Jason Castro: “It’s Nice To Be Doing Something Different”

5/14/08, 5:25 pm EST

Last week’s American Idol castoff Jason Castro stopped by our office to chat about his time on the show, the upcoming Idol tour and his plans for an album. He also offered an explanation for his “Mr. Tambourine Man” lyric fumble during last week’s broadcast: “I think I learn slower than others,” he laughs. “I usually just take my time, spending a week learning an song and connecting with it. I like the connection in music, and I didn’t have time to make that connection last week.”

“At this point, the competition is dependent on who goes home,” Castro adds. “Even if someone messed up before, their performance was still better than another singer. Now everyone is really good and really talented, so it’s like, ‘Who’s going to mess up?’”

While he was admittedly still tired from his post-show media blitz, Castro was also visibly relieved to not be singing three songs tonight. “It’s nice to be doing something different, and not stressing,” he says. “My biggest worry now is that I’ll say something stupid.”

Not that he’ll necessarily be stress-free in the near future; after a cameo in the audience during tonight’s results show, Castro begins rehearsals for the finale tomorrow and starts tour rehearsals on June 1st. “They’re letting us have more input,” he says of the tour, adding each performer will get to sing three songs each. Castro says he’s considering Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” (his audition song at home and during Hollywood week) and his ukulele rendition of “Over the Rainbow.”

After the tour, Castro says he wants to take some time off and create material for an upcoming album. No deals have been confirmed, but Castro says he’s been taking a look at producers of people he likes, including Ray Lamontagne and Ben Harper. “But I don’t even know how you get in touch with those people,” he laughs. “We’ll see if they want to work.”

Though Castro says he didn’t walk away from Idol with a best friend, he certainly acquired a legion of devoted fans, the Dreadheads. “My fans came up with the idea to send me postcards, and I’d get at least 50 a day from all over the world,” he says. “I also got 150 balloons whenever I was sick, and a life size stuffed black panther. Everyone who sees it gets scared — it was sitting on the floor when David Archuleta opened the door and he jumped!”

One thing not on his horizon is school — Castro’s newfound fame has finally given him the chance to put it off for a while, something he says his parents are okay with. “I think what American Idol does is let people know who you are,” he says. “And now that people have heard who Jason Castro is, maybe they’ll take a listen. That’s all I want.”

I just absolutely adore Jason Castro — my favorite singer, musician, and celebrity of all time
. I have listened to every song of his thousands of times. They never get old to me. Instead, they get better every time I hear them. I just want to listen to him EVERY SINGLE DAY. (and I do)

JASON IS SO CHARMING, THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FACE OF A MAN I’VE EVER SEEN!!!

Anonymous | 6/7/2008, 2:48 pm EST

I am a big Jason Castro fan and can’t wait to hear what he comes up with when he makes his own CD. I was disappointed that he was unable to wow us with any more songs and wished that the format for American Idol didn’t change when it go nearer to the end. I would prefer to have a shorter show with fewer songs, and have the songs be real quality than fill up time with rushed less than ideal music. I am sure that all of the contestants would prefer this as well. I really wanted to keep hearing the music that Jason was able to make. I listen to the downloads on my i-pod and keep going back to them over and over. They make me calm and help me on my long commute. I only wish there were more of them. I am waiting with much anticipation for more music from Jason.

shelbytex | 6/5/2008, 11:45 pm EST

I had to get my daughter to show me how to use Itunes just so I could listen to Jason’s music. She’s 20something, I’m 50ish, and my mom is in her 80s and we’re all waiting to buy Jason’s cd.

phyllis patton harrison | 6/5/2008, 3:28 pm EST

54 year old female who will buy Jason’s CD. Love his music and style. My group of friends supported David Cook and Jason Castro and we have the money to buy the CD’s.

Amy | 6/4/2008, 5:25 pm EST

Jason Castro is SO my idol…i dont understand why people wouldn’t vote for him to let him stay, but i get it, it can be stressful to learn 3 songs, 1 week.

I LOVE YOU JASON!

Diane | 6/2/2008, 8:40 am EST

Go Jason! Can’t wait to buy your CD - I’m wearing out the Itunes songs. I listen to them everyday! We need more music from you!!! I’m going to the Idol concert on August 5th - can’t wait! Another very proud dreadhead # 2550!

Go Jason! Looking very forward to hearing any songs you come out with — be they yours or someone else’s. You would make the song yours. Love to hear you sing.

the shrub | 5/30/2008, 7:27 am EST

Jason has a very different voice. It is very pure and clean compared to the rest of this year’s contestants. He puts amazing emotion into all of his songs. I love rock and metal but his version of hallelujah has to be my favorite song this year… beware of this boy, america!

UrbanCowgirl | 5/29/2008, 3:17 am EST

Anybody who questions Jason Castro’s dedication should know that he did a tv interview here in Dallas saying that he’s been spending part of his “vacation time” between the Finale of American Idol and ths start of the Tour rehearsals in a recording studio working on new material demos. He has less than 2 weeks “off” (and not even that if you count the fact he’s still doing media interviews during this “off” time and local performances here in Dallas!) and he’s choosing to WORK on his music. I think that shows how serious and focused he is and how much he loves making music. He’s also been doing things to reach out to his fans and keep them interested. He’s already gotten more than 1 million hits on his MySpace page and it’s been open less than a week. Jason seems to want to make quality music, his fans want to hear that music and a record label would be lucky to sign him.

kayla | 5/28/2008, 2:03 pm EST

I’m so glad Jason has an album in mind! Anyone else thinking the next Daughtry?

There is not much to say after reading all the comments… . Simply: Jason is fantastic! People are so blessed by listening to him. Love his voice and would attend his concert if he comes to Canada.

Lynn | 5/26/2008, 4:50 pm EST

Jason is the REAL thing. So far he’s unspoiled and true to himself, and I hope and pray he stays that way. I’ve watched AI since season 2 and have never been moved to vote until Jason. The big voices, the affected performances don’t do it for me. Jason has stuck a chord (and it pleased the Lord!!!) with so many of us - and I believe he will have a lasting career being himself and doing his kind of music. Love his voice and soulfulness. Love his heart.

Maria | 5/25/2008, 7:38 am EST

I haven’t bought a CD from a new recording artist in years. I can’t wait to buy Jason’s. He is AMAZING.
He appeals to all age groups and if he sings in spanish he will get the latin amarican market too. He will be a phenomenon.

HallelujahGal | 5/25/2008, 1:40 am EST

I work at a large Christian music label so I know music. It’s literally my job to know music and to spot “potential”. I was a fan of Jason Castro’s all season but for me his last 2 performances were way “off” and I was bitterly disappointed, wondering if I had mis-judged him and his abilities. However, that all changed when I witnessed what was one of the best performances I have seen on 7 seasons of American Idol during the Finale. His rendidtion of “Hallelujah” absolutely took my breath away. It’s very rare to see such a young performer convey that much emotion. Jason completely owned that song and commanded the stage. He literally brought people to tears. It reminded me that he does indeed have extraordinary talent, particularly when he’s in his element and singing his genre of song. When that happens, he’s brilliant and moves people like only truly great artists can. He’s only been singing for 2 years. With some direction and guidance from an experienced producer and manager, this 21-year-old kid could be phenominal. I am lining up with millions of others who are hoping he gets that opportunity.

