Metallica Play Intimate Los Angeles Benefit Show, Plus James Hetfield Reveals Latest Album News

5/15/08, 12:50 pm EST

Metallica got extra loud in their first live set in a year on Wednesday, headlining a benefit concert in Los Angeles for Flea’s music school for kids, the Silverlake Conservatory. That meant no ballads and no new songs from the band’s upcoming Rick Rubin-produced album. Instead, for nearly two hours at the Wiltern Theater, Metallica erupted with big sludgy riffs and epic speed metal going all the way back to the early Eighties.

“Now that’s a beautiful sound right there,” singer James Hetfield told the crowd, responding to the cheers from 2,000 fans who had paid $300 (or $500 for VIP seats) for a rare chance to see the band in a smaller venue. “It’s great to be playing live again.”

New songs from the upcoming album would just have to wait until the fall. Meanwhile, there were no special effects, but just four guys rocking out onstage, from the intense riffs and beats of “Fuel” to the heavy gloom of “Sad But True.” Lars Ulrich stood while pounding the drums during “Ecstasy of Gold” and some fans dared to crowd-surf in the old art deco theater during “Master of Puppets,” despite warnings at the door. They couldn’t help themselves.

Near the end of the night, Flea joined Metallica on bass for the insanely fast “Fight Fire With Fire,” a speed metal classic from 1984. It was enough to inspire Hetfield to step back and flash the devil’s horns with both hands at Flea and his band, just like any other fan.

Hours before Metallica’s set, Flea was downstairs warming up on bass and watching a silent TV screen showing the NBA playoff game between Boston and Cleveland. Ulrich was talking to TV reporters nearby and Hetfield was in a great mood and ready to reveal just a few things to Rolling Stone about the new album.

When you guys are about to get back in action, is there a certain anticipation, or just business as usual?
We have a tendency to rehearse way too much. So we’ll book two weeks of rehearsal and probably rehearse about five days and then fuck around the last week, and say “We’re good.” And then we’ll end up playing some of the new songs because we’re all hepped up on them right now. Most of that goes away. We have some of the nightmares that maybe other musicians have: the nightmare of I can’t find the dressing room, the guys are playing a song I’ve never heard in my life, my guitar cord’s not long enough and I can’t make it up to the microphone, the guitar neck is made of rubber — your normal dreams. But after we rehearse the dreams go away, and I feel a little more confident.

What brought you to this benefit?
We’ve been asked a couple of years. This is an extremely worthwhile cause. Music is disappearing in schools. It’s got to be somewhere, especially these days, where music is taken for granted. It’s nice to have a place where you’re able to do that. Music has absolutely saved my life.

Did you know Flea?
The name is somewhat memorable. When you hear someone named Flea, you go “What? He must jump a lot.” I’ve been a Peppers fan for a long, long time. I considered them a little more psycho. I never got to see them in the early days.

You guys came up in the same time, but in totally different scenes.
Very different. Back then we liked hearing different styles of music. They weren’t heavy, but they were extreme, and I was into pretty much anything extreme.

Does the new Metallica album have a title yet?
It’s got a title and we’re still playing with it to see if we like it. But I guess the album’s done. It’s still got to be mixed. All the singing, all the recording is pretty much done. And we’re pleased with it.

Was it an unusually long process this time?
It doesn’t seem that way, but at the rate we’re going, the next one will take four years. I don’t particularly like taking that long. There’s a few things that I know could make it shorter, but other band members disagree, so we do our best with a compromise.

After the last one, and the trauma captured in the Some Kind of Monster documentary, this one should have been a breeze.
Yeah, exactly. It was a breeze as far as material. This is where the disagreement comes in. We had too many songs. Let’s write 10 good ones. This riff’s not good enough? Say goodbye to it. Let’s have the discipline to wave goodbye. That doesn’t apply here. We’re craftsman: We can take an OK song and make it good, but if it’s not great, it doesn’t make the record. But we see it through to the end. We’re whittling it down to 10 or 11 now.

