Gadget Envy: AirDrives Earphones

5/8/08, 4:34 pm EST

What It Is: Earphones that deliver the power and intimacy of those iPod earbuds without damaging your ears.

Who It’s For: Anybody who wants to enjoy music at maximum volume without going deaf.

Why It’s Worthy: AirDrives use something called InAir technology, a patented system that places the speaker on the outside of the ear, which allows for dynamic sound quality while keeping the pressure on the inner ear low. Also, there’s a variation available for the iPhone that seamless transitions into phone calls — a boon for iPhone addicts.

Our Only Complaint: Depending on what your tastes are, you may not like the fact that AirDrives allow for a lot more outside sound to infiltrate (though it will probably keep you from being hit by a bus).

Cost/Where to Get It: $79.99; AirDrives (Available now)

Love them. I walk through town, lightly hear the noises around me to keep safe but the stereo sound clarity is well worth the money.

Great idea…good thing to know that this industry is looking out for the future of our hearing. The ‘being hit by a bus’ bit was good, too. Only problem: too much money.