Elaine | 5/25/2008, 1:17 am EST

HI, I am a woman but would like to speak for a lot of men I personaly know. My dad, brother, sons, friends, ect, bc these guys would all rather watch tv than write out thier feelings. They are safe and secure having me speak for them. They and I love Jason Castro. My husband said “buy that boys music” we have everything so far. Need more. He hasn’t shown the slightest interest in any other season’ idols music. Just the opposite. I have three blind friends who do not watch AI so do not know any of the contestants. Had them listen to Jason - I now have orders to let them know as soon as he has a cd out. My mother listened to the cd I made and ordered me to make her one. I did.

So I would say yes, people are more than ready for his type of sound. We still love all our old stuff and some of the new stuff but we want more Jason Castro.

As for AI. We all understand that it’s bussiness. We really are not so dense as they may think. What is wrong with being upfront? We know it’s about money and power, duh. So if they want money then give us what we want, we want Jason. They want power, same answer.

Thank you for allowing comments.

DH#2086 | 5/24/2008, 9:46 pm EST

Absolutely LOVE this kid. Have all his iTunes downloads on CD and iPod. I have not purchased a CD since Bruce Springsteen’s post 9/11 CD and used to only use my iPod during workouts. NOW, I listen to Jason all the time, never mind sitting in traffic because I always have this angel singing in my car. I cannot wait to BUY a Jason Castro CD. This was the second season that we watched AI in my house, the first time we ever voted, and, yes, I did get a little carried away. I have bever posted anything on line before, never commented on a message board, never joined a fan club, and never wanted to know every detail about a musician before. I would be embarrassed but my kids think that I am a better person since ‘meeting’ Jason, and I have to agree.

Thanks Rolling Stone for a great article. Jason’s many fans would love to see more!

Karen Sue | 5/24/2008, 1:55 pm EST

Jason, You are an incredible person. Your voice is the most soothing, sweetest, mesmerizing and unique I have ever heard. When you sing a song it makes me forget about any troubles in my life or in the the world. I just feel so happy and peaceful when you sing. I made a cd of all your idol songs and your original songs. Then I made four more copies to put in my 5 disc stero. Instead of sleeping with the tv on low volume all night, I let your voice lullaby me to sleep. I seem to be more laid back now because of your music and your attitude. You are an awesome songwriter too. When driving listening to you sing, I don’t mind the terrible traffic, I’m not in a hurry, I’m just so happy. I am 48 and have always been a music fanatic loving a wide variety of genres. From hard rock to folk to blues. I am a die-hard Zeppelin and Rolling Stones fan. I put you right up there with them! This is also my first comment on the internet! I find myself spending alot of time reading posts about you and am really estatic about how many fans you have. You are an inspiration to many. I know you are already a huge success and can’t wait to see how far you’re going with your music. I know I’ll be there every step of the way!

Alison | 5/23/2008, 10:53 pm EST

I am a 60 something grandma and just love all of Jason’s songs. I have bought his I-tunes and have downloaded all his pre-idol songs and his original songs and listen to his music everyday. I will definely buy his cd.

I was SO happy to hear Jason sing Hallelujah in the finale. It was such a moving performance! I’m glad that I downloaded all of his recordings from iTunes before they were removed so that I have them to tide me over until Jason gets to release his first CD. Hopefully I will not have too long to wait.

g-ma of 2 | 5/23/2008, 3:11 pm EST

As a follow up to my previous post, has anyone had the privilege of listening to some of the songs he’s already written?? Really good stuff. His song So Fast is my absolute favorite. Haunting and beautiful.

g-ma of 2 | 5/23/2008, 3:03 pm EST

Great article, RS. I have every confidence that Jason will get a record deal. The “time” for his style of music and soothing voice is coming back around and we are more than ready for it. Come on record “execs” give this boy a call and get him in the studio. And, Jason, when you do get in there, take your time, fall in love with the song the way you need to do. It’ll be worth the wait.

ann | 5/22/2008, 4:05 pm EST

I really enjoyed watching and listening to Jason. I hope he gets a recording deal. He has a very nice voice.

OlderHoney | 5/21/2008, 12:42 pm EST

Thank you for that great RS article about Jason Castro. You gotta love the guy. I am a baby boomer dreadhead and was hooked by Jason’s charisma early in the competition(if that’s what you want to call it). His voice and singing style remind me of a time when the world was all about peace and love. Although he is a beautiful young man on the outside, it’s his inner beauty and joyous spirit that captivates most of his fans…he gives me hope for the younger generations. He is a Godsend and I wish him the best in all of his endeavors. Love ya, Jason, can’t wait for your CD!

Kathy | 5/21/2008, 12:17 am EST

Yet another 50+ married mom here, I thought my devotion to Jason’s songs and singing made me unique–guess not! I also tuned in this year to see Jason each week and the show lost a lot of appeal for me when he was voted off. But I very much enjoyed watching his joyous exit performance! Also waiting for his album…

Brumfelsia | 5/20/2008, 4:05 pm EST

I’m 52. Just to be able to listen to Jason’s music I purchased my first Ipod and it contains only his songs. I’ve always loved music and have had many famous favoite singers, none of them have had the effect Jason’s music has had on me. He’s sytle is incredibly unique, his music addictive.

Lynzi | 5/19/2008, 11:45 pm EST

You are all absolutely right with your positive comments.Jasons uniqueness is what made him the best and what lost him his spot,in my opinion.I agree,he was way to good for this type of competition, but at least with him not winning, they wont get to “mold” him into just another singer, and overexpose him and work him until he is completely washed out and chucked on the used ex idol pile.I just hope there is a record producer out there smart enough to grab him and give him a great contract and let him do his own thing. It will be a commercial success because he is so popular. They dont need to change him at all.We like what he is,a totally refreshing change from the screamers and rockers and dime a dozen clones which is all thats on offer at the moment. How often do you immediately recognise a singer when they release a new song on the radio?Usually,I say “hey, isnt that..and list 5 possibles. That wont be happening with anything Jason releases.
I am no teenage teenybopper,my kids all heckle me for watching Idol and cheering on Jason,he appeals to all ages obviously.
Go Jason, put out an amazing cd and show them all.
I am only still watching Idol to see if the manufactured David wins over the loud brash arogant David, and to see Jason when he comes back on the final show.

Lori | 5/19/2008, 8:43 pm EST

Where’s the spell check? Let me try this again Edited version..
Jason on AI is like trying to sell a slow home cooked gormet meal in a fast food restaurant. The people going there are looking for over processed chemical layden slop, so they won’t really appreciate the home cooked meal made from scratch listed on the menu.

tambaloo | 5/19/2008, 7:30 pm EST

Jason Castro has changed the face of American Idol. I never watched the show because of its cheesiness- but happened upon Jason’s performance of Daydream and have been consumed every since. Jason’s voice is sultry and rich and he weaves emotion into every song he sings. He is honest, kind and courageous. He is funny- a joy to listen to and to watch. The fact that this show treated Jason so badly is a travesty. He will be the one that outlasts and outsells them all. I guarantee it.

dashing4 | 5/19/2008, 7:24 pm EST

Thanks for a great read Rolling Stone! Jason was my favorite like everyone else here. He is my type of music and loved that he stayed true to who he is and his style. He was too cool for AI anyway! I have all his Itunes and need some more songs of his for the Ipod..hope he makes a record soon.

lovethedreds | 5/19/2008, 7:06 pm EST

The last music fan club I joined was the Beattles……and that was 42 years ago. I’ve not been so moved by music since then until I heard Jason’s rendition DayDreamingBoy. Can’t wait for more songs from Jason just to be able to hear something other then the ones I have now and have coompletely worn out. Good luck Jason, dreadhead 1592.

castroholic87 | 5/19/2008, 6:33 pm EST

I am 39 and I love Jason! His voice and his looks are incredible! He brings such realness to his music and delivers it with great emotion. His voice is sultry, sexy and soothing. Romantic and relaxing is how I’d describe it. He is the best thing I have seen come out of American Idol. I wish him the best of luck with his career.