What brought you to Rick Rubin?
It was time to get a fresh set of ears. Bob Rock has done amazing stuff with us. It got a little comfortable. Maybe the fire wasn’t there as much, in our viewpoint. Bob is a great person, a great friend. I feel extremely safe and comfortable with him, and maybe that wasn’t what we needed to feel on this. We needed to argue a bit. We needed to get shaken up a little bit. That’s what the mission was.

Did you always agree with what Rubin had to say?
Definitely not. But I was very willing to look at it and try it. If he’s suggesting it, there’s a reason behind it. And most times it was better, sometimes it was not. We like to be open, but there are times when we just know we’re right and it’s as simple as that. It wasn’t head-butting like in the past, but there was some negotiating going on.

What was the idea behind making this album?
The direction is embracing our past in the now. We know what we know. It’s hard to erase that. But to strip it down again, and get back to why we’re doing this? Why did we write songs that way? The template was Master of Puppets and the strength of that record. How can we do that now?

You still see that album as a high mark for the band?
Oh definitely, no doubt about that. Hopefully this will be another one. We feel this record is really good, especially after St. Anger. It was very one-dimensional and abusive to the listener. That was the anger coming out. And if you weren’t feeling that, it didn’t feel so good. But this one is a lot more moody. We a lot of things I think make a diverse and interesting record.

Doing any of that tonight?
We’re not playing any of the new stuff. I don’t think this is the place. This is a benefit for Flea’s thing. We don’t want to grandstand with anything else here. There will be a time for that.

…and justice for all

Robert Trujillo is certainly a motivating factor for Metallica to produce great metal. What a talented bass guitarist!. He has directed the minds of Metallica on producing music, other than personal matters circulating the band. Ride the Lightning, Master Of Puppets, Justice For All and the Black Album were all great albums. St. Anger’s results were clearly captured on the “Some Kind Of Monster”, documentory. They where experimenting with a different sound….both Guitar and Drum tunning wise. Now that they have regrouped well and signed on Rick Rubin and concentrated on creating music as a band, the outcome should be interesting. Just remember who the newer Metal bands idolized!.

Dave | 6/30/2008, 2:00 am EST

The way I have always looked at it is pretty simple. Some people include Mustaines absence as being one of the reasons they went downhill, but I don’t credit Mustaine as much as I do Burton. Cliff Burton was the real musician who was actually trained. For example he taught Hetfield how to play harmonies. James even admits that Orion was Cliff’s composition. And Justice For All still had Burton’s leftovers, that’s why it was good as well. The black album was the only album I could stand after they changed to Bob Rock. Yeah it’s good to evolve and grow but by the same token, stick to what works…what got you famous in the first place.

Loved the early stuff, loved the late 80’s early 90’s stuff, loved the late 90’s early 00’s stuff - and I have not doubt that I’ll love the new album too.

Truth is, Metallica have evolved and by evolving you will always leave people behind. That does not change the fact that Metallica are a great band. Speaking as a musician, I love the way their sound, tone and style has altered. St. Anger was different, as was Load and Re-Load. That does not make them bad records - they’re just doing what they want to do - who can argue with that?

AliveStickMan | 6/12/2008, 9:18 pm EST

90% of you people are idiots. Oh Metallica are washed up, metallica should play thrash again etc. Do ye people exclusively listen to music by artists that has never changed in style? Ye people are only saying that stuff because it’s metallica. If it was almost any other band in the world none of this crap would be spewed about them. Do ye honestly think their 90’s music doesn’t have it’s own merits? I seriously honestly doubt it. I cannot fully express my disgust at several of you single-minded duck asses. Thank God some people here have some SENSE and can appreciate other music besides thrash. Love, AliveStickMan.

Grim Reaper of Rock Bands | 5/25/2008, 7:26 pm EST

Not to worry, kids. After release of new album, I’ll put these washed up wanna-be punks to rest. After Justice it was all about the money, sold-out shows, and prestige.

