David Cook Crowned Season Seven’s “American Idol”

5/21/08, 10:00 pm EST

David Cook was named season seven’s American Idol victor after a two-hour finale packed with advertising tie-ins and appearances by Seal, Donna Summer, Bryan Adams, ZZ Top, Graham Nash, Jonas Brothers, a digital Gladys Knight, OneRepublic, former Idols Carrie Underwood and Jordin Sparks, as well as George Michael (who performed a sober “Praying for Time” after the final twelve ran through a medley of his hits). According to Idol, 97.5 million votes were cast for the two Davids, with Cook pulling ahead by a margin of 56 to 44 percent. For our full recap of tonight’s show, come back tomorrow for the final Idol Countdown of the season.

I, as well as millions across the country, am very pleased to know the right Idol was chosen. I have no doubt Cook will be successful and have a long career ahead of him.

gigi | 5/21/2008, 11:54 pm EST

David Cook is such an authentic talent.I look forward to more of his creative genius

Woo Hoo! | 5/21/2008, 11:58 pm EST

America got it right! I believe David Cook will be the most successful Idol yet!

Kay | 5/22/2008, 12:09 am EST

Cook lives his music when he sings. He is very intense and sensual with the potential to be one of the best. His vulnerability adds to the passion in his song, but, could also lead to his downfall if he lets success go to his head. Stay real David and you will go a long way.

astrid | 5/22/2008, 12:16 am EST

David Cook is truly a very talented artist I will be looking forward to hear his record soon,
american was right to choose him.

Me | 5/22/2008, 12:18 am EST

I am sure that BOTH David’s have outstanding, successful career’s ahead of them! I will enjoy seeing both of them find their niche and will probably buy songs by each of them….. I am surprised that David Cook pulled out the win because Archueleta seemed to have it in the bag but I would have been happy either way.

Sue | 5/22/2008, 1:05 am EST

Yes, finally a rocker wins. Can’t wait for the CD!

Ness | 5/22/2008, 1:14 am EST

Maybe the viewers had a rebellious streak in going against the Judges choice during the showdown (Archuleta). I’m glad originality won. They are both talented, but Cook was talented AND original.

chizik | 5/22/2008, 1:37 am EST

Bravo David Cook!!!
You are a very talented!!!

Ronesh Dhawraj | 5/22/2008, 3:52 am EST

I think in the end, Archuletta’s age and inexperience counted against him. What got me even more was the wide margin that he lost by…12 million votes. I sincerely thought and wanted Archuletta to win hands down. He was alwys consistent.

bs | 5/22/2008, 4:17 am EST

it was done right! and I am so happy. I thought the little girls wouls screw it up, but Mr. Cook pulled through. Wow, best I do yet!

Sue | 5/22/2008, 7:34 am EST

I think Cook was the right choice. I think both where very talented and it came down to age. There are a lot more people 25 and up in the world than 25 and younger. I wish the best to both. Way to go cook!

michal ISRAEL | 5/22/2008, 8:46 am EST

he is A M A Z I N G

Lori | 5/22/2008, 9:03 am EST

I was never an Idol fan. But I am now, because of David Cook. While I was also impressed with David Archuletta, I still felt that Cook was more versatile and exuded more raw talent. I am so thrilled that David Cook won, and I just might become a regular American Idol watcher, but I don’t think we will see a repeat of something this amazing anytime soon. To “the David’s”, may you both enjoy amazing careers, you are both amazingly talented!

when the music's over | 5/22/2008, 9:39 am EST

David Cook was very deserving of the award! I was very upset the night before when Simon declared the night a “knock-out.” Archuletta may have done well, but Cook was still in the race. I was VERY excited when Simon apologized. When it came to the anouncement I wanted Cook to win SOOOOOO bad. I looked forward to what he would do every night! I cannot believe he wasn’t going to try out. On top of all the problems in his life, God has blessed him. I hope is brother is doing better. When Cook was crowned winner I started screaming and jumping with excitement. I am not an american idol obsessor but I truly do enhjoy the show. I believe both contestants will go far in their careers. This is not the end of the Davids. I hope they sing a song together because last night ROCKED!! I cannot wait to see what they come out with

David Cook should enjoy his 15 minutes of fame while he can because a month after his CD comes out, he will be just like all the others and fall into obscurity and we’ll never hear from him again. American Idol fame is only temporary. He’s gonna be a washed up artist before you know it.