ROCK_N | 5/19/2008, 5:58 pm EST

I am a 54 yr old grandmother who has NEVER joined a fanclub before but something about Jason just touched my heart. So many before me have posted his many attributes so I will just say that I am proud to be Dreadhead #2501

hooked_on_Jason! | 5/19/2008, 5:42 pm EST

Jason Castro is amazing and unlike any other American Idol contestant he isn’t only a performer with a big voice, but someone whose genuiness truly comes through in the music. We’ve seen the rocker, the diva, and the pretty boy before–it’s too bad that the judges closed their eyes to what they ask for each season: someone unique.

I am convinced that AI is rigged or that the judges use their opinions to sway voters because:

1. Paula put down Jason before he sang
2. David Archuletta sings the same kind of songs each week and is not reprimanded
3. The producer chose awful songs for Archuletta and Syesha to sing, which only continued to highlight David Cook who is like Chris Daughtry which means $$$ for AI.

I hope someone in the media world investigates AI because something wasn’t right–there was a definite theme of favoritism towards the davids unfortunately.

Jason was amazing, and so many are so excited to see what he does in the future. Thank you Jason for not only being entertaining, but for being humble and real.

texred | 5/19/2008, 11:16 am EST

Another 40-something who’s a Jason fan. There was no more interesting or passionate performer on the show this year, and he has a beautiful voice for the kindof music he prefers–he CAN sing ballads AND folk-rock, which people of any generation can relate to. Belting and runs are overrated, IMHO. Waiting for Jason’s album, praying he’ll stay true to the music he loves, and wearing out my i-tunes in the meantime.

oldieslovehim2 | 5/19/2008, 10:12 am EST

Jason will sell his music if someone will give him a listen.I’m a 47 yr old professional not a teeny bopper. Anyone that doesn’t like his style hasn’t listen to him. America needs a sweet spirit like him singing to us and being a good role model for our children

Lynzi | 5/18/2008, 8:24 pm EST

Finally,I have found some women who agree with me think Jason Castro was the talent on American Idol. Its so boring without him, every week we were waiting to see what Jason would sing and now its just not fun any more.I do so wish he could have sung songs that suited his voice and not all the stupid ridiculous theme night stuff.I would love to hear him sing You Are So Beautiful. Its his type of song.Where can I hear Jason singing his own original song mentioned here?I cant wait for his cd to be released. Finally,a new fresh face and voice in the music world. He was way too good to win.Jeff Buckleys rendition of Hallelujah used to depress me,Jason makes it such an uplifting song.I would listen to Jason over any other singer around at the moment, even if they remember all their words.Who cares, with his looks and voice,I am surprised anyone noticed.Jason remains My Idol.

Eddie | 5/18/2008, 1:27 am EST

Great article on Jason Castro. When he’s not constrained by Idols ridiculous scheduling and horriffic song choice requirements and he’s allowed to sing in his own style and genre, he blows everyone out of the water. JC may be “slow” and need more time to perfect his craft but that’s what true artistry is all about. Hopefully, some music produer will dig it, reaize Castro can be hugely successful as a singer/songwriter and sign him pronto!

sKay | 5/18/2008, 12:18 am EST

I am a Jason fan from the first time I heard him sing Day Dreamin. I agree with all of the positive comments that have already been posted. I would like to add a comment, the two David’s can sing, but I don’t think they will have longivity - David A will last until the nest tween idol comes along and David C is just joing to get lost in the mix because there are so many better rockers out there. Now Jason is different - he is unique, good to listen to and to watch and he just draws you into whatever he is singing and when he smiles you smile along with him. I know I will buy his cd as soon as it comes out. AI really missed it this year, but that is better for Jason. Good luck to him and in his future because I know it will be very bright for him.

julie | 5/17/2008, 10:35 pm EST

Another 40-something Mom of 2 who LOVES Jason! His voice is just magical and I can’t wait to hear him in person at their first concert in Phx. on July 1st! Bought my tix yesterday and he’s one of the big reason why we are going this year. GOOD LUCK Jason!

Lea | 5/17/2008, 8:48 pm EST

Jason…you’re the real deal. You truly want to make sure whatever you do is authentic and true to who you are as an artist and I admire that! You’re beauty shines in and out and I look forward to seeing and hearing you on tour and to your upcoming CD!!!

dudes-
all in one year, this guy managed to FORGOT THE WORDS to a bob dylan song, murder reggae, and tortured us with a painful rendition of one of the corniest broadway songs of all time. cant you just let us forget about him?

Jacqueline | 5/17/2008, 2:08 pm EST

I have not been so fascinated and moved by a performer since my youth…another 50 plus mom here with five kids. I can’t wait for his CD…and content myself in the meantime with youtube performances. Don’t know how to do the itunes business…lol…got to get with it. Jason appeals to all ages, it is obvious. He has soul and genuine character that speaks to me. His voice is filled with nuance and tugs at my heart. After reading this article, I was not amazed at the following outpouring of affection and respect for his music. We all recognize his talent. He deserves it all. American Idol has lost its lustre now he is gone.

Another 50-yr-old here! There is singing what’s in front of you, and interpreting and feeling the song that’s in front of you. Jason interprets and feels music, which set him apart from 90% of the cast on this year’s show. I don’t believe Jason will be the one to make contact with producers - they will come calling soon enough. Can’t wait for the tour and Jason’s CD.

Dreadhead #1824 ~ Susan | 5/17/2008, 3:01 am EST

Thanks for the article! I would LOVE to see Jason on the cover!! The purity of his voice is captivating. I can’t seem to get enough. Right now I keep my play list going on my computer whenever I’m home. (My husband thinks I’m crazy…perhaps I am) I just can’t get enough. His voice, choice of songs, and goofy mellow personality make him so intriguing.

Gabby | 5/17/2008, 12:22 am EST

Jason’s music truly is a breath of fresh air. I never watched Idol past the auditions because no one ever interested me enough. I am so glad I decided to watch Idol when there was nothing else on and Jason sang “Michelle”!!! THIS is the kind of soulful, emotional singing I’ve been looking for. Jason’s original songs are absolutely amazing–I wouldn’t be surprised if the record companies are lining up to sign him once he’s free from Idol! Can’t wait to buy his CDs!

virgie | 5/17/2008, 12:11 am EST

Will Jason ever get to read all his fan mails ? I read once that Brooke said you guys get sacks of mail. By now Jason must already have a Secretariat attending to all these matters.

I am past 60 yrs, a grandmother , and I can’t go to bed every night without hearing his songs. It is not true that Jason’s fans are the young girls only.

Sure look forward to your albums here in the Philippines. Jason, please tell us that our messages get to you.

Donna | 5/16/2008, 11:46 pm EST

Jason has a fresh new sound that we desperatly need these days. I am so tired of the loud singers who yell their songs. And the rockers who have that hoarse sound. He so reminds me of my youth listening to James Taylor, Paul Simon and Cat Stevens.

I will be buying anything that he puts out. Bring it on Jason, we love you!!

I am another 50 year old fan of Jason’s. I too have never before left a comment about a contestant. At first I did’nt know who he was because they never showed his audition. When I heard he was a Texas A&M student I became more attentive to him since I live near College Station and my daughters attend A&M. He absolutely amazed me. What a great performer. I love his laid-back style. Gig em Jason!