I often wonder why people make such an effort to make stupid, negative comments on a band they don’t like…

In any case, I bet you half the people dissing Metallica will go out and buy the new CD. Even if it’s just to criticise it, but I bet they will and come back here and make some more idiotic statements.

arch stanton | 5/20/2008, 10:13 pm EST

after reading Billy Dick’s comments, my perfect life felt a little sorry for the guy or whatever he is. Lets hope Metallica’s album rocks just for his sake. Long live Cobain…..

Metallica are awesome | 5/18/2008, 7:25 pm EST

If you don’t care about Metallica why are you reading this?
Anyway, even if this album ain’t great, Metallica are still awesome. They didn’t play any St Anger or (Re)Load songs when I went to see them in 2007. If they (unlikely) do produce another mediocre album, they’ll just whitewash it with a few live renditions of Master of Puppets and Seek and Destroy.

Frank | 5/18/2008, 1:05 am EST

No one around me liked St. Anger, I was the only one able to listen to it. Some Kind of monster felt to long and Lars drums did really sound like he was playing with a metal garbage pail. I can go with them changing in there old age, and I can understand that you cant really compare old sh*t with the new sh*t. But I can still say I can enjoy it and be a fan.

Gabriel Lara (Mexico) | 5/17/2008, 3:25 pm EST

It was 1986, I was 16 and a friend of mine gave me a tape of this “underground” band… Ahh that sound! It died in 1991 with a black piece of crap.

Chuen | 5/17/2008, 1:31 pm EST

People age, people change - bands do the same. Expecting Metallica to replicate 1984 is simply not realistic. Most people can’t even stay in one job for 24 year, yet, you expect Metallica to play the same MOP formula for 2 decades and a half? I applaud their resiliency, and their inertia to do something great. Yes, there are other bands past their prime that are still playing music and doing tours - but they are merely doing it for the paycheck. I don’t think this is the case with Metallica. I think they earnestly want to do something great again, and I commend them for that. Signing on Rick Rubin should be interesting - I have very high regards for that man. I think Rick Rubin did a masterful job with Slipknot’s Vol.3 - balancing the chaos that metal should be with refined precision that no amateur can replicate. Looking forward to the new album.

DMX | 5/17/2008, 3:03 am EST

Heres hoping its a good one. Some of the classic metal bands have really refound themselves in the past 5-6 years. Case in point, Iron Maiden.

Personally I think Metallica sort of lost the plot a bit post Justice, but then some like that phase more. Who’s to say who’s right.

Billy Dick | 5/16/2008, 10:45 pm EST

I grew up with Metallica, when we were young we liked to get drunk and F@#K S#@T up. After College we wanted people to hear what we had to say, then we went a little coprate trying to REload,….now we have families and our kids play in the back yard while we talk about the good old day and we struggle to make sense of our desire to be good role models for our children and the fire that still burns deep inside to FTW. I have always had Metallica as Compadres and friends who helped me in tough times and motivated me to succeed in other times. Hope the next one inspires me as well as the past ones have. Thxs Bros fukken A

Laconix | 5/16/2008, 9:50 pm EST

Metallica had 3 great albums. The first 3. Why? Maybe because Cliff Burton and Dave Mustaine had huge influence. When justice for all came out it was accepted and considered good but differant. And now with 21 years of hindsight we can see that all efforts Without Cliff and Dave equal shit… or to say it nicer they are a differant less potent band without Cliff and Dave’s influence.

THAT is the official history of metallica. Ask any real metalhead from the 80’s like myself. - Anyone talking about ANY song being great of theirs, that isnt on the first 3 albums are a fan of a Differant Band than the Real metallica.

That said I hope they can pull off a great album like the halycon days, I just dont see it happening. they never repeated it so how now..

Maggi | 5/16/2008, 7:43 pm EST

some of you guys are fuckin tards!

Metallica are a GREAT BAND, they haven’t “sold out” or “became dinosoars” along with Poison like someone said, they haven’t made a bad album to date. Yes, St. Anger wasn’t my favorite, but NO, it wasn’t bad. It was an attempt at staying different from the other crap-metal bands of today. They are getting older, that is true, but their music is getting more meaning full and angry, isn’t that what we wan’t. St. Anger was heavy, St. Anger was angry, and St. Anger was great!

