Worst “best of” list EVER. They missed the best classics and put in some really stupid ones. I won’t bother listing those, but since this is the greatest guitar songs list of ALL TIME, what about some real modern guitar!

ANYTHING by Alter Bridge should have been on here. Mark Tremonti is the most talented guitarist of all time. There isn’t really one in particular that would be best, except that Ahavo Rabo Taco Salad (an instrumental) is some of the greatest guitar work ever.

no way | 6/1/2008, 8:22 pm EST

Personally, I think certain additions could certainly include: Elvis’ “Mystery Train”; Chuck Berry’s “Maybelline”; Bill Haley’s “Razzle Dazzle” and “Goofin’ Around” which was played by Frannie Beecher, when he was a Comet; and in the NON Rock & Roll category: Merle Travis-”Cannonball Rag”; Chet Atkins-”Dizzy Fingers”; Les Paul-”How High, The Moon”; Doc Watson-”Nothing To It”; Los Indios Tabajaras-”Pajaro Campana”; and Jerry Reed-”Jerry’s Breakdown”

DJ | 6/6/2008, 8:58 am EST

Funny… for every song you have on that belongs there on your dumb personal list, you have two or three that don’t.your lists are dreck.Teen spirit? Please.Whoever mentioned Lay It Down by Ratt was right on the money. That no one else mentioned it is laughable. Also not mentioned: Jane’s Addiction Mountain song.

Parellel Universe | 6/6/2008, 3:16 pm EST

Anything but Nirvana. Especially Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen is a god wen it comes to guitar playing.

Derek Ayyyyyytch | 6/6/2008, 6:08 pm EST

Hey now dammit. I’m tired of people giving Mark Tremonti hell. He was the only listenable part of Creed, and continues to be the standout member in Alter Bridge as well. The man is like a friggin salad shooter with the shredding :)

one tool song? one f*cking tool song? and no helmet OR fugazi. no slayer or pantera or down? no hangar 18? barely any sabbath. seems to me that the heavy end got ripped. im all for classic rock (they left out zeppelins travelin riverside blues which just flat out shreds a headbob) but dont forget the heavy end. maybe its just me but when songs like sabbath bloody sabbath kick in and i get that metal sh*t eatin grin on my face like i wanna stick my head through a cinder block or when dime drops the two solos in floods and you can actually HEAR the sweat and blood and tears eminating through the speakers..its pretty goddamn moving.

What? | 6/7/2008, 7:45 am EST

No Alice Cooper or Pantera?

How can they omit any song off of Metallica’s black album?

No Judas Priest or Iron Maiden?

Granted I’m leaning towards the heavier side of things, but Cooper, Maiden and Priest are idols of many of “today’s” artists on that list!

i felt the rolling stones list lacked too many essential guitar songs such as smoke on the water and comfortably numb. also, some of the songs were either to low or a bit too high on list. for instance stairway should be #1, not 8. also songs such as crossroads, message in a bottle, and texas flood were a little too high up on the list. hopefully someone will look at my 100 list with interest and consederation.

*Gilmour, not Gilmore.

Wil | 6/15/2008, 10:24 am EST

The Cult ought to be one there somewhere. They heavily influenced Guns’N'Roses. Billy Duffy is an amazing guitarist, although he lacks stage presence. Check out “Fire Woman,” “Love Removal Machine,” or “She Sells Sanctuary.” One of those should have been at least #100 on the list.

Also, I think “Blue Orchid” by the White Stripes is equally as good a song as “Seven Nation Army.”

Topo | 6/15/2008, 1:40 pm EST

I agrred with much on the list. I have collected music since 1964 starting with Meet the Beatles to most recently Josh Ritter and much in between. I’ll say I was somewhat dissapointed that the Allman Brothers Blue Sky wasn’t on the list as a guitar player and fan to me it is one of the greates two guitar symphonies I have ever heard and still feel great any time I hear it. Second moving foward I think the Impossible Germany by Wilco is an amazing piece of guitar beauty for its time. Nels Kline is a monster player.

Well thanks for listening.

Late for the final tally, but here are some personal favorites that didn’t make the list (in no particular order):
“All Along The Watchtower” – Jimi Hendrix Experience
“Like a Hurricane” – Neil Young
“The Supernatural” – John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers
“Rebel Rouser” – Duane Eddy
“Secret Agent Man” – Johnny Rivers
“Still Got the Blues” – Gary Moore
“Turn! Turn! Turn!” – The Byrds
“Feel a Whole Lot Better” – The Byrds
“Stood Up” – Ricky Nelson
“Funky Mama” – Danny Gatton
“Jessica” – The Allman Brothers
“No Other Baby” – Paul McCartney
“Roll On Down the Highway” – Bachman-Turner Overdrive

WayneCha | 6/16/2008, 8:32 pm EST

These aren’t necessarily “The Greatest,” but I’d like to mention them anyway since apparently no one else has. Two of these never had a chance cause virtually nobody has heard them, but they’re just as worthy as anything else as far as I’m concerned.

“My Love Explodes” – The Dukes of Stratosphear (XTC goes gonzo!!)

“Love Comes in Spurts” – Richard Hell and the Voidoids (Begins and ends with the unmistakable rush.)

“Shoot Out the Lights” – Richard Thompson (I can’t believe Thompson didn’t make the list! Besides being a legendary guitarist, he’s a damn good songwriter as well.)

“What Goes On” – The Velvet Underground (Fairly simple solo, but it’s nirvana nonetheless, and a nice funky rhythm throughout.)

“Cardboard Suit” – Baby Carrot (Okay, BC is my brother’s band, but I’d be mesmerised by this even it were by somebody else’s brother’s band.)

“Leinaala” – Daisy Spot (Mike Farrell goes nuts on the solo for this when he performs it live, which is pretty remarkable when you consider it’s such a supremely mellow tune. Somehow he’s able to make it all seem seamless.)

frgty11 | 6/18/2008, 10:32 pm EST

I agree with most of these, and it’s hard to keep some people who are very deserving. I’d switch Jeff Beck’s “Freeway Jam” with his own “‘Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers”, a song that doesn’t need a title (or lyrics) to understand what’s going on. You could have dropped any of those in the 70-100 range to make room for Elvin Bishop’s “Fooled Around and Fell in Love”. Both of these guitar leads reflect pain without being overtly bluesy. I would have liked to have seen “Trouble No More” with Duane and Dicky’s twin leads somewhere in the top 20.