Jason has changed American Idol forever and the best contestant in all 7 seasons. He just draws you in with his performances. I can’t wait until he releases his first CD. He is the most real, raw, unpolished contestant AI has ever had. Way to go Jason!!! You kept me watching!!!! I hope someone recognizes his amazing gift.

Charlene | 5/16/2008, 9:04 pm EST

His is the only Idol album I’ll buy this season. Love him!

Daisy | 5/16/2008, 9:03 pm EST

Many of Jason’s fans, including myself, have never been members of a fan club before. However, Jason is unique and has that it factor that draws people in. I just had to find out more about him. I was so excited to learn that he is a great songwriter and just a great person. I can’t wait to buy his album!!!!

millie | 5/16/2008, 8:53 pm EST

Jason is a breath of fresh air. I’m so tired of artists who scream. He tells a musical story in a beautiful way. I will buy any album he makes.

Leilane Cozzi | 5/16/2008, 8:51 pm EST

Can we have Jason on the cover next time??? PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE….
I’m SURE Annie Leibowitz would do an amazing job with his perfect face ,eyes and body.
Bet it will break records in sales.
Think about it!

drgraves | 5/16/2008, 5:20 pm EST

I have never ever been an American Idol Fan but when my sister called me earlier this season and told me to turn on the TV because there was a young kid who looked just like my son-I did. I have been hooked ever since.
You are inspiring, humble, talented, charismatic, genuine, unique and a true breath of fresh air to the music industry.
There is no doubt that you have enlisted a group of supporters who will never forget you.
Go RED RAIDERS! Sorry Jason but still a Texas Tech Red Raider.

Vannessa | 5/16/2008, 3:35 pm EST

Jason, I’m a fan of all kinds of music, but have never been part of a fanclub of anyone’s. However, I am now proud Dreadhead #2246!!! :) Idol just isn’t the same without you. I’ve watched all 7 seasons, but you’ve been the best. I’ve resorted to watching youtube videos constantly where my 3 year old peeks over my shoulder and says “There’s Jason Casserole”!

As a College Station resident, I’m sad that we won’t be seeing you strolling across campus, peeking in at Freebirds, or playing at Sweet Eugene’s, but I hope you don’t completely outgrow us. Maybe you can do a concert on the plaza at Kyle Field some football weekend!

I wish you the best of luck in the music industry and can’t wait for your CDs and to see you in concert. Stay true to yourself and your Lord as you become a giant success. We are waiting, watching and praying for you!

WOW! I’m teary eyed reading all of the outpour of love for Jason…he is so special and unique and just what the music industry needs…
I truly believe that American Idol missed the boat on him but oh well, their loss is another’s (and our) gain! :) JASON is one AMAZING AND TALENTED artist! I can’t wait to get his CD!!!

Lou | 5/16/2008, 2:15 pm EST

sign Jason up….I love his voice

poisnivy | 5/16/2008, 1:27 pm EST

Jason Castro has the most AMAZING, unique voice I have ever heard! I instantly fell in love with it. Can’t wait to see him on tour and especially for his first cd to come out!! I will be waiting at the store for it!

Can’t wait for the day that Jason’s CD comes out. In the mean time I’m listening to the disc from ITunes that I downloaded. I play it all the time. I actually forget where I’m going when I’m driving listening to his songs. I love him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who does he remind you of? | 5/16/2008, 5:50 am EST

When I saw Jason Castro on AI I immediately thought of John Travolta, imagine him ever being in a movie as John Travolta’s son.

Leslie | 5/16/2008, 4:51 am EST

I don’t know exactly what it is about Jason Castro, but he is captivating. His personna is just fascinating to watch and his voice is rich and unique. He is something new and fresh and soulful. His delivery of music pulls one in . He has the potential to be at the top of his field. The tour will give him experience and exposure. He will have time to develop his talent, and I truly believe we are looking at a ground breaking super star. He just has “it”.

FriscoDJ | 5/16/2008, 3:42 am EST

Working as a Radio Host/DJ at an Adult Contemporary station in the San Francisco area, I’m very intrigued by this article on Castro and overwhelming response. We’ve been seeing a shift here with more people asking for mellow, folk/pop-type music. I thought it might just be a California-thing but it appears this is nationwide trend. I can tell you when we “talked Idol” there we heard from alot of callers supporting Castro. Personally, I felt he was “on” about 75% of the time. To win something like American Idol, it has to be closer to 90%. But I will say when Castro was “on” he was absolutely brillant. His music was full of soul. He has a smooth voice and a warm, engaging stage presence. He’s easy to watch. I will be very interested to see how he does on the tour. If he steps it up, he has the potential to become a Star.

50-yr old fan | 5/16/2008, 1:20 am EST

I’m 50 and think Jason Castro is going to be a huge success in the music industry. He has that IT that you can’t define but you know it when you see it and hear it. My husband and kids have used I-tunes for years but I never downloaded anything until Jason came along. He didn’t fit the AI norm, but I’m sure glad they put him through so that we could enjoy his talent. Count me as another middle aged woman who has the $$ to spend on all of Jason’s cd’s.

JSNLVR dreadhead #2297 | 5/16/2008, 12:03 am EST

Jason,
I know to you we must all be crazy and it seems that its a little hard for you to deal with but realize that you have touched so many people in so many ways we all just want to say thank you. You have such a gift with your voice and to share that with us we feel privledged. It’s not very often you hear of someone who seems to be a truly “good” person. Don’t let any of this ever change who you are.

Another Mom with a crush | 5/15/2008, 11:28 pm EST

I am 39 years old and I adore Jason. His eyes and smile are incredible. I downloaded all of his music, but look forward to something written for him. He is an natural talent with a great sense of humor.

Paula | 5/15/2008, 11:01 pm EST

Whoops! In the comment below I meant voice of course.

Paula | 5/15/2008, 10:58 pm EST

Jason has a glorious, mesmerizing vice, an adorable personality and oh yeah, he is gorgeous. He has such a unique style and I love his falsetto. I can’t wait until he can put out the kind of cd he would like to put out. I only HOPE it will have a longer version of “Hallelujah” on it. “Hallelujah” was the first song I heard Jason sing and after that I was hooked.

schulz | 5/15/2008, 10:17 pm EST

Jason Castro is a force to be reckoned with. Given the right musical atmosphere, he can soar to great heights. He has a unique voice, a very likeable personality, and an unforgettable face.

Diana | 5/15/2008, 8:44 pm EST

Looking SO forward to Jason’s CD and the tour this summer. I’m delighted you plan to sing “Over the Rainbow.” Please also plan on singing the full-length “Hallelujah.” As far as I’m concerned, yours is the definitive version.

CaliforniaPoppy | 5/15/2008, 7:56 pm EST

Rolling Stone — THANK YOU for this article! It is refreshing to have journalists focus on what Jason has to say about his music. (Instead of on his cool dreads and pretty blue eyes, that many in the media world seem to think is all there is to him.) Jason Castro definitely has “it”! Whatever “it” is, it makes people want to buy his music and keep listening to it. Having someone concerned about artistry and connecting with the songs he sings is sorely needed in todoay’s world of mass-produced BLAND mainstream music. I am anxiously standing by to buy his CDs! Meanwhile, I wear out my iTunes!

dashing4 | 5/15/2008, 6:58 pm EST

Thanks Rolling Stone for a great read on Jason. Can’t wait for his record! I have all of his songs on Itunes, but come June, I’ll be needing some new material..but if its all I have, I will keep playing just to hear JC sing.

