Mission: Metallica Opens Up the Platinum Section, Posts New Video

5/29/08, 1:55 pm EST

Two weeks after launching, the Mission Metallica website finally revealed the price tiers for joining the site’s Platinum club, which will give fans access to download live shows, win concert tickets, get ringtones and witness the creation of Metallica’s upcoming album. There’s three different options to choose from: $25 gets you the MP3s of the new album at midnight of the release date plus access to the Platinum areas of the site, $33 throws in a physical CD and $125 buys you MP3s, CDs, a five LP vinyl and a limited-edition lithograph. While deliberating which package to purchase, thankfully there’s still a lot of free content, like the fly-on-the-wall video that the band posted Tuesday. In the roughly minute-long clip, the band talks about writing riffs and listening to CDs, with the promise of more exclusive behind-the-scenes content to come.

they aren’t being greedy, its just so hard for a band to make money these days compared to what they used to do, who can blame them?

I will probably not buy the album in fear that it will as bad as any music they have put out since 1991. I will listen to it immediately in the same hopes that I listened to every album since the black album: that it will rock and live up to the name Metallica, the juggernaut metal pioneers we loved them for.

The $25 deal ain’t half bad. The band gets to sell the mp3s directly to the fans (no itunes keeping the profits), and they are able to offer exclusive content to people who are willing to pre-pay.

I see this as a model for things to come in the industry

I will buy the new album when it comes out. Until then I am not giving these guys any more of my money. They need to put out a good product before they ask for more cash. I used to be a big fan of this band, but this seems a little greedy!!!!
