4/30/08, 2:40 pm EST

  • Albert Hofmann, the chemist who discovered LSD, died of a heart attack yesterday in his native Switzerland. He was 102. While researching a fungus, Hofmman synthesized the compound into lysergic acid diethylamide, which eventually helped influence every piece of music written in 1967.
  • Record labels Too Pure and Beggars Banquet will close and fold into the 4AD label as part of restructuring. Artists contracted under the two labels, including Mark Lanegan, The National and John Cale, will now be released under 4AD.
  • Country’s Glen Campbell will cover the Foo Fighters, Tom Petty and U2 on his new, genre-busting album Meet Glen Campbell.
  • Perez Hilton will join the staff of NY rap station Hot 97’s morning crew to provide daily minute-long gossip updates. Hilton’s tenure begins May 5th.

Campbell’s always been great, and I’d like to hear what he’s got planned. A song like Everlong or Best of You would be great.

I understand Albert Hofmann really thought LSD could be used to treat serious issues. While I know it was used to a degree for such purposes, I have to wonder how far he felt it could have gone to help humanity.

RIP Albert Hofmann.

Glen Campbell has always sung songs written by someone else.

There was a time in pop music where it was the exception not the rule that artists wrote their own material, Glen comes from that tradition of recording artists.

Your criticism of a man who is a legendary artist is unfair.

Glen Campbell is doing what artists do when they can’t do it themselves, like Santana.

R.I.P. Albert Hofmann.

Glen Campbell can if Paul Anka did. I hope he sounds a lot better on this project than a “live” gig he recently did on a TV show. Always loved his Jimmy Webb covers…he is one of great vocalists!