JCDreadLover | 5/15/2008, 6:47 pm EST

Wow!! I’m another 50 something mom who absolutely adores Jason. I was hooked from the first song and am not interested in idol since he left last week. I have never bought a CD from any American Idol performers but I will buy anything this talented young man puts out. He has that something “different” and he’s just so cute!!! He seems very real. He is my favorite person EVER on American Idol and I watched from the beginning. I have never even posted a comment on the internet before–that’s how much I like him!!!

Jojo, Quebec, Canada | 5/15/2008, 5:09 pm EST

Just purchased your studio recordings on I-Tune. Your voice is absolutely mesmerizing! Loved the spanish part on Fragile. Hope you will have a CD soon (please, don`t wait to long as I am an old lady!!). Best of luke Jason.

Jason,
I’m so happy you received the postcards from around the world, maybe some of them were mine sent from Mexico!
I can’t wait to listen to your first album where you will be recording what you really want to play! I’ll buy it the first second and I will gift my friends with it too!
So happy you know how loved you are by us the dreadheads. You mentioned in another interview that “That’s the kind of fans I want, people that are really moved by the music.” You need to know that we are really moved by you, by your voice and style. For us you’re perfect and our International Idol, not only American!
Much love,

To Choopy - whose the loser. If you don’t like Jason why are you on this site. Why spend the time writing about someone you don’t like. Jason was the best that Idol ever had. The most original. I wish him all the best in his career.

Peggy | 5/15/2008, 3:04 pm EST

AI are fools for not recognizing what an amazing talent JASON is.

The way he sings and connects with songs is so refreshing in today’s cookie-cutter music industry.

They way he touches so many people with his singing is amazing.

JASON has integrity, class,talent,-has an amazing voice-beautiful inside and out, unbelievable sexy.
I can not wait for his cd. I have dowmloaded everything I could find him singing.
I love his original songs SO FAST and SOMEDAY.
p.s.
NO ONE can convince me that SYESHA had more votes than JASON!!

Mary Ann | 5/15/2008, 2:38 pm EST

I became a fan of Jason’s the minute he started to sing Daydream, I absolutly love his voice and personallity, not to mention he is gorgeous. I am glad to see other mom’s on here because I am a little embarrassed that I am a 53 year old mom and have a crush on this very talanted cutie pie. I voted for him every Tuesday nite with two phones in my hand for 2 hours, Jason I am so happy for you and that we have been able to enjoy your talent. I pray that you get everything you want out of life, you are a truly wonderful joy to watch and I can’t wait to see you in South Florida in August. God Bless You

Jason Castro is an amazing performer. He knows how to emote a song in the tradition of Bob Dylan but with the added bonus that the tone of his voice is very melodic. I can’t wait to hear his CD and I’m hoping whoever he works with is someone who truly gets what a diamond in the rough he is.

Jason,
You are the musician so many of us have been waiting for. I am 36 years old and never watched Idol before this season and I had never voted. You are the reason so many of us watched. You truly understand the message that music can bring to people and you proved it with Somewhere Over the Rainbow and Haleluiah. God Bless you and the genuine person you are. Unique is an understatement. You, my friend are the whole package!

Jayne | 5/15/2008, 1:02 pm EST

Jason Castro is like all 4 Beatles rolled into one when they were in their 20’s. He has a laid-back goofy charm like Ringo. He has an old soul spirituality like George. Like Paul, he is cute and the girls love him. Most importantly, like John, he has that rare and innate ability to reveal his soul when he sings. I could listen to him all day and believe that he has a great deal to contribute to the music world.

PCN | 5/15/2008, 12:49 pm EST

As a 40 something mother of 3, I think Jason’s unique style was great for AI. I was wish he would have made it to the hometown visit. He now has the exposure he needed and he has a fan base that will take him to the top. God Bless you Jason, stay true to who you are.

Merryann | 5/15/2008, 12:46 pm EST

Just forget his looks though he is so charming. Just listen to his music. His songs move me so much everytime I listen. He sings with his soul and heart and I am surely amazed at his talent. He is a real artist and I am looking forward to his CD in the near future. He is a whole package, his charisma, his humble attitude, his belief and his heart in music. Thank for his try out in AI so people like me feel his inspiration. Music has found Jason and through Jason I finally realize what music is all about - a touch of heart and a touch of soul.

Lisa | 5/15/2008, 12:29 pm EST

Great singer. Original talent. Worth listening to. He’s a nice guy too and it doesn’t hurtme makes me and my grilfriends wet our pants.

freebird | 5/15/2008, 12:17 pm EST

Looked forward to every performance, bought all itune recordings as well as “Clumsy” and would buy his CD in a heartbeat. I love when he hits the high notes and his entire interpretation of a song. His attitude of “it’s okay in the end and if it’s not okay, it’s not the end!” sums his approach to life as well as music. Idol’s not the same w/o him.

dragonfan | 5/15/2008, 12:02 pm EST

I am an avid AI watcher but I have enjoyed Jason Casto’s singing more than anyone I have seen on the show. I have all of his songs on CD in my car. I can’t wait for him to put an album out. I like the fact that he stays true to himself. That has to be hard when everyone around you “sells themselves” for a win.
keep up the music Jason!!

DAVID ARCHULETA FOR THE WIN!!!!!!

Jason has an “it” charisma and a beautiful aura. I love his voice and his kind of music…and can’t wait to buy his CD. Oh BTW I am not a teen but a mom with a 14 year old boy and I ask him to download Jason’s songs in his Ipod. I am going out to buy my own. Somehow there is something in this boy that compels and draws you to listen. I love his passion and that raw feeling that makes you fall in love to whatever he is singing. Of course it helps that he is good looking and sexy - we need this kind of artist!!! Please…we have so much trash in the entertainment industry…he is very refreshing, a ray of hope !!!
Oh, I have plenty of $$$ to spare for his music - so he is a good business.

Flaming H0m0 | 5/15/2008, 11:52 am EST

My goodness gracious! Jason is such a fine looking specimen, oh yes indeed! Yes girlfriends, he does deserve a recording contract. Such a beautiful voice, and such a masculine physique, mmmm mmm mmm. He is musically talented alright, and probably also in the bedroom, if you know what I mean, yeeoww! You can show me your talent any day of the week Jason my poopsy!

Lizbeth | 5/15/2008, 11:38 am EST

Thanks Rolling Stone for featuring Jason and for the picture! He is just the most stunningly beautiful man. Honestly, he’s almost perfect looking. You just can’t take your eyes off him. When I watched American Idol and they were all on stage I didn’t even see anyone else. My eyes were just drawn to him. Seems to have that effect on a lot of people. Sounds so humble in this article like he really doesn’t know how amazing he is. Not a conceited bone in his body. Can’t wait to see him on tour. July can’t come soon enough!

Laura | 5/15/2008, 11:15 am EST

Thanks for the article. I agree with many others–Jason was the best thing ever to happen to AI. How refreshing to see someone care more about the music than the outcome!
He is the first contestant that I actually voted for and have bought tickets to see him on tour–I can’t even believe I am going to an AI tour–LOL
Jason has a beuatiful and distinctive voice, phrases a lyric wonderfully, and most importantly, communicates the feeling of the song to the audience.
I am so happy that the meaningful singer/songwriter genre seems to be coming back around after years of manufactured music!
I hope Jason finds the appropriate label who will nuture his talents and I can’t wait for his CD! #1570

Fran | 5/15/2008, 11:11 am EST

“pt | 5/14/2008, 8:10 pm EST

Someone better give this kid a recording contract because I’m wearing out the itunes I downloaded. I listen every day, Just can’t get enough.”

