New Kids on the Block Return to “Today” for First Show in 15 Years

5/16/08, 1:37 pm EST

Last month, the New Kids on the Block caused fan mayhem when they resurfaced on the Today show on a windy and rainy New York morning, and similarly dreary conditions awaited the estimated 4,000 who crowded into the show’s plaza early today for the five singers’ first performance together in 15 years. Surrounded by a hysterical throng of fans toting mementos of their adolescent obsession (old tour jackets, photographs, umbrellas and caps), the group played a short medley of their hits from the late Eighties and early Nineties — “Step by Step,” “Hangin’ Tough,” “Please Don’t Go Girl” and “You’ve Got It (The Right Stuff)” — their new single “Summertime” and a song recalling the good old days, “Tonight.”

“It’s a little bit like Al Roker in a hurricane,” joked Donnie Wahlberg, referring to the band’s somewhat awkward attempt at dancing on the wet, slippery stage. Sporting his signature half-cocked baseball cap, Wahlberg went on to say that it wasn’t he who reunited the band, but “the brotherhood … and the friendship” that remained through the years. “If the fans didn’t want it, it wouldn’t have happened.”

The turnout, despite the soggy weather, is one of the largest in Today show history, approaching the massive numbers of fans who flocked to Bruce Springsteen’s performance last September, as well as those at sets by Ricky Martin and ‘NSYNC. However, a spokesperson for the show said she’d never seen fans waiting on the street more than 48 hours in advance as many die-hards did for today’s New Kids show. “The story today is the fans more than it is us.” said Joey McIntyre, who elicited screams when he tossed his old-school wide-brimmed hat into the crowd during his solo on “Please Don’t Go Girl.”

The Today show crew passed out new versions of the oversized NKOTB buttons popular in the early Nineties and white puffy painters’ hats, which came in handy when the rain worsened during the performance. Anyone who dared keep an umbrella up as the group’s performance time approached drew angry shouts from fans and photographers perched in the press pen. While it was hard to hear the songs playing back in the plaza, the telecast revealed a poor vocal mix and a few missed harmonies. Fans, however, did not leave disappointed. “It was completely worth it and I am so excited to go to their concert in September,” said Sarah Shepherd, 25, from Long Island. “They’re coming back at a time when they can really peak. Twenty years off, it’s time for a reunion, and everybody’s ready.”

What an awesome recap of the show! I am so excited for their return, I feel like I am in 6th grade again. NKOTB forever!!!!

ILUVJoeM | 5/16/2008, 3:04 pm EST

Great article – I would have loved to have been at the concert today. I’m ready to hang up my old Joey M posters. Love NKOTB!!

Smitty | 5/16/2008, 3:09 pm EST

Hmmm…they were washed up and couldn’t sell CD’s 15 years ago (I still remember counting 75 copies of one CD in the bargain bin at my local Pamida store in the early 90’s), and they think they’re gonna recapture the magic today? Maybe they take Miley with them on tour…I can see it now…”The Washed-up and Soon Will Be Tour 2008″. LOL

Smitty | 5/16/2008, 3:18 pm EST

And after watching the video from “Today”, I see they STILL can’t sing. Thank God for pitch correction…it worked for them before, they need to use it again.

Tiffany | 5/16/2008, 3:23 pm EST

I love them then and love them now !!! NKOTB forever I remember having Jordan dolls and clothes and videos and tapes

MQM | 5/16/2008, 3:26 pm EST

There is no doubt in my mind that NKOTB is making a comeback and i’ll be the first in line to support them! They were a huge part of my childhood and today I totally relived those 10 year old “i’m in love with donnie” feelings! It’s great to have them back!! (and looking better than ever)

Cathy | 5/16/2008, 3:27 pm EST

I LOVED it…maybe just maybe the bad harmonies were due to the weather and how bad the equipment was working with it being all wet and what not….

airneal20 | 5/16/2008, 3:32 pm EST

to smitty you do know that most of their shows sold out in minutes you should do your research before you say something……………. ….. ……………………… nah!

Candice | 5/16/2008, 3:35 pm EST

Love-love-love the New Kids!! I just put some of their old stuff onto my iPod! Cannot wait to see them live in action again.

AliciaB | 5/16/2008, 3:47 pm EST

OMG I love NKOTB and I’m proud to say that I made everyone working in the O.R where I work today watch the reunion becuz I couldn’t miss it. In the 15 years that I have passed I haven’t forgoten them!