I just can’t wait to get my hands on their new album!!

Metallica are amazing, if you don’t feel that way, then why are you here?

Tony | 5/16/2008, 5:42 pm EST

I think it’s funny how everyone hates. Rock music is terrible today, you can tell nobody is listening to today’s crap because they cannot tour arenas or Pavillions without having 50 other bands with them. Linkin Park is the last meaningful rock musicians to hit the scene. Metallica’s St Anger was a bad album, the only bad album they have made in their careers, but I think they recognized the mistakes they made with that album & let’s see if they are ready to come back & make a great Album. I’ll be looking forward to seeing the band for the 13th time in the fall 08 or 2009.

4 good albums. | 5/16/2008, 5:33 pm EST

Metallica put out 4 amazing albums… but they are the poster child for “what have you done for metal lately?”. I cringe to think that they have now sucked longer then they were good; (good from 1984-1989) (bad from 1990-2007). I am intrigued by the reference to using Master of Puppets as the watermark to live up to on this new album and also that they are working with Rick Rubin; it is worth noting that Slayer has not wavered off the path like Metallica so that has to say something. Bob Rock has changed all the bands he’s worked with and alienated the core fans; Motley Crue is the other band, Dr. Feelgood does not live up to Girls, Girls, Girls, or Shout at the Devil, so I rest my case. The funny thing is that Metallica changed to stay relevant in the upside down 90’s (the dark days for metal) and now that metal is back people will really look to see if Metallica can stake their claim again. Funny that the last 2 Megadeth albums are kick ass (United Abominations was album of the year for 2007 in BW&BK magazine and they can be pretty harsh as they were with Mustaine in the late 90’s). With Slayer and Megadeth putting out prime metal music, the pressure is on Metallica to prove if they are relevant. I have a hard time believing that the same band that put out Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets put out Load and ReLoad; and people bash Priest for Turbo??? The thing that I find funny is that not too many people seem to notice the following correlation: someone posted that by And Justice for All you could see the writing was different and they were going in a different direction. Is it just coincidence that And Justice for All was the first album to not have any songs on it that Mustaine wrote? It seems that once they ran out of his songs they no longer had a formula that worked. I doubt that Lars would ever admit this though. I saw them twice in 1989-1990 before the Black Album came out and have never desired to see them since because I would not want to hear any of the newer material mixed in with their real music.

Paranoid Android | 5/16/2008, 4:56 pm EST

I can’t believe Metallica is palying Bonnaroo. This makes no sense at all!!! Bonnaroo used to be a cool festival. They need to be on the Dinosaurs of rock tour along with Def leopard and Poison.

Metallica and Kid rock should do a tour together. Can you imagine all the rednecks? Their new albumis going to blow they should give it up. Someone mentioned bands staying past their prime and these guys fit that mold for sure. They are not anything like led zep,or sabbath they had a few good albums in the 80’s then they became sold out alternative rockers.TOOL is WAY better.

ADRIANO ( BRAZIL ) | 5/16/2008, 4:24 pm EST

I think that Metallica will return to remember the old Metallica that marked with good music, because of already having listened as several composiçoes seek en destroy, fade to black, master, one, that epoch-style thrash, it is hard to believe they can do something better, but in my opinion and for the comments that I heard, the new album should be similar to the Black Album (metallica), poeque also the vacol of james ja is not the same,, which I am sure of what they will do something good, is the decepçao they have caused to all the fans who have learned to like them, who admired the sound of them, get min mainly, I did not expect something so bad as was the st. anger,, what was a waste, but now we are awaiting pra see, I hope not disappoint me again, things were better than soavam made by james, when he had the command, it was the conçoes, I hope at least açgo similar to the black album, I hope they return to be metallica who died in Black album (metallica).

Hello I’m 83 years old and yes, I remember those days when Metallica were young whippersnappers playing the speed metal back in the early 80’s by golly. I used to headbang and whip my long hair back and forth when I saw them in the small clubs. Back then metal was powerful and fast and angry. Today’s Metallica are wimps, playing make believe metal to the young’uns who have some spare change. Yes sir, this ain’t the Metallica I know.

