The Idol Countdown: Five Essential Moments From Last Night’s “American Idol”

4/30/08, 12:30 pm EST

After two weeks of brilliant guest-mentor wackiness thanks to Mariah Carey and Andrew Lloyd Webber, Neil Diamond was a relatively normalizing presence on last night’s bizarre American Idol. David Archuleta pulled the Kristy Lee Cook card and performed “America,” Ryan Seacrest creepily played with a kid in the audience’s hair before Syesha Mercado’s second song and something happened in Paula Abdul’s mind that cannot be explained by simple science. For those moments and more, check out these quick clips:

5. Due to a tear in the space-time contiuum, Paula Abdul actually did see Jason Castro perform twice (her analysis of his phantom second song was dead on, folks!).

4. Ryan Seacrest finds new and exciting ways to humiliate himself.

3. Jason Castro finds new and exciting ways to humiliate himself.

2. Brooke White recovers from a “nightmare” performance of “I’m a Believer” with a dreamy “I Am … I Said.”

1. Since Paula seems to have this future-vision thing down, our money is now officially on David Cook.

Well, David Cook is a natural born talent… but, he sounds just like that Daughtry dude… so what’s the point of having a replica??? (Of a replica… of a replica… of a…..) He should really do something special, something out of the ordinary, instead of making another modern-day boring Top40 type pop-rock record… but, it’s not gonna happen. He’s not stupid or anything, just too ordinary… too normal. I mean, he listens to Collective Soul for crying out loud. Not that they don’t have any good songs… they do. But, it’s not enough… he really needs to cut it loose and set it free. Haha. He needs to get inspired by obscurer things and edgier bands. So, all in all, I guess I’m happy for his success because at least he really is a huge talent, but I’m tired of radio being dominated by crappy, repetitve pop songs, and I see little chance of him not turning into another Kelly Clarkson, a male version of her. What a waste of talent.

Yeah you’re right, David Cook does sound like the same boring old crap usually blaring at the stadium these days. The only reason the judges like him is they see a cookie-cutter grunge-clone who takes himself too seriously in a corny way à la whoever-that-bald-guy-was-(Chr is something?)-who-lost-to-Taylor -Hicks who would be easiest to market. I’m hoping for Syesha, Archuleta or Jason.

Itdoesntreallymatter | 5/2/2008, 9:02 pm EST

These players are all just run of the mill singers. Each have their own style and each have talent. However, It is no longer about talent or who has the pipes….It is a popularity contest!!! No more than 1 vote per singer per phone number would totally change the outcome and possibly even find a true American Idol…….Get real….rubin studder,, taylor hicks What a joke!! Anony-mouse has it right….cook is a stadium player and jason and brooke I would go watch in a small pub/bar/club and David A. cant remember the words to songs he has been trying to sing most of his life…I wouldnt waste time listening to him.If you have a problem sleeping by all means listento David A…..PROBLEM SOLVED

loretta | 5/1/2008, 8:57 pm EST

As an avid AI fan from the beginning, I feel that this years contestants are the most mediocre of all!!! However let’s give a big shout out to the band, orchestra, and background singers. They are the best ever and work very hard to make every ‘Idol’ stand out! But, if next year is like this one AI can count me out…..Dancing with the Stars, here I come!!!

Bukowski | 5/1/2008, 9:04 am EST

JFK “Ask not what your country can do for . . .”

Paula Abdul “This is hard”

Thanks God for putting me on this earth to live during the 21 Century. No, THIS is hard!

Spanish | 5/1/2008, 8:44 am EST

David Cook is in another league. Making derogatory remarks about him shows your age. He has the whole package and what is more will sell records. That is what it is all about. He takes an ordinary little song and makes it current and gorgeous. He has the most remarkable voice and presence. If he does not win - there is something wrong with the public.

David A is a sweet kid with a nice voice but he will not sell records. He does not have grit.

matt | 5/1/2008, 2:55 am EST

Well I guess due to the Paula thingy we all know now that the judges comments are pre-scripted to some degree. Anyway I like Jason best, it’s refreshing to hear an AI contestant that doesn’t scream their songs in order for me to enjoy them. David Cook is very corny and boring

ArchuLOVEYA | 4/30/2008, 10:42 pm EST

David Archuleta hands down has the most talent. Cook sounds like everyone else and that makes sense cuz he is doing covers of covers BY EVERY ONE ELSE! Sorry Cookie lovers….David Archuleta has more talent in his little finger than Cook. They will BOTH sell albums but mark my words, Archuleta will be a legend.