Donna D'alfonso | 5/16/2008, 3:57 pm EST

We actually thought we were dorks going at 4am in the morning for the show, and figured we would have a great view of the guys…come to find out we felt like bigger dorks because we were all the way in the back, couldn’t see a damn thing, but still stood in the rain to hear the New Kids sing. Love those bastards.

shitheads | 5/16/2008, 3:57 pm EST

how friggin embarrASSing

KEVIN | 5/16/2008, 4:26 pm EST

aww the good old day sbefore grunge made us all take prozac and we prayed for BSB and nsync to save us from our depresed state of mind. NKOTB was a fave of my middle school days , but sadly i grew up and became hooked onto REM And Nirvana but to see them live would be a part of childhood that i can relive for one night then go on to the world of grown ups…so i think everyone who is hating should go back to their childhood and relive it once becuz it will never come again ever

kerri | 5/16/2008, 4:30 pm EST

It’s really great to have them back and be able to relive our adolescence a bit..with our kids! I have had this dopey grin ever since watching the show on TV. Can’t WAIT until September :)

Canadian Fan | 5/16/2008, 5:21 pm EST

To people like Smitty – there will always be haters, but they’re selling out shows in less than 4 minutes. If you don’t like them, don’t listen, but if you’re such a non-fan, don’t know why you’re wasting your time posting comments about them.

The show was great. It will be a great reunion tour. Glad I got my tickets before they sold out and we’re lucky enough to now have a second show added in our area.

Oh Beer | 5/16/2008, 5:47 pm EST

I feel like a kid again that was great!! Now to get me some slap bracelets and Spandex with Green and Pink Stripes on the sides… has anyone seen by banana clip?

Manda | 5/16/2008, 6:23 pm EST

OH MY GOSH!!! Me and four other teachers abandoned our students to watch this morning.(we have the best principal ever) I felt 12 again. They were AWESOME!!! I can’t wait to see them live!

AJ | 5/16/2008, 6:26 pm EST

Great Job NKOTB! Dancing on a WET stage, singing in the rain, and esp a live performence after all these years. Totally awesome!
Haters-Go hate on someone else.

AliciaR | 5/16/2008, 6:52 pm EST

Was one of the lucky ones to meet and hang out with the guys back in those days, I was 19 and loved them and now at 36 still listen to their music and love them like I always did!!! They were and still are the greatest bunch of guys ever!! Miss you guys!!!

jesika miller | 5/16/2008, 7:40 pm EST

cool nkotb i lke see you on tv wow joey mcintyre sweet

Beth | 5/16/2008, 8:21 pm EST

I was at the Today show, all the way in the back and it was amazing.

onyx1176 | 5/16/2008, 10:30 pm EST

I was reading comments about this performance at another website and they were really harsh. These guys are one of the most successful boy bands in history. I believe after all these years they did pretty good. I hope no one thinks they will sound and move exactly they way they did back in the day. I can’t do some of the things I did 15 years ago and I am younger than every member in NKOTB, so I am not expecting to either.

jennifer | 5/16/2008, 10:58 pm EST

i can’t believe that they are back they look awesome i am 32 and i use to be a fan 15 years ago welcome back NKOTB i am a big joey fan

mona | 5/16/2008, 11:08 pm EST

well I love the new kids on the block and I think its great there back.Im mad because al roker got thier name wrong!get it right next time.THEY deserve IT! THERE THE BEST.

luvem4ever | 5/17/2008, 1:49 am EST

Obviously Smitty has not gotten a life since the 90’s. I mean someone who has time to stand a bin a a local store and count unsold albums. Gosh you must have come here with your negeative comment becuase you have a lack of things to keep you busy, right?

None the less I thought it was great to see them perform live again. Some of the vocals were off, but heck it was raining and the stage was slippery so I am sure that would be enough to throw anyone off. Besides how many artist have actually performed in the rain. I believe most outdoor concerts are cancelled due to rain.

