In the Studio: Queen

5/1/08, 3:16 pm EST

When Queen performed at their 2004 induction into the U.K. Music Hall of Fame, they asked former Bad Company vocalist Paul Rodgers to take on the unenviable task of filling in for the late Freddie Mercury. “It was amazing how seamlessly our different styles fit together,” Rodgers says of that appearance. “We came offstage really buzzed about it and said, ‘Let’s do some more.’ ” Within a few months, the hybrid group, dubbed Queen + Paul Rodgers, was performing a set composed mainly of Queen hits (with a handful of Free and Bad Company tunes sprinkled in) to packed arenas across the world. Rehashing the past, however, wasn’t the ultimate goal. “I don’t want us to feel just like old guys playing the hits,” Queen drummer Roger Taylor says. “Hopefully [this new album] will be a creative rebirth for us.”

Last year, Rodgers, Taylor and Queen guitarist Brian May gathered at Taylor’s estate outside London to begin recording Queen’s first album since 1995’s Made in Heaven. (Queen bassist John Deacon — who hasn’t performed with his bandmates since 1997 — opted to not come out of retirement for the project.) As the newcomer, Rodgers has had to bridge the gap between his blues-rock background and Queen’s lush, grand sound. “We’re learning a great deal from each other,” May says. “When we started talking about harmonies, Paul went, ‘Oh, really?’ ‘Cause that hasn’t been his thing. It’s a new world for him.”

The first single will likely be “C-lebrity,” which sounds like a mash-up of the brawny “All Right Now” and the harmony-soaked “Somebody to Love.” Other tracks include “We Believe,” an “epic in Queen’s traditional style,” according to May, and “Call Me,” which he says sounds like it would fit right in on Queen’s 1974 classic, Sheer Heart Attack.

The new album, The Cosmos Rocks, is the first the band has recorded without Mercury, who passed away in 1991. “I feel like he’s still very much part of the band,” May says. “We reference him every day. He always really enjoyed Paul’s work. He used to have a go at me in the studio when I tried to have him sing bluesy stuff. He’d say, ‘Brian, you’re trying to make me fucking sound like Paul Rodgers, and I can’t do it!’”

I was very impressed by this band live, but I don’t think they should call this Queen

Jungleland,

The argument over the entitlement ‘Queen’ has been stressed throughout several Queen forums. Most of us have come to the conclusion that, since both May and Taylor are the founding members, they have every right regardless of who came up with the name, which was Freddie Mercury of course. And if that doesn’t float your boat, then consider the popularity of the name. Not too many people would recognize May and Taylor under a different name, they need something that will attract attention so that arenas will be filled and so forth. It would be absolutely stupid if they buried the name and never used it again. I mean, bands like Black Sabbath, ACDC, and Genesis have had multiple frontmen and yet they still insist on using their respective entitlements, so why not Queen? And besides, it’s ‘Queen + Paul Rodgers’, not just ‘Queen’. Thanks for reading.

Queen is not Paul Rodgers! No offense to the guy. He’s a good singer but he can’t hit the notes that freddie could and to be perfectly honest when you think of Queen you think of Freddie Mercury. I wish the band would tour and record under a new name.

Can’t wait for the album!

All this moaning about whether they may call themselves “Queen” or not, is becoming rather dull after 3 years. Who cares about the name really? It’s all about the music for me, and seeing these 3 gifted musicians on one stage is a blast imo! I don’t give a f*ck how they call themselves, I only hope the new album will be pure rock at its best! :D

Zaragoza (España) con Queen. nos vemos el 25 de octubre en Madrid. “Dios salve a la Reina”.

I’m a bit worried. They say the songs would fit well with previous albums, yet they wanted to establish a new sound. Its confusing and I’m worried they will lose focus. Too many lines are blurred. It also worries me that the album has such a strong cosmic appearence because I’m worried its going to become another BM band. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but to resurrect Queen you need a lot of varying ideas smashed together into an epic masterpiece, yes? Not just two or three strains of concept. They should get Deacon to come back or add some more members to shake it up a little bit. Deacon’s got a life sure, but that doesn’t mean he can’t come in for a few studio jam sessions right? They should focus more on the music and not so much on all the publicity, but that’s just my opinion. They gotta do what they gotta do, so we might as well let them do it. They’re capable people. No worries

This, unfortunately, will fall off the charts probably two weeks after its release. It will be released as #1, then two weeks pass, not even on the charts. This won’t be because the album isn’t good: it’s because today’s music buyers have the attention span of a gnat. The best albums fall off th charts quickly because they aren’t familiar with the sound., then they’ll go back to some stupid Fergie shit. It’s amazing. Anyway, I’ll definetely buy the album. Love Queen.

Bringer | 5/4/2008, 9:46 pm EST

I am buying the new disc without even a preview. Why? because with those 3 members you are guaranteed at least some great tracks. The rest that might be weaker would still be preferable to 99% of the crap out there. Also, they represent a style and era of music that will eventually fade as the members fade away. I am fine with the name QUEEN+PAUL RODGERS, granted it’s more accurate than creative… Freddie would say “Oh just get on with it an F*** everyone else!”

Goggles | 5/5/2008, 6:51 pm EST

This album will be good even if the vocals blow, the music shall make up for it, Brian and Roger are no slackers. Every album they made (except Hot space) was so awesome

Rodrigo (chile) | 5/5/2008, 10:30 pm EST

It´s unfair think on Brian and Roger as retired. They have gerat things to offer and Paul Rodgers is a great singer. Give them a chance!

No one will ever reach Freddie, with al respect tp Paul and the rest. Queen without Freddie and without John make it half Queen, they should call the band Que or een. But I will still follow them what ever they do, as long as they have new material it’s fine but when doing old Queen stuff I’m afraid that they are galaxies behind the real Queen. Long live Queen (the real Queen)

iam a big Queen fan and i’m wondering why they (brain and roger) use the name Queen. Freddie said one: Every one of us is 25% of Queen. Guys, use your names. You are great musicians, but both of you are not Queen.

With or without Paul Rogers, I love QUEEN.
We, (brazilian´s fans, are waiting for this new album.
I wish all good luck for them (Queen + Paul Rogers)

Anonymous | 5/20/2008, 10:08 am EST

If they did’nt use the queen name you would end up with something akin to their solo albums, which tend to bomb.Using the Queen monika, has an inspirational effect on them and makes them create in the Queen style and anything that keeps Queen in the spotlight sounds good to me.

Gawd you’ve got to love Queen. John may be missing out, but it was his choice. Queen Rock!!

Joshua Hrouda | 9/26/2008, 12:37 pm EST

I **love** Queen’s music!!
I hope they make new music, true to the varying styles of Queen’s music from the 70’s through to early 90’s.
I hope it doesn’t try to compete with modern music. “NO SYNTHS” they used to boast! :)
WHY ON EARTH, didn’t they get Paul or someone into the band, back in 1991 or ‘92 ?!
Why wait so many years? Mourning? I don’t think so. Mourn, but keep making music, Queen!
Thanks for getting back together!

judyjay | 10/17/2008, 2:43 pm EST

LOVE QUEEN AND ALWAYS WILL I FIND IT DIFFICULT TO HAVE A SUBSTITUTE FREDDIE. PAUL IS DOING HIS BEST BUT HE HAS A HARD ACT TO FOLLOW.
