The Idol Countdown: Five Essential Moments From Last Night’s “American Idol”

5/22/08, 1:53 pm EST

Donna Martin graduates! We mean, David Cook won American Idol! It could easily have been 1993 last night on a finale that featured Davids Cook and Archuleta wearing matching wallet chains, Seal, a George Michael medley, a Bryan Adams appearance, and a coronation song straight from the Goo Goo Dolls‘ playbook. Highlights included onetime Idol hopeful Mikalah Gordon’s interview with Cook’s music teacher (”I feel good!” she shouted) and Cook’s beard-off with ZZ Top`. Did we think Cook was going to pull out the victory after taking some risks Tuesday night? Not exactly. But Idol viewers voted for change Tuesday night (Archuleta is clearly the Hillary Clinton of Idol, is he not?). For the last time this season, here are the finale’s best moments in five quick clips:

5. Archuleta and Cook’s dueling Risky Business Guitar Hero ads: didn’t you think the second one was going to end with Chris Hanson in a kitchen?

4. If only Robin Williams had worked the term “boom-boom in your pull-up” into his dreadful “comedy” act Idol Gives Back night.

3. Sanjaya Malakar: officially a punch line.

2. Amanda Overmyer: drunk with a mouth full of beer nuts. David Hernandez: naaaaked! Plus, a very sober moment from George Michael.

1. Thanks to our TiVos cutting off, season seven’s ending was a lot like The Sopranos.

The absolute best performance of the night for me was Jason Castro’s “Hallelujah” performance. It received a standing ovation. It brought me to tears and gave me chills! It was so awesome that he got to solo.

I watched these last two shows of this years installment AI and thought David Cooke had been unfairly shunned by Simon on the first night. Even though I felt David Archuleta overall performance that night was flawless, his rendition of John Lennon’s “Imagine” was amazing. So I was quite surprised the second night when David Cooke won. What a stirring performance George Michael gave of his song “Praying for Time”, it was quite somber song he chose, he made Paula cry. I found myself wanting to give it another listen, there is an unplugged version of this song that he sang in 1996 that is simply mesmerizing you can give it a listen on YouTube lyrics and all and quite a few of AI watchers have already. Good Luck DC and DA we will be watching and listening for you both.

it doesnt matter who won. david archuleta will be tied down to one style when his forte is electicism. david cook wont get the time and energy he needs to make a good record unless clive davis suddenly decides to cast daughtry aside.

wish he would go go. George Michael was soooo icky. What a arrogant, silly, song. It went on for way too long. Was sooo depressing. You could see toll of the years of drugs in the skin on his face. The glasses. ick. I watched American Idol because it was entertaining. George Michael was not entertaining — he was just painful.

Ok enough already with American Idol. Damn, I’m so glad this show is over. You would think that a new president has been elected the way the media is covering this trash.