I am glad they are back and cannot wait to see them live again. This will be my 5th concert of theres that I am getting to go to and I am not missing it for anything.

rugby12 | 5/17/2008, 4:10 am EST

Smitty, if you’re going to say incorrect crap like that I’m going to find out where you are then I’m gonna gut, quarter & clean you and then make jerky out of your flesh and make all the other NKOTB haters eat you.

anna | 5/17/2008, 4:20 am EST

LOL @ Smitty. life is beautiful!! you should get one.

thanks to the reporter of this article. i liked reading your unbiased (and mature) opinion about their comeback performance.

donna t. | 5/17/2008, 8:24 am EST

Holy shnikeys. New kids are back??? I’m in shock that there is still a huge fan base out there. i admit i was a huge fan back in da day…I guess we can always use a little bubble gum drama to keep our ho hum lives a little more upbeat. I’m 31 and have no regrets to being an nkotb fan. in fact, i still have one of their concert books. please don’t go booooooooyyyyyys!!

still luv em | 5/17/2008, 10:56 am EST

I watched the show at work yesterday and felt like I was 10 years old again. When I first heard they were getting back together, I was like “what are they thinking” but then when I heard they were going to be singing on the Today’s show, I was running around trying to find a TV at work so I could watch. I thought they were great!

AmT | 5/17/2008, 11:14 am EST

I swear I almost cried!!! Seeing them made me feel like a kid again. I can’t believe how good Danny looks now! I am so excited they are back and I hope they are as awesome now as they were then.

mashia6 | 5/17/2008, 11:35 am EST

Did they sound perfect no. Did they dance perfect, no. But who cares. They are obviously having a good time and not taking themselves to seriously. So, they are a little rusty…give it time because they did sound good through most of it. Their sound guy had one of them way too loud in the beginning.

Me | 5/17/2008, 1:49 pm EST

I think that they did a great job! It was there 1st performance together in 15 years – and they had to perform in the rain!! There may be a few kinks for them to work out (like the sound guy), but I think that overall they were Awesome!

JK4EVA007 | 5/17/2008, 2:14 pm EST

I love how this article honest! Yes it wasn’t the best but it also wasn’t the worst.

I LOVED their performance considering ALL that was against them…and definitely thought they ALL looked great!

I agree that rain comes into play …MOST concerts are canceled or taken inside for the Today show. But the guys obviously DID NOT want to disappoint their fans. I LOVE NKOTB!!

lanyah | 5/17/2008, 3:47 pm EST

radinette | 5/17/2008, 6:34 pm EST

They just were AMAZING! Jordan and Joey still have their fabulous voices, and they were all in great shape and looked very, very sexy…My God, those moves…they still have it for sure! And Donnie looks really sexier than ever!!!
I’m not saying it was a flawless performance, but I watched it over and over again without feeling embarrassed for them once! They did a great job with Summertime, and they were just FANTASTIC on Tonight. Loved the old school dance moves and the new ones, the enthousiam, the energy and the enjoyment…That was FABULOUS!!

By the way: FRANCE IS SOOOOOOO READY!!!

B gal | 5/17/2008, 7:17 pm EST

GinaB | 5/17/2008, 10:11 pm EST

WOW!! I was sooo excited to see these hotties that I felt like my heart was literally going to jump out of my chest! I was so overwhelmed with memories that I bought some aqua net hairspray and got out the blow dyer (I have naturally curly hair) and “POOF” gave myself the 80’s transformation…LOL..All I needed was my Guess denim skirt, Concert t -shirt(still have my Jordan t-shirt) and my high top leather keds with my socks “scrunched” down!! My guys rocked! NKOTB 4-Ever!

Heather of Tecumseh,KS | 5/18/2008, 1:08 am EST

OMG I totally love Donnie and cant wait for the to come to K.C.!!!!!I love you Donnie!!!

NKOTB Fan | 5/18/2008, 1:30 am EST

I have been a New Kids fan since I was ten years old and never stopped being one. I followed the solo careers and enjoyed it all, but there is nothing like seeing them together again! I am so looking forward to hearing the new CD and seeing them in concert! I haven’t been this excited about anything in along time.

GKG | 5/18/2008, 1:58 am EST

Smitty – you’re a fuckstick mate.

I believe 80 million albums is a approximately 80 million more than you have sold. Give the guys a break. It takes balls to make a come back and do a damn good job considering the conditions, timing and physicaly and vocal transformations over the years.

And, correct me if I am wrong, but if you have the time to count CDs in your local bargain store, Jesus H Christ, what a fucking sad life you must live, lol.

julialuvsnkotb | 5/18/2008, 3:50 am EST

I wish I could have been one of the 4000 fans to watch them perform live after all these years. Oh well, I had to settle for the tv version. Can’t wait to see them in concert later this year in Texas.