This group | 5/16/2008, 3:04 pm EST

is awful and always have been. Powerchords have been taken over by real guitar players such as Jack White. Wake up and take off the stone washed jean jacket and cut the mullet!

Acoustic and Metallica should not even be in the same sentence. This goes to show how the demographic of the Metallica fan has changed.Imagine if those guys tried to play an acoustic set in 86 they would have been torn apart. The fans now are total wussies.

It’s always the same with these guys. Whenever a new album is ready to come out, they say that they’re embracing the past, trying to sound like the Metallica of old. But then, when the new album comes out, it stinks like a pile of shit that’s been laying out in the sun for a couple of hours. Yeah, yeah, we heard this all before. “Aww man, this is gonna be our heaviest shit ever..” Aaahhh shut up and go back to smoking your weed.

Pope Benedict XVI | 5/16/2008, 12:29 pm EST

St. Jerome has appeared to me in a dream. And he said, “Your Holiness, this Metallica rock and roll band. They will release a new album which should ignite the masses into a frenzy. Young people everywhere will seek this new Metallica music, and turn their backs on God and faith. You have been forewarned…” Now I say to you, all my children, do not worship this devil music. Look to the light!

Scooter | 5/16/2008, 12:29 pm EST

Metallica isn’t relevant anymore? GOOD! Don’t listen. I liked them better when they weren’t relevant anyways. They were the band that wanted to be abrasive and not give two shits about it.

Liquid Feces | 5/16/2008, 12:13 pm EST

Metallica is not relevent anymore. Sure they sell out shows, but even fucking Def Leppard sells out shows and they suck ass. This new Metallica album will be a defining moment for them - either they win back their core fans by releasing a spectactular non-commercial kick ass album, or put out a piece of shit again which should call for an end to Metallica as a band as we know them. Time will tell.

Cream of Mushroom | 5/16/2008, 12:07 pm EST

KNIVES OUT | 5/16/2008, 11:03 am EST

I love it when these Metallica stories come up. Metallica has sucked ever since the black album. In justice was good but you could see they heading to a more mainstream sound.Lets not even talk about load/reload those albums were a load of crap! Completety void of the Metallica sound.St.Anger was ok the first time I heard it way better than those other two albums but still after the first listen it started to really grate on my nerves. Lyrically it was horrible. There are way better metal bands out there today keeping it real and brutal. High on Fire,Boris,Mastodon

Tune... | 5/16/2008, 10:40 am EST

I’m just glad they tuned back up to E from Eb. I think that makes a huge difference with James voice and the tone of the guitars. Eb helps make bluesy riffs sound less happy and more heavy but these types of songs sound better tuned up. I hope they do that live, couldn’t tell from bootleg recording of benefit concert but I think they did.

Jungleland | 5/16/2008, 10:30 am EST

Metallica didnt matter 10 years ago?? really. I saw a sold out show in 1998 where they did a 20 minute acoustic set (practice for S&M) and they OWNED the place. I think 20,000 tickets says somthing. They were / are the PEOPLES band anyway

They have a great sense for melody in their “pop” songs and an amazing ability to build exciting epic songs (ok mostly in the 1980’s)

Their stuff has held up well (like ACDC and Van Halen) because they did not chase the flavor of the month. The Black Album is my favorite (Im more of a rock guy than a metal guy) and The Unforgiven II may be the best song they ever wrote

in 10 years Metallica will be CLASSIC ROCK the way Led Zeppelin is today

Do they need to be relevent in the same way a new band is? Not really…they are not gonna be top 40 stars again like 1991

Other than St.Anger (which I liked), Metallica never said they were “going back” to their roots on anything. Even on St. Anger they just said they were taking elements, which they did. Totally looking forward to the new one.

