Radiohead Deal in Contradictions, Arena Bombast at Kickoff Show in Florida

West Palm Beach, Florida — with its disposable income, constant sunshine and skin-stretching breast implants — is either the most ridiculous place for Radiohead to kick off their latest tour of the U.S., or just the most ridiculously appropriate.

Radiohead clearly reveled in their surroundings, as Thom Yorke strolled onstage wearing a Don Johnson-styled white blazer while wryly crooning “All I Need” like a Miami lounge lizard to open last night’s show, the first on the band’s U.S. tour for In Rainbows. The impersonation only made the music seem more menacing; not just a simmering come-on, but a song about obsession and grotesquerie. Those sleights of hand are what Radiohead shows are all about: The jacket came off promptly, video screens crackled monstrously to life, and Radiohead ripped into a snarling take on “Bodysnatchers.” Just as Yorke had stripped himself back down to a non-descript rocker, his band had suddenly mutated into a hulking arena monster.

Radiohead must have made some serious cash with In Rainbows, and by the looks of it they’ve spent a good part of that money on an incredible new live set-up. To deafening applause, the quintet took the stage enclosed in a massive cave of long, drape-like lighting fixtures, which hung down vertically from the stage’s ceiling programmed for a variety of dazzling effects. Behind them, an ultra-wide movie screen blared thermal video of each member from multiple angles. Both the amplifiers and Yorke’s piano were emblazoned with Tibetan flags.

The band’s show was a beautifully played set heavy on new material, a study in carefully maintained sonic contrasts. Where “Reckoner,” “Nude” and “House of Cards” proffered dreamy spaciousness, cuts like “Bangers and Mash” and “Idioteque” worked within tightly constricted rhythmic patterns. “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi” did a bit of both, with Phil Selway’s break-beat drums jostling hotly beneath a silky guitar figure and Yorke’s bottom-of-the-well falsetto. While Jonny Greenwood spend a good amount of time thrashing out shoe-gazing guitar squall as though he was cutting down a tree, with “Faust Arp”, the audience got a rare acoustic guitar duet. During the second encore, the skilled multiinstrumentalist casually plunked out synth chords with the headstock of his guitar while also picking an arpeggio.

“We just spent three days in Miami beach,” Yorke told the crowd in disbelief towards the end of the show, taking a break from his grade-schooler-on-Tang hopping routine. He shook his head, widened his eyes and spun his index finger around his temple. “Saw some very strange reconstructions. It made me proud to be pale white and British.” Yorke stared out at the palm trees lining the perimeter of the amphitheatre’s shell and laughed. The crowd went crazy.

After two encores, the band closed with a ringing “Street Spirit (Fade Out).” “Immerse yourself,” Yorke sang, “in love.” Of all this band’s contradictions, the best is that they play music dealing with isolation for massive crowds of people. Only in its live performances does the curtain come fully off that irony, and when it does, it’s usually to reveal that most of those songs are simply about connection.

Seeing them in ATL in 2 days!!! The set list looks awesome. 2 encores, now that is what I want to see. Looks like most songs from In Rainbows, 3 or 4 each from Bends, Kid A, and Hail to the Thief. Only one from OK Computer (Airbag)… It’ll be cool to see the songs changed up from night-to-night. Obviously In Rainbows will be dominant, but the other gems they choose will be very exciting too.

As a born and raised Floridian, I must say it was a pleasure to see Radiohead on my turf. Radiohead played their hearts out. The stage will blow your mind.

I think that’s the best radiohead descriptive I have ever heard.

Saw them last night. One of the best Radiohead shows I’ve ever seen. They are purely brilliant.

Jo | 5/6/2008, 1:51 pm EST

mindblowing stuff. they are the best live act in history. no other band compares.

Nick | 5/6/2008, 1:51 pm EST

Absolutely amazing show. If ur not a radiohead fan then u will be after witnessing their energetic and finely tuned live performance. Thom at times sang like an angel and the scene in west palm was practiaclly heaven.

Went to the show last night (the opposite of low) and it was amazing. The article is dead-on about WPB! But it was fantastic to see them live in my backyard. VIVA RADIOHEAD!

Great review, I’m very jealous, I’ll be one head among the 60,000 or so seeing them at Lollapalooza in August. 3 months is a long wait…

radiohead | 5/6/2008, 2:25 pm EST

did anyone else notice when they messed up weird fishes? they did the whole outro twice!

Thom apologized “We obviously havent practiced this song enough”.

It was a good show, had its ups and downs. volume was a little low towards the back but there were some amazing parts as well.

I cant help but think it could have been better though. Im sure they;ll perfect it the more they play.

OH YEAH!!! | 5/6/2008, 2:34 pm EST

can’t wait for charlotte man!!!

and seriously, the “ups and downs” are what make radiohead amazing and interesting….

can’t believe it’s so soon!!!
ahhhh

just wanted to correct the first person who commented…

The band actually played TWO songs from OK Computer… Airbag… and Exit Music (For A Film).