Anita | 5/18/2008, 7:40 am EST

I feel like I am 16 again, I am so excited that the boys are back. Something for my 3 kids to dance too. they love the way mum goes crazy when summertime comes on>>>>>>>

neena | 5/18/2008, 12:34 pm EST

being at the today show was sooo exciting .. They are still loved by their fans!!! Even though we ended up being in the very back.. THE energy of the place was awesome and it was soooo worth it getting socked to see them perform LIVE and hearing them!!! GOOD JOB NKOTB you have all ages sooo well and are even better looking now after 20 years!!!!

Ava | 5/18/2008, 9:55 pm EST

Thank you so much for this article! I thought The Today Show performance was GREAT! Despite the sound being a little off, I enjoyed it immensely! There is nothing like seeing NKOTB perform as one unit. Can’t wait to see them in concert!!!

32&still lovingthem 4EVER!!!!! | 5/18/2008, 10:09 pm EST

OMG!!! I’m so excited that the boys are back!!! I feel like I’m 14 again! I’m sad to say I missed the Today Show :( THANK GOD FOR YOU TUBE!!! I think they did GREAT!! Can’t wait til they come to the St.Louis area!!!! Donnie, Joey- YOU STILL HAVE THE RIGHT STUFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Christina | 5/18/2008, 11:35 pm EST

NKOTB is back…and anyone who doesnt like it…take a hike. As for the sound problems…it was the Today show’s tech difficulties. I was there, all the levels were off in the begining. Joe & Jordan had problems with the mics and monitors, and Donnies mic was WAY too loud at first…but they worked it out and the sound got better. It was AMAZING!!!!

Metal Shawn G | 5/18/2008, 11:56 pm EST

With no shotage of morons around here, it’s easy to see why these jerkoffs sold so many records!

Cat | 5/19/2008, 10:11 am EST

Wow…I can’t believe the guys are back! I was a huge fan in my younger days. I would have liked to have seen the show, but I missed it :(

I think Smitty is really just excited they are back and just too ashamed to admit it. Why else would you come here and read the article and post comments if you thought they sucked so bad?

Rugby12 you might want to seek some professional help!!

SVUF | 5/19/2008, 10:16 am EST

My question is this: Can they outlast the Spice Girl reunion? Just about a year ago, there was plenty of hype about them reuniting. Spice Girls did not last a year before breaking up again and have not been mentioned since their last concert on 2/26/08. There’s plenty of hype for NKOTB, but can they go beyond the Spice Girl reunion? That will be something I would like witness!! If they do…I’ll tip my hat to them. Most times, One hit wonders and/or bands that did not last more than two years and beyond, their reunions usually don’t last very long and fizzle out again which the band who comes to mind is the Monkees.

Amanda | 5/19/2008, 12:45 pm EST

They were not a one hit wonder and they lasted quite a few years (around 6 to be exact) get your facts straight before you go spouting off. And I really think they couldnt care less if you tip your hat to them. I know I dont!

Bukowski | 5/20/2008, 6:59 am EST

And they were pioneers. They were one of the first who inspired such greats as 98 degrees, and the Backstreet Boys. Baaah ha ha ha.

Whatever, man.

lauren | 5/23/2008, 9:31 pm EST

i was just reading this and got irritated. If they were so washed up..and this tour will be washed up..why is almost every tour date that they have opened up to sell tickets for SOLD OUT? and all the VIPS are almost sold out. If you don’t like em, dont comment. I was a die hard fan and still am. i stood out on the streets of nyc for about 10 hrs..and it was one of the best times. we met the best people. and they sounded amazing. alot better than on tv. the energy was incredible.

thank you loyal NKOTB fans. they know how much we love ands support them.

Anonymous | 5/30/2008, 10:34 pm EST

seriously….boy bands ( turned middle aged bands ) are so out of style..on the real though….and this one in particular sucked….

Anonymous | 6/14/2008, 11:29 pm EST

It is so irritating when you have people who don’t like NKOTB posting comments on this blog. If you don’t like them, why bother posting rude comments on this string. I have researched NKOTB record sales. The total worldwide sales for all of their albums is over 60 million. Somebody was listening to NKOTB and buying their music and it could not have been just teenage girls either. I will admit some of their earlier material was corny, but I am giving the new material a chance. So far, I am pleased and looking forward to their new release.

Huge Fan in Alabama!! | 6/16/2008, 11:37 pm EST
