Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more.
Neil Diamond, “Pretty Amazing Grace” [Official]
Rick Rubin and Neil Diamond return, with a record that sounds very polite. We like this, and we appreciate the effort, but we kinda wish “serious” didn’t always mean misplacing the ostentatiousness.
Elvis Costello, “Stella Hurts” [Stereo Jealousy]
Elvis Costello’s latest, Momofuku, has been out on vinyl for weeks, but today is the first day you can purchase it in any digital format. Don’t try to sample any MP3s online besides this one, though, because that endeavor will just turn into an endless hellish circle of dead links, outdated MySpace pages and mounting exasperation. Trust us.
No Age, “Sleeper Hold” [MySpace]
We’ve got your big, loud, sloppy rock & roll right here. Barely practiced, clattering and cantankerous, No Age restore a bit of recklessness to a rock scene whose premeditation has become crazy-making.
Nine Inch Nails, The Slip [Full Album]
Maybe you’ve heard something about this: Trent Reznor is giving away the new Nine Inch Nails album, on his site, for free. Or, at least, free until Trent shows up in your bedroom late one night, illuminated only by a flash of lightning, holding a briefcase and ominously sneering, “Ahhh, yesss, but perhapss there is something you can do for meeee…”
Young Jeezy feat. Kanye West, “Put On” [Advance Track]
You know what we’d like more than anything else? For someone to rig up a Delorean, go back in time, and destroy the vocoder. Guys, please, listen: the vocoder? It doesn’t sound cool. Analogy: 20 years ago they made a He-Man playset and it came with a microphone that was supposed to make you sound like Skeletor. You know what it made you sound like? A friendless dork. Vocoder? Same thing. Let it go.
