Jason Castro Overthrown on “American Idol”

5/8/08, 11:18 am EST

There will be no more easy-going, dreadlocked vibes on American Idol this season, as Jason Castro was shown the door on last night’s show. He was the most jubilant Idol reject in history, smiling like a goofball and shrugging as if to say, “I’ve been phoning it in for weeks and deeply miss my gravity bong.” He also had a tremendous exit line: When asked how he felt about being eliminated, Castro quipped, “Three songs next week — I don’t know what I would have done.”

Castro’s stonery weirdness seemed to permeate the entire elimination episode. The Ford commercial had everybody dressing up as matadors, the phone-in segment featured a lunatic suggesting Simon become the next James Bond and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine admitted he never knows what city he’s in just before telling the Idols they were going to get jaded pretty soon. The show closed with Castro’s exit montage (featuring the “I didn’t know this song from Cats was sung by a cat” line, the finest moment in television this year) followed by a reprise of a twitchy reprise of “I Shot the Sheriff.” With one show before the finale, it seems like it will be a battle between the two Davids. Will America side with syrupy moppet Archuleta or agrro-loverboy Cook? Or will Syesha Mercado pull off the upset?

I am going on the American Ido Tour ONLY because of Jason Castro! I am a huge fan! If anyone knows how to get backstage passes in MN- I am there!

Hey ella,
I resemble that comment. What the?

Kim | 5/10/2008, 2:19 pm EST

Gawwwwd, I hate biased journalism! Jason is not a stoner, Jason has not be “phoning it in for weeks”. He has to CONNECT with songs in order to sing them. He has said that when he’s been able to do that, he’s had great weeks. Jason is an artist, not just a singer. THAT is why American Idol didn’t get him. Would either of the “Bob’s” have made it through week 1 of auditions of American Idol???? I think Jason has a beautiful spirit and will be around for a very very long time for us who appreciate REAL TOUCHING music to enjoy.

Good luck with your ONE album David “Idolbot” Archuletta.

jason castro fans are the craziest, most delusional bunch of loons EVER. i encourage sane people who enjoy laughing to check out the myidol boards or daydreamingboy.com to read batshittery at its finest.

Jason took it seriously. Its the show that needs changing. Why would you expect contestants to sings song by Mariah Carrey? Andrew Lloyd Weeber? Jason said that many of his choices weren’t approved. This is one reason why it was so hard for him. Not only that they are overworked and with time being a premium, learning new songs each week is tough.

I will be buying a Jason Castro CD the first day its available. His voice is amazing and his appeal is very broad as far as demographics.

chloe | 5/10/2008, 12:26 am EST

Jason was the best thing on American Idol this year. If you would bother to read his interviews, you would see an intelligent and insightful guy, not the idiot stoner that you portray. With regard to the three songs comment, he was candid about his lack of experience, and added that it takes him time to “fall in love with a song” and feel comfortable with it.
I will buy Jason’s CD. He is the real deal.

Jason has touched so many with his laid back yet upbeat music for the soul! I think he said it best in his own words “It takes time to fall in love with a song” A talent like Jason should not be rushed …Jason I look forward to purchasing your first CD … Thank you for sharing yourself with us!!!

Lisa | 5/9/2008, 10:43 pm EST

Jason, you are incredibly talented and I just love your voice! You were the star of the show! Can’t wait to see you on the tour and to buy your CD! Love ya JC!

gailer | 5/9/2008, 10:42 pm EST

Jason, I cannot wait for your original music! I was always impressed by your great attitude about life!
Thank you for 3 great mos-what a fun ride it was!

Loved Jason!! He will be greatly missed. Those who say he wasn’t talented, just don’t get him. I thought he did a great job with “Mr. Tambourine Man” minus one little jingle jangle! He was too cool for that rigged show. GO Jason, hurry and make your record! I want it!

chexout | 5/9/2008, 1:16 pm EST

i thought Jason was great! and he is proabably the ONLY one I would buy his CD after this stoopid rigged show.

I love Jason Castro’s voice and everything about him~ he’s true to himself and honest. The songs he sang on American Idol are the only ones I find myself singing all day long. The best contestant ever!

schula | 5/9/2008, 1:11 am EST

joe, i’m a big dylan fan and i believe castro gets what it takes and he’ll go far.

maria.alonzo | 5/8/2008, 10:52 pm EST

Jason might have not looked so serious enough for the competition, though, he was a good singer. Hands down on David Cook, He has to win. Screw Archutela

frumundacheez | 5/8/2008, 10:47 pm EST

Oh, man. Don’t hate on David A. He’s cute. And it seems like even his dad isn’t as bad as we were led to believe
Ch eck the comments. “I want David Archuleta to pop out of my fortune cookie.” I can’t say why, but that seems really dirty!

Sanchez | 5/8/2008, 9:45 pm EST

Once again RS, you’re on top of this horseshit ’cause nobody else is…Good job.

Go find a used record store and look at the past issues on the wall when you used ot be a music mag…Not a Karoeke report.

Cheers.

joe | 5/8/2008, 9:06 pm EST

so glad Castro is gone, he should be shot on behalf of Dylan fans everywhere

crabpaws | 5/8/2008, 6:18 pm EST

Jason added comic relief and occasional pleasurable song interpretations to a show that takes itself way too seriously.

Coming up — is David Cook smart enough to take a dive in the next two weeks? And if so, how will he do it?

American Idol and David Archuleta deserve each other.

Tim | 5/8/2008, 1:18 pm EST

good riddance stoner dude

Matt | 5/8/2008, 12:18 pm EST

David Archuletta has the worst stage presence of all time. If he does the backstreet boy inspired “palm-up” horizontal hand slide move again, I think I might puke.