EL | 5/22/2008, 11:42 am EST

AI fame is temporary. Just look at Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson.

Oh wait, my bad, those two ladies are HUGE MULTI-PLATINUM ALBMUM SELLING STARS, and in the case of Underwood, multi-Grammy award winning.

As for Clarkson, she’s only sold 25 million albums worldwide.

Denton | 5/22/2008, 11:45 am EST

…and he was never heard from again.

queencook | 5/22/2008, 1:24 pm EST

David Cook’s voice and being is like the paint and the world’s hearts are his canvas.

Matt | 5/22/2008, 1:36 pm EST

That was awesome! David Cook is by far the most original AI winner yet. Archuletta has a great voice but can you imagine sitting through an entire concert of his lame ballads? David Archuletta will just be the poor man’s Josh Groban. David Cook can do whatever he wants as long as the record execs don’t force him to put out crap.

strada | 5/22/2008, 2:25 pm EST

even if he “lost” he sang lead with ZZTOP!!! TOP THAT!

mary | 5/22/2008, 2:58 pm EST

David Cook so deserved this win.

Bon Jovi look out….Cook is coming!

Maria H. | 5/22/2008, 9:52 pm EST

so happy David Cook won! I am a fan of the show and this year was the best. David
Archuleta is great and has a big career ahead of him, he is young and will grow into his own.

glad David Cook won.... | 5/24/2008, 10:54 am EST

I’m so glad David Cook won – the first rocker AI!!! Now, Rolling Stone should apologize to Chris Cornell after your music critic Peter Travers had a few unkind words for Chris’s cover of “Billie Jean” on his ‘Carry On’ solo CD release last year! David Cook’s rendition of CHRIS’S version (David stayed very true to Cornell’s version, & word has it that Chris loved it) of “Billie Jean” totally sent him over the top, even prompting Simon Cowell to remark that Cook probably should have chosen to perform that song again in the finale (though glad he ultimately didn’t need to). Chris Cornell was so totally & unfairly slammed by RS when he took a gamble by covering “Billie Jean” – & it sounds NOTHING like M. Jackson’s, no disrespect intended – but after listening to it on Chris’s ‘Carry On’ CD so many times, seeing Chris perform it live TWICE (I suggest everyone go check out some of the YouTube performances or download it from itunes), & then watching David Cook do such a great job of covering Chris’s ‘cover’…I think RS needs to admit that you got this one wrong : ) !!!!!!!!!!!

andythom | 5/24/2008, 2:40 pm EST

haha…poor guy, no one will remember him in 3 months and 2 days

Zoe | 5/26/2008, 6:21 pm EST

Why the hell do people say he’s a rocker? Rocker’s don’t cry everytime they sing. This water-head ugly looking cow will be forgotten just like all of the other winners, except for Carrie. She’s on fire right now. A true rocker is Chris Daughtry. Crybaby will never sell as many records like Daughtry. You can tell he’s gonna be one ugly son of a bitch when he gets older. He’ll be going bald soon.

tiza | 5/27/2008, 1:06 am EST

To the person who bashed David because he often cries after he finishes a song: this has nothing to do with whether he can rock out or not. He cries because he feels the music so deeply. I think that’s a good thing. All his songs are so heartfelt without ever getting cheesy. He’s every bit as much of a rocker as Chris Daughtry; they just have different styles. There’s nothing wrong with tears or emotion in a performance.