Carollyn Peterson | 4/30/2008, 10:40 pm EST

David Cook is HOT, talented,….. and DID I SAY HOT….These remarks come from a Grandma!

Bukowski | 4/30/2008, 9:18 pm EST

Paula has the easiest job in the world and she still fucks it up.

The worst part is she pulls down 8 figures a year (10s of millions) for doing it!

Lauren | 4/30/2008, 6:39 pm EST

Jason Castro has become Sanjaya! It is time for him to go home.

Kathy | 4/30/2008, 6:14 pm EST

I understand that some people might not like, or even know, Neil Diamond music. But hey, I don’t really like Mariah Carey’s music, and I kept an open mind on her night! FYI, I thought she did an excellent job of mentoring, and ended up enjoying that night very much. Most of the 5 could have done better with ND’s music if they had picked songs more suited to their style. My two favorites were David C and Syesha. Hope Syesha stays around a little longer.

Over 40 | 4/30/2008, 6:10 pm EST

OK, OK,…. so I’m over 40. I can’t understand why AI is touting this show for a younger generation; even I think the guest artists are irrelevant for today, and I even own much of their music! It’s true that there is diversity among the 5, and each of them could do well when produced correctly and marketed right. It’s true that there seems to be an element of boredom all the way around. The energy and excitement of the earlier weeks is quickly going. The cliches of each of the judges is now turning this show into a parody of itself. We’ll see it in mockery for years to come. The AI star that shone so brightly is about to implode on itself. How many of your family and friends really vote for 2 hours on speed dial, anyway. That alone tells you the voting system is ridiculous. It will be interesting to see these last chapters of this “entertainment.”

kathy shore | 4/30/2008, 5:17 pm EST

i like David Cook to win the whole
thing - David A shounds the same
every week boring.
simon you have got to get a better
person other that paula to judge
next year please………….

David Cook is my Boyfriend | 4/30/2008, 5:16 pm EST

Wow, I happened to love last night’s show because of Paula. Her trying to cover by bad mouthing David Cook when seconds later she praises him as her favorite and later sees into the future that he wins. I knew I loved her for a reason. All I can tell you is that David Cook is slowly taking over the female population of earth, week after smouldering week. The heat of one thousand red hot suns! I am ready to pour some sugar on him for about 17 hours. He’s my winner.

t | 4/30/2008, 5:11 pm EST

it’s not all Paula’s fault. listening to Neil Diamond would put anyone into a coma.

Mary Ann Larson | 4/30/2008, 5:06 pm EST

BORING!!!!!!!
Songs were rushed. Contestants mediocre. Paula was a joke. Is she reading stuff they give her before the show to say? WIERD!!!!!!!!
The American Idol, as entertainment, used to be ” The Bomb” but is turning into a dull format with dull performances. Even the performers are yawning in the wings ( Jason Castro).
Quick somebody! Give this show a jolt.

Elvis knows best... | 4/30/2008, 4:22 pm EST

Syesha was best. Jason is a joke… wash it cut it or comb it dude! Boring voice. Brooke was boring as well. Archuleta needs to clear his throat… always sounds like he has a great big gob of lunger stuck in his throat… surprised it doesn’t gurgle, Cook sounds the same on every “original” remake he performs.

Not Paula | 4/30/2008, 3:57 pm EST

On talent, Cook should win. He’s in another league from everyone else. Since I’m not Paula I can’t see into the future but the past tells me Cook could easily lose. Does the name Daughtry ring a bell? All I can say is that if Cook loses and Archuleta wins I’ll never watch Idol again. That much I can predict with 100% accuracy.

