Single Minded: Usher, Cyndi Lauper, Al Green and More

5/27/08, 12:20 pm EST

Usher, Here I Stand [Full Album Stream]
Eighteen songs! That is almost literally a song for everyone and every occasion. If only they were titled as such, because we’d be curious to hear “Standing in Line at the Deli” or “Midwestern Accountant Named Larry.”

Cyndi Lauper, “Into the Night Life” [MySpace]
Girls apparently also want to have club singles.

Al Green, “Lay it Down” [MySpace]
What better way to ease back into work week than with this magnificent number from Reverend Al. Sometimes pop music is a blast furnace; this song is a cold glass of lemonade.

Sam Phillips, “Little Plastic Life” [KCRW]
So many years on and still underrated: the magnificent Sam Phillips returns with a song that demonstrates her knack for blending curious vocals with a big parched strum. To put it another way: she was Feist before there was Feist. By which we mean: in the ’90s, they used her songs to sell Discmen.

Larry Norman, The Anthology [Full Album Stream]
Compelling proof Christian rock doesn’t always turn out cheery or charmless or swaddled in yellow and black.

Props to Al Green and Sam Phillips, two artists who know their respective games very well indeed. I’m especially glad to hear something new from Ms. Phillips. And the Cyndi Lauper song, “Into the Nightlife” is AMAZING. She sounds as exuberant as she did 25 years ago with “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and her 4 octave voice is still in *superb* shape (which anyone attending a live show will attest to). Her best album since ‘She’s So Unusual.’

jlee83, Are you kidding? Cyndi Lauper IS A POP ICON. She has sold nearly 30 million albums, she broke a record set by the Beatles for having the most hits off of a debut album. she had many top 10 hits “She Bop” “All Through The Night” “True Colors” “Time after Time” The Goonies” “Girls” Lauper has won a grammy an Emmy Mtv Awards, Best New artist in 1985 and she sounds better than ever….so NO were not kidding! CYNDI LAUPER ROCKS!