Tell me about it! I keep checking the internet for new news… Sigh.

VegasBaby | 5/15/2008, 11:11 am EST

I’m an Entertainment Reporter in Vegas and I covered the Idols when they were here for the Love show a couple weeks ago. Poor Jason was mobbed by fans! I actually saw girls screaming, crying, grabbing at him, practically hyperventilating as he walked by. It was like the scenes you see of the “early Elvis”. Ironic thing is, I actually understood what all the fuss was about (which I can’t say for all of the entertainers I cover!). Jason is like a breath of fresh air in the current “teeny bopper” and “image saturated” music world. IMO, it’s always a greater achievement to do more with less and that’s the key to what Jason brings to both the stage and the recording studio. The Idols will be back in town for the tour. I’ll be covering that, too and thoroughly expect another well-deserved mob scene for Jason. I think the guy better get used to it!

magis | 5/15/2008, 11:10 am EST

to rollingstone, thanks for sharing a very small part of jason castro. as what jason said in one of his interviews, music is an extension of himself. to JASON, please share more of yourself through your music. we, you’re fans, for sure will be actively waiting for your cd’s!

Jakers | 5/15/2008, 11:04 am EST

A lot of my friends are musicians and singers, and one thing I know for sure is with his personality and talent, he’s someone I would love to have join us on a camping trips, ski trips, or at parties. He seems like a great person to be around (and he sings great, too!)

gailer | 5/15/2008, 11:00 am EST

Jason was the best idol ever! He was real and genuine in everthing he did and said. He will be a success in anything that he chooses to do because he is grounded and a positive person-the Jason haters are negative people who simply cannot understand a positive person like Jason.
Go Jason!!
Dreadhead #342!

Liza | 5/15/2008, 10:59 am EST

Jason Castro is an incredible find. AI may not appreciate him but his many, many fans do. In a world of constant rushing around, Jason is a magnet that makes you stop and listen. What more could you ask for in a artist. I love his perfect imperfections, his clear, raw voice and wonderful relaxed, sensual vibe. We’re all waiting patiently and impatiently to hear from him again.

Anonymous | 5/15/2008, 10:59 am EST

I agree with Maureen. Jason Castro was the best thing to ever happen to AI. It’s a shame they couldn’t see that but he’s better off without them. I’ve never voted until this year and that was all due to Jason. Can’t wait for your CD, I just know it’s going to be terrific. You have a fan for life right here.

Dreadhead #379 WHOOP!!

Billy | 5/15/2008, 10:55 am EST

Obviously, Castro appeals to the ladies but alot of us guys think he’s cool, too. I play guitar professionally myself and respect him as a musician. He’s the kind of dude I would enjoy hanging out and jamming with. He kept it real on American Idol. He and Cook were the only reasons I watched the show. Hopefully Castro will get a chance to put out a CD and live the dream. Rock on, man!

To Be Expected | 5/15/2008, 10:21 am EST

Guess some people like Choopy are just jealous of Jason…his talent, magic, looks and charm.

Unfortunately, Jason will have to prepare himself for that, but I know he will do fine, and doesn’t care what the negative people say.

Anyone, like Choopy who judges a book by its cover is a loser. Jason, and people close to him, all state he has never done drugs!

People like Choopy, love to feed into stereotypes, and those kind of people pollute our society!

GOOD RIDDENS!

JR | 5/15/2008, 10:20 am EST

Poor choopy who stuck a bean up your nose….
Jason Castro is awesome, alot of folks want to hear more out of him.. Travel in the Radio circles myself and most of my DJ friends can’t wait to get that voice on the air.

ADDICTED!!! | 5/15/2008, 10:10 am EST

Hey choopy…the only loser I see here is YOU! Jasons fans KNOW what real and good music is…You just cannot recognize it. We also recognize decent people, and you obviously must not be one of them.

In my time…I’VE PREDICTED AND SEEN THE POTENTIAL FOR THE BEST…TIME PROVED ME RIGHT, AND THEY ALL BECAME GREAT LEGENDS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY!

Jasons fans also know how to love and appreciate all genre’s of music, and artists, like Jason who can deliver it!

Furthermore…who you calling loser, loser? Many of Jasons fans, from what I can read, are good and successful people! Why are you here, if you insinuate to not being a loser?

LOL

Good day to you. Remember though, if you having nothing good to say, why stick around?

Choopy | 5/15/2008, 10:01 am EST

Damn, what a bunch of losers all you commentators are. Go listen to some real music of talented artists than this uneducated, pothead.

Jason!! Can’t wait for the album. If no one picks you up make your own! Your dreadheads will buy multiples. Thanks for putting up with the crap that is American Idol and sharing your music with us. You have a fan for live in San Antonio!

ADDICTED!!! | 5/15/2008, 9:59 am EST

I’m ADDICTED to JASON CASTRO! No lie…Every chance I get lately to play iTunes music, JASON IS THE ONE I’m listening to, and adore watching on the iTune videos! My eyes and ears just cannot stop feasting!!!!

If I was his girlfriend, I couldn’t stop planting kisses and hugs on him. If I was his mother, I couldn’t stop planting kisses and hugs on him. If I was his best friend, I would feel blessed. I don’t know what it is, but with Jason, it feels magical. He is magical! I’m going through withdrawals not seeing more of Jason on AI…I have turtle slow internet dial up, so I could not view all his latest interviews in so many places. I need another fix of him! Yes, I’m addicted! I will be the future proud owner of ALL his upcoming music!

I hope in all this fame, he stays as down to earth, humble and sweet.
People like him, is what this world badly needs right now. True inspiration!

I also love all of Jasons fans!!! THEY ARE GOOD PEOPLE!!! I can tell, by all of their posts here.

Bless you all!

Sorry for sounding and acting a bit giddy, but I cannot help it…time to get another fix of JASON CASTRO!

I think Jason accomplished something remarkable. Prior to American Idol he had only performed in public five times. He showed great courage and raw talent to get up there with contestants who had much more experience. If Jason is willing to take a chance like that, I hope the recording industry will take a chance on him. Thanks Rolling Stone for a true glimpse into a wonderful new artist!

A-town-Texas | 5/15/2008, 9:24 am EST

big fan of Jason Castro, my husband was telling me I liked Jason because he’s georgeous, which he is but I really like the way he sings. After downloading his songs and hearing them on my computer my husband now hears what I have been hearing. His voice is unique. This is the 1st AI contestant I’ve searched online for, and now that he’s off the show we’re not really enjoying it. We wish Jason the best, and will definetly keep an eye out for an upcoming cd.

Dreadhead #850 here! I just bought tickets yesterday for the AI concert in Bossier City on August 26th!! I’m really excited for Jason’s future in music and can’t wait to buy his CD. There is no way that I believe Syesha got more votes than he did.

SusanNJ | 5/15/2008, 8:01 am EST

I’ll be waiting (not very patiently I might add) to Jason’s album. His voice is both different and unique. I’ve been watching American Idol since Season 1 and this is the first time I actually want to by someone’s CD. Can’t wait for his record deal!! Jason you are truly a winner!!

Another Jason fan here. I’ve enjoyed tuning in week after week to a show I had never watched before just to see Jason Castro. He has some real God-given talent and I am relieved to hear he plans on possibly doing an album in the future. AI had a real treasure in this kid although they didn’t seem to know it. Can’t wait for more JC.

