Sasquatch 2008: R.E.M., The Cure, Flaming Lips Light Up the Gorge

With its sweltering heat, pouring rain, vast views and tons of music, the Sasquatch Music Festival is a three-day slice of Northwest highlife. This past weekend, 60,000-some revelers converged on the sold-out Gorge, a beautiful natural amphitheater carved out of the Grand Canyon-esque Columbia River Gorge in eastern Washington, to check out headlining sets from R.E.M. and the Cure. Both bands mined their catalogs and flaunted their pop-icon status, while the Flaming Lips arrived on Sunday evening with an army of jumpsuited technicians to erect their massive “UFO Show” production, taking over the festival a full 24 hours before their set. Their eye-popping Monday night finale proved that Wayne Coyne is committed to bringing a full-scale party to every Lips experience.

For Rolling Stone’s full report, check out the Sasquatch 2008 photo gallery, stocked with info on all the major sets.

The Gorge’s massive, sloping mainstage lawn is perfect for blanke-spreading, people-watching, sunset-basking, and music-hearing, but much of the action took place at Sasquatch’s smaller stages. The Wookie Stage leaned more towards electro, with the trifecta of Battles, Jamie Lidell and Ghostland Observatory closing out Monday night. The Yeti Stage hosted smaller, mostly Seattle-based acts, suggesting that festival organizers are intent on keeping at least part of Sasquatch local. Then again, it’s easy to stay local when your region is home to Death Cab for Cutie, the New Pornographers, Built to Spill and Modest Mouse.

Is it me or is that the worst picture of Michael Stipe ever? He looks like a greedy businessman.

Wow Wayne Coyne blew my mind. I didn’t really know anything about the flaming lips and I still don’t know exactly what it is I saw on Monday night, or if I will ever be the same! Unlike any other band I’ve seen. They must be from outer space or something. Its probably the best experience of my life. I can’t really say anything else about it…

Day 3 ruled. The best weather of all three days, less crowded, and better bands from start to finish. Rodrigo y Gabriella and Ghostland Observatory absolutely blew my mind!!

The whole festival was, by far, the most inspiriring, influential, and exceptional experience of my life. It truly was [and continues to be] incomprehensible. If I could name my experience, it would definitely be ‘The Culmination;’ the third day specifically. I randomly found someone selling mushrooms, so peaking during Flight of the Chonchords and The Mars Volta was INSANE and I was beyond ecstatic. After them, the Flaming Lips blew my fucking mind. I already had the epiphany of the fucking century, so i was entirely prepared to consume every particle of musical genius Wayne Coyne (of the flaming lips), oozed. I couldn’t even begin to express how amazing the whole thing was. I mean… come on… Beirut, cold war kids, built to spill, matt costa, yeasayer, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, THE FUCKING BREEDERS, THE FUCKING FLAMING LIPS… oh my GODD! I BUSTED NUTS EVERYWHERE! The only way it could’ve been better is if it lasted forever or the Beatles miraculously made a surprise appearance. Jesus christ… I still can’t get over it. Totally worth like thirty hours of driving, a $500 speeding ticket, the honey buckets (don’t try and get it if you weren’t there), and the dickhead security guard jacking my weed and glass-blunt. One last thing: GO NEXT YEAR!!!!!