But yes, I concur. It was a beautiful show. I could understand if some casual fans were disappointed by the lack of the usual ’staples’, like Paranoid Android, Karma Police, Lucky, No Surprises, Fake Plastic Trees, or even Creep.

But I was glad the band concentrated on In Rainbows, and played a lot Kid A… And even the selections from my least favorite album, HTTT, sounded fresh again, after not listening to it for a few years.

(I was surprised by the lack of anything from Amnesiac, which i feel is very underrated. But supposedly every setlist is going to be quite different.)

Optimistic, and Bulletproof were nice surprises!

I’m sad that West Palm was the only show I can make it to this tour. To everyone else seeing this tour, have a great time! You’re in for a treat!

I was transported to another world. That’s all I can say.

subterranean | 5/6/2008, 3:36 pm EST

Just curious, does anyone know if they ever play Subterranean Homesick Alien? It’s one of my favorite radiohead songs. Hopefully they will play Jigsaw when I see them too…

Skippy | 5/6/2008, 3:51 pm EST

Yeah man I was at this show and I was stoned off my ass which made the show even better. Any of you at the show, if you smelled some pungent weed wafting thru the air, that was me! Excellent show and I didn’t even notice the mistake on Wierd Fishes because I was so high. Excellent stage set-up, and great set list although I wished they could’ve played more off of Kid A. But excellent nevertheless!

dennis | 5/6/2008, 3:54 pm EST

i thought it was great visually but would have loved to have heard more “ok computer/bends” tunes. setlist was very heavy on “in rainbows” (which was expected) but great show and finally happy i got to see them!

Banger | 5/6/2008, 4:21 pm EST

I can’t wait till they come to my area. I have a big bag of weed sitting around waiting to be smoked just for their concert!

Pooky | 5/6/2008, 5:34 pm EST

When Thom Yorke was singing “All I Need” and “Nude” I think he had those Palm Beach babes with the “skin-stretching breast implants” in mind.

KAC | 5/6/2008, 5:59 pm EST

Simply put this was perhaps the best sounding live show I have ever had the pleasure of attending… and I’ve been to hundreds. It may have had something to do with location as we were second row dead center. Nevertheless we were just transported by Thom Yorke’s awe-inspiring performance back by John Greenwood’s transcending and incendiary modal guitar licks that so eloquently float through the heart of their music.

The 24 song set list, including both encores, that was understandably heavy with In Rainbow tunes was architected extremely well to take you on a sonic journey of all things Radiohead – from “Bodysnachers” to ‘Nude”. I can’t imagine anyone leaving this performance not inspired by their sheer ability to connect to the human condition. The “dealing in contradictions” analogy is spot on.

The innovative use of all LED lighting fixtures on the stage and no front of house spotlights is a brilliant reminder that this greenwise band practice what they preach. Bravo to the production designers!

Breathtaking show last nice. A very ethereal quality to the whole evening. I have seen dozens of shows at that ampitheather since it opened in 96 and that was easily the best sounding. The visual aspect of the show was over the top yet soothing at the same time. The band was feeling it and the crowd responded and was very respectful of the quieter times. They have an amazing ability to control the crowds energy in a live setting. Simply stunning. I wish I could be in Tampa tonight. Please do not wait years to come back again!!

tara | 5/6/2008, 10:12 pm EST

i will c them next wednesday. how incredibly fantastic. I think that things are complete now and I can die a happy chicky

Drew | 5/6/2008, 11:11 pm EST

I hate to say it but I was greatly disappointed with their performance. The last time I saw them was at the same venue for the Hail to the Thief Tour. That was probably the best concert that I have ever seen. They rocked so hard that one of their amplifiers caught fire on stage.I appreciate Yorke’s melancholy and discontent with the world’s materialistic and meaningless existence, but I would much rather see that turned into energy on stage than put to sleep with the last nights set. The crowd seemed dead and overall unexcited with the performance and they looked like they couldn’t wait till it was over. I love you Radiohead, but last night’s concert sucked!

wow | 5/7/2008, 6:29 pm EST

Drew, ur a wanker!!!!

JP | 5/9/2008, 3:47 am EST

Great read. I got into Charlotte earlier today…Radiohead should be going on in about 17 hours. Then it’s back home to VA for the Bristow show on Sunday.
See them as many times as you can…

Peace

bob rafael | 5/9/2008, 9:40 am EST

i agree with drew that the crowd seemed unexcited. i felt like getting up there and shouting:
“hey you mf-ers, this mf-in radiohead!”
so in essence they had nothing to feed off of.
i have been to my fair share of great shows, but to hear them live for the first time, transforming all those great songs you hear on the albums into what they did out there was amazing! and props to the set designer!
two blunts up!

snts6678 | 5/17/2008, 3:16 pm EST

I’ve seen Radiohead in concert several times, and each time is an amazing experience. Tool is the only other act that can come close to them (and maybe My Morning Jacket). However, each time I’ve seen them I’ve been stone sober and devoid of any other chemical enhancements. Those of you that talk about not being able to wait to get stoned for the show, and “saving a bag of weed” for the next time they come around your area, I feel sorry. You really are complete losers.