Sam | 5/15/2008, 4:24 am EST

Whoop! I can’t wait for the cd

sue_nair | 5/15/2008, 3:34 am EST

hi jason, i’m a dreadhead and have been a fan since you performed daydream.I was blown away by your voice and personality. love your style of music which was a breath of fresh air to the show, i’m so proud of you!!! looking forward to your CD!!

anna | 5/15/2008, 3:09 am EST

Jason I am so happy you plan to continue music. I am 50 and my husband is 53. Even though my husband usually prefers the David Cook style of music. He said you have the most amazing voice and way of communicating a song. I cried the day after your final night. Seriously cried at the thought we would not be able to continue to hear your gifted voice. Thank you so much for going forth. Just be yourself, not Ray, not Ben, BE JASON because you are amazing.

Hankie DH 1560 | 5/15/2008, 2:54 am EST

ROLLING STONE THANK YOU!!

Jason Castro’s music moves me, grabs my heart and touches my soul. When I listened to the studio version of Over The Rainbow I broke down and freely cried. I have no explanation, no words to describe what happened.

Jason fills a niche that has been empty for too long. I look forward to his ongoing work and hope he has wise people working with him.

Thanks again Rolling Stone, you know it when you see it don’t you?

Carol/JasonsNurse/lyonscubs2 | 5/15/2008, 2:51 am EST

Dreadhead #1732 here!!!! What a wonderful interview. Finally, the right questions were asked and the answere were fed to our inquiring minds! Jason is truly a breath of fresh air, and his soft and beautiful voice brings us peace. This is the first year that I have voted (like mad!!!), and it may be my last. Jason is truly inspirational and I am looking forward to his 1st record (they still use that term, don’t they?)
God Bless the Castro Family!!!

ChristianRocker | 5/15/2008, 2:22 am EST

Work at a Contemporary Christian radio station and we’ve actually had audience members call in and request Jason’s version’s of “Travelin’ Thru” and “Hallelujah” be played on the air. Unfortunately we were unable to do it which was very frustrating. I was happy to read this article and to learn that he is already looking ahead and thinking about trying to put together an album. It’s also good to hear he’s getting input on the tour performances instead of being forced to sing songs he’s not comfortable with.Always wonderful to discover new talent and in my opinion, Jason is one of the best to come around in years.

jef | 5/15/2008, 2:16 am EST

I’m a huge fan of Chris Daughtry and now a Jason Castro fan too!!! They couldn’t be more different in style, but in substance they are very similiar. Both great role models for today’s jaded world.

Dreadhead #1489 | 5/15/2008, 2:15 am EST

Jason, we are all ready to support you and buy your cd whenever it comes out! We love you :)

So glad you liked all the postcards, I filled them out while my daughter played at the park.

Dianne | 5/15/2008, 2:09 am EST

First: Thank you, Joanne Light!

Well, said… with all that said,
Thank you, R. S. for this marvelous interview. Jason is all that and more… I’m hoping he will, with is music and love for connecting, be able to bring more people together is unique ways…like combining English, Spanish & French in one song…
The young man is so highly gifted and such a magnet… he is capable of endless magic. Keep daydreaming Jason… only great bigger rainbows ahead for you, and we love that you are content with life once again! Bravo!!!
For the record…I’ve heard Jason say that he’ would rather do his own songs, which I will happily buy, still,… I would love to hear any song around that might have the special “Jason” spin. (I do love your phrasing. Both of my sons and me, when we hear a song… we turn to eachother with, “I love to hear Jason’s version of this, his voice would add that richness and depth it needs”! Anxiously for your next project after the tour!

sooner | 5/15/2008, 2:04 am EST

thanks thanks Rolling stone for asking questions about the man and his MUSIC!!! jason has delivered something to American Idol this year that the producers and the judges can not understand and that is pure, raw ,genuine talent sung from the heart and soul. Every week Jason took a song found a way to connect to it and in turn sing it from a place that actually changed and touched peoples lives. artists like Jason Castro are very very rare and that is what I believe attracted so many people from so many places and so many age ranges and backgrounds because he refused each week to PERFORM a song each week jus to please he masses and WIN American Idol. Jason instead refused to compromise and stayed true to himself and chose to tell a story with his song in hopes that it would touch those people it was intended to reach and lift their spirits . he is a rare find indeed and I will stand forever proud to be Dreadhead #7 and will be a fan for life.

lgmama | 5/15/2008, 1:56 am EST

Thank you Rollingstone for asking Jason about his music. We dreadheads appreciate it very much. Jason - You sing with your heart & soul and that’s what matters. You are the real deal! We can’t wait to buy your CD & see you in your own concert. We will be waiting..but BOY make it fast…don’t want to go through Jason’s music withdrawal. Thank you for just being YOU!
**Dreadhead #1184 & Not a teeny boper either

Cassie | 5/15/2008, 1:54 am EST

I am a music fanatic and Rolling Stone is the holy grail! I saw an interview Jason Castro did when he made the Top 24 on American Idol and have been a fan ever since. In it, he talked about music being an “extension of who I am” and said “singing and playing go hand in hand with me”. He also talked about “trying to translate a story and some passion”. He was also stumped when they asked him what he would do with his first big paycheck because he hadn’t even thought about it. I knew when I heard him that he wasn’t in it for the “fame” but rather for the music. All these months later, reading interviews like this, I still believe that’s true (even though the “fame” has now come!). American Idol was not the perfect place for him as a musician. He’s said in other interviews that he just didn’t have time to “really fall in love with the songs” but when recording an album that won’t be the case! His voice sounds amazing in the studio and all of his songs sold very well on ITunes. Personally, I am grateful to the show for allowing so many people to experience his charming personality and touching music. Here’s hoping he gets a great recording contract and we get a lot of Hallelujah moments in the future!

Bev | 5/15/2008, 1:34 am EST

I’m relieved to see an interview that does not talk about how he got his dread or the “don’t vote” thing. Thank you Rolling Stone for giving Jason’s interview a new light.

Brittany | 5/15/2008, 1:34 am EST

Jason Castro deserves to have an amazing career! He’s worked so hard and put so much emotion into everything he does. I cannot wait till he comes out with a CD. I will buy MULTIPLE cd’s to support him. Give them to ALL of my friends as gifts haha. JASON CASTRO WE LOVE YOU CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOU ON TOUR!!!!!
-Brittany, Dreadhead #1076!

Melissa | 5/15/2008, 1:32 am EST

Great article! Dreadhead #2235 speaking here! Jason is passionate, and genuine–he is the REAL DEAL. His voice is beautiful and I haven’t been able to get him out of my head ever since he sang his way in there! I will buy his cd and copies for anybody I know who wants one. FAN FOREVER! Love you Jason!

Nancy | 5/15/2008, 1:31 am EST

Thanks Rolling Stone for actually asking questions that mean something!! All of his rabid fans have been dying to know what Jason thinks about his MUSIC and this article was AWESOME!!

I’m 40, never voted or cared that much about Idol but like others, I voted like a crazed animal for Jason!! I got an iPod just to download all your songs! I paid for tour tickets - something I never would think to do before. Basically, you’ve turned me into a 16 yr old again! But I don’t really care because just listening to your beautiful voice makes “everything all right” in my world. Jason you are beautiful in and out - and I will follow you til the end of my days…

-another proud dreadhead #1870

Stephanie | 5/15/2008, 1:14 am EST

There’s currently an on-line poll about American Idol. With more than 544,000 people responding to the question: Which early reject will achieve Daughtry-like success? Jason Castro comes in at #1 with 32% of the vote!
When asked the Best Performance of Season 7? Jason Castro comes in at #2 for Hallelujah with 28% of the vote.
In another poll asking Who’s CD do you want to purchase after the show is over? Jason is in the Top 3.
Another poll ranks his version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” as one of the Top 25 performances ever on American Idol.
With the proper guidance and support from a good manager, a quality producer and a strong record label Jason Castro is going to be huge!
Jason didn’t need to win American Idol. Like that other 4th place finisher Chris Daughtry, he’s got Grammy’s and American Music awards in his future!!!!!