OMG!!!David Cook rocks my socks, dude he made me watch all the AI episodes which I thought I never ever would do, and he made me see how deep songs could be, I mean I feel for many songs, but when DC sings it makes you feel good about the song-I AM NOT WEIRD- so yeah…well anywho..Woo-Hoo DaViD CoOk is smexci

P.S. Excuse me, Zoe, but why would you say that, of course that’s what your thinking, but there’s no reason to put that, I just want to say if you have nothing good to say then shut it, i am terribly sorry for saying that, but please keep your meaniness to yourself, sorry…

Alan | 5/29/2008, 10:06 am EST

Archuleta should have won as he is a more versatile singer who can sing various kinds of songs, not only just a rocker!!

moo | 5/31/2008, 8:01 am EST

contrary to the negativism of rolling stone comment that david cook will be forgotten soon, i can tell you in ALL the years i have watched american idol, i never once bought a cd recorded by the winner.THIS TIME, however, i CANT WAIT FOR D.C.’S CD TO COME OUT…I WILL BE FIRST ON LINE yeah, he is haunting..love him omg he is the best

celeste | 6/7/2008, 10:24 pm EST

I do not think that David Cook will be forgotten. When I heard him singing in his first test. I though his voice wonderful. Here in Brazil people love the show and everybody that has been watching the show since the beggining agrees that he is the best. He is better than Jordan, Taylor and the others. I’m going to be the firt in line to buy his CD here in Brazil. And I believe if he intends to do a show here. MaracanĂ£ is going to be small. He is AMAZING.

international fan | 6/7/2008, 10:43 pm EST

Will be Forgotten? Yeah..I have forgotten about Archie’s performances long time ago..coz they dont leave any impact on me. BUt Dc is different..Up till now, I am still watching DC’s performaces on video day and night. You are dead wrong…fans are looking forward to DC’s CD and tour…

lindar | 6/13/2008, 5:24 pm EST

The comments by Zoe are uncalled for. David Cook earned this win by hard work and talent, and happens to be quite attractive. To comment in this mean spirited manner means you are the one with the problem.

K | 6/24/2008, 2:13 pm EST

Even if he is forgotten soon (which I do NOT think will happen), he has a contract so has made a ton of money just for making his album. More than these Cook trashing losers will ever see.

And Archuletta is versatile? Every one of his songs sounded the same! You can compare their talent in the “Hero” performance. David C sounds awesome. Listen to those harmonies in the second chorus! Archuletta didn’t know what to do when it was his turn to harmonize!

K | 6/24/2008, 2:23 pm EST

Where did Rolling Stone say he was going to be soon forgotten? I’ve read the article and it didn’t say anything like that.

Hot! | 10/22/2008, 4:53 pm EST

I am a 61 year old woman and I tell you what….He makes my heart go pitter patter when he sings. That young man has got what it take to give my life some spark.
I listen to his music just about every day. I will buy his CD. Definately!!!! He is good looking too.
I just hope he keeps making albums because he rocks! He is a wonderful singer!!

msantos | 1/5/2009, 12:03 pm EST

Only one question:
Since when rolling stone began to write about so called artists to which they arrange their voices because they have none? Besides, it says ”rocker Cook.” ROCKER?! wheres the rock music in his ”music”? Im mean, I respect that everyone has its one tastes for music, but sincerily, this ISNT music. They should write about AC/DC, Motley Crue, Poison or goups like that, not so called Rock artists, because they call their genre rock. Now, i studied music. To read on staff paper. All that stuff, and believe me that isnt rock. It aint even pop. Good Pop music is the kind Madonna and Michael Jackson play. THAT is music. I dont like pop music, but that IS music. But now at days everyone can be artists because they dont really sing. Besides that they dont have a real voice, they dont have a genre.

The RS mag should write about older artists, but more talented and succesful, like the ones i mentioned above.

Now, im a 14-y-old girl, and i dont like david cook, JBros, HannahMontanna, or that suckish stuff.

Jazz, Blues, Hard Rock, and Heavy Metal, are the kind of genres i like.

I hope the RS magazine would write about more interesting articles, this one is talking about a mediocre artist, but it(the article) is talknig more about the guest appearances than David Cook. i mean ZZ Top is a great rock band. but JBs, Carrie Underwood,WHAT?! they are so called artists! I mean, JBs are a TOTAL copy of 70’s Beatles but cheaper.

Thanks for reading and i hope you write pore about artists who worth it.

msantos.

msantos | 1/5/2009, 12:11 pm EST

and im asking to everyone who posted here to PLEASE not say that David cook or David archuleta are rockers, please! you are insulting true rockers, please not say anything im begging you are insulting rock music.

msantos | 1/6/2009, 3:42 pm EST

relply to Hot!:
