Video: Stone Temple Pilots Rock “Kimmel”

5/2/08, 11:40 am EST

Stone Temple Pilots made their triumphant return last night by playing Jimmy Kimmel Live!’s Pontiac Garage. A non-imprisoned Scott Weiland and his STP mates played two songs, Purple’s “Vasoline” (above) and Tiny Music…’s “Trippin’ On a Hole in a Paper Heart” (after the jump). The band are set to kick off their massive reunion tour May 17th at Columbus, Ohio’s Rock on the Range festival, but not before Weiland serves those eight days in jail. Rolling Stone talked to Weiland for his most comprehensive post-Velvet Revolver interview, which you can read here.

p.s. Look in the mirror before you dog out someone you don’t - nor ever will - know.

Cathy | 5/7/2008, 8:47 pm EST

BTW, this wasn’t an acoustic performance. Did you hear “Interstate Love Song”? It was much more suitable for the setting, and it was sung beautifully.

Cathy C | 5/7/2008, 8:36 pm EST

Has ANYone ever watched the bands on Saturday Night Live? Does ANYone understand how hard it is to perform in such a poor sound environment? Scott could not sing the way he does on stage because his voice needs the power of singing LOUDLY and to hit so many pitches that he had to down play the level he sings at. Did you notice he sang 3 levels deeper to adapt to the small stage/audience/sound system? Has ANYONE EVER SEEN STP LIVE??? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? SCOTT IS THE BEST SHOWMAN ON STAGE, POSSIBLY ONLY COMPARED TO PERRY FARRELL AND DAVID BOWIE (IN THE 70′S). And BTW, I’ve seen both several times and Perry came close in one performance, but Scott - and the rest of the band - ROCK. Get over yourselves.

fred | 5/7/2008, 1:56 am EST

R U the sound man?

Big Mike | 5/6/2008, 9:30 pm EST

Gee… let’s go on and on and on about the sound problem on Kimmel’s show. I think that ground is covered.

ed | 5/6/2008, 7:49 pm EST

It was Weiland’s voice vs. mic’d drums and 2 juiced up guitars !!! give scott a brake! Kimmel should apologize to STP cuz the ’sound-guy’ obviously never heard of mic pre’s …

Ray | 5/5/2008, 9:56 pm EST

Some poster knocked Scott Weiland for not being Perry Farrell…duhhh! NO KIDDING! that’s like knocking Greenday for not being The Cult.Just unfair.

Person | 5/5/2008, 4:53 pm EST

Coming from someone who neither loves nor hates STP, I agree with others who said that there were probably some sound problems happening on stage, maybe the vocal monitors were too low to hear himself well… BUT, reverb and a few vocal effects arent gonna help that flat strained tinny voice. It sounded pretty terrible, i was rather surprised at how bad Scott sounded actually.

Of course its good to have some help vocally no matter who it is, but if you cant sound good straight into the board then thats gonna be a huge problem to correct.

Always loved STP, Radiohead, Soundgarden, Nirvana, etc. Reminds me of the fun times back in the 90’s. Love every song from all the albums…hope their new stuff is just as good. Can’t wait to see them again!

Calvin | 5/5/2008, 9:17 am EST

How are you going to say grunge music vocalist don’t have to hit notes… Soundgarden is the greatest grunge band and if Chris Cornell didn’t hit his notes it would be completely different

Kwam | 5/4/2008, 10:27 pm EST

STP was an OK band at best. I’m not saying they did’nt rock,I know they did.I will say it was ALOT easier to come across as a kickass band in the 90’s than it would have in the 80’s.Also, as much as I’ve always dug Weiland,he has always reminded me of a generic version of Perry Farrell. And him he aint.

mcache | 5/4/2008, 9:35 pm EST

This bullshit makes me long for the Candlebox reunion tour. Did Dean and Eric actually EAT their royalties? It sure as fuck looks like it.

kelley | 5/4/2008, 6:51 pm EST

STP ROCKS ALWAYS HAS ALWAYS WILL! BEST PERFORMERS EVER…BE A BELIEVER SCOTT WILL KEEP IT TOGETHER AS THIS IS HIS LAST CHANCE WITH THE BEST BAND HE COULD EVER HOPE FOR…I’M RAGING FOR HIM AND WILL BE TRAVELING THE COUNTRY TO SEE HIM!

nittmo | 5/4/2008, 6:48 pm EST

Looks like a lot of you don’t understand what entertainment is; I think STP is amazing, one of the best rock bands ever, and I cannot WAIT until they come to South Fla in August……Just curious - of all of the people that wrote negative comments, what bands are YOU in? How many Grammys have YOU been nominated for? How many albums have YOU sold? What kind of successes have YOU had in your life, such that you feel you have the right to say negative things (anonymously) in a public forum? Or is it just constructive criticism you are proffering?

Finally - when are YOU going to be performing on The Jimmy Kimmel Show?

Scott | 5/4/2008, 2:35 am EST

A lot of you guys are just ungrateful or non STP fans.

duke | 5/3/2008, 10:06 pm EST

It’s official - STP is washed up.

Bukowski | 5/3/2008, 9:19 pm EST

Actually Scott’s vocals were fine. The Kimmel show’s sound guys fucked him. How about a vocal effect or two and some reverb on his vocals and some EQ to boot?

You think the sound geniuses behind Jimmy Kimmel’s amazing “Concert Series” would know how to mix vocals by now.

Don’t worry kids, Weiland will sound a lot better when STP have their own sound guys and they play arenas where everythng has to be BIG!

Blair | 5/3/2008, 4:07 pm EST

I enjoyed the two songs played and the band sounded great. The vocals were a little weak at times but it’s a great starting point for the STP.They have got some great material and obviously the fans are stoked.Best of health on the tour.

tim | 5/3/2008, 4:03 pm EST

wow.. i have never thought scott was a very good singer, but this just verifies it!!! the band musically, always kicks ass, but wow scott just flat out sucks live!!! like he is tone deaf…

Blair | 5/3/2008, 3:53 pm EST

I think the perforance was adequate, the vocals were a little weak at times but the band sounded great. It’s a starting point and something to build on.They have some great material and obviously the fans are pumped. The tour is a great opportunity for STP.Best of health guys.

bob pridden | 5/3/2008, 12:50 pm EST

slightly painful to watch. scott was not ready for this obviously. he needs to really belt “tripping” in order to make it work. no such effort. he was too deep in the mix for “vasoline” but it couldn’ hide the sub-par performance. shame he picked national TV to be lame. oh well. we’ll see what happens…

STEPH | 5/3/2008, 12:35 pm EST

JANIS SMOKED, JIM SMOKED…HE IS A SUPREME TALENT AND JUST GOT DONE SINGING A DIFFERENT GENRE WITH VELVET..HE’LL HIT HIS GROOVE…AND TO MOST OF YOU WHO ARE YOUNG..I AM HIS AGE..HE WILL EVOLVE DIFERNTLY AS HE AGES..I LIKE HE IS COMFORTABLE IN HIS SKIN!!!

weezle | 5/3/2008, 12:08 pm EST

This band kicks ass. Seen them in the nineties and I will see them on tour again. Weiland will get it together.

SH | 5/3/2008, 9:21 am EST

I agree with Stephen’s comments above.

Bands barely ever sound the same live as they do on an album. Think about it, the more you travel the more it wears you out. Also, if you’ve got problems at home or other things stressing you out, you’re not gonna be 100%

Give Weiland credit… at least he’s making the effort to reform STP and go on a massive tour. Think Soundgarden (I’m just using them as an example) would ever bother doing that these days? There are not that many 90’s groups who would bother doing such a thing and if they did, it wouldn’t be the original band members and the songs would sound different anyway.

Just be glad STP are touring again and pray that Weiland doesn’t fall into rehab again before the tour is over.

For anyone thinking he sounds flat, it must have been a bad night because he sounds awesome during their press announcement show at the Houdini Mansion on April 7

trent | 5/3/2008, 5:44 am EST

the performance of the deleo brothers was awesome (above all Dean), but Scott voice was really weak. Don’t get me wrong, i’m a huge stp fan, i think the were one of the best bands in the 90ties, but scott needs a vocal coach or maybe he had just a bad day. really looking forward to the tour start

watch stp at rolling rock performing trippin an a whole in a paper or plush on YOUTUBE and you will hear scotts amazing voice!!!

Jeff | 5/3/2008, 4:14 am EST

Stephen,

I’ve seen STP live half a dozen times and Velvet Revolver (unfortunately) a few times as well. Flat notes I can handle. I appreciate that he doesn’t resort to backing tracks.

However, his attitude sucks lately and he is a drunk mess. He is performing like he doesn’t give half a shit about the fortunate position he finds himself in after all the success he’s had and all the ’second chances at life’ he has been given. He is just standing there and is singing like he can’t wait to get offstage and have a beer. He is the weak link despite being the only one in the band that has been on more than one full tour since they split up. That’s what bothers me.

I wish dude the best of luck. He’s gonna need it to get through this tour. In the meantime, he should think about drying out again and in the meantime keeping his mouth shut/not talking so much shit about his former band when his own performance is obviously nothing to brag about.

Troy | 5/3/2008, 1:20 am EST

and p.s. stephen STP isn’t grunge music more alt rock/arena rock. They’re from California and you still can’t sound like you just took a bit of a sandwich.

Troy | 5/3/2008, 1:14 am EST

Stone Temple rocks it but I have to disappointingly agree that Scott sounded like crap. I have seen these guys 10+ times in concert and last night he sounded horrible and even forgot to start singing at one point. Hope he can pull it together.

Stephen | 5/2/2008, 8:56 pm EST

Wow, I am shocked at the amount of negative comments made about this band. People say that Weiland was performing poorly and he sang flat, blah, blah, blah. People who say obviously don’t understand the meaning of grunge music. When grunge bands perform live, their objective is not to entertain, it’s simply to just rock out. So I am sorry if you were not pleased/entertained by this but thats just the way it goes with this music and if you don’t like it, then go listen to something else.

McFearless | 5/2/2008, 4:29 pm EST

If you have never seen STP play live, do yourself a favor and hit up this tour. Right now they are just warming up. Once the tour kicks off it will blow people away. Scott Weiland is a great front man - I just hope he can hold it together!

SG | 5/2/2008, 4:21 pm EST

Weiland problem isn’t drugs. It’s cigarette smoking. Cigarettes have done a job on his vocal chords and his singing is off because of it. He should hire a singing coach to get around it, and cut down on the fags. The DeLeo Brothers have refined their stage act though, and are two rocking brothers. This is still a damn good rock n roll band.

Jenn | 5/2/2008, 3:29 pm EST

Scott is still a sex god!!!

Truth | 5/2/2008, 3:16 pm EST

Great songs, but the singing is flat. Band sounds great. Weiland is the weak link in this performance.

Truth | 5/2/2008, 3:15 pm EST

Great songs, but the singing is flat. Band sounds greast. Weiland is the weak link in this performance.

Todd | 5/2/2008, 2:29 pm EST

Why do you assume he’s drunk or half-assing it? Give the guy a break. From a performance standpoint, he was fine.

I do think he needs to hire a vocal coach in order to find his old power. I agree with you there; if he can’t bring it for 2 songs on Kimmel, what hope is there for 22 songs a night over 2 and a half.

Regardless, I’ll be at Bumbershoot over Labor Day weekend and will check them out.

Alex | 5/2/2008, 2:27 pm EST

Love it…

Swingline | 5/2/2008, 2:18 pm EST

They’re gonna need a seriously mediocre opening act for this tour just to look that much better.

Jeff | 5/2/2008, 1:23 pm EST

Weiland = arrogant drunk-ass monkey.

He can barely half-ass his way through two songs. Sings flat and just stands there like he doesn’t give a fuck. He’s gotta do two hours for 65 dates. Yeah, that’ll happen.

Jeff | 5/2/2008, 1:19 pm EST

Hey Weiland - put down the bottle. Your performance is just as pathetic as all the shit talking you’ve done lately.

Dude can barely stand up. I guess all junkies go through their alcoholic phase.

Shame - Eric and the DeLeo brothers sound terrific. Shame it’s always that arrogant prick that has to fuck it up.
