The Moldy Peaches Shill For Atlantis Resort With Strange Ad Remix

5/14/08, 12:40 pm EST

The Moldy Peaches are one of the unlikeliest success stories in indie rock: they went from being a minor novelty act to being essentially broken up to rocking Barbara Walters on The View with a song from the soundtrack to Juno. They’ve allowed that song, “Anyone Else But You,” to be re-written for an ad for the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas. The new version features lyrics like “Let’s go ride a couple of dolphins/Or maybe play tennis/Or do some golfing.” It’s a strange marriage, as the Peaches never seemed like the types to shill at this level, while Atlantis associates themselves with a band who once had a minor hit with a song called “Who’s Got the Crack.” Click above for the full ad.

Wow. After seeing ths ad for the first time this past weekend, I thought, ‘Well theres another company that bought a decent song out ad crapped all over it.’ But I had no idea the song was reworked by the Moldy Peaches themselves (as opposed to just having other musicians redoing it kind of like how Weezer’s ‘Island in the Sun’ was done for an ad recently, which I believe is for this same company). Either way, the Atlantis ads are starting to ruin the music I like to listen to.

this is hilarious…im sure the peaches see the ridiculousness in doing this

layne Montgomery | 5/14/2008, 3:10 pm EST

this is clearly not the moldy peaches.

Your horrible taste in music is ruining your idealism.

erc | 5/15/2008, 2:42 pm EST

Let’s go to Atlantis with my mp3 DVD rumple-packed guitar!

Lou | 5/15/2008, 4:51 pm EST

What happened to the beautiful music that used to be in these spots? I remember they were dreamy and I saw them in a theater and wanted to go. Now it looks like I Mickey Mouse might follow me there.

Anonymous | 5/17/2008, 8:53 pm EST

thats horrible. thats all i can say. what the fuck.

joly | 5/18/2008, 12:09 am EST

The article does not say they reworked the song. It just assumes they gave permission for it to be done. It’s just possible that their publisher did the deal behind their backs. I’m sure Kimya will comment one way or the other. I know she has already turned down big ad $$.

I heard another ad on the radio the other day that plainly parodied the MP’s – there’s a litle craze going on on Madison Ave..

Anonymoose | 5/18/2008, 1:54 am EST

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGE EEEEE

Megan | 5/18/2008, 4:39 pm EST

I think the song is nice.
The lyrics are obviously and only for a commercial, but the sound is nice. I think the quality is better than the original song and I would like to see the commercial again. :)

joly | 5/19/2008, 12:56 am EST

I got this word from Kimya:

Joly
I am against ads, Adam is not.
We have gotten a ton of offers and I have said no to all of them. Adam asked me recently if we could do somethings, sometimes. Since this would not include my voice or lyrics I figured I could feel better about this than anything else. It is like a parody. This is the first I have seen of it, I am overseas. It is disgusting and funny to me.
We didn’t rewrite or rerecord anything. They did it all. They asked us to. I said no way. They could use the melody but I wanted nothing to do with it.
If you hear my solo music in ads it has been ripped off, although I might start doing some jingles for organic handmade cloth diapers.
So yeah, the Atlantis thing is grody. The Moldy Peaches is not just me.
My parents are in a rough spot right now. I bought them a car.
Sigh.

This sounds waaaay better than the moldy peaches

katie:) | 5/19/2008, 7:34 pm EST

heyy.
that little girl in the window.
i know her :)

no one | 5/22/2008, 7:25 pm EST

I LOVE THAT SONG!!! ( Way better that moldy peaches.)

jackkie | 5/22/2008, 7:26 pm EST

That song is o.k But I like it

casper | 5/23/2008, 9:58 pm EST

I am a jingle singer and this was my second big commercial. I sing on the second, third and fourth verses and the doo doo doo’s of the song(female). I think the melody is beautiful and why is it that the MP’s are selling out? They licensed their music for a movie and what’s the difference for a commercial. It’s just the melody. I am biased though I guess you could say since it’s paying my rent. With a big smile on my face.

anonymous | 5/25/2008, 8:41 pm EST

this is in NO WAY better than the moldy peaches. this is just gross.

all i can say is, i’m never staying at atlantis

polarbear | 5/26/2008, 2:12 am EST

I’m not sure what the ad-gurus were thinking here. I mean the song became moderately popular after Juno, and admittedly it’s catchy. But it’s not as if there’s a huge overlap between fans of this type of music and $500 dollar/night luxury resorts. Or is there? Maybe Atlantis will become the new nexus of an anti-folk scene. All things such as hipsters swimming with dolphins and so forth.

adam | 5/27/2008, 3:17 pm EST

I think too big a deal is being made about this. It’s the sound of the moment as a result of Juno, and Atlantis is capitalizing on it. Two weeks from now they’ll be on to something else. I’m sure Kimya is frustrated about the attention being given to her songs by the 5-minute fame of pop culture.

Fiend | 5/27/2008, 10:25 pm EST

I hope ads (like this one) ruin music for people who don’t think musicians are money grabbing hacks.

Max | 6/11/2008, 8:37 am EST

God damnit. Really? I can deal with the Moldy Peaches overnight rape by the mainstream because of Juno…the same people who listened to Death Cab for Cutie last week are listening to the Moldy Peaches and Kimya Dawson this week.

But this is just trivialization of art.

BAD. No. Stop that.

Spirit Journey Formation | 6/18/2008, 3:17 pm EST

Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start. Just because we sold a song, doesn’t mean we sold out.

turtle | 7/9/2008, 2:58 am EST

these dunces are annoying… it was not redone by the peaches, and can i just say, it really sux! people say “the quality is better” or “the voices are better”, but thats not the point. this took a great, heartfelt, down-to-earth song written by great people, and smashed it by makin it about crap… i do, however, understand the crap about be “smart” to capitolize on pop culture, but its still wrong, and it still sux! and it only fuels the hate of main stream crap by those who know a little something about music, and what its supposed to mean

my god people!! such angst over a great simple tune being used to promote peace and comfort in a resort! Can’t you get past the “idealised” Moldy thing and just agree it’s a “great”tune. Man! Any group that gets such kudos for a song should be on the moon! It’s not like it is the last great thing they will ever do. Or…do they not have like 20 cd offers right now going…hummmm.
K would tell you right now…it’s a business AND art.

Get over it.. and groove

I like it | 8/28/2008, 5:21 am EST

I’ve never heard of ‘moldy peaches’ or ‘juno’ before I heard this song on the TV commercial but I liked it so much I ended up tracking it down to listen to it again – which is the point of it- I also like Atlantis, have been there before and will go back. They also aren’t “$500 a night” some rooms/dates are as cheap as $100 a night… closer to $200 most of the time.

katie | 9/2/2008, 11:10 pm EST

ITS JUST A SONG PEOPLE.

So, they did a parody, BIG FUCKIN DEAL.

Just because they re-did a song doesn’t mean you should resent the company.

People remake songs like this ALL the time.

STOP YOUR BITCHING.

Ed Marquez | 9/16/2008, 12:40 am EST

Artists have bills to pay too. When people rip your songs this is how you make money. I’m from Seattle and love Kymia Dawson and the Moldy Peaches. I don’t like homophobic Jamaica or a resort built on the back of cheap poor labor, but I don’t hold this against the artist.

Cattie | 9/23/2008, 1:45 am EST

That’s so messed up. The Moldy Peaches hardly seem like the kinds of artists who would allow their songs to be used for purposes like this. I’ve been a Peaches (and Kimya) fan for a while, and when I saw this commercial, I almost lost my beef and broccoli out of my mouth! With Juno, the band carefully looked at the movie to make sure they approved of the project before attaching their music to it – this just seems so out of character for them! I still love ‘em, though.

GQ | 9/24/2008, 1:59 pm EST

Brilliant!

Don’t think of it as selling out, think of it as cashing in.

micah | 10/7/2008, 3:20 pm EST

katie stop bitching about bitching, bitch. this song is not a parody but a cheap way for a company to attract more people using the success of Juno and the songs in it.

Ed | 10/8/2008, 12:00 am EST

Smart marketing has ruined yet another classic song from my library.
I honestly do hope that Adam Greene saw some money come out of that deal. I know that the original song was recorded in a hotel room.
I hope all of you who just heard that song on TV and searched it out, would please please please!!!! Broaden your musical horizons by listening to the ACTUAL version of this song.. better yet the whole ALBUM.

Americas consumers are sucking the life out of me.

Ed | 10/8/2008, 12:15 am EST

upon further research…. Adam Green (not Greene …sorry) is a trust fund kid who probably wipes his ass with hundreds so who cares about them making money on this… but it WAS a great song.

Takes me back to the time OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE ruined that Of Montreal song a few years back.

P.s. Sorry about all the grammar and spelling errors… :)

Adamn | 10/8/2008, 2:30 am EST

I listened to the original i like the emotion and lyrics better but they should remake the song where its sounds more produced with more feel to it from the bass and drum section. holla if ya feel me.

Jess | 10/16/2008, 6:27 pm EST

Hows this for a theory,

Maybe the overwhelming popularity of the song from Juno, the throngs of fair-weather pop music fans, and being thrust into the incestuous and soulless main stage of American entertainment sickens the MP’s and they agreed to do this because it pays them to ruin a song they already feel is ruined?

patrick | 11/13/2008, 11:44 pm EST

I say congrats to them…without any real talent I’ll wager this is the most $$ they’ll ever see.

Jen | 11/19/2008, 9:53 pm EST

Okay, I agree, the original song by The Moudly Peaches is way better. It sucks that the Atlantis people fucked it up, but there really isn’t a reason to make such a huge deal out of it.

Mark | 11/21/2008, 11:26 am EST

Wow! I’m 52 years old and I’ve never been so impressed with a commercial. The song was fantastic. I’m glad I found this post so I can listen to it whenever I like. (I know, strange isn’t it. That’s what my wife said, LOL.) The ad worked. We have two young boys, and were goin’!!!

dfd | 11/29/2008, 12:44 pm EST

i went to atlantis twice it is awesome but the moldy peaches really decribe it in the ads i mean WOW it is awesome to if u want a awesome vacation this is the place to go

PeeWee | 12/21/2008, 10:50 pm EST

Been ther nine times and am dying to get back there..Most amazing place in the world…

jorge regula | 4/5/2009, 9:53 pm EST

At least it wasn’t jorge regula.

zach | 4/20/2009, 5:43 pm EST

What a bunch of sell outs… It really could have been done so much more tastefully. Now the song is ruined for most fans, I’m sure.

Anonymous | 5/20/2009, 7:10 pm EST

I’m not mad at Kimya (Adam’s another story, fuck that douchenozzle) since this was done largely as a concession to other members of the MP’s, and I guess her being able to help her parents out while they’re in a rough spot made it an easier pill to swallow. I know if my parents were in a bind I’d be more inclined to consider selling one of my paintings to Carl Rove.

Josh | 6/23/2009, 8:16 pm EST

I think that song with the stupid kid singing has got to be one of the most annoying things I have ever heard, and I don’t care who wrote it. The ad is so totally tasteless, shallow, insincere and full of itself that it makes me want to vomit every time I hear it.

tuffsuff | 7/21/2009, 6:02 pm EST

At first I was appalled because that music represents what some bloated resort could never be.

After some thought I figured the moldy peaches seem to write songs without much care about being “acceptable” so why should they care now, even to those who love them the most? It takes a certain kind of punk to sell out gracefully. I’m not saying they are those kinds of punks, but who knows? Why should they freak out and try to protect some 10 year old song from the fame it deserves anyway? Don’t us as fans and connoisseurs of music who found the moldy peaches so long ago have other interests by now?

It’s true though, that song may not sound the same again.

jessika aka houston | 8/17/2009, 2:46 pm EST

it ant a bad song at all!, i like dis comercial!

erizzy | 10/18/2009, 10:18 pm EST