Anonynous | 5/15/2008, 1:13 am EST

Jason Castro has been a breath of fresh air to the AI stage which had become predictable and stale. AI has moved from discovering the untapped talent of ordinary folks to a talent agency. This year somehow they unexpectantly placed Jason in this mix and for that I am eternally grateful. He is a pure and genuine soul that you can’t help but connect with. I Will BE FIRST in line to buy his CD!Can’t wait!

Faithful Dreadhead | 5/15/2008, 12:59 am EST

Jason has a voice that draws you in and has a special way of making you really feel the message of the song. This Dreadhead can hardly wait to hear more!

Faye | 5/15/2008, 12:51 am EST

So glad to hear that Jason intends to pursue a career in music and I hope he gets just the perfect producer / mentor for his style and sensibilities….someone who is truly interested in helping an artist develop.
I hope he is as successful as he wants to be.
I very much look forward to what the music he makes in the future.

Layla | 5/15/2008, 12:49 am EST

ANOTHER HUGE FAN OF JASONS HERE! Iecho all the sentiments already written above, and more! This kid definately has the ‘IT’ factor. Beautiful, soothing voice, and he is so good looking. His warm personality is just more icing on the cake. Mark my words, this kid is going to be on top with the greats like Dylan, Elvis, etc… He touches soooo many age groups as well as both male and female fans. I feel silly…like a teeny bopper again, AND LOVING IT! If I could only be 20 years younger! LOL

If you ever find time to read these posts…ALWAYS STAY JUST THE WAY YOU ARE! DON’T BECOME CYNICAL WITH LIFE AS YOU GROW OLDER…YOU ARE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR, JUST THE WAY YOU ARE! Luv ya kid! I’ve already bought all of your tunes on iTunes…BUT I NEED MORE! MAKE THAT ALBUM!! SOMEONE SIGN HIM UP NOW!! He’s the ONLY reason I watched American Idol this year!

God Bless you Jason! :-)

Anon | 5/15/2008, 12:46 am EST

Jason is a unique talented young man with a very distinctive voice. I hope someone snags him up because I definitely want to hear more from him.

s.h.a. | 5/15/2008, 12:36 am EST

Thanks to Jason for touching so many hearts with his incredibly beautiful music. I hope he can connect pen to paper and come up with some great material for his first release. We all are looking forward to hearing more from him.

Ape | 5/15/2008, 12:33 am EST

Awesome article. Glad a credible magazine didn’t waste time on questions like “how long did it take to grow your dreadlocks”, but stuck to the music.
I know many people waiting to buy this guy’s first CD. Hopefully he goes with the right record label, whether major or indie. Getting signed doesn’t mean success.

overstrung | 5/15/2008, 12:31 am EST

Jason Castro’s music has made a huge impact on so many who have never seen American Idol. His renditions of Hallelujah and Over the Rainbow resurrected the artistry of Jeff Buckley and Bruddah Iz. Producers would be crazy not to pick him up very soon. His original music is infectious. Dreadhead fans anxiously await his cd. Hurry!

RadioChick | 5/15/2008, 12:29 am EST

I’m a DJ at a radio station in New York City. Every year, I “dread” (ha, ha!) watching American Idol but it’s basically a job requirement because we dish about it on the air. This is the first season I’ve actually enjoyed watching and it was because of Jason Castro! His wonderful voice and kind-hearted spirit touched my soul. I can tell you my station has alot of listeners who feel the same way. People called in and told us that his music was literally “changing their lives”. I’d love to hear some of his original material and can’t wait to eventually play him on our radio station.

Travelinthru | 5/15/2008, 12:26 am EST

I think Jason Castro has one of the most unique, beautiful voices I have ever heard. For those who have not downloaded his studio recordings off of iTunes, please give them a listen. They’re amazing. I could listen to him all day. He’s such an artist. And an amazing song writer, also. I’ll be a fan forever. DH 1850

Leigh | 5/15/2008, 12:18 am EST

Leave it to a music magazine to finally write a story about Jason and his music!!! YOU ROCK ROLLING STONE!!!!!
I’ve been waiting for verbal confirmation that he does indeed plan to start writing and working on gathering material for an album. So glad Rolling Stone put it on the record!
I’ve downloaded every one of his songs off ITunes. His STUDIO VERSIONS are amazing (They can also be found on You Tube…search Jason Castro Studio and they come up!).
Jason really knows who he is as a musician. He totally fits in with the Ben Harper/Jack Johnson-type “vibe”. He’s just a beautiful, beautiful man inside and out.

allicat | 5/15/2008, 12:15 am EST

I’m really looking forward to Jason’s first CD. It’s clear that he loves making music and really wants to connect with his songs so that we hear only his best. Can’t wait to see what doors will open for him.

ella | 5/15/2008, 12:12 am EST

Gladys | 5/15/2008, 12:07 am EST

THANK YOU!!! Finally — a media entry that discusses Jason Castro’s MUSIC and does not waste time talking about his hair and other nonsense issues. Castro is a talented singer-songwriter and richly deserves a recording contract — I will be waiting in line to get his first CD.

Sunny | 5/14/2008, 11:41 pm EST

I Love Jason Castro’s music…it’s not surprising that he turned me into a voting mad woman, and I’ve never voted or really watched much of AI before. He’ll fit nicely into my playlists which already include Marley (Bob & Ziggy), Jeff Buckley, Jack Johnson, Ben Harper etc. He IS my kind of singer/songwriter, raw, and pure emotion which float across his liquid voice.

Kathy M | 5/14/2008, 11:38 pm EST

Someone please hurry up and sign Jason because he is amazing and the only reason I watched Idol this year. He hooked me from his first performance on the show then made me love him after listening to his original music . He has a deep connection with his original music and he is a true artist.

Dreadhead! | 5/14/2008, 11:31 pm EST

I cannot wait for an album to come out from this talented young man! His voice is so original and universal, it appeals to people all over the world. Please someone offer him a deal now!!

Sarah | 5/14/2008, 11:26 pm EST

I read Rolling Stone’s recent Cover Story on Jack Johnson (”The Dude Abides”) and had to laugh because so much of it also sounded like a description of Jason Castro: mellow, close to nature, humble, initially extremely shy about singing outside his family, his mom told him he had a good voice, started writing songs to impress his girlfriend, doesn’t force anything, etc. The comparison is almost uncanny!!!!!!!
Like millions of other Jason fans I am eagerly anticipating seeing him on tour this summer. I also hope music producers or a record label will recognize this guy’s raw talent and appeal and snatch him up ASAP! With his looks, voice and personality he has the “IT” factor written all over him.

Kathy | 5/14/2008, 11:21 pm EST

Somebody please sign this guy because I can’t wait to hear more of his original material.AI made me notice him but it was the deep emotion in his original songs that made me love him . I think he will truly be a great artist and around for a long time !!!

Melissa | 5/14/2008, 11:20 pm EST

Jason,
First, I want to be upfront with you and tell you that I’m 47 years old and could be your mother or grandmother!! But your voice is universal and crosses over many generations. I find beauty and peace surround me when I listen to your songs. Please release an album ASAP!
