s face it…these guys are tremendous…worth edition, RS.

New York Doll | 6/1/2008, 10:10 am EST

ACE Frehley ROCKS and is the only real musician from Kiss.
Robin Trower too is a fantastic guitarrist who took hendrix’s mastery of distortion and feedback and expanded it’s bounderies.

dread in sacramento | 6/1/2008, 5:02 am EST

Without Robert Johnson, none of these “guitar gods” would have much to play.
And what about:
Muddy Waters.
Willie Johnson.
Elmore James.
Albert Collins.
Leo Fender.
Dick Dale.

AlexIsARollingStone | 6/1/2008, 3:12 am EST

JOHN FRUSCIANTE!!!! WHERE IS JF!!!!

JohnC | 6/1/2008, 2:17 am EST

Honestly.. Where the hell is Clapton, Page, Slash, Frusciante, and Jonny Greenwood?

flunkyinc | 6/1/2008, 12:17 am EST

OMAR!! FUCK YEAH..check out the VOLTA NOW!!

matt | 6/1/2008, 12:06 am EST

some great guitarists there, obviously once a certain level of ability is reached it just becomes individual taste who should be there. it is great to see omar there, he has lately become one superb guitarist and his songwriting ability is limitless

Drumsnbeer | 5/31/2008, 10:24 pm EST

Chad Kroeger is terrible and not even fit to clean the toilets of those that grace the cover. How can you compare a mediocre hack who releases the same album over and over again to these greats? But really, no Warren Haynes?? Seriously??

dom | 5/31/2008, 9:40 pm EST

there’s a lot that we can say should been on there, but then it would just leave us with hundreds of people. i think the way it’s now its pretty good. clapton was on tour while there was a photo shoot. that’s probably why he was on it

kim | 5/31/2008, 4:46 pm EST

I agree! Where the heck is EC? Only one of the best ever!

Jim Wetterau | 5/31/2008, 3:42 pm EST

Maybe this really predates Rock-n-roll, but if you want living guitar gods, how could you avoid Les Paul?? And he spanned several musical genres.

McShivilrus | 5/31/2008, 3:39 pm EST

Great group of players from several different eras….Period

mcstansical | 5/31/2008, 2:05 pm EST

THE EDGE ? U2 IS THE MOST OVERRATED BAND OF ALL TIME. WHERE IS CLAPTON ???

J | 5/31/2008, 11:38 am EST

There’s a healthy serving of talented guitarists, but people like EVH and Jimmy Page are truly GODS. They changed the way the instrument is approached, especially EVH. Hell, he changed EVERYTHING from how you play to how guitars and amps are built, etc. Not to mention all that killer music he wrote. Same goes for Pagey. Big difference between being a good or great guitarist and being THE guitarist of your respective era as EVH, Pagey and BB are.

Anonymous | 5/31/2008, 11:36 am EST

Yeah, where are Slash and John Frusciante? And what about Joe Perry and Angus Young?

Mike | 5/31/2008, 8:24 am EST

No John Frusciante? He was one of RS’s “guitar gods” last year, with Mayer and Derek Trucks. Only Mayer returns? Is it because he’s banging Aniston? Mayer’s a good player but he’s not exactly ORIGINAL. He’s Clapton-lite. Frusciante is a genius.

Brooke | 5/31/2008, 8:16 am EST

Awesome cover but I agree that it would’ve been better w/ Slash also. How come Jimmy wasn’t interviewed in the video?

Andrew the English bloke | 5/31/2008, 6:17 am EST

who the fuck is the Edge? oh, he’s that bloke from that pub band, who’s afraid to rock-out and afraid of distortion.

danny | 5/31/2008, 4:34 am EST

lol everyone in that picture will rape omars soul.

sambop | 5/31/2008, 3:38 am EST

this is a great bunch of guitar players, but there missing alot!
John Frusciante! Slash! Chris Shiflet! and of course Eric Clapton!!
the list is endless.

the captain | 5/31/2008, 2:47 am EST

Edge? Edge? The Edge??

Steve | 5/31/2008, 2:09 am EST

its great to see Omar get some press. now fans of guitar driven music may go check out the mars volta, though i hope they arent expecting killer solos. his gift is his songwritting abillity, not his individual talent on guitar. he can single handedly write prog-rock songs that rival Rush and Yes.

celebfan | 5/31/2008, 1:48 am EST

Um, where’s Chad Kroeger? Shouldn’t he be on this list. Whether you like his band or not, he’s a talented guitarist.

kev | 5/31/2008, 1:28 am EST

so weird to see omar there haha

hes not even that good but writes really good songs

Ceci | 5/31/2008, 12:36 am EST

Where is Slash? Good to see Kirk Hammett. Not even Dave Mustain :( ?

nathan | 5/31/2008, 12:33 am EST

de-loused in the comatorium and frances the mute are modern rock classics by the mars volta.

foosball | 5/30/2008, 11:21 pm EST

Where is Clapton?

andy | 5/30/2008, 10:41 pm EST

looks like B B King is a real joker. eddie v.h. is loving it

christian poirier | 5/30/2008, 7:41 pm EST

Where is Steevie!!! He’s a legend… (Ray Vaughn)

Marilyn Patton | 5/30/2008, 7:34 pm EST

I wish Stevie Ray Vaughan was still alive to be included in this group. He and his music is very much missed.
Maybe you should have a list of the best guitarists of all time?

Anonymous | 5/30/2008, 6:29 pm EST

didnt show much of ol’ jimmy..

Jungleland | 5/30/2008, 5:35 pm EST

Don’t know Omar or The Mars Volta’s music. This looks like a good reason to check them out

slimfender | 5/30/2008, 3:29 pm EST

That’s a good pick– choosing Omar Rodriguez-Lopez!
TMV performed in my city one evening and I remember Omar telling me, they couldn’t play at their first choice venue– B.B. King was there that night. What a hoot! All good picks. All good picks for sure.