Joe | 4/30/2008, 3:44 pm EST

Syesha out performed the others in combined songs performances. Jason, another Elmer Fudd inpersonation, Brooke- not so good again, Archuleta- boring, same moves- same runs, Cook- average, but another consistent outing, he’s the favorite, maybe not the popular vote getter.

everywhere | 4/30/2008, 3:34 pm EST

I agree with anonymous.David Cook looks untidy all the time. His talent is good for recording and to the poeple that like his style, but most poeple like to listen to a real song that is sang by someone that has a really amazing voice like David Archuleta.David A everytime he sings it touches your heart just like he did to Dolly P,It give you goosebumps! check out when he sang “Heaven”

Anony-mouse | 4/30/2008, 3:32 pm EST

I think all the contestants are getting tired, and want to go home. At this point, they’ve all got great exposure, have their fan bases, and will sell their music. It probably means little to their careers whether or not they’re the #1 AI winner. Their future successes will be more determined by their versatility and crossover appeal. For me, looking at these contestants, I’d go to a small-venue concert to see Brooke or Jason, a stadium concert to see Cook, and I’d never consider going to an Archuleta concert not because he’s not an amazing singer, but because all his songs sound alike. What would be the point?

Bukowski | 4/30/2008, 3:30 pm EST

that last paragraph is a fucking mess. sorry.

Bukowski | 4/30/2008, 3:28 pm EST

“The Jazz Singer” has been playing on cable the last week or two. The movie is fucking horredous. Neil Diamond plays this up and coming recording artist who loses it when he dad shows back up in his life.

He walks out of the recording studio and starts hitchiking. And the movie has this cheesy montage of Neil “Finding” himself. He hitch hikes from place to place to place, grows a beard, gets a job in a bar in a little nowhere town.

The worse part is repeatedly constantly show him in this diner window showing him until he has grown a beard. This is the cinematic magic of this film that shows the passage of time.

Real corny stuff.

Shirley | 4/30/2008, 3:21 pm EST

The problem this season is that no one is memorable. David A. has a great voice, but he makes everything he sings sound like the song he sang the week before. He reminds me of Muzak. The other David only sounded like he could sing on Andrew Lloyd Webber night. Every other time he just hollered and screamed like a rock wanna be. Syesha resembles too many other singers. Brook is boring and Castro is a joke.

I do not plan to watch this show ever again.

Rick | 4/30/2008, 3:13 pm EST

David Archuleta has the best voice and is the most talented, IMO. If he has an amazing performance in the next couple of weeks, he will win. If not, then Cook will win. Cook really is nothing special, but he will continue to have the momentum to win unless Archuleta stops it (and is the only one that can).

me | 4/30/2008, 3:04 pm EST

ARCHULETA is the best!

Anonymous | 4/30/2008, 3:02 pm EST

David Archuleta has the best voice.
David Cook either talks or screams his songs. His looks are dirty and discheveled. He needs to go!
Why Paula thinks he is “The American Idol” makes as much sense as her thinking Jason sang twice.
This year needs to get over fast!!

joan | 4/30/2008, 3:00 pm EST

David Cook all the way. he is talented and a great performer. he will go far. they are all talented ,but my pick is still david cook

pam johnson | 4/30/2008, 2:25 pm EST

Jason is the one, I think the young David will win. Jason is different and Idol needs to have someone like him win.

Archie is so sweet | 4/30/2008, 2:22 pm EST

Archie stole the show last night
he got the most applauses, screams, and love from the audience..He is the most talented with only 17
sorry Cook fans but Archie is tha champ!

Cookin' | 4/30/2008, 1:59 pm EST

Always enjoy your “Essential Moments” As for Mr. Cook well, my money’s been there all along. When you’ve got it, you’ve got it and that young man has “IT”.

Julie A. | 4/30/2008, 1:51 pm EST

Archuleta,Cook, and Mercado gave awesome performances. I was really shocked to hear Simon say that Syesha may be in trouble. Of course I understand that the type of music she sings doesn’t always appeal to audiences. That being said Jason Castro and Brooke White were the weakest performers last night. Of course with their fan bases that may not matter.

tcbpat | 4/30/2008, 1:10 pm EST

I hope Paula can see into the future..David Cook “ROCKS” if this years show is really for the talent and not just popularity then he should win. He is the best one left. He makes the songs his..
Good Luck David….

Anonymous | 4/30/2008, 12:54 pm EST

Paula sure did put one big high heeled foot in her mouth. The rushed format really wrecked all the songs and the singers’ ability to do a good job. Way to make them all look bad, Idol. Anyway, liked Cook and Syesha and loved to see Archuleta having fun and growing.