Zalo666-PARANOIA | 5/15/2008, 10:00 pm EST

Hi, ilisten to metallica from 1989 i think, first with garage days with dirty sound and without green hell (SHIT!), then comes master of puppets without titles, then kill em all on tape ( original)…that s my story with they, and getting all the stuff. i love metallica and i think forever but i also think they went in the wrong way with the bad drums sound on st anger, with the vocals on that album, the some moments boring songs…but st anger contain some very good moments and riffs, some fast tempos like i ve never heard from they from and justice and that s all, but i think they started to go in the right way. The 90 era is very nice, i preffer thrasher metallica but load, reload, garage inc and s&m contains great songs and great riffs and overall the sound, i love that sound, i love mercyful fate s cover, THAT S METALLICA S SOUND AND STYLE, i think so. it s so difficult for a band, with soooo many fans, do the right for all…from fade to black, grat song, there were controversy, remember, and, from that era, they do what their hearts feel, and don t forget metallica is their lives and their bussiness, what do you do if you band is your busines and don t sell records? or you don t want to repeat albums and lose control?metallica for years was the kings o f metal, in their name it is MATALllica, and take a look at the ride, master and and justice albums: same starting song style, same 4th song style power ballad, aone instrumental, one title track on 2nd place…so there are errors or something to talk and dissapoint from day 001with every set list that somebody thinks is uncomplete.I THINK THE NEW ALBUM will be great, (take a look at wwwmissionmetallica.com)not better than master of puppets because it s very hard to get but i think it will be the best mix of metallica pre black album and post black album, the perfect metallica style i hope) will be on that new one, the vocals and the drums are better than from 2003 and there are solos (i preffer mustaine or friedman style but..) and i don t like trujillo style on stage but he is the best bass player to metallica with newsted after cliff(RIP)give them a chance, i am really excited for the new album, i can t see metallica in person at 1999 at my city, Gijon, ASTURIAS, SPAIN, they cancel the show because the stage was bad installed, (i saw that fucking stagefalling down inside the floor…) and i went to know them but it wasn t possible..i hope someday! i am 30 years old, i hope that!give them a chance WE ARE METAL, cheers to all and sorry about my english. feel free to talk with me from all the corners of the world. NICE TO MEET YOU ALL

good live band, but they always say their next record is going back to the heyday, when they were heavy and good… and it NEVER is…. fact is metallica have been boring for a while now… master of puppets will never be equaled…

metallica has sucked and been boring to listen to after MOP…. every time they release a new record, they claim it be getting back to the old school stuff and being heavy and everytime it still sounds like heavy alternative rock… no heavier or any more interesting than other bands like creed, nickelback, etc…. i.e, pure shit.

I don’t know what sites joner’s been reading, but I haven’t read many critics praising Fall Out Boy or Panic at the Disco. Radiohead or R.E.M. would have been better examples. Anyway, I’ve got my fingers crossed on this one. I thought the music on St. Anger was potentially good, but the production (horrible drum sounds) and arrangement (no solos?!?) kind of killed it for me. Here’s hoping they’ve come back to their senses.

Nothing these guys do is wrong for me. I do agree ST ANGER is a hard listen, but it rocks. But what I’ve heard of the new album on the Mission: Metallica is so not MASTERS. More transition between JUSTICE and the Black Album. Still good, but MASTERS is holy. And dude, I would’ve paid the whole 500 and then some… Please guys, come back to Venezuela, it’s been 10 years already!

“You obviously do- you’re posting here”

Totally agree. It’s hilarious when people claim not to care about something, then post a comment about an article of it.

Then if you call them on it, often they’ll post an angry retort. So first you post about something you don’t care about, and then you COME BACK to see if people disagree with you? Yeah, you sure don’t care. There’s a difference between apathy and dislike.

ST ANGER = GARBAGE | 5/15/2008, 4:57 pm EST

Lets hope the new one isn’t another shit sandwich!

I would’ve paid 300 plus, for the cause and the band, it’s too bad stuff like this only happens over seas (zeppelin and floyd reunions) or on the west coast. It gives the average joe fan ZERO chance to see these acts. And by the by… St. Anger was a hell of a rock album, plain and simple. The critics too often trash good rock and roll, only to praise the likes of fall out boy and panic at the disco. Sad but true…

Tickets were $203 each.
Not $300 as the article claims.

(and they were going for far cheaper on eBay….)
