Metallica Launch “Mission: Metallica”

5/12/08, 10:10 am EST

Nearly a decade after lashing out at Napster because their music was getting out there too early, Metallica will put material from their forthcoming album online on their own terms today with the launch of “Mission: Metallica.” The site currently features a trailer for what’s to come and the option to sign up for e-mail alerts, but the band promises that users will be able to watch footage of the band in the studio, hear riffs as they are written and enter to win backstage passes for concerts this summer. The band is also advertising something called “Mission: Metallica Platinum,” which will provide downloads of live shows and delivery of the physical album the day it comes out, though there is no indication of how much this service will cost. The band promises even more content concepts will premiere on the site in the coming weeks, all of which will lead up to the release of Metallica’s still-untitled new studio album, expected in September.

With the evaporation of cd sales and record stores, groups are getting creative and becoming more like boutique stores that care about there loyal customers their brand and their products. I like this trend.

Ya mutha’.

Evan | 5/12/2008, 2:33 pm EST

Metallica are greedy sacks of shit and they haven’t made a good album in 20 years.

The Mule | 5/12/2008, 4:44 pm EST

Yep, they haven’t released a good one since Master of Puppets. They lost that little bit of uniqueness once Cliff Burton died.

Headcheck | 5/12/2008, 5:07 pm EST

I agree with Evan’s opinion. Metallica hasn’t been a metal band or make good music since …And Justice For All.

J | 5/12/2008, 5:50 pm EST

Any and all metallica bashing is completely unfounded, especially with the “they haven’t made a good album in 20 years” BS… listen to the song “Outlaw Torn” from Load really loud, and then just shut your mouth and give them a little respect, geez.

Drew | 5/12/2008, 5:57 pm EST

Great….more footage of them in studio….anyone who saw “Some Kind of Monster” will know that it should have been called “Whinny Bitches making noise.”

Jeremy | 5/12/2008, 7:36 pm EST

I think it’s funny that Evan would call Metallica “greedy sacks of shit” when they are offering free music on Mission Metallica. Furthermore, listen to the samples on the website and you will see that the new album is better than the Black Album . . . an album which is not only the 5th best selling in history but made less than 20 years ago. And Drew, Mission Metallica shows Metallica just having fun with the new cd, it’s no remake of Some Kind Of Monster.

oldhippyrog | 5/13/2008, 12:16 am EST

Kman, I agree. Well stated.

hitmaker | 5/13/2008, 4:58 am EST

Lars will love this..you sound like Motley Crue now!!!!

The Black Album isn’t the 5th best selling in history. That statement is laughable. I would probably doubt it to be in the top 100.

I’m not a big Metallica fan, but I flew to Moscow this summer and while I was there I went to their concert at the Olympic Stadium…It was unbelievable. Anyone who says they can’t play as fast or as hard as they used to is sadly mistaken. James sounded great and the full version of ‘Orion’ was slammin. I think this next album will silence alot of the Metallica critics

FuckMetallicaHaters | 5/13/2008, 7:38 pm EST

Fuck all of y’all who dis Metallica. Go and listen to your poppy bullshit music that is on MTV and Vh1. FUCK YOU!! especially “Evan”, “kman”, “the Mule” and all Metallica haters. FUCK’EM!!! PUNKS!!!!

Cimeries | 5/13/2008, 10:33 pm EST

Metallica hasn’t made a good album since Dave Mustaine wrote The Mechanics… Yea right, It looks to me like the New Metallica album is going to be pretty damn good. Also Metallica live always rocks, and it always will.

FREAKO | 5/14/2008, 4:43 am EST

Hopefully Lars will take his drumset out of the metal trashcan for this album. It sounded pretty bad on St. Anger and I can’t believe Bob Rock actually approved of that horrible set of drum tracks.

Orion | 5/14/2008, 1:38 pm EST

Long time Metallica fan since ‘84 – Metallica’s Black album is tied for the 10th best selling album of all-time selling $14 million copies you pussys! Nonetheless, their new album will kick-ass with Rubin in charge and thank god Bob Rock and Newstead is now out of the picture! I always thought Newstead sucked and wish they found Trujillo a long time ago. Not to mention they’re in a much better frame of mind than they were a few years ago. Here’s a news flash – St. Anger was not a studio album and wasn’t intended to be over produced to sell to the masses – that’s why it was weak although Frantic, St. Anger, and Some Kind of Monster are instant classics. I understand that you “old-school” Metallica fans don’t like anything past the Black album but true fans will support them no matter what they put out. The fact is that Cliff was a major influence in that band and they’ve never been the same since he died – get used to it! If you want to hear another Kill ‘em All or Master of Puppets then go to a live show and listen to them crank-out those tunes better than they ever have but don’t hold your breath for them to make another one of those albums. Who wants to hear re-tread music that sounds the same? Bring the new shit and LONG LIVE THE KINGS!

metal man | 5/14/2008, 2:18 pm EST

Metallica! Metallica! Metallica!

Elvis knows best... | 5/15/2008, 7:58 am EST

If you don’t like their methods, don’t buy. You haters probably steal your musinc anyway…

nachobizness | 5/17/2008, 11:03 pm EST

hey Orion, shut the fuck up you puss! you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. Metallica willingly sacrificed fans to fit in with the times & styles. anybody with any sense knows the first four albums are the best. it doesn’t take a music nerd or an Einstein to know that. when they can make an album has the energy & creativity as Puppets or Lightening then I’ll be convinced.

Dan | 5/19/2008, 12:40 am EST

Hell yeah!!!Metallicas new album is going to be insane!!! I can’t wait, Metallica is the greatest metal band, period

Texas Tom | 5/19/2008, 3:30 pm EST

Metallica hasnt put out a great album since Justice… and that had zero bass lines. Rick Ruben could be the key to the ‘tallica boys getting their balls out of their purses; he has done so much for bands throughout the years and hopfully he does the same for these fux. I want to believe that they will put out a great album but i’ve been disappointed with them since the early 90’s so ill just cross my fingers and hope and pray that they put the metal back in metallica.

JIM | 5/20/2008, 5:10 am EST

AMEN ORION!!!!!!

Gardah Man | 5/20/2008, 9:27 pm EST

Orion, Trujillo is a really good bassist.. but u cant write Newstead off like that! He was an amazing bass player and one hell of a live performer… I miss his backing vocals haha..

Peace.

lead head 85 | 5/23/2008, 10:00 pm EST

you all are nuts ya like what you like

metalgrimes | 5/24/2008, 9:56 pm EST

Metallica is great and I like everything….especially the newer stuff because James sounds so much better. In the early stuff he sounds like he was in a coke can.

metalgrimes | 5/24/2008, 9:59 pm EST

I also think that the stuff they made since the black album is some of the best stuff yet…don’t get stuff in the old days.

blackened | 5/26/2008, 5:01 am EST

They`re back!!!!!

darkthrone | 6/11/2008, 7:50 am EST

Leave the guys to it – they’re old, they’ve got more money than most african nations and are one of the defining bands of the last 25 years – I’ve been to a lot of gigs and metallica at download 2006 was the most amazing thing ive heard or seen in my life – you try and get motivated when you’ve got $120m and kids

? | 4/17/2009, 12:26 pm EST

metallica blows. money money and money. put trhem against a real band and there garbage. the stones? no comparison in revenue… skill or influence. give them enough money and theyll cove miley cyrus
